I'm a complete wreck after listening to this song. Maria was the name of my mother. I first heard Jean in 1957 when she came to England collecting songs and I've never stopped loving her. It's now 2012 which I make 55 years. Thank you Jean.
It seems like the sort of thing one would feel right after the death of someone loved but difficult, and the grief and unanswerable questions that follow for years.
I miss hearing her every summer at the Woodland Park festival in Lexington KY, back in the early 1990's. That was my favorite summer ritual for a few years.
Morning come and Maria's gone Morning come and Maria's gone Morning come and Maria's gone And it's ear-lie in the morning Oh she's gone and I can't go Oh she's gone and I can't go Oh she's gone and I can't go And it's ear-lie in the morning Morning come and Maria's gone Morning come and Maria's gone Morning come and Maria's gone And it's ear-lie in the morning Never could I know her mind Never could I know her mind Never could I know her mind And it's ear-lie in the morning Morning come and Maria's gone Morning come and Maria's gone Morning come and Maria's gone And it's ear-lie in the morning Trouble, trouble, is my name Trouble, trouble, is my name Trouble, trouble, is my name And it's ear-lie in the morning Morning come and Maria's gone Morning come and Maria's gone Morning come and Maria's gone And it's ear-lie in the morning
you could try it in dorian DAG, theres really only two chords dm and c, or use a noter starting on the 4th fret. In DAG , Dm is fret 6 on the melody the rest open,,the C chord is, 3 on the melody and bass and 4 on the middle..the right hand strum is where the fun is..

Morning come and Maria's gone
Morning come and Maria's gone
Morning come and Maria's gone
And it's ear-lie in the morning
Oh she's gone and I can't go
Oh she's gone and I can't go
Oh she's gone and I can't go
And it's ear-lie in the morning
Morning come and Maria's gone
Morning come and Maria's gone
Morning come and Maria's gone
And it's ear-lie in the morning
Never could I know her mind
Never could I know her mind
Never could I know her mind
And it's ear-lie in the morning
Morning come and Maria's gone
Morning come and Maria's gone
Morning come and Maria's gone
And it's ear-lie in the morning
Trouble, trouble, is my name
Trouble, trouble, is my name
Trouble, trouble, is my name
And it's ear-lie in the morning
Morning come and Maria's gone
Morning come and Maria's gone
Morning come and Maria's gone
And it's ear-lie in the morning
I love it

Aubrey Atwater does a great class on the dorian scale
