As a former husky owner, I can confirm they are escape artists. Some of them can jump at least 6 feet. One thing that some husky owners have on their fences sometimes is what is known as a "roll bar." It's basically a bar or cable of some sort with a loose fitting pipe around it, mounted to the top of the fence. If the dog tries to jump, the pipe rolls freely when their paws make contact with the top of the fence, denying them a foothold.
The fence between our property and our side neighbour is a 6 foot privacy fence, but when the neighbour got a new collie puppy our Doberman and the Collie were determined to get together to play. Our dog was left in the yard unattended for about a half hour so she just dug a three foot deep hole right under the fence. I looked out the kitchen window and the two dogs were running and playing in the neighbour's yard. "T-bar" posts driven into the ground along the fence prevented further digging. I have a chain-link four foot fence at the front driveway side of the back yard. One day while talking with a neighbour, who had their dog with them, on the street in front of my driveway I caught my Doberman's escape from the back yard out of the corner of my eye. A quick 10 foot run and she leaped and cleared the four foot fence effortlessly and bounded down the driveway to meet the neighbour's dog. Just to prove "If there is a will....there is a way".
You are a really great Doberman specialist! I thank you my friend. There is no better breed on the planet! Love u. I have had 2 female Dobermans. Both an American & European Dobie. My Euro, Mazzy, was a big time escape artist. I feel for any owners out there that have one of these doggies. They are so smart that I don't think there is a real solution besides maturation. Mazzy would actually jump out of a 2nd story window to chase a bike rider. My friends her "wild dog!" She could easily clear a 6 ft fence. In hindsight, she needed more work from me.
Great tips. Another Doberman trait is long fingers. They can open gates😎 I live in Coyote country so I have my fence electrified. My Doberman touched it once and now stays two feet off the fence. It’s only 4 jewels , but it will get your attention. I touched it in bear feet first so I know. It’s made for goats. Truthfully you touched on it, they prefer being inside. Don’t worry they knock on the door when they’ve had enough 😂 Glad you shared this topic. It’s sad when you lose a dog due to poor planning.
Doberman Planet the real laugh was this was back in the 70s when the fear of Dobies was at its highest Gorace jumped the fence and ran down driveway and came running straight back at me I’m freaking out and he comes and plants a kiss on my face as he ran by
Thanks for all of your videos! I've always loved dobermans but I've never been able to own one, my mom is finally getting me one for my birthday:) I've done LOTS of research on dobermans over the years and I'm ready for the responsiblity and time I need to put into this dog. Thank you for helping me understand more about them!! My dobie puppy will be here in 2 weeks and I'm so excited:))
Good to see you making videos . Hope your doing well.. my Doberman is very territorial but he always stays in sight of me .. I can’t get even get 5 min alone lol. So he never tries escape .. well unless he sees a squirrel!
Thank you! Yeah, the family is doing better. Yeah, it's pretty funny, I was convinced I could just leave the gate to the backyard open and still not have to worry about Cooper escaping. Just no desire too! It was great! Love these dogs.
We are VERY luck. Our dobie is ridiculously respectful of fences. We reseeded part of our lawn and fenced the perimeter with star pickets and two rows of orange twine a foot and a half off the ground....he never ever set a paw over that twine 😱🥳🤩. I think he’s a dobie unicorn 🤪😂🤣
Haha, mines the same way! He got out once... he was waiting on our front porch when we got home. Haha. Great dogs. Sounds like you have one of the good ones too!
I don't have a doberman . I have a med / small black mutt who must have some olympic ancestors.I think she has wings. She dug .. I fixed it. She climbed .. I fixed it. Now she flies. I can't afford the tall wood fence so I'm out here looking for ideas . You had lots of good advice and it gave me ideas I can apply to this situation so I just wanted to thank you. I do think dobermans are so beautiful, majestic even. Why isn't he in the video here getting followers? Lol wish I could have seen him🌞
i like videos , where there is more puppy and less no puppy , i'm joking , love your videos and i watch them with great interest , my best friend got a doberman puppy last mounth and he is soo cute , that's why i like watching your videos , they are very helpful !
I am so excited that you are on youtube because I am getting a Doberman soon and you have given me so much information thank you. Also, do you think that a Shih Tzu and a Doberman can be best buddies?
Regarding a dog climbing a chain link fence.... My sister had Boxers that could climb fences. Also. I use to volunteer at the Humane Society as a dog walker. ALL Huskies were kept in a covered kennel. They also are climbers. Anyway, just thought I would share that information. We have a chain link fence around our front and back yard. We are on #5 dog since 1994. Both of our female rescue Dobes COULD have easily jumped the fence....BUT All of our dogs have been trained to "stay in the yard ". Gate can be wide open, our dogs dont even notice. Lol! Our Penny Lane (our current dog, a floppy eared red Doberman rescue...now 3 years old) is by far... THEE EASIEST dog we have ever trained!!! She was a 48 pound stray from Oklahoma city, she is a MINNESOTA Dog now. Happy, healthy, trained, silly, loving, brave, affectionate....ETC, ETC...
I've got a Redtick Coonhound who likes to jump our 5 ft. chainlink from sitting within an inch or so of it. She only touches the very top weightbearing pole as she passes over it. Very frustrating. Will be taking some ideas from this, and will also be checking into getting some rolls of chainlink that I can cut in half horizontally and attach to the top of the existing fence to make it taller.
Lol I own a Doberman in a 4 or 3 1/2 foot fence it’s super short but I always supervise him when he’s out there and he’s never shown any interest in leaving thankfully lol
Oddly my Doberman is the dog with the least desire to get out of the fence i have ever had. i was worried it would be a problem with his athleticism and high energy, so the first thing i did after getting him was getting him a microchip. As for them loving to be inside i can 2nd that my dog is SO happy after learning to use the dog door.
It’s crazy because our gargantuan 6 month old Dobie can open every door in the house (to get to us, of course 😂), but so far has shown zero interest in getting away, or leaving his boundaries/fence.... he’s still young, but so far so good.
VELCRO DOGS!!! Dobes always want to be with their people!! Gawd I Love this breed!! I'm currently snuggling with our current rescue Doberman Penny Lane. I cant gush about how wonderful she is enough! Our last rescue Doberman The Grimace was a TOTAL space invader, she was HILARIOUS! She would lay on top of her brother (Rhodesian ridgeback/lab mix). Buster was such a good sport! We had Buster for 4 years before we adopted The Grimace. They were both 6 years old then. They both lived until 14 years old. Cripes! Now I'm getting teary eyed...
how is the puppy hunting going? My breeder is having a litter come spring... so that's my game plan. Great video on containing the powerful intelligent Doberman!! My boy Darko was too much of a Velcro Dog to ever want to escape. He rarely wanted to go outside (besides going to the washroom) unless I was with him. He was my shadow!
My first dog, when I was three, on the Philippine Island of Manila, could climb a 10-foot hurricane fence with inward facing rows of barbed wire above, to jump into our next door neighbor's yard which was 5 feet above ours...escape there, and then run to town when she was in heat, to get a little loving and roll in tar pits and come back home to give us puppies later on....
I'm getting a Euro dobie in June or so and I have no fence. On 5 acres and plenty of deer and squirrel in my yard on a daily basis. Very concerned about this because ideally I want to let him run a little bit free but that cannot be done until he's trained.
They also sell pulley runner line tie-outs for real escape artists, a family member has one for their german shepherd who could jump their 7-foot fence.
I have a smaller dog (blue heeler mixed with a cocker spaniel) and he can scale a wall. What he does is run along the wall like a rat and eventually ends up on the other side. My other dog (red-nosed pit) walks along the wall like a cat. It's a good thing my neighbors love them and don't seem to mind much. It's slow-going, but it's getting better.
Thanks for the heads up on the Home Depot things for the chain link, but All my house perimeter has about a 4 foot chain link fence. Is there any tips into teaching him how not to jump over?
1:39. "Air" Dobermann must be very proud...(ba-domp-bomp) *Heir Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, for those who may not know the Breed Creator's name and/or don't get the punny joke I just made (insert rimshot here)
Hi, there! We are considering fostering a Doberman, but we do not have a fence around our yard and can't build one just yet. If one faithfully exercises the dog outside each day, is this sufficient, or will one be doing the dog a disservice by not having a fenced-in area? I know you have said that a Doberman can live even in an apartment, but just want to make sure we are setting ourselves (and the dog) up for success. Thank you!
I live on a 20 acre farm that is fenced in. We are getting a Doberman puppy in 2 weeks. Our fence is only 4.5 feet and I’m hoping that works because we are not re fencing 20 acres. 😆 he also will have 4 other doggie friends
My guess is you'll be in pretty good shape. It's when they're alone and bored that it can become a major problem. With that much room and distractions I wouldn't be too worried. Make sure he has a collar and is micro chipped just in case. Also make sure there's nothing near the fence he can jump up on top of and get over. But I wouldn't be too worried in your situation. Just keep an eye on his behavior.
Doberman Planet wow! Thank you so much for the quick response! I am recommending your channel to everyone since you are doing an awesome job with it! I have always wanted a Doberman and now with this turn of events and needing to stay on the property I figure it’s the best time to get a pup! Thank you for all that you do to educate us!
They typically aren’t the type of dogs who want to leave you, or their boundaries.... they like the confinement of their own space, and family........ they can be wild cards sometimes, but usually they want to be with you.
hiya..I was wondering if anyone has had experience with springerman … my Summer is one …mum is the springer spaniel and dad is a doberman .. she is now 13 months old and in size somewhere between both dog breeds …so far she hasn’t tried to jump our 4 foot fence … although she stands up with her paws resting on the fence and watches passers by
I have a pitbull and he can clear all your walls without running. He just sits in front of a wall, aims and boom he's over.So i had to train him not to do it.Luckily for me got the picture very quickly.
I HAD A WOODEN SIX FOOT FENCE SURROUNDING THE YARD, BUT THE KENNEL HAD A CHAIN LINK FENCE. SIX FOOT ALSO...... THEY DIDN'T JUMP OVER THE FENCE, BUT WOULD MOVE THE LATCH ON THE GATE UP, WITH THEIR NOSES, AND GET OUT...... I PUT THE LOCK ON THE GATE, BUT WOULDN'T LOCK IT...... ONCE AGAIN, THEY WOULD MANOUVER THE LOCK TO OPEN, AND SLIDE IT OFF THE GATE LATCH...... THEY TAUGHT EACH OTHER.................
We have gates made of metal so pur future puppy wont jump over cause i have heard horor stoies of dobies jumping over in the street and they got hit by a car and they got hurt or died💔 tganks for the imfo 😁😁😆
Only problem I ever had was WITH a privacy fence because they couldn't see what was going on in the world. Dug out several times. 5ft chain link fence.....no problems whatever.
Didn’t understand the point of this video. They can fly over this fence. Not sure if coyote roller would work for a Dobbie. I would install 2 of them. One on top and one in the middle. But yes, huskies will find ways to get out no matter what. I’m here cz my 100 lbs Rottweiler can clear a 6ft fence sitting down. Sigh
What is that -fence 6 foot ???-180 cm high and you ,yourself can see everything on other side -so much for privacy . Hmm??? You must be way above 2 m .Who would want somebody with that high live next door ?? .No way hose

My Doberman and Jack Russell/chihuahua mix are best buds, but the little one gets annoyed with our dobies energy... she’s a lazy little thing. 😂

I live in a tw park with not much of a yard
Not sure what I m going to do

Yeah, unfortunately for me, my Belgian Mal doesn't need really any room to run. Great ideas, but all I've done, nothing that's gonna stop her.
I have about 40 acres and no fence. Getting a doberman in 3 weeks and this definitely concerning..
13 acres here with similar concern

Do dobermans and greyhounds get along well?
I subbed
Thank you so much for the sub! Very much appreciated!
I've got a MinPin that climbs over a chain-link fence like a human would
I have a pitbull and he can clear all your walls without running. He just sits in front of a wall, aims and boom he's over.So i had to train him not to do it.Luckily for me got the picture very quickly.
cheslyn holland how did you train him because mines can run and sit like yours
Mine was always jumping over the fences and hedges if someone called her she would also dominate any male dog didn’t want to be mounted
Can I use doberman for hunting???
Yes doberman are quite good at hunting
@Cruiser even pug?

My rotterman is an escape artist.
I rescued a Jack Russell terrier that could get out of any fence, get out of any yard anywhere his name was Rodie.
Perfect name, like "roadie", can't tie him down!
I have a doberman.
8 foot fence for me then cuz I'm getting a male doberman.
Only problem I ever had was WITH a privacy fence because they couldn't see what was going on in the world. Dug out several times.
5ft chain link fence.....no problems whatever.
Interesting! Thanks for posting. Never saw that myself!
I have a doberman Shepard and she can jump a 6 foot fence like nothing and my grandpa said he seen her jump it in one leap 😂
Doberman - 35 mph
Greyhound - 55 mph

Ummm I don’t have a fence
We had to use a electric fence to keep my one escape artist in the yard.
