GRAFTING FRUIT TREES with Chip-Budding Technique (recommended season - SPRING)
Detailed visual information about this easy to execute grafting technique is provided in this video. Graft a wide variety of fruit trees with dormant or freshly cut buds increasing the number of grafts that can be done with just a few scions.

Thanks for the video. Will this work with Apple trees?

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  2 роки тому +6

Yes, it does work with apple trees. Just wait until the rootstock is awake, with the sap flowing for better results. Keep the scions in the fridge wrapped in kitchen film until they are needed.

@@JSacadura .... sir, Namaste from India 🙏 .. I am an avid follower of your videos since long. An engineer by education, I just love the way you put forth such deep technical details in such a simple and lucid manner ... these are the traits of a great teacher ... my respect.
Always wanted to ask you a question regarding Grafting on Rose plants but refrained as you usually deal with fruit trees. Can this technique of chip grafting can be employed on Rose plants? Normally T- graft or wedge grafting is used for roses ... I've used them too . I want your opinion on the best grafting methods for roses including chip grafting using old dormant buds from the older part of the stem. May be couple of videos dedicated to rose!😊Please guide... much love from India.. Regards 🙏

I have watched so many videos on grafting and can honestly say yours are the most informative and best. This video, in particular, is one that I watched a few times to master my bud grafting technique. The close-ups are what make it so informative. I have six varieties of young asian pear trees that need pruning but want to cut scions off for grafting. It would be a waste to discard the pruned branches. I will be bud grafting them to other pear trees. Thanks again for a great video.

You're welcome! When I watched some videos on grafting I was always surprised by the lack of detail. On my videos I always try to improve and show the process as I see it with as much detail as possible (without boring the viewer). Its not so easy to film it and do it at the same time, though, and its very time consuming. Thanks for the comment.

suggestion on a future topic. Love to see just a general tour video. Are you a hobby orchard-ist, for a company, how big the orchard is, specifics on what and how you grow things. Your irrigation setup. No need to get super personal but i think the larger context would be very interesting to watch and understand

Hi. Thanks for the comment and the suggestion. I plan to do a tour in the future when the place is a bit "cleaner" and to my liking (not enough time to do it all, for now). In the About section of my channel I mention that my piece of land has roughly 5 acres (fruit trees cover less than half of it) - ua-cam.com/users/JSacaduraabout. My orchard, at the moment, is mainly for family consumption, so you can call me an hobby orchard-ist.😊

If you are grafting onto an older tree (and don’t want to cut it back to the stump), how do you decide which branches to start from to ensure the graft takes and doesn’t get outcompeted by rootstock wood?

After a few hundreds grafts it becomes second nature. As most things practice is everything. Developing muscle memory is key for the easy flow of most of these techniques. But this one is rather easy to learn. You just need a sharp knife and a good control (when cutting the chip towards you) to avoid injuries when learning.

I am actually trying the same thing..last year i had a plum tree with purple leaves that i grafted using cleft technique on secondary branches... I managed to get success with nectarine, golden plum and apricot. The bark grafts i made at the main trunk though all failed not sure why..
I was trying to graft with also peach and sour cherry....
From what i was told a plum rootstock os compatible with any prunoid tree: cherry, peach, nectarine, apricot and even almonds.
You can use quince as rootstock to make a tutti frutti tree of pomoids as it is compatible with Apple, pear and even loquat....

It seems there is more than meets the eye about this chip budding technique... Last year I tried a few between mid march and mid april on different trees: almonds, plums, apples and avocados... I guess avocado was an Hail Mary but someone told me that he heard that it works in avocados.
I made sure that at least in one side of the chip there was a cambium contact when the chip was not the exact same size as the cut in the rootstock. Or at least I was convinced I did that... :-D
Not a single one worked... And I have no clue why, since when I cut the chip I put it back in the original branch to avoid dehydration while I was cutting the root stock as fast as I could.
I used plastic film, not parafilm as that thing seems to me is hard to get. I was told it is used in labs so it is not something you just go to a drug or farming store and buy. Not sure if this can be the issue, but if plastic film works for T-budding, should work here I guess.
I think I will stick to bark grafting although I have to wait more years for the rootstock to grow.

Chip-budding directly to a larger diameter trunk of an adult tree doesn't work very well. Its best to head back the tree in steps and, usually, a few dormant buds will start growing at a lower position.

I have to say your videos are amazing and highlight a lot of details that are not obvious when we try to learn from a book. Does this chip budding technique work with almond trees?... I have been trying to graft an almond tree using cleft technique and this year it was a disaster... Not sure if it was because the weather was too dry this winter. I grafted in early January as I was told we have to graft fruit trees using cleft technique before the rootstock leaves dormancy. Like if there is already sap when you cut the rootstock it is too late to graft, except for vines... Is this even true? I have seen videos from you where it seems you graft using cleft when there are sprouts already... Last year i also grafted the same almond tree with peach and only 1 was successful. But last year i think the grafts where too thin.. this year i grafted on 1 year branches and i noticed that the rootstock branches were still green instead of red/brown... Could this explain the failure as well? I was told the best for almond trees is flute technique (canudo/flauta) but i have no idea on when to do it as the bark from both scion and rootstock must peel away perfectly...

      >>Like if there is already sap when you cut the rootstock it is too late to graft, except for vines... Is this even true?
Not in my experience. I even prefer to graft with dormant scions on rootstocks that have just left dormancy (or even later, with budding techniques).
Cleft grafts can be tricky (I much prefer the modified cleft graft). Cleft grafts are "advertised" as easy, but they are prone to failure, since trying to perfectly match the cambiums in this type of graft is quite difficult for less experienced grafters. That's why I always recommend crossing the cambium at some point. That never fails to make cambium contact. Flute technique is done in late spring/early summer as the bark has to be slipping real well. Check my latest video on several techniques that will work for almond trees. Here's a video of grafting an older almond tree with a new variety - ua-cam.com/video/atOdPM6FmL0/v-deo.html (turn the sound down - its an older video with annoying background music). Here's an update of the same bark graft (only one graft was allowed to grow - ua-cam.com/video/XjTSi-6l2hQ/v-deo.html)

@@JSacadura OK... Thanks for confirming what I already suspected...
I think I am grafting things too early in the year... It seems I asked for advice to the wrong people... :-D
I am based close to Porto where the climate is way more humid than your area (Alto Douro?) … I guess that makes a difference on best times to graft, no?
But this almond tree is giving me a hard time... For years it bloomed and on May of each year all the fruits just fell to the ground for no reason....
Maybe lack of pollination from other trees? I think if that was the case there would only be flowers and no small fruits, right?
Thanks for that video on the almond tree.
I should have known earlier that I can cut the bark on the bark technique... In the first year I grafted it on 5 lateral branches and I used really thin peach scions, a small screwdriver and small rubber hammer to hammer them in between the bark and the wood...and then covered some with dirt and others with sand inside a plastic/cardboard container... Of course that does not protect well against the water just the sun....
Anyway I became a fan of the wedge technique on the next year, as it seems to work well on 5+ years old trees.
Even a newbie like me can get satisfactory results with it...
For some reason when I tried to graft the almond with apricot all failed... But last year I grafted a pissardi plum successfully with apricot using cleft...

My brand new grafting knife is dull compared to yours, lol. I better sharpen it

Hi, Amy. Some brands don't sell their knifes sharp enough to do a good and safer job. Sharpening might not be so easy, in the beginning, but it's well worth it.

I used a nylon bag made of plastic
Its shown in one of my videos
Should I cut it after 2 weeks or leave it and the bud will penetrate?
    Many thanks for the video

Sap flow killed most of my grafts this year, ill have to re purchase the varieties.

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  2 роки тому

Depending on the fruit type excessive sap flow will prevent most grafts from healing. That's why its important to take steps to release some of the sap, or graft earlier or in the fall (moments when the sap flow is not that high).

Hi. It's one of my favorites. I sometimes only have one scion of a variety I want to graft (sent by a friend) and with this technique I can do almost as many grafts as the number of buds in the scion. Thanks for the comment.
