Zoom H6: The Perfect Podcasting Interface

  • A setup walk-through for podcasting with the Zoom H6. After a few frustrating weeks dealing with a audio interface crapping out, I decided to see if I could use my field recorder as a podcasting interface. Turns out not only could I do, but it's awesome.
At this point the Zoom H6 has been on the market for nearly four years and surprisingly there aren't any decently produced videos showing how to use it for podcasting. If you're a podcaster or musician, you need to plug into an H6.

In my opinion you missed a HUGE topic with this video. This video shows the H6 being used as a "pass through device" it essentially becomes a 1/4" to USB interface for hooking devices to your PC/MAC when setup like this.... which is in fact cool. the H6 however is a portable recorder it self. I would argue... don't "record" to the mac at all. Slap a 64GB sd card into the side of the H6 and record directly on the H6. Then when you are done recording, take the .wav files off of the sd card and over to your mac for post production editing. Lets face it, software recorders are notorious for freezing, crashing, etc. When that happens you often lose the recording all together. The H6, is a hardware recorder. It runs on 4 double A batteries, and if you use re-chargeable lithium ion batteries you can get like 1500 hours of record time. Its insane. No crashing, no rebooting, and your totally portable with no need for a studio or wall power at all. Edit on your mac all day long.... but if you have an H6... record on it, don't use it as a pass through like shown here.

I totally respect what you're saying, but pass through allows you to monitor recording o. Your computer screen. Pretty much a necessity when podcasting with others over the web. Also, crashes are super rare and this setup takes out the step of pulling out the SD card. Not a big deal but one less link in the chain

@@FireWiredLife you don't know what you're talking about. you can totally monitor the recording from the zoom without plugging it to the computer. and yes, audio software will crash when you least expect it, so the zoom will remove that worry from your head, which makes for a much better podcast experience in my opinion.

i really wanna know can the two thing works together. so it deliver to the PC (in case wanna do some live streaming) but in the same time the ZOOM record it on multitrack?

Rastho Mahotama the Zoom can either be used as an audio interface and have the audio go directly to a computer software, or it can have the audio put on its own SD card. Can’t do both

From what I have read, the H6 is not ideal for overdubbing. It locks the integrated mic L& R to tracks 1 & 2 and you can’t bounce those to other H6 track locations. So you would need to use different external mics to overdub onto other track locations. There is a renaming the track workaround but you must use your computer to do that. So in the field it appears you can’t overdub using the internal mics (without overwriting the previously recorded internal mic tracks - hence you can’t overdub using the internal mics) also metronome will not click unless you have something recorded already in a project... not a huge deal but not intuitive. Those of you expecting a multi-track field recorder need to bring extra mics, or look at other options like zoom h4. You can bounce mix to your pc and then move back to H6, but again, you would need your computer to do that. The internal mics are hardwired to tracks 1 & 2 and you can’t bounce those tracks to another location internally without a computer - there is no firmware update that will change this.

Hi! I’ve used my H6 as an interface for a year. Suddenly the tracks I’m recording at are empty. The H6 is chosen as an input everywhere and I’m able to record but it doesn’t come any sound waves in to the track in neither Premiere nor Logic. What can be wrong? It works perfectly fine when I’m recording on an SD card, and not straight in to the computer. I’ve turned the computer on and off several times but the problem persists.
I would be SO happy for your help!

Had a technical question regarding Audacity and using an H6 Zoom recorder as an audio interface. Any help would be lovely.
I have somewhat of a technical question with Audacity, not sure where else to ask. I've concluded the issue is within audacity and you'll see why.
I'm trying to use my H6 recorder as an audio interface to record straight into audacity. Now when I attach an H6 Zoom included microphone microphone attachment (XY Mic), it detects the sound on the H6 and records perfectly straight to audacity.
But when I plug in a dynamic microphone thru one of the 4 inputs (a samson Q2U xlr/USB dynamic mic), the H6 recorder detects the sound, but the sound is not detected when I push record on audacity (it's recording but no sound wave),
There must be some setting with audacity I am missing where it isn't recieving the sound which clearly the audio interface (h6) is.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! You explained it perfectly. Made our lives so much easier. I do a podcast too and the reason I looked at using the H6 is because my Yeti broke. Do you think I can get away with using only the mic on the H6 . It is only me doing the taping on my laptop.

Currently got my Beringher Xenyx 802 running into this as a multitrack interface (including a mix minus) straight into Cubase, would this damage my H6? The reason I ask is because the 802 is providing phantom power to my mic and didn't know if the voltage causes damage to the H6 as I have been getting a buzzing from it's speker when recording?

I connected my iPad to H6 and using a 1/8" male to dual XLR male cable and recorded a song from a DAW app on iPad into H6 but the sound came out like mono. The sound on my iPad from the DAW app when listened through headphones plugged into iPad is clearly a stereo as I have an audio song track in it but when recorded to H6, it sounds like mono. I tried both 320 KBPS in MP3 format also 24 bit/96 kHz WAV format with no luck. Also, listened to the recorded audio on the card on my Mac but it still sounds crappy. Can you please help me how to record the sound in stereo exactly as how it sounds on the iPad? TIA

Thanks a lot for the video. What if I have no external mic and want to use the Zoom H6 connected to my PC to record my voice while I am presenting Powerpoint presentation? Would you use the XY mic pointed toward your mouth? I just tried that but I had to put the "gain" to level 10 or 9 on the button on the XY mic to get a decent volume when recording (the zoom H6 was about 16 inches from my mouth).
Also, won't the Zoom capture all the sounds including when I am pressing a key on my keyboard to go to the next slide or when I am clicking the buttons of my mouse?
You advice is welcome. Thanks you again.

Get yourself a lavalier mic (they are quite cheap) which will clip to your tie or collar and plug the jack plug into one of your inputs on the H6. Select the input with the buttons on the H6 ( a red light will turn on to show your levels) adjust to make sure you aren't clipping and away you go.

    • @FireWiredLife

Are you talking about using it as a Shotgun mic attached to your camera? You certainly could but depending on the room it could be pretty reverb or low-end heavy. I have done it before but almost always with a mic running an XLR all the way to the h6.

With proper cabling yes. Take the audio out of your PC using a 3.5mm headphone and wire it to the H6 with a 3.5mm to 1/4" cable. If your PC/Mac no longer has a 3.5mm headphone jack you will have to purchase one. They have several usb device that will add a headphone / mic port to any PC that doesn't have one.

It's infuriating. I have an old Creative EMU-0404 interface, which worked just great for years. But it's been discontinued with no driver updates. And MacOS versions after Yosemite won't support it. And supposedly Win10 won't either. The hardware still works great. But it's useless on a modern computer.
I'm at the point where I'd rather run an old OS with a working tool stack in a virtual machine just to keep everything in a known working state. No updates. No OS upgrades. No internet browsing. Just work. Otherwise, these guys will screw you for upgrades every year.
And yeah, the Zoom H6 is a great tool. Love it.
