    Hi Kate. I really enjoyed your indepth discussion about the skill building, as well as your presentation style. My suggestion for content going forward: don't get tempted to jump on a bandwagon and become a cookie cutter vlogger (couldn't resist a mixed metaphor) by only making the latest fads. Keep doing what you're doing.

    Hello Kate. This is my first time to look at your channel and I love your style and I love your analysis of the various aspects of each garment. Keep it up and I'm now going to check out your other makes. I also love that I'm roughly your measurements so what looks good on you should look OK on me.

    Hi Kate! You learned a valuable lesson making the Agnes. We, as sewists, are highly critical of our work and notice (or remember) every little mistake. But it's a little like childbirth, it's painful at the time, but a bit later when thinking about doing it again, all you truly remember is how wonderful the end result is. II've been sewing for 4 years. Now I pull things I made as a new sewists from my closet, and think, wow, this is actually quite good and I'm happy I didn't trash it. 😉

    Hi Kate! Chef's kiss for your Hope dress! Love everything about it...cool summer style and fabric choice are spot on. For Big 4 patterns, I've started using my high bust measurement for the bust measurement with much more fitting success. Independent patterns still fit better, but this gets me closer to the fit I prefer. Burning question...are you a broadcaster? Or trained in public speaking? I love watching your videos because you are very entertaining and I marvel at how well spoken you are...no um's or ah's (not that I mind that from other vloggers, just have noticed a complete absence of them in your videos). Also, palm trees in England?!?!?! Never dreamed they would grow in your climate. Please fill me in.

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  Місяць тому

      Thank you! (and sorry for the late reply) I’m definitely tackling the Big 4s with more caution going forward but determined to get them to work for me as they have some lovely designs. Not a trained public speaker and actually doing UA-cam to help me improve. Find that if I’m talking about things I enjoy I tend to do alright with it. As for our palm trees… that’s a whole story in itself…but the ones in our backyard are hardy and suitable for growing in southern UK without too much babysitting. But definitely won’t be growing as fast or as tall as the exact same species growing in my brother’s sub-tropical garden in Queensland!! Thanks for watching ☺️

      @@RipperSeams No need to apologize...you owe me nothing. What a great way to improve public speaking skills. You're ripping it! (Don't you hate it when people try to be cool by using expressions that are new to them?) Keep up the good work. Thank you for the palm tree explanation 🤣

    I’m in awe of your vlogging skills - you are so professional and the way you cut and edit your videos is really skilled.
    Back to the sewing. I love your makes and fabric choices. Your Agnes turned out really well and admire your “all in” approach to that piece. The colours really suit you. I’m always afraid that puff sleeves will make me look wider, I’m only 5ft tall, but you’ve made me reconsider that.
    Love your Hope Dress - as you say a perfect easy breezy summer dress and I agree the fabric is very nostalgic - beautiful! Happy sewing Kate 🧵 😊 🧵

    I sew my neckbands on my sewing machine with a zigzag stitch. I think your Agnes Top looks great! I like your rating system for learning. I notice that often when I finish a project I don't like it right away. I need to set it aside for a couple of days sometimes and then I do. Happy sewing!

      Thanks for watching! Reverting to the zig-zag stitch for my jersey neckbands for the time being until I’ve got a few more under my belt. Was good giving it a shot on the overlocker but know when to scale it back to get it right. Glad I’m not the only one to have to sleep on some of my makes. Appreciate second opinions… and my husband will definitely let me know if it didn’t suit 😜

    New to your channel and just subscribed. Love the ratings as you build your skills- which you seem to be doing very quickly indeed. I have the Hope dress pattern and extension pack but still not made it- must get on with it. Totally agree with you about Style Arc pattern instructions- everything is there but they do not waste words. I go through the instructions carefully and separate each sentence with a coloured pen as they are so closely bunched together. Happy Sewing. 😊. Lynne

      Yay! Thanks for watching and subscribing! I’m quite a visual learner so understand the appeal of lots of detail and pictures available in lots of indie patterns… but sometimes clear simple instructions are just as good. I do find myself gravitating a lot to Style Arc patterns so they must be doing something right!

    Love your Angus top it looks great. In the big four patterns I always use the finished size measurements and I find that works well. Love your hope dress I’ve had the pattern ages and not made it yet but I will definitely down size as my measurements are exactly the same as yours.

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  2 місяці тому +1

      I’m normally quite good at referring to the finished garment measurements… but this dress didn’t have them on the back of the envelope… and I didn’t realise they are on the pattern pieces. I know that now… but why do they make it so difficult for newer sewists?? 🤷🏼‍♀️….. now I’m wised up and good to go for future makes. … and for sure downsize on the Hope dress if you are not one for that amount of oversized goodness ☺️

      Lovely makes! Hurray for skill building! When you “quarter” a neckline, you divide it into four EQUAL parts. The front is not to be longer than the back, and pay no account of the shoulder seams❤

    I love your hope dress. I haven't made that version but I really want to after seeing yours. I think I felt the same way about the style when I first made mine and I made it so short I don't really wear it. Definitely need to revisit. I still am terrible at putting in my neckbands. They never go in neatly. I think you've made some really pretty items. I'm looking forward to seeing how your big4 dress turns out. I hope it turns out nice. Have a lovely weekend ❤ ❤

    • @RipperSeams

      I can definitely see jersey neckbands being my arch nemesis going forward so reverting to non-overlocker insertion for the time being. I am leaning into the midi dress length more and more. I stuffed up a davenport dress earlier this year by cutting it too short after originally being too long. Still feeling the burn. 😩

    Thank you for this video re Hope dress - I’ve been looking at this dress for a while, but I do like a fitted bodice with a gathered skirt and so am thinking I might a/ size down (I prefer to work off finished measurements) and b/ add French use seam. Will let you know if this works!,

    I made the Hope dress from a quite pretty bed sheet. It fit great because I sized down, but I look like I stepped out of the 1800s. I'll still wear it at home, which was the original idea anyway, but it is quite laughable. I think I just need to put my hair up in a severe bun and wear some little gold wire rimmed glasses on the end of my nose for the look to be complete. (I am 63, so the look should be quite realistic). Maybe I could have my photo taken by our wood burning cook stove. Or is that overkill? Lol.

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes to all of that!! I love a bit of overkill occasionally. I made a Davenport dress earlier this year in yellow mustard gingham. It was originally too long and screamed Little House on the Prairie. I would not look out of place joining you for that photo by the wood burning stove! I then botched it up and cut it too short so now it looks like Little House on the Prarie goes to Coachella. So now I’m going to turn it into tea towels 😜
