Really really enjoyed!! 👍 two things: firstly on a RHD model the windscreen de-mister clears the passenger side first, which is really handy because they can shout if you’re going to crash into something. Secondly, all the doors leak at the top when it rains, but if you’re going at more than about 30mph if you roll down the window very slightly it creates air suction which sucks the rain back out of the gap in the window before it has chance to drip inside the car 😉 you’re welcome 😁

As a Defender 90 owner myself for many years this is the most fun watching video I have ever seen, all you said is true, one of the many funny thing that happened to me a few days after I bought my Defender was that while driving on a dirt road a small stone was caught in the tire tread and when it let loose it hit the steel wheel arch and the sound was like a bullet hitting the body of my Land Rover, after some time inspecting for any bullet holes I just realized what it was 4:54
And it is amazing that when I see other Land Rovers all drivers always wave or smile 10:40
    Owing a Land Rover is a Blessing : )

I love the reflection comment. Only a defender driver would understand. I couldn't count how many times I had a 'what's that' moment before I figured out it was me and not some alien death ray with a near miss.

Ive had my '84 90 since easter '21 and the thing that makes me love it is the wave. 99% of the time another defender waves or flashes or toots their horn at me and it always brings a smile to my face. I watched this video way back before I bought my Landy and despite all its "faults" it made me want one even more, just for the quirkiness

Glad to see that Land Rovers have retained their most enjoyable features since I owned my 1974 Series III. Consistency is important! As my good friend used to say, "It's an enthusiast vehicle." That is, you need to be really enthusiastic to own one.

I love the design feature on mine where if I'm running a tad low on screen wash and there happens to be a small pool of water on the bonnet, if I slow down a wee bit that pool runs off the front and then blows straight back up on to the windscreen, instant screen wash, one quick swish with the wipers and you're good to go again.

    • @ASimplyFabLife
      @ASimplyFabLife  6 років тому +4

Yes! Forgot about that one.... until it rains... ;-) Don't forget the spare tyre on the bonnet. Good water reservoir that does the same thing. Thanks

A friend bought himself a 2015 D90, and it was a gorgeous vehicle. I’ve always loved Defenders but never owned one, so I was excited to finally get to ride in one. And a “new” one at that! Imagine my shock when I got in and he drove us around, and it was identical to being in my shoddy old 1987 Jeep CJ7 lol. Bouncy and cramped inside, lots of creaks and pings and it plodded along.
And I loved every minute of it.

This video is crazy relatable. Every single thing you said were either the interesting quirks I've experienced (and thought deeply) or solutions/answers to A LOT of problems/questions I've had for a long time, like the gearbox heat. You called this your silliest video, I called this the most helpful video so far. I own a defender 110 1992, so I found your 1993 (and their quirks) quite familiar. Thanks!

Brilliant!! I don't have a pair of trousers or shorts without at least on ripped belt loop. The door hinges a quite found of making holes on the seat belt too. Defender drivers are like no other on the road, I think we wave at each other to acknowledge the mutual suffering 😉 My wife and I take our 2013 puma on a road trip to Europe every year, so I'll keep my eye out and give you a wave.👋

I have a TDI300 and a Puma. Living in Namibia, Africa, my Landy's are active every day, not on road, but in the bush. I LOVE my Landy's.
Positives, you can not slam the kids fingers in the doors, gaps are to big.
Another is the perfect flat platforms (mudguards) to put your beer and elbows on while talking to your bud doing the same on the other side.
Onother thing is the personalities. Man, Defender owners are always just the most relaxed people, no matter what the stress, there is always a smile ready to pop out.
Man, and yes, the Landy wave makes my day every time, because Landy owners always greet Landy owners.
    Great video,
Defender wave from Namibia to all you Landy Lovers.

One of the best chapters about the Defender. I’ve loved my HCPU in Kenya to bits, a 1984 model with a Discovery 300 Tdi and its original auto gearbox slipped in. A 110 ? Try it with an auto, especially in mud and sand but also in heavy traffic downtown, and you won’t come back to a manual

My absolute favourite bit of secret genius Land Rover design is the incredible water shifting trick. It can take the smallest of puddles and somehow throw all the water forwards and totally drench the windscreen. I anticipate puddles by turning on the windscreen wipers, this baffles passengers until the visibility is suddenly reduced to zero in a deluge that looks like you've driven off a pier! I love it!

V funny - definitely recognise the trouser holes! On the wiper part, totally true - the fix? Silblades (or if you can find them anywhere else, just a silicone blade) wiper blades are fantastic - I bought some and feel extremely stupid for not removing them after the Defender was written off to transfer them to the new one - they're not cheap but they're well worth the extra.

Thanks for the explanations of puzzling things found on Defenders. Too true. Please don't start on Series Land Rovers because you will need half a dozen videos to cover all their things !! Great viewing. Gaps in bodywork are to allow water in, so traction can be maintained on the riverbed. Cant have it floating, can we ?

Interesting how we as Denedfer owners just embrace all these "little" things. And you did not even talk about the constant marking of its territory (oil dripping) :-) Just love my Defender!! The best car I ever!

I have driven Land Rovers all my life in Africa Rhodesia, Rhodesian Army and in Wales, Driven all over the Botswana bush. Once in the army one broke down but I got it going, In Botswana we lost a half shaft in the bush but it still got us to a garage. In 30 years in Wales I have had 4 landys one Broke down and another the clutch went but I poped it into dif lock and it got me to safety. Once in Wales only ever changed one wheel due to a six inch nail. In 4 landrovers in Wales over 30 years I have never had to buy a new wheel. Thats a good record that no other vehicle could emulate. Land Rover the best 4 x 4 by far.

definitely agree about the handbrake ...when you,re sitting in a queue of traffic facing up hill and the driver behind creeps up real close you,re under pressure cuz the old girl is just waiting for a chance to roll back and destroy.

    Thank You Sir,
A truly entertaining watch about why we love these old Landies; their character !
My S3 will be 50 in a few months, and I use her in woodland and for small journeys, where the DPF on my euro 6 Scooby wouldn't even get to working temp, which is about ten miles. That would be most of the time.
Your car looks like luxury compared with a 1974 S3,for example I’ve 4 drum brakes and no servo assist, which makes stopping much more interesting lol.
The only car I’ve enjoyed driving as much was a 2CV.

Slightly #jealousnotjealous😉. Series does turn heads somewhat more than a Defender!
We also ran an Acadiane for some years, a very similar experience and true to the spirit of less-is-more.
Cheers for the comment. Keep rolling!👍😃

I have a special pair of Landrover wellingtons. Because the water runs down the guttering, then down the ;A ;post, then drips into the top of your wellie's. So to stop your welly's filling up with water Landrover welly's have a half inch hole in the heal of the welly to let the water out. Marvelous. For every problem, there is a solution waiting to be found.

I had to laugh, I used to have a series 3 with a 2 1/4litre petrol, wagon, had lots of wet feet, sponges, warm clothes on in winter, and basically lots of the experiences you talk about plus extra ventilation when the tops of the doors used to pull out in the right wind direction, brakes that used to make me look for all sorts of escape routes, gee there were some close calls! But it was an adventure and achievement getting anywhere, long distances in Oz and trust me it does get cold and wet here, the thing never left me standing I could always fix it, loved it, most of the time!! Wish I still had it.

    • @ASimplyFabLife
      @ASimplyFabLife  4 роки тому +1

Respect sir! A notch above our experiences (a Series does rank higher than a Defender on the totem pole IMHO 👍). Especially travelling Oz! And yes - good point - never actually breaks down as much as ridicule will have you believe. Very reliable, except for one instance (if you're interested type this in UA-cam): "Smallest moving part on a Defender stranded us in Croatia"
😀 Thanks for your comment! Keep rolling!

@@ASimplyFabLife yes I saw that episode, made me think of that saying Scotty had in one of the Star Trek movies , "the more they update the plumbing the easier it is to stuff up the drain" nerdy hey?! I had things like that on the 109, something's on Land Rovers are simply brilliant others have been designed and manufactured by the first year dislectic apprentice!! You got to love them though.

There's a storage space for your flip flops between the seat and the cubby box. Land Rover really thought of everything.

The rain water comes in from the bonnet, they didn't carry the rain gutter all the way to the fender so it dumps all the water onto the bulkhead, which conveniently has numerous holes to allow to dump straight onto your feet;D

Had my Defender for 4 days, and my feet were wet after riding in the rain, but I still love my 90. My husband has his own 110, and he is not allowed to drive my Defender 90.
