This is the nicest looking MiG-17 I have ever seen. I'm really impressed by the amount of time and care they've put into it. I respect people who are passionate about saving pieces of modern history like this plane for the benefit of educating our children. Greetings from Sweden!
Randy, just needed to say thanks for the walk around of the 17. I started a project several yrs ago and am still doing research. You answered several questions I had. Great information. Beautiful bird too.
A few years before he broke my heart. In a History Channel Documentary, Randall "Duke" Cunningham said, "I looked over my shoulder and saw his little Gomer scarf, with little Gomer goggles"...
Your walkaround in this channel is FANTASTIC. We learn so much from your videos. I just hope you guys so the same - even if its a Cessna or a private jet - all equally interesting!
Awesome! Three items I found most interesting: The mechanical pins that indicate landing gear position, the speed brake that can be used at any speed up to Mach, and the fake pitot tube ;-) .
ive seen the double angled wing here in vietnam on the mig 17s in museums. seems it was a more common mod than i thought. excellent aircraft description and replacing all the tin on the plane explains why it looks so wrinkle free!
Love it! Except the ejection thing regarding tomcats. YES there is an interlock where the seat catapults cannot fire until the canopy is blown off, however there is a reason that the pre ejection procedure for a flat spin in the Tomcat is DIFFERENT from standard ejection. When falling flat it creates a low pressure area above the canopy and without forward motion the canopy isn’t guaranteed to be clear prior to the rear seat catapult firing which would lead to that scenario. There’s a reason the spin recovery procedure in the F-14 has an extra step. 1. STICK: forward/neutral lateral, HARNESS: LOCK 2. THROTTLES: Both Idle 3. RUDDER: opposite turn needle/yaw (If no recovery) 4. STICK: Turn into needle (If recovery indicated) 5: CONTROLS: Neutralize 6. RECOVER at 17 Units AOA, thrust as required. IF Flat spin verified by Flat Attitude, Increasing Yaw Rate, Increasing Eyeball Out G, AND lack of Pitch/Roll rates: 7. CANOPY: JETTISON 8. EJECT: (R.I.O COMMAND EJECTION) There’s a reason CANOPY: JETTISON prior to ejection is a step in a flat spin, because it WILL come off and disengage the seat/Canopy interlock, BUT it MAY NOT be clear of the RIO seat when it leaves the jet in that situation.
Neat walkaround. But... The fences are for drag reduction by decreasing boundary layer down wash; the tangential airflow will create massive amounts of drag at the wing tip, putting fences in its way will reduce that drag. It's not called IFF, it's RWR. IFF is for radar that is looking at you (it's a responder), so that Soviet radar operators knew you were indeed friendly. RWR has an indicator inside the cockpit and tells you that you are being looked at by a radar. And no, the dihedral is there to reduce the excessive stability provided by the 45° wing sweep (sweep has the same effect as anhedral). Also the flares are for communicating with ground control in case of radio failure.
Actually you're wrong. You're mistaking a wingtip vortex device for a true wing fence - there's zero drag reduction from a wing fence, their sole purpose is to prevent spanwise flow which would otherwise cause the Fresco to "saber dance" at low v/high AOA. Who told you it was for drag reduction?
@@jasoncarswell7458 Original documentation :) The spanwise flow has many effect on the aircraft. You will find that the vortex drag that the wingtip "vortex devices" (winglets) prevent is further increased by span-wise flow. So by reducing span-wise flow on a swept wing design you're fixing a lot of problems at once.
RIP Mr. Randy - Hope HAMM treats your pride & joy (along with the two red hangar roommates- one being for parts) with the upmost respect & never falling short of doing the right thing- keeping your best interest alive
Randy, If that was you at Great Bend last weekend that was an amazing show. You really impressed us drag racers across from the airport. THANKS! Since you were using AB so much, how much fuel was consumed per sortie?
In the early '90's there was a MIG 15 that sat outside a junk/antique store on the East side of Dallas. I don't remember what road exactly, but generally in the direction of Terrell.
Can anybody tell me what he says at 0:23? I hear 'all three landing gear were turned and length,' which doesn't make any sense. It confused the auto-cc too.
Wow even busted history channel over a lie - great job Randy!!! :) We always knew it had hydraulic fluid for ease of piloting but your first hand experience tossed them in the bin ;) 🇺🇸🇷🇺😂👍🇺🇸🇷🇺
Mike Nolan except what happened in the movie is something that can happen in a Tomcat when falling in a flat spin due to area of low pressure created above the jet (massive lifting body), when ejection is commanded the canopy is jettisoned automatically and after a VERY short delay the RIO seat catapult fires. Every time the Handles are pulled. When flying forward there is slip stream to pull the canopy away and the jet is still moving forward. When falling flat that isn’t present. That’s why the pre-ejection procedure for an F-14 includes after step 6 of the spin recovery checklist: IF Flat Spin Verified by FLAT ATTITUDE, INCREASING Yaw Rate, INCREASING Eyeball Out G, AND LACK OF Pitch AND Roll rates.... 7. CANOPY: JETTISON 8. EJECT (R.I.O COMMAND EJECT) It’s to jettison the canopy FIRST which gives the jet time to fall clear of the canopy prior to pulling the handles. When the canopy is gone the RIO seat will instantly be fired upon pulling either handles, giving the RIO time to clear the canopy. If standard ejection just pull handles is attempted, in a flat spin scenario there IS a possibility of a goose type death.
Have you ever landed at Barnstable Municipal Airport on Cape Cod, Mass? One of my classmates claims to have seen a 17 land there two or three times and im just curious.
All Russian aircraft were designed to be able to operate off unimproved runways until the later airliners came along. Russian tyres do not have American or European tread patterns and even large aircraft like the Antonov 12 were routinely operated off grass or dirt runways.
He forget's that the HS-129 B-3 (German anti-tank aircraft designed during World War 2) Had a modified Pak-40 with a revolver style loading mechanism.... That was a 75MM gun strapped to her belly..... So THAT is the biggest gun of any aircraft on any side of its time......
There are multiple AC-130 models which have a 105mm M102 Howitzer. I believe it's the biggest gun mounted on an airplane, ever. And only one P.108A was ever made. Yes, the MiG-17 had a big gun, but there have been much bigger guns on many aircraft.
Alex Turpeinen You are also forgetting the 75mm cannon fitted to the WWll B-25G model medium 2-engine bomber. It was a slightly shorter and lighter version of the M3 main gun mounted on the M4 Sherman series medium tanks.
Sad how a lot of the history of these MiG jets is only referred to for what the Vietnamese and obviously the Russians did (mostly with the MiG-15 than the 17) but they rarely or never mention what the Egyptians did with MiGs against the Israelis and how this MiG-17 wreaked havoc on Israeli armor and even jets during the war of attrition through the Yom Kippur war. Even the vaunted MiG-21's great history is always referred to what Vietnam did against the US when in fact the Egyptians had tremendous success with that aircraft to the point where the actual first air to air kill was an Egyptian MiG-21 against an American cargo aircraft that ignored its warnings after flying over Egyptian territory and eventually was shot down. Yep, the MiG-21's first kill was with the EAF and not Russia or Vietnam. Shows you how much the history channel has its head up its ass!
Alo Randy you must be a very good pilot because your background but why a Russian jetfighter you must be out of your mind you have guts what think the American pilots like you in same airshow with F86 Sabre Nice from Carlos with all respect the Jet is awesome all the best and luck for you Portugal
So if the intake was designed for unimproved airfields as well the undercarriage being capable to use unimproved airfields; then IT WAS DESIGNED FOR UNIMPROVED AIRFIELDS and is not an old wive's tale.
This is the nicest looking MiG-17 I have ever seen. I'm really impressed by the amount of time and care they've put into it. I respect people who are passionate about saving pieces of modern history like this plane for the benefit of educating our children. Greetings from Sweden!
Randy is a good man. He let my wife set in his ride in Joplin Missouri. Outstanding man and his Mig is very cool
Wow, that MiG is kept in pristine condition, congrats!
I'll be seeing him fly it in may!
Randy, just needed to say thanks for the walk around of the 17. I started a project several yrs ago and am still doing research. You answered several questions I had. Great information. Beautiful bird too.
Awesome walkaround of a great aircraft, thank you Randy and Erik!
Glad you enjoyed it
That's some really nice walkaround!!!! Thanks mr. Johnston!

I love walkarounds, great job. Looking forward to this plane in DCS. ;-)
I saw this plane up close. I met and talked to Randy Ball at an airshow at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport Louisiana.
Awesome!
Three items I found most interesting: The mechanical pins that indicate landing gear position, the speed brake that can be used at any speed up to Mach, and the fake pitot tube ;-) .
I love this plane. If I could ever fly any plane I’d fly the MiG-17 .
Thanks for the vid and for taking a good care of this Mig, hope it will return the favour and take good care of you. God Bless from a Russian.
Excellent presentation, Randy! A nice introduction to the features of this classic aircraft!
Wow what a machine! Hats off to you and these guys who keep 'em flyin'.
Beautiful plane & great walkaround.
Great walkaround. Reminds me of friend Bill Reesman and his Mig 17 (YAC ATTACK AIRSHOW) and his night show with the pyrotechnics
Awesome walk around. Thanks for sharing. What an incredible machine
Thanks for the walk around, nicely maintained ship too
Thank you for your love of aircraft. Good aircraft do not have a nationality. It doesn’t matter MIG-17 or F-86 SABRE. Love from Russia...
Самолет в отличном состоянии,видно хозяин ценит. Молодец!

Love those MIGS keep em coming!! :)
Only the BEST videos from ERIK 💯🤟🤠🇬🇧
I'm so excited to watch him fly the mig may 18th!
Beautiful aircraft !
This is what i want for Christmas !!!!
In the late 90's I recall they were advertising early Migs for sale for less than 20K in the US.
Just finishing a model of this 1950's beauty

Legendary aircraft.
An thorough explanation, very good, thanks
Amazing !

Amazingly beautiful and smart design!
Awesome stuff!
+philorkill I appreciate it, it was fun making it. Randy sure knows his stuff about this plane
Randy… you are legend in Poland !!! Please visit us some day !!! Especially Polish Aviation Museum in Cracow.
So capable , monster airbrake must be fun to play with 🤠🤘
Thanks for this vidéo ,very interest for modeler, hello frome france
Thanks for watching!
Very good fighter jet
Mig 17 😍

Did something happen to Randy?
In some how i thought this guy will say: " ... hmmm .. just f*#@ off"!
I wish another more detailed video, and waiting for mig-15 and mig-19.
Awesome!
Used extensively in VM. Though I still like the Mig-19 even though many fewer were flown in combat.
My favorite Mig. I do not know why
Thank you Sir

Mi favorito MIG-17
In the early '90's there was a MIG 15 that sat outside a junk/antique store on the East side of Dallas. I don't remember what road exactly, but generally in the direction of Terrell.
It’s still there
Pure love
I assume the arc of the 23mm and 37mm overlaps at A certain distance?
Абалдеть! Машина как новая!
What exactly does he say about the landing gear when he has his head turned? I can't tell. Thank you
Cockpit tour would have been nice
did the russians just gift it to america or it was captured during the vietnam war??
Cool
+PacificGaming101 Glad you liked it.
I love planes
How does one go about obtaining a mig-17 as their own?
first, make lots of money,
second, buy one.
First secure a couple million dollars then got to a MIG dealership ;)
Go backpacking through the former Soviet Union and at some point you’ll probably stumble upon one of these
@Kris Voin That woud be a low price even for the junk ones that only get throu as ´´decoration´´
there is one available for sale in Australia
Can anybody tell me what he says at 0:23? I hear 'all three landing gear were turned and length,' which doesn't make any sense. It confused the auto-cc too.
New wind design can carry many missile
Pretty little bird.
Wow even busted history channel over a lie - great job Randy!!! :) We always knew it had hydraulic fluid for ease of piloting but your first hand experience tossed them in the bin ;) 🇺🇸🇷🇺😂👍🇺🇸🇷🇺
No Mig!!!! MiG!!!!!!
Mi&G :D
i stands for & in russian
Yes, Mikoyan -Gurevith
I might be wrong, but I think I saw this very aircraft fly at an airshow.
thanks for the top gun spoiler

How about the engine overhaul and engine parts, especially LLP parts, do you have difficulties about that ?
I have seen that exact same MiG 17F with the 1611 number at an airshow
no talk of the s-13 gun camera
Have you ever landed at Barnstable Municipal Airport on Cape Cod, Mass?
One of my classmates claims to have seen a 17 land there two or three times and im just curious.
هذه طاىرتي المفضله حيث طرت عليها أكثر من 1250 ساعه وبعد انتقالي على طاىره مقاتله أخرى
What's the stall like? Can you safely do a spin? Any problems with Dutch Roll?
Muito legal!

With light missile
In the seventies, the Soviets temporarily overtook the US in technical terms, an example of which is this magnificent fighter jet
Where is this airfield?
Had no idea there was IFF
Mig 19???
I love this plane in war thunder
Me man me 2
Two different sweep angles - also on the vulcan B2
...and Saab J-35 Draken
Those are delta's, the Handley Page Victor has crescent wingsweep.
This thing would probably cost you $2000 in Jet-A just to get off the ground

It's MiG! Not Mig.....Mi for Mikoyan. G for Gurevich.
Simon W Thanks, I’ll correct the title in the video listing.
Actually, "M" is for Mikoyan, "i" is for and, "G" is for Gurevich.
Wrong camera. Otherwise, a good video.
Ничего не понял, но видно машинка ему нравится.
They Germans built the biggest and used the biggest cannons they used anywhere from 15mm cannons to 75 and even 88mm cannons in planes
Lamborgatti -47 loved the messierschmits 162s
😅
I have that in gta5 molotok/mig15/mig17
На таком самолёте разбился Юрий Гагарин
