That room would be built differently today if the movie were being reshot- speaking in there sounded like you were in a can. It was awful. When I say this team worked miracles, I truly mean that. You have to watch the movie in its entirety and you'll change your mind immediately. It's BRILLIANT! The singing is amazing. You will be hooked and seated instantly by the opening sequence, which is a breathtaking cinematic masterpiece accompanied by the iconic score. It transitions into a BRILLIANT opening performance of No One Mourns the Wicked, which is so much better than the stage musical version. Virtually every performance is better in the film version because you get to see and feel SO MUCH MORE emotion in the performances. Defying Gravity is awe-inspiring and more POWERFUL than ever! You get to see Elphaba come into her power unlike any version you've seen before, thanks in part to the addition of so many amazing cinematic moments to heighten the experience. It's a truly masterful, jaw-dropping showstopper! "The Wizard and I" is great and so much more nuanced than the stage version. It builds and builds throughout until it reaches an explosive climax at the end, similar to Defying Gravity, but to a lesser extent. Popular is phenomenal! What a showcase for Ariana! The same can absolutely be said for Jonathan Bailey in Dancing Through Life, too. That's probably the best dance number also. Cynthia is breaks your heart with, "I'm Not That Girl." The entire film is WOW moment after WOW moment. All that to say, trust us...don't judge the movie, music or songs until you see them in the context of the entire movie experience.
The few clips I had seen prior to seeing it in theaters yesterday had made me nervous, but when I actually saw it in theaters...the movie is breathaking. I don't know if it's just something with the UA-cam version, or what, but trust us, it surpasses any expectation we had.

They sing live when filming but they usually go in and put the studio soundtrack in. You can tell it’s the same recording as the studio one on Spotify. They may have recorded it live, but the producers probably went in and put in the studio recording into the final edit.
It’s because the area where cynthia erivo is a bit smaller in terms of space within the room. While ariana grande’s area in the room takes up most which is why it’s not echoing.
Jaron M Legrair Studio has put out some reactions to Wicked. He used the soundtrack, not clips from the movie, but they're really good, if you want some more reaction content.

Running and singing? 100%. Just wait until you see Defying Gravity because Cynthia sings the last half of that song flying around on wires, in a harness AND corset and is singing live the entire time. She did all her own stunts and was pulled and whipped around through the air in every direction, including upside down, loop de loops and all kinds of craziness. To keep her cardio and vocal stamina up, Cynthia started her cardio (running and biking) at 2am EVERY morning. She ran or biked for MILES each morning, all while singing the entire time to get used to singing like that. Then, around 4-4:30am, she immediately went from her cardio to hair and make-up for 2½ to 4 hours (depending on how much of her body needed to be green for that day's scenes). It's insane but it paid off 1000x over.
It’s because Cynthia is supposed to be in a tiny corner of the room so her voice would be more quiet than Ariana’s who has a bigger portion of the room
Christopher Scott was the choreographer. If you’ve ever watched so you think you can dance, he did choreography pretty much every season there and won several Emmy awards for his work.
What is the exact interview you’re talking about? I have watched several interviews with the cast, director, costumer designer, and more. The only thing I’ve heard any of them say is that the vocals you hear throughout the film are *all* live vocals, which makes your comment fascinating to come across, lol.
@@kate_m_k88 It was actually an interview with the OG himself, Stephen Schwartz. He said it was "mostly" live where they could. But there were parts where they had to record it in studio.
It was all live but they spliced in different takes when there was a sound issue or something. There might’ve been a few pick-up lines in the studio in parts where the vocal sounded too crunchy in every live take. Many people who worked on the movie have said it was fully live other than the orchestra
Not watching this movie in the theatre is a GIANT loss! Everything is SO MUCH bigger and grander! Don’t miss out on it! Streaming will never reach that epic feeling
You need to see Cynthia and Ariana's full performances. Cynthia is AMAZING throughout the film, as is Ariana Grande. In a film (vs a stage musical), isolated performances just don't do the film justice.
Maybe it’s because she’s supposed to physically be in the small, tight corner of the room she’s singing in and it’s still supposed to sound like they’re bantering and not performing the song
fun facts apparently Ariana is a wicked fangirl, and this is my fav song from the whole thing i mean i always found how the setup is classically the first-time good vibes set up then it becomes a rug pull talking about how they hate each other to be hilarious
I think the vocals were an experimental choice done on purpose to put emphasis on how empty Cynthia feels inside by using the visual of her sparse area of the room with nothing but herself and the bed and then recording her vocals with a lower quality mic that further emphasizes her not coming from wealth ( that is a subconscious conclusion we naturally take note of) Then the dynamic of Ariana who is wealthy, surrounded by her wardrobe and other belongings that would absorb her voice and the polished sound along with her hair and makeup done so obviously subconsciously gives the vibe that she is more wealthy, full of self confidence and is not timid. The blend of the sound when they sing together is supposed to represent how their differences compliment each other…..just my opinion though
You need to WAIT until the movie releases to listen to all of the songs!! Mainly because the soundtrack vocals have pitch correction when the movie versions dont
Wow. Amazing vocal analysis, and you need to sing more in videos. I had no idea just how talented you are. Please sing more as examples in your future videos
I think the reason Cynthia sounds a little more echoey at the beginning is because Glinda has this wide open room with plush furnishings and drapes meanwhile she sticks Elphaba in a little alcove off to the side and because Elphaba wasn’t expecting to stay there she didn’t have anything with her so her room is bare walls and minimal furnishings, realistically there would be acoustic differences in the two spaces
I think you should watch it in theatres cause it’s only coming out on streaming in march and seeing it on a small screen and headphones will do it injustice
I do hear the echo in Cynthia's voice but it's definitely not as noticeable when I saw it in theaters, not really sure what happened with her mic since both of them were singing live.
0:55 the fact that people don't understand technology amazes me. The green skinned lady definitely has an echoed voice that sounds like she's speaking in an environment where it isn't sound proof. Its not because she doesn't have both headset ears on, that's not how sound works. 😭
Lady you’re killing the vibe. The movie was absolutely insane. You will leave the theater with no bad feelings. Why not go watch it before posting spot what everyone else has already fallen in love with. Cynthia sounded angelic the entire time. Ariana included.
Killing the vibe how? I appreciate that she is waiting to watch live with her fans. Everyone has their own opinions. I personally didn't care for Cynthia's vocals throughout most of the movie. I loved her acting tho.
It’s not like that in theaters. Idk what is going on in the CD. There’s a lot of overcorrection too, especially in popular too. It truly is a very different experience in the theater.
For some reason on the official UA-cam video Cynthia’s beginning part only plays in my right headphone I guess they were trying to do the back and forth headphone thing but Ariana sounds full in both lol
13:40 yup you guessed it right! Not everything is recorded on set since that would be impractical to do. Stephen said that they tried to record as much as possible on set then used studio recordings to replace certain parts like large crowd shorts, group dancing, some wide shots, etc. You can't just record vocals when there are huge dance sequences, that would need them to put in-ears on everyone one of them, use custom shoes to eliminate noise, and other unnecessary things just make sure the recordings are clean. Plus if you have any background with filmmaking or editing or just having an ear, you can obviously hear where the cuts between on-set and studio vocals happen. It's actually jarring the first time I've heard of those cuts like in the beginning of Defying Gravity.
I agree, I'm not sure why Cynthia sounds echoey at the beginning. It kinda bothers me too. I bought the soundtrack version on iTunes today, and she doesn't sound like that on the soundtrack. Not sure why they left it in the movie that way.

Many people who worked on the movie have said it was fully live other than the orchestra
wear your headphones properly grandma
You HAVE to make sure you see it on a movie screen! Maybe next year I s'pose...
"i blame you" and i blame you for not wearing your headphones like a normal person like what
Not watching this movie in the theatre is a GIANT loss! Everything is SO MUCH bigger and grander! Don’t miss out on it! Streaming will never reach that epic feeling
amazing queenn the songs are stereo so you have to have both headphones on
You need to see Cynthia and Ariana's full performances. Cynthia is AMAZING throughout the film, as is Ariana Grande. In a film (vs a stage musical), isolated performances just don't do the film justice.
i think this is sung live to some extent, because in this part 10:02 the girl has her voice louder than the rest of the ensemble
It's confirmed they sang live.
Girl just go see it, we won’t be mad. This movie deserves to be seen on the big screen. Would be a shame to miss out on that.
INSTEAD OF YAPPING, JUST WEAR YOUR HEADPHONES PROPERLY.
Do I have to remind everyone that the songs sang on set WERE SANG LIVE ON SET?
It’s how Cynthia’s voice is!
The ensemble was recorded separately by former stage Elphabas, Glindas, Boqs, and Nessaroses.
So not the voices of the people on screen? Does that include the supporting characters also lik Boq and Galindas friends?
Doubtful since everything was sang live on set
You need to WAIT until the movie releases to listen to all of the songs!!
Mainly because the soundtrack vocals have pitch correction when the movie versions dont
This is literally from the movie. Don’t be an idiot
Idk what it is but Ari’s face in this reminds me of Britney Murphy at a few points during this number 😭
As one of your patrons, seriously we don’t care if you wait to watch it on streaming. Go enjoy it like we get to!!!
Yeah, i don't understand why you wouldn't see it in theaters. You deserve to experience it that way. Us viewers will be fine. Go have fun!
yeah cynthias voice doesnt have an echo i've seen the movie twice and it sounds normal
Wow. Amazing vocal analysis, and you need to sing more in videos. I had no idea just how talented you are. Please sing more as examples in your future videos
I think the reason Cynthia sounds a little more echoey at the beginning is because Glinda has this wide open room with plush furnishings and drapes meanwhile she sticks Elphaba in a little alcove off to the side and because Elphaba wasn’t expecting to stay there she didn’t have anything with her so her room is bare walls and minimal furnishings, realistically there would be acoustic differences in the two spaces
pleaseeee just go see it in theaters, just give us a review as soon as you get out the theater! I hate that you're missing out
The choreographer is the legendary Christopher Scott (Zombies, Teen Beach Movie)
The versions of the songs on youtube are studio recorded. They only sung live in the actual movie
the echoed voice at the start literally doesn’t bother me at all idk
Don’t worry about Cynthia. She sounds amazing in the movie in the Theater.
I believe they do sing live on set. There are clips that show them doing that (though not for this song specifically)
Elphaba is muffled in the beginning because her tiny space in the dorm room is hidden behind a mountain of Glinda’s stuff
I think you should watch it in theatres cause it’s only coming out on streaming in march and seeing it on a small screen and headphones will do it injustice
I have seen a number of videos where Ariana would do a great job at mimicking other singers' voices.
It doesn’t sound like that in the movie theatre at all though.
It was recorded live.
It wasn't at all @@illogical001
I promise it’s epic in theatres I think it’s how they set the panning from left to right.
?? No baby you're killing the vibe x
The music is panning, it won't sound right if you only have one side of the headphones on.
Please see the movie in the theater! This movie needs to be seen on the big screen!!!
the freaking professionalism of waiting to stream it so you give your reactions to your fans is something to applaud.
but at the same time… don’t do it gurl! enjoy this on theatres PLEASE!!
@pichirandoms8301 I wouldn't have that commitment either. I'd be going to the premiere as I actually did. Lmao
How can a person doesn't like a song bcs the voice of one person sounds just like how she is bothered by her roomate
you NEED to watch this in theaters likee
please don't be a nitpick. this movie is great. get over it.
She can have her own opinion. Get over it.
@regines7486 aight bozos. Get over it.
It’s not like that in theaters. Idk what is going on in the CD. There’s a lot of overcorrection too, especially in popular too. It truly is a very different experience in the theater.
cant wait for you to breakdown defying gravity which imo gives the original a run for its money love the vids keep up the good work.
Can’t wait for you full reaction omg you are gonna love it ❤
I agree, I'm not sure why Cynthia sounds echoey at the beginning. It kinda bothers me too. I bought the soundtrack version on iTunes today, and she doesn't sound like that on the soundtrack. Not sure why they left it in the movie that way.
it’s not when i watched it in theatres
😂😭🤣 ma'am put the headphones on right
She has it on right 😂
@@TristinWright-zk9cjno she doesn’t
@@lauren_on_mainstreet yes, she does 😂
@@TristinWright-zk9cj she literally doesn’t she turns her head at the start and you can see the headphones are not even, one is behind her ear and not on correctly, multiple people have pointed this out 😂
@ lol, no. They aren’t uneven. They are both on her ears. U just think it’s not because of how her hair looks on that side.
