    I’m trying to be of the mindset that things that are consumable aren’t meant to be collectible.

    • @robnessvic
      @robnessvic 3 місяці тому +21

      Exactly! I collect a few things but I keep them and they’re like decorative items basically. “Collecting” consumables means you use them up more quickly and throw all that plastic in the bin on a regular basis

      This is great and I agree. I learned this after working at LUSH in 2016 and getting a little too obsessed with their collections, which ended up only lasting a few weeks at a time. It was fun for a while, but simply unsustainable. You don't need a hundred products in your bathroom at once. You won't even be able to appreciate them. It's just too excessive.

    This should also be counted as addiction, addiction isn't only about drugs, it can be anything, and it gets worse if she's getting payed for it. This is promoting addiction, making it seems that is okay to do this, it isn't people don't realize this

    ...and I'm over here trying to figure out how to declutter my shower that I share with my husband and 2 small kiddos (okay, just to clarify and not be creepy, we share at different times). When I'm trying to relax in my shower routine, all the bottles, free floating toys, and random items make me feel stressed...like the stuff is subconsciously telling me to stop screwing around and clean the place. This influencer's shower set up would be so bad for my mental health.

    Can we talk about how a lot of these overconsumption TikTok accounts are substituting buying things for a talent. A lot of them aren’t necessarily entertaining, innovative, or interesting. They’re just buying a bunch of things over and over.

      Yes, I would expand that to say they're also substituting it for a hobby or skill (which can always be cultivated and shared). I also think that many of the people who spend a lot of time watching shopping content and are easily influenced to buy things may be doing so because they lack anything more interesting, engaging, and rewarding in their lives. My advice would be to look for something better to focus your energy on.

I wonder if consumption over hobbies and interests is going to get worse or better 🤨

    As someone with OCD who has struggled with excessive showering, content like this is genuinely haunting. I used to unwillingly spend 2-3 hours in the shower everyday, this damaged my body and senses so bad! I could never believe that someone would genuinely want to do this. Posting this type of content and other content like the "clean girl" stuff is so harmful to people because it gives the believe that we need to be doing more in the shower and to be doing more to be clean. Why would you treat your body skin that way and have the nerve to call it pampering? I think the danger is younger people will see this and think that is what it takes to feel "clean and soft".

    This is probably one of your best videos so far because everything you mentioned HAD to be said and addressed. To be transparent, I was watching a ton of these self care product videos to the point where I was ADDICTED to both watching them and spending my money on the products they use to have the same kind of collection that the creator had. I fell for the marketing all the time by how they make the products look in the videos (not even making the connection of comparing it to an actual advertisement) now here I am, 3 years later with this HUGE COLLECTION of shower products from when when I went on that spending phase and I'm still trying to use them up. If there's a product you wanna try - fair. But you don't have to OVERCONSUME AND BUY 10-20 AT ONCE BECAUSE IT WILL JUST OVERWHELM YOU. These strangers aren't there in your bathroom with you every day while you use these products - they don't care what kind of products that you use! They just want to buy because these creators are making them look good in the "advertisements"!

They get sent free PR and push products on their platforms to incentivize you to buy it exactly the way a sales team would do it. @@DarkerDominionshere it’s absolutely not ritualistic behavior. Ritualistic behavior would look like the person here having a specific way of showering, like wash left arm 2 times first beginning with pinky finger, then right arm 2 times in the same way, counting or repetition thinking, etc… there’s a lot of way of having ocd as ritualistic behavior while showering. OCD is debilitating and overwhelming, and source of suffering for the person. Having a fixation on a scrub selling brand or feeling like you need all of them is, in itself, not what OCD is.
      Sure, OCD can be considered as a spectrum, but we are talking more of a “quite manageable but still” to “can leave house or do anything”, and different types of OCD involved (contamination, thoughts, obsessions, rituals, etc..).

But in reality, the money spent on brand name items is opportunity cost for something else. What I'm saying is while she may have spent $1k on her shower, I don't get the feeling she is "wealthy" in a traditional sense. More likely, she is spending in this way to make up for lack in another area and is likely not as "wealthy" as she wants us to believe. That's just my unlicensed, unsolicited opinion on the matter.

When it comes to makeup and its accessories, I buy absolutely nothing, except for the occasional chapstick. Skincare, I buy a bottle of shampoo and bodywash. Plus, an extra one as a backup once the first one runs out, depending on the price and size. I also have a bottle of body lotion. It has lasted me for months now, and when that runs out, I will naturally buy a new one. But not until then. And that’s it, that’s all I have and need to have. Nothing more.

    Waste aside, shes DESTROYING her skins natural moisture barrier, and that really should concern her more. Even though she uses moisturizing products, all of the constant abrasion can lead to bacterial infections and rashes. Ugh

      Sugar scrubs aren't *that* abrasive, half the sugar dissolves as soon as it gets wet. Sugar itself is a humectant, it's fine.

    No one needs that many of anything. I like treehut. But I buy one scent at a time. Then when I empty it, I can try a new one 🤦🏼‍♀️ this overconsumption wastes soooo much product. These items will expire before they use them all. Also, putting old products in new products seems very unsanitary

    I know stepping foot into her house would be an instant migraine😅 I can never get how people can have so many different varieties or brands of the same product. Like once you find the one that works best for you you don’t stick to it? I’m currently on the hunt for a new shampoo and I’m trying a bunch of different ones but I can’t imagine buying one of every single shampoo I’ve tried and using all of them

    Maybe we should come at this from a different angle…they are getting crazier each month 😳😂
    I think ppl watch those videos without knowing how to benefit and customize it for them. Perhaps, adding a section on how to partake responsibly in what they see 🤷🏾‍♀️
    I watch to get ideas, scale it down and customize it for me. I don’t like clutter soooo, it’s easy for me to say “nope” 😂😂

    The consumerism of TikTok people is exactly like the massive consumerism of early boomers.

    Legitimate question: why would you ever need shower gel and bar soap in the same shower?

    • @raylayaaaa
      @raylayaaaa 3 місяці тому

      Because scented soaps don’t really focus on cleaning properties they focus more on the scent. So you use the unscented soap first and then apply the scented soap… which still doesn’t make sense especially if you’re going to use scented lotion/perfume afterwards

      They’re the same chemical make up just in different forms, so you really only need one or the other

    What I’d like to know is… 🤫 “WHAT” IS SHE DOING TO HAVE TO TAKE THIS MANY SHOWERS/BATHS???? 🤔 And HOW DRY is her skin for taking that many showers? Where are the 20,000 lotions & oils that are gonna be needed to make it “pliable” again?? She doesn’t show that? So many questions? 😂

      she literally shows a whole closet of lotions and body butters

    unless it's a business spa location, there is no reason why people need that much supplies for showers. you'd need maybe 4 showers a day to not waste that. or maybe a large amount people living in the house & guests. it's definitely over consumption , but her money. she is advertising ; i don't think she would own collections if not able to advertise it. at least, she's clean ?!? it's not illegal. mixed feelings about this

    These shower collections would be fine if this was some sort of group home setting where a multitude of people are using this area and a multitude of people are using it.

    she likely makes A LOT of money from her videos, so it just feeds the cycle and encourages her to buy more so she can keep making content

    The tok os irresponsible for allowing videos of her decorating her shower with lights to remain posted. That’s a safety hazard and people will replicate that and have a potential to get hurt.
    Also the internet popularized so many things that were just ordinary. I was using tree hut back in the early 2000s and it was just a product. So I was very confused when they amassed a cult following. Similar to the Stanley cup situation. Those were in production long before the tok found them and made them popular

    What? Did she restock the scrub over the old one? That's potentially dangerous for the skin cause the old scrub is expiring and she's putting the new one on top of the old expiring one! It's more logical to finish up your jars and then replace them with the new ones... Btw this makes me feel so sad especially considering this is not going to improve your life as Social Symone says, neither their skin and personally I also noticed recently all the products are the same! I can't see the huge difference when I use a drugstore product or a luxury brand, Idk why honestly but this is something I've been noticing lately, everything performs the same at the end of the day and you look the same... So owning all those shower products is a waste, I guarantee all those products she has in the shower give the same exact result, the only difference is the scent! But obviously she's making money so she will keep pushing overconsumption...
