A guide to the Camino Portuguese

- Join me on a Portuguese pilgrimage from Lisbon to Santiago. After Porto, there's a lot of options so I take you through some of these as well show some other of this Camino's highlights. I also talk a bit about the challenges then wrap up by listing out some of the reasons why this might be the Camino for you.

I've read a lot of comments about days spent walking through industrial poligons and leg brushing traffic. So twice I've started in Barcelos and highly recommend it. Little traffic and beauty from the get-go. One day hike to Casa Fernanda, a justified legend of hospitality. There's a nice municipal alberque in Barcelos with a nice meal next door.
Thanks very much for this video. Excellent overview and the idea of an interwoven route between Central and Coastal after Porto, something that the other similar clips not covering.

I walked from Porto to Santiago in the Fall of 2018. My only advice is to NOT walk the central route in the Fall because that's when so many farmers burn the grape vines to, I'm guessing, create ash for the crops. The constant smoke in the air, although it made for some beautiful photographs, also made it very difficult to breathe, especially where the farmers were doing their burning right along the path. Will try it in the Spring the next time. Bom caminho!

Hey! Great video. I'm starting from Porto and have been told many people kind of skip a bit of this walk from central Porto as much of it is industrial and along highways, any thoughts on this?
Hi Ryan, If you're taking the central route out of Porto then, yes, I hear that first stage isn't the prettiest. I really enjoyed walking out of the city along the river to join up with the coastal route. There's a number of places you could join back up with the central route (from the coastal) if you so desired... Bom Caminho!

If you get to the Jardim do Morro then head up from there, you'll be in the vicinity!
Thanks for making this vid. Are the Littoral and Spiritual routes marked or available on an app?
I used the Buen Camino app and there's a section on the Littoral from Porto. You don't need direction really... from the north side of the river, walk to the river then turn right. When you hit the sea, turn right!
There's not much in the app about the Espiritual variant but all the answers should be here in this excellent forum -

Hi Cole, thank you for your very informative video, have a question-does the interwoven route you have presented still involve a lot of roads with traffic?
It's a mix of tracks and roads. Where you're road walking, the roads are very quiet - minor roads
Thank you for this! I am considering this route for my first Camino. Are there any point (Starting from Porto, taking the coast out of Porto then crossing to the central route) that stick in your mind as inaccessible by off road wheelchair? Whilst tiring the cobbles you showed are fine but sand is not. Thanks again.
Hello! The roads and tracks looked OK for an off-road wheelchair. The boardwalks I saw all looked *mostly* OK but many sections were being repaired so would be impassable.

Great vid. Ive done the CF. And Im doing the CP next May. Can you tell me about the types of food that is commonly bought by Pilgrims in Portugal? In Spain I ate lots of hamon con queso (ham and cheese) Boccadilla (Baguette style bread). Also is there similar Menu Del Dia (menu of the day) type offerings for pilgrims, at the cafes and eateries along the route. Planning on the inland way. Cheers
Hey Craig, menu of the day (menu do dia) as well as pilgrims menu are available on the Portuguese way though quality variable as in Spain. I think the best option is stay in Albergues which have a good reputation for their communal meal - as is very much the case at Casa Fernanda

Is there a pilgrim's office in Lisbon like there is one at St Jean Pied de Port? I did the french route early this year and planning on doing the Camino Portuguese next year. I am looking as where to register and get the Pilgrim's Book for the stamps. Thanks.

How many "buffer" days do you recommend I have after the Camino Portugues (starting from Porto & central route)? I'd be flying from the US and am wondering how many days I need in total, especially on the back end of the trip.
If that was me, I'd give myself at least a couple of days in Porto at the start as it's an amazing city with so much to see.
Give yourself a few days at the end just in case you get delayed. You don't want to risk having no time to get your Compostela!

Do you suggest booking all our stays before we go or can we go on the fly and still have a place to sleep. We are going in September.
I'd be inclined to book the first few nights then once you're on the ground you should get a feel for how busy it is then proceed accordingly. Bom caminho!
do you think it s crazy idea walk in jan or feb? I will be starting from lisbon.
I think there's a lot to be said for walking the Camino in the winter and the Portuguese one shouldn't be too cold. It's likely to be quite wet so prepare for that!
Cole what are your thoughts on cycling the Portuguese camino.
I commute to work by bike in London so on the Camino I feel like walking! (Easier to stop and smell the roses). So.....I'm not really qualified to advise re cycling but here are some threads I found on Casar Ivar's very useful forum:

Nice video, one suggestion; sound isn't the best, and consider eliminating the music in the background. It's not necessary and interferes with your good narration.
Not to be controversial, but I liked the music 🎶 maybe just dialled down a little and a wireless microphone for sound clarity 😋 I have the same problem with my videos but with the wind!
