Thank you for this, I enjoyed a walk down memory lane. Was watching a PBS program about museum dioramas and remembered how special they were at this museum. Loved visiting as a child in the 1960's and agree that it's a shame the museum is moving, hope they dont change a thing, especially the Streets of Old Milwaukee. So nice to know young people still enjoy it, thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed, it's such a special place and I really hope they keep the Streets of Old Milwaukee intact (along with everything else!) Thank you for watching!
Glad to find your videos of this museum. I'm worried what the new one will be like, so at least there are these videos to look at and remind me of the great immersive exhibits. I have a feeling the new one will be too small and too modern to have these grand setups.
As a "Streets of Old Milwaukee" docent, I'm happy that you've captured a good sense of Old Milwaukee in an authentic way. It will be interesting to see what of it will move to the new museum.
I grew up in Milwaukee in the 60's, moved and settled in Texas. I remember this as a 10 yr old. This past March (2024) we came back for a visit and took my granddaughter (8) here. I'm happy to report, this was ALL still there ! She LOVED everybit of it and wants to go back. I loved it too, after 60 years! The Milwaukee Public Museum is a treasure...
I lived there when they were just setting up The Sense Of Wonder exhibit. I got to watch it week by week, and even got to help (a little) with one of the glass cases. It's one with a bird on a high perch, with a very long, trailing tail hanging down. I helped "arrange" the tail. So sad the museum will be, or already has moved, and changed. Years of very fond memories were made there. That case (and bird) is pictured right around the 3:03 mark!
I'm 48 and when I was a kid we used to go on field trips to the museum. I used to daydream about being in the museum alone at night in the streets of old Milwaukee exhibit
I have SO many fond memories at this place dating back to the mid-1980s. Actually I'll be heading down there in a couple weeks for the first time in 20 years! Very excited for that! I do know the reason behind why they're relocating the museum, though. It's due to the building being severely outdated and needing about $100 million worth of repairs. Instead of forking over the money for the tremendous amounts of repairs, they're just building a new one and relocating to it. This old building will be demolished once the new one is built and operational. It'll be sad to see it go, but such is life I guess.
@@hoosiertours I’ve heard they’re downsizing the building and adding more interactive exhibits. Essentially that means they’re going the route of interactive VR-based tours through the museum. So it’s going to be more hi tech.
Thank you for this video. Soon so much of this will be gone . The Streets of Old Milwaukee along with the European Village will NOT be in the new crappy museum. Since the Streets and village are apart of the building it is said it is impossible to move this. The new museum is too small for it to be replicated from what I read. All the artifacts in the houses will be stored somewhere but who knows where ? So much of this will be gone forever.
Indeed it's a crime to kill Old Milwaukee. Bill Harley drew his first motorcycle bicycle engine while working at the pictured Pawling & Harnischfeger Company, while he and the Davidson brothers bought gasoline for their first machine at the pictured Laabs Drugstore on Vliet.
Totally agree that they shouldn’t mess with these exhibits. So many good memories of visiting as a kid, and still just as cool now.
Yeah, I'm really nervous about the move!! Thanks for watching!

Yes I'm really concerned about the new museum!
@@hoosiertours Same here I wish they would keep it how it is.
Thank you for this!!!! These are the parts of the museum that are most so special to me!
Me too, I sure hope they transfer them in original format to the new museum!
Love this! So many memories going here as a kid. Thanks for this video....and, for doing research and being educated on our wonderful classic museum.
Thank you for the kind comment!

Glad I captured the authentic essence of this wonderful exhibit, here's to hoping it survives the move!

It is indeed a treasure, so sad this will be gone! Glad you had a chance to show your granddaughter!
Excellent video. This is my favorite part of the museum.
Mine too, thank you!
Thanks for that! I grew up there and visited often in the 80s and 90s.
Yep, thanks for watching!

That's cool, glad I was able to document it. Hope your display survive the move, its a really great exhibit!

Yep I've read that since, makes sense but I just hope they can keep a lot of their great exhibits intact!

Interesting I did not know that background to Old Milwaukee, but I agree it will certainly be criminal to ruin/destroy this.
Sampson!
