Massachusetts Medicare Supplement Plans are not like plans in the rest of the country. There is no Plan G or Plan N in Massachusetts. Rather, Massachusetts has its very own state specific plans for MediGaps. The Medicare Supplement Plans for Massachusetts are Core Plan, Supplement Plan 1, and Supplement Plan 1A. These plans can be likened to the plans in other states, however. The Core Plan is similar to Medicare Supplement Plan A. Supplement Plan 1 is similar to Medicare Supplement Plan F. Lastly, Supplement Plan 1A is similar to Medicare Supplement Plan G. Medicare 2020 changes to Plan F are the same as Supplement Plan 1, in that anyone turning 65 in 2020 or later would not be eligible for this plan.
Massachusetts Medicare Supplement premiums also have state specific rules. All MediGap premiums are community-rated, which means that during initial Medicare enrollment, the premium is the same regardless of age or gender. This means that whether you first enroll into a Medicare Supplement plan at 65 or 95, the premium will be the same. Massachusetts also has year-long open-enrollment, which means you can change your Medicare Supplement plan at any time without having to pass medical underwriting or be exposed to a pre-existing conditions factor. This is quite different than most other states Medicare Supplements.

This video initially caught our attention, as it outlined the Supplement options for Massachusetts residents. We contacted Jamie and she helped us better understand the new process of deciding what are the best choices. We worked with Jamie to sign up for a MA Supplement plan and her service and personal communication was exceptional. Jamie, keep up the good work on the important Medicare topics. Tom & Marga

Why not plan 1 (for those who qualify)?

Typically the premium difference annually between Supplement 1 and Supplement 1A is lower than the Part B deductible, so you are paying more for the 1A than you would if you paid the Part B deductible.

@@medicarebyjamie830 it's 2024 and I look at plan 1 vs 1A for 2025. I see that both plans are very nearly the same price: 1A premium + Part B deductible, vs. 1 premium.

As a Mass resident, I would certainly opt for 1A. I have been led to believe that (in general) original Medicare plus a Medigap plan (e.g. G or N) would be honored in all 50 states. And that there are no doctor network or other such limitations. Is that also true for Mass residents with original Part A, B and Medigap 1A?

I believe so. Note that 1 and 1A cost almost the same: 1A premium + Part B deductible, vs. 1 premium.
