In a Priest Driven Ambulance (With Silver Sunshine Stares) is the fourth album by The Flaming Lips, released in 1990 (see 1990 in music). It is a concept album primarily focused on frontman Wayne Coyne's fascination with religion. It is generally considered among critics to be one of the best early period Flaming Lips albums. It is the first Flaming Lips album to feature Jonathan Donahue (also of Mercury Rev) and drummer, Nathan Roberts. This line-up would subsequently be signed by Warner Bros. Records and go on to record the follow-up album, Hit to Death in the Future Head
It was re-released as a CD with two bonus tracks on January 17, 1995, however the full name with subtitle appears only on the vinyl release.
It was also re-released in a 2xCD special edition in 2002; for more information on this version, see the entry for The Day They Shot a Hole in the Jesus Egg. The first disc of this release, composed of the entire Priest album and numerous bonus tracks, was also released as a limited-edition two-record vinyl release on pink vinyl.
"Unconsciously Screamin'" was released as an EP in 1991 to promote the album. Two of the b-sides were featured as bonus tracks on the 1995 re-release.
Best Lips album ever ❤
Best album from the best band ever
I sense that you are a very intelligent person
God walks amongst us. 630am avoiding yield sign runners in heavy traffic. Their frantic pace to reach the JOB while THC wafts out their windows in a steady drift of burning collosums. Talk about telepathic surgery. I'm giving them all tickets...
Great post. Love this LP. Probably in my top ten, and agreed the best of the Lips. I once worked at an OKC record store that was managed by their manager, so over the early 90s I was lucky to sometimes hang out with Wayne, etc. Was even in a very brief 'band' with Steven and Michael. I had no talent, just no one else wanted to sing. When Jonathan first moved to the city, they gave him a job at the record store so we'd spend hours together. Not a big talker, and not that great at customer service, but a nice guy, brilliant musician. To this day I remember he was (I assume) so broke at the time, that he would bring powered 'slim fast' to work and just eat it dry. Sorry. I'm bored. Anyway, rock n roll. : )
I wandered backstage after one of their shows during the Hit the Future tour. I was tripping and the show had just ended, and I wanted to talk to them about why they played nothing from Telepathic Surgery. They gave me beer and both Michael Ivins and Steven Drozd sat with me and told me all kinds of stories about recording their records and how they thought about them.
Steven, in particular was super kind and chatted with me for a long time. I remember him handing me off saying, "Hey, you talk to him for awhile." I kept thinking I was going to get kicked out, but instead they just kept giving me beer and chatting. It was one of the greatest nights in my life, and this album was a big part of the conversation.
What an awesome story
@@marcusaiello7100 thanks. A time and a place.
One of the best album titles ever.
Wow! Great psychedelic rock! The BEST!
"and I'll hold your electric toaster while
standing in your bath tub of love"
Look up "flaming lips 1995 priest driven ambulance " and you will find a live performance of this beautiful album with Ron on guitars . Just to brag, I was at that show! Used to be uptight ....
Unconsciously Screaming still rocks so hard. Good shit. My favorite Lips album.
Agreed! That and “Mountain Side” are 1-2 punches of brute force distorted goodness, haha.
Jenny it's walter
Oh, cursed nostalgia! Love, love, love this record.
"Tell this machine I'm not a machine!!!"
90 - 95 their best album history!
the best thing they did
A favorite from my shrooom tea years. Sadly, I have no shroom tea.
Flash backs bro, they don’t come as often anymore, but enjoy them when they come. This album sounds perfectly in tune and better than a beetles classic on acid.
one of the most powerful tracks of the flaming lips
yup, it really the guitarist, although i must saw wain does have vision.
I bought this on vinyl when it came out. For me, it was the last decent thing recorded by the Flaming Lips.
Oscar Chile you are a twat.
so fire live this album alot
A fucking huge thanks to Senoretc for reccomending Mercury Rev fucking amazing band,

with silver shiny stars
There you stand
With your bleeding hands
And you don't understand
Why you work so god-damn hard...to be
ANYTHING AT ALL!!!
My favorite Flaming Lips album (some of Wayne Coyne's deepest lyrics and the awesome guitar from Jonathan Donohue of Mercury Rev). I especially dig the songs "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain" and "There You Are". Soundtrack for gray, overcast daze.
RainyDayMerman I think that’s why I bought it. The Mercury Rev connection.
Difficult to age this. Quality.
Pow! love this!!!
Love your username and the Soft Bulletin
wooww!...i m your fan !!....thanks men!!!
But today ain't garbage day.
wayne wrote his address on my copy of this and told me to send my homemade synth to him. pretty rad.
Great album
im sure he did, im Suuuuuure he gave a random person his home address
I bet he's just dying to get raped by a crazy serial killer super stan
Caleb Kendrick, not uncommon back then, I use to chat with him at his home #, after a friend of mine sent him back an effects pedal a mutual friend of ours stole from the HTDITFH tour. Really nice guy
take meta mars is vocally similar to can's "mushroom". im sure that has been pointed out like a thousand times, but im new to this album
"Take Meta Mars" is their attempt at covering Can's "Mushroom" after hearing it for the first time (and only, at the time of recording) the night before at a party. Or at least that's what I think I remember from the liner notes from "The Day They Shot A Hole In The Jesus Egg" (a 2 CD set, with this album as the first disc).
@@thesimulacra so basically they got wasted, heard the song, tried to cover it while probably still wasted...classic Lips.
Their best album by a mile. I was convinced Wayne was a drug monster after hearing this and Hit To Death ....., apparently not at all.
I can't name a favorite album of theirs. So many decades of incredible art. I'm in a blissful state right now listening to them. Thanks to the The Flaming Lips for calming my emotional distress. Lotta death going on here. Glad to see that u guys r still kicking out music that matters.
Joe Dirt It is kinda difficult to pick from so many good albums but 'The Soft Bulletin' was particularly special and 'In A Priest Driven Ambulance' was where it all came together for the band. I think I love 'In A Priest ....' so much cos the songs are excellent but it's also representative of a particular time for me.
Sounds like you're going through a heavy time at the moment, hang in there mate.
The Soft Bulletin has been imprinted in my brain. No going back. Magnificent!!!
Joe Dirt The Soft bulletin is superb, I think they've changed over the years and that album represents them brilliantly but the earlier years are best represented by 'In A Priest Driven Ambulance'. It's so personal picking your favourites, it's more than the music, the times etc. When it comes to Flaming Lips I think every album from 'In A Priest ....' onwards is excellent.
transmissions for me but it was just perfect timing in me yoof and i think Steven Drozd is a factor too..this was the 1st thing i heard by em though. i love early mercury rev too.
just fucking found gold
Try and find 'The Day They Shot A Hole In The Jesus Egg', it's the same album with extra tracks, demos, alternative versions. Definitely their best album, don't know if you've come across Mercury Rev - 'Yerself Is Steam' but you'd definitely love it if you like this. Jonathan Donahue who formed Mercury Rev plays guitar on this and 'Hit To Death ......', another Lips classic.
So happy to hear! It's great to hear about peeps that discover them! Long live the Lips!!!
Anton Haq had that on CD lost it
Ekim Nus I had it on vinyl, think it had an all silver cover but a couple of years ago I bought The Day they Shot A Whole In The Jesus Egg, which is the same album with demos, out takes and some bonus tracks. It makes a great album even better.
4th song is all Can
you're welcome :)
biggest drums kaaaa boom. i get the notch to mercury rev tho for insanity and overall music.
pink vinyl on this one
show me how you cliimb the stairs :~]
Wait, Donahue played on this Lips album? So they're like friends, the two bands? All I know is Lips came first and I have to admit I love Mercury Rev's dreamy sound but how can I respect it when it's like a xerox copy of Lips?!
Ruben Frankin they kinda had a falling out when he left for mercury rev. If you read the book staring at sound it goes into it. And watch the fearless freaks if you havent yet. Even though I know it's entry level stuff for most lips fans it's still just an overall good doc anyways.
ain't that some shit
22:23
dead as fuck.
I HATE Mercury Rev for copying Lip's sound!
