+HappyHalfman For some reason, Japanese senses of humour always really get me. They're just really naturally funny in this almost "dull" very plain kind of way. Subtle? That whole interview was really cute
+warnado kasper Definitely agree, but its a damn shame people like to discriminate even in their own Melee community to "The Doc Kids" when part of the reason of the Doc was to GET more people into the scene and understand and appreciate the history. It happens a bunch when a community is small [Take Xenoblade Chronicles for example] and gets sudden big exposure and brings a lot more fans [Smash 4 and partly arguable Chugaa's LP] that we get the "Hipster oldie fans" trying to maintain their little circle.
+Alexander Michaels I'd call mango a drunken douche based off the doc....and some tourneys....and some interviews....and scar and toph stories.....and his own steam, lol
+Bowserslave I get why people like to alienate the doc kids, as even though it's arguably one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, it had a lot of inaccuracies such as the PC, Kdj, and M2K triangle, it wasn't that one sided. And it also for some reason excluded Neo, one of the most fearsome players regarded by many veterans. However it is still a nice summarization of Melee's history . But all that "I'm really feeling it" crap is cancer, Xenoblade was a great, serious rpg that had Shulk, a protagonist that had a lot of character until exposure from Smash poisoned his reputation into a memed whore instead of a time-controlling god.(sorry spoilers but oh well)
Bombsoldier: "I thought you were a pretty strong opponent." Captain Jack: "What did you think of Masashi?" Bombsoldier: "He was incredibly quick." Captain Jack: "Korius is asking as well, what did you think of him?" Bombsoldier: "He was easy."
Hi friends. I was the one who translated the interviews! It's been a long time since then, and this was the first translation job I ever did, while I was still learning the language. That being said, there is a mistake at one point in my translation. I did talk with Prog about adjusting the subtitles a few years ago when I first noticed the error, but I was told it would be too difficult to change. Anyway, it only just occurred to me to maybe write something in the comments about it, so here it is: At 14:36, Captain Jack asks Bombsoldier "What about Douyara?", to which bombsoldier replies "威圧感(いあつかん)がある". This translates to "He's intimidating." or "I'm intimidated by him." However, the phrase I heard was "いい奴(やつ)感(かん)がある", which I know now is incorrect phrasing and would never be used. I double checked it with a friend at the time, and they agreed that it was correct so it ended up being the one that was translated. It hurts to know I was wrong but I figure it's better to be up front about it than ignore it! So glad I was able to work on this and bring some of these older interviews outside Japan!
Cool! You seem to really care about your craft if you came back from all these years Is there any other public notable translations you've worked on since then?
Wow, Bombsoldier's Falco looks so much like Falcos do today! I've never heard of him, but it looks like he initially innovated Falco as a character! That's crazy.
Ken had to take a lot of hate for Melee to progress it seems....the scapegoat for our revolution. Like he said, when M2K does chaingrabs it's super hype and everyone loves it nowadays. Ken will always be king of Smash to me.
goes to show the importance of tech sharing through different means prior to the age of the internet blowing up. It really lifts up the scene from even beyond the ocean and has very long term implications.
What happened to Ken's audio during his interview segments? He looks like he's on a lav mic but theres a BUNCH of echo and reverb like it's coming from a camera mic far away from him.
Bullying is a local thing. When you go somewhere else than for example school and meet other people, it doesnt follow you. A big community hating you is worse in my opinion. Harder to get away from and more people involved. As Ken said, he was an American who represented America in Japan. Even if he won, he got hate from the very people he represented, while the opponent got praised. That's tough for a young guy.
most people don't care about school bullies but people do care about bullies in their favorite game cause u like it and u don't want to quit because of them
This set was what first got me interested in competitive Melee, even though I only saw it years later (I first saw it roughly around the time Brawl came out). Legendary.
This is one Smash Bros documentary that I can definitely say is on par with/comparable with EastPointPicture's documentary. REALLY good work done here,Last Stock Legends. KEEP IT UP!!!!
13:20 I was THOROUGHLY impressed when I saw that!! Innovation. TRUE thought and adapt among move use!! NOT just the use of learnt combos..... THAT is MELEE!!! THAT is a peak for competitive play.
Choosing to main Falco back in 2004 reasoning : "Bombsoldier got 2nd in a major tournament and look at that sick tech by him! I wanna learn that!" Choosing to main Peach in 2008 reasoning: "Armada won a tournament with peach! Let's main her!" Choosing to main Yoshi in 2014: "aMSa just bet M2K at Kings of Cali 4"
+SonicTriforceLego like able is entirely subjective homie. people also didn't like Ken during the time of the video. Aka that's your opinion and not a fact.
I'd argue the similarity is in the hate for their playstyles. Where chaingrabbing was viewed as lame in kens era, Hbox's playstyle is widely panned as lame as well
+Jigglypuff Tutorials HBox is waaaaay more disliked than Ken was. I was into the scene back then, and I'm into it now, and I can tell you that Ken never got half the hate Hbox gets.
I like to think Bombsoldier went to college, got a real nice job, married a beautiful honey, had a couple of kids who now both play falco, and they agree to no lasers when they ditto
Love the increase in production value Melee's getting… great intro, great work. Increased expectations though, gotta de-interlace that shit and make sure your interview audio is on point. Keep it coming though, awesome job.
i cant believe how crazy good the editing and production value is to this doc XD keep it up!. also whats the song that played at the beginning for the intro?
if it wasn't the sick falco players throughout the generations... I wouldn't have enjoyed watching melee for so long. Bombsoldier PC Chris DaShizWiz PPMD WestBallz
Been so long since I watched it. Two icons facing each other and both players popularize their mains. Thankfully the toxicity wasn't that bad and Ken's still doing good. Time do sure pass by.
Finally! I think most people watching this come from the Smash doc, so it's really good to see new footage and some re-edited older stuff. This was really well put together. I also like that you included some music credits towards the end, while playing snippets from the songs used. Though, the audio for the Ken interview could definitely have been better. Maybe it wasn't really possible to get a better location with less echo, but I think the overall mixing could have been improved. Either way, I look forward to whatever you put up next.
In the description they say that the audio recorder failed during Ken's interview, so they had to use backup audio that unfortunately sounded bad. But it's better than nothing haha.
Ken will always be the King of Smash. PC Chris came along after Ken had all his success and wasn't in it as he was in the beginning. I wish I could have seen PC vs Ken right from the start. I think Ken would have killed it.
Currently not much, most notable players like cap.jack is rarely been heard. The last time heard from the Japanese competitive scene was a smash 4 tournament where M2k and MK Leo attended.
Captainjack is incredibly charismatic. That bombsoldier interview seemed almost scripted.
+HappyHalfman For some reason, Japanese senses of humour always really get me. They're just really naturally funny in this almost "dull" very plain kind of way. Subtle? That whole interview was really cute
Timestamp?
I love learning about Smash's history. I wasn't around during the beginning so these video's are a great way to still learn about it all.
+warnado kasper Definitely agree, but its a damn shame people like to discriminate even in their own Melee community to "The Doc Kids" when part of the reason of the Doc was to GET more people into the scene and understand and appreciate the history.

Now ur old
Captain Jack seems like such a fucking cool dude
Bombsoldier: "I thought you were a pretty strong opponent." Captain Jack: "What did you think of Masashi?" Bombsoldier: "He was incredibly quick." Captain Jack: "Korius is asking as well, what did you think of him?" Bombsoldier: "He was easy."

Now people are sad when you drop a chain grab.
+Zac Clark Oh, I should've listened longer.
Lol gotta love how passionate Isai was about 64
I see you in every video that is related to melee :p
what is this "was" shit?
adrian beltran beltran is
I wish I could think of a tag as cool as "bombsoldier"
Bombsoldier's tag is...bomb. *smirks*
Love learning about the history. Another amazing story guys. Well done.
Wow, Bombsoldier's Falco looks so much like Falcos do today! I've never heard of him, but it looks like he initially innovated Falco as a character! That's crazy.
Yeah, we could even say that what marths and falcos are today, is thanks to Ken and Bombsoldier.
to me the Ken era will always be the best as a kid smash was so deep. Obviously now it's crazy but there's something about early smash.
the reason it feels like the best to you is because it was a mysterious era in the game's life, filled with significant and frequent innovation.
@@ninezerotwo1778 damn..
God everytime I look at Toph all I think about is him saying quit quit bro quit
Ken had to take a lot of hate for Melee to progress it seems....the scapegoat for our revolution. Like he said, when M2K does chaingrabs it's super hype and everyone loves it nowadays. Ken will always be king of Smash to me.
I love when ken says "monster" tippers it cracks me up for some reason
It's the W that counts

this stuff happened when i was a baby. It’s fascinating to learn about this period
"Falcos just used to stand around and spam lasers." Looks like Falco has come full circle thanks to Slippi.
Chaingrabs and pillar combos broke onto the scene here, really crazy
What happened to Ken's audio during his interview segments? He looks like he's on a lav mic but theres a BUNCH of echo and reverb like it's coming from a camera mic far away from him.
they said the guy managing it messed up
This was great. Wish Ken's audio were a bit clearer, but overall great stuff.
I feel ya, it was the size and emptiness of the room that echoes his voice. its alright, I can hear him enough
very cool video! With all the new spectators getting into melee, it's always nice to look back at times before armada, leffen, mango and such.
Immediately liking the video
+Lame-u Hakurei I almost forgot to do it. Thanks
this is amazing
Yup
That was seriously a good match. These legends have nothing more than my respect
I never really thought about how rough it must be as a teenager to get hate from a whole lot of people all the time.
It's called bullying.. lol. Most people go through it.
Have you ever been a kid before?
Of course I've never been a kid. Don't be silly.
Bullying is a local thing. When you go somewhere else than for example school and meet other people, it doesnt follow you. A big community hating you is worse in my opinion. Oh the nostalgia, these were very fun days, i used to play marth and my friend falco, we got pretty good thanks to these two, 11 years ago.
In other words, Toph bodied Bombsoldier in 2011 lol
This is one Smash Bros documentary that I can definitely say is on par with/comparable with EastPointPicture's documentary.
REALLY good work done here,Last Stock Legends.

Chris Pham so much history man
and now he won a big house and many other tournaments
Lots of parallels between the Ken hate and Hbox hate
+SonicTriforceLego like able is entirely subjective homie. people also didn't like Ken during the time of the video. Aka that's your opinion and not a fact.
+SonicTriforceLego that has nothing to do with you saying hbox is unlikable as a fact
Make a video on neutral game.
wow this was super great. it is nice to see these sorts of videos about events that took place before I got into melee
Haha, those interview questions with Bombsoldier were pretty hilarious. Obviously a charismatic guy.
god imagine being that good at the game and then not playing ever again:((((
I like to think Bombsoldier went to college, got a real nice job, married a beautiful honey, had a couple of kids who now both play falco, and they agree to no lasers when they ditto
Kieran Crawford he played on aMSa’s stream recently. The kid’s still got it!
ayo here to get the algo rolling, classic melee stories are still great after so many years! Can't wait for season 2!!!!
jesus christ the echo
This channel deserves so many more subs
thats great, all this footage and more in depth stuff on what happened back then, loving it! keep it coming!
really well done video. I think smash bros has greater stories than any other competitive video game that I know about.
Gotta love old school smash.
Love the increase in production value Melee's getting… great intro, great work. Increased expectations though, gotta de-interlace that shit and make sure your interview audio is on point. Keep it coming though, awesome job.
These videos are so sick. Please keep up the good work!
ending = godlike
The intro for this is so sick
Thank you for creating the meta of probably the coolest character in melee
I wonder where we would all be if we didn't have these iconic players paving the way. Great video 10/10!
remember guys you can make a difference to
this man was 12 and he made such an impact with one set
Oh man I got goosebumps when they introduced the new falco mains... PC Chris... then I heard Shiz... ohhhhhhh man. WHAT A SICK VIDEO!
Very good video.
So this is the new smash documentary.
Thank you BombSoldier, for the great marths you've inspired!
But bombsoldier was the falco
+LazyHippo101 oh, mistype...
KEN SAID MONSTER TIPPERS Kreygasm
I cant get over how amazing their logo is
8 years ago is insane...
0:01 god damn why did they pick that room for an interview lmao, holy shit the echo
Toph sounds older than he does now lol
The editing is really good
i cant believe how crazy good the editing and production value is to this doc XD keep it up!. also whats the song that played at the beginning for the intro?
Might be the best melee video
Bombsoldier needs to make a comeback and save Falco!
1:03 OMG all those Gamecube controllers...
Holy fuck I found another interesting melee series LETS GO!
Come back PP ;-;
Imo coolest gamer tag ever
can there please be a LSL for EVO 2007?
What up with that GameCube at 0:47? Light up controller ports? That's awesome. Where can I get one?
this is a great story! I would love to hear the one about Armarda at Genesis 2009!
We need this.
"Ken, notable victories: [EVERYTHING]"
Ayyy shoutouts to Dizzkidboogie playing the vid out with the Kyle Athayde Dance Party
if it wasn't the sick falco players throughout the generations... I wouldn't have enjoyed watching melee for so long.
Bombsoldier
PC Chris
DaShizWiz
PPMD
WestBallz
Mango has a sick Falco too! Ginger also
Good stuff. If I could make a request, more Isai stories and videos please.
This set kinda revolutionized melee.
I'am very late for this but please do more of these
Isai's such a legend
Been so long since I watched it. Two icons facing each other and both players popularize their mains. Thankfully the toxicity wasn't that bad and Ken's still doing good. Time do sure pass by.

Smash is fun
check out kens sick dad shoes
I can confirm. My dad owned those shoes.
well he is 30 or 31 already
Y'all need to do one about the S2J and Abate Match at BH5.
Who is the early technical Falco player that Toph is speaking about? Sounds like something like Zulgsidas.
Do Captain Jack or Bombsoldier still play any Smash game today? Is there kinda recent footage of them on UA-cam?
7:35 minutes into the video and i feel like an old man
Ken is still my favorite.
ken v bombsoldier is what inspired me to main falco and marth
"Not fun for the spectators" *cough Hungrybox cough*
If anything this just goes to show that melee won't die because of a vocal minority whining.
***** 80%? nice anecdotal statistics
Ken will always be the King of Smash. PC Chris came along after Ken had all his success and wasn't in it as he was in the beginning. I wish I could have seen PC vs Ken right from the start. I think Ken would have killed it.
Do one of this but with Armada about Genesis1
How's the Japanese melee scene doing nowadays? Don't really get to hear much of what comes outta there...
The only notable Japanese person that plays Melee right now is AMSA, a Yoshi main. Other than that, nothing too much Melee-wise.
They moved on to smash 4.
The only country that currently has a sizable melee scene is United States.
Currently not much, most notable players like cap.jack is rarely been heard. The last time heard from the Japanese competitive scene was a smash 4 tournament where M2k and MK Leo attended.
cpt jack as well was a fucking beast
this was awesome, thanks!
Loved the video just some constructive criticism:
the audio just sounds weird
Masashi, Rain CaptainJack, old school players still compete to this day.
Amazing piece of story...
this. is. amazing!
never realized how young bomb soldier was...
Does anyone know song that plays during the part that bombsoldier starts messing up Ken? I looked through the soundcloud artists but couldn't find it.
"petrichor" from my hex phase EP at neonshudder.bandcamp.com - there's a link in the description
Neon Shudder-Petrichor
this videos are so damn good
who would hate chain grabbing as Marth I love seeing that when that happens
Ancient falco player of the past
