I actually used this last Sunday for a surf rock gig @ a Disney Resort. EHX Slap-Back Echo - Surfy bear Spring Reverb Metal - Carl Martin Surf Trem - IR-X (EV IR) - to PA... worked unbelievably well... Had been using a Tone Master Super Reverb for this gig the past year since it needs to be silent stage. Will likely use a combination of both going forward.
Not yet. I'll probably pair with either an HX stomp or GT-1000 core and call it a day, with maybe an FS-7. I did try the main out into the stomp and put stereo chorus, delay and reverb and it was a good time. Dave's IRs are awesome.
I played live last weekend with nothing but the IR-X and a H90. Super minimalist rig and it worked beautifully. I can't imagine needing to do anything I wouldn't be able to accomplish with just these two things.
It also workes well as the Amp Sim and CAB IR for 'Amp in a box' Dirt pedals, like the SLO100 Pedal, or even a BE-OD. Marshall Blues breaker through that with the right IR was amazingly good sounding.
The cat said, "Leon! I thought we agreed that these are secret licks! You musn't show them how they are played!!!! *Jumps in front of camera to save the day....
"nothin' to see here, meow've a long", and here I thought the cat said the licks were purrrrfect. Cats are biased, they prefer modelers like fe-line 6.
That is one cool cat that you have there Leon.😉. I haven't gotten myself an IR X just yet, but it's definitely at the top of my wishlist. Thank you for showing the different rig set ups.
I'm running it in a traditional pedalboard setup with a twist. Three drive pedals in front of the IRX (Tumnus, Rattler, Imperium), then IRX into the loop of an HX Effects, out to a Volante and Flint. This allows me to control the IRX and the Volante via the HX Effects' MIDI control station and add effects in front or after the gain stage section. It is extremely versatile and sounds fantastic. I am really impressed with this pedal - gives me a great alternative to my FM9 which I also love. What a time to be a guitar player. Cheers, Leon. Thanks as always for the fantastic content!
Great video Leon. Awesome how you showed all these option. Great playing, you are blessed with the Gods Rock tone in your hands. Love your playing, if you ever come to SW Ontario, Canada I will for sure go see you and your band play. Cheers and keep Rock'n
This was great, 😂 looking like a pedal...I forgot it's really an amp head, so showing us alternative ways of running these modern units and the advantages of different routing is gold. And the cats like "pfft...I'm the real star here".
Nice video as always. I’d like to see a video either fractal Fm9 and IR-X as a preamp and amp and cab sim in 4CM! In this way you would be able to use this preamp and cab sim plus all fractal amp and cabs… I think this could be a convenient way of putting a valve into fractal gear 😅
Just got the Friedman IR X today I’m going 4 cable it with HX Stomp in a Marshall 800 Clone amp I built ! I will report back . Love your channel Leon 👍
I’ve already got 3 setups. A Marshall Jmp1, into an Alesis Quadraverb, into an pa, in stereo. #2 is a PRs MT 30 into a 4x12, with a pedal board( not a lot of pedals, but does what I want it to) , and # 3 is an eleven rack, into the other stereo channel of the pa. All 3 switchable. But!!! This sounds awesome!!! Great tips!! Thinking of getting this in place of the eleven rack. Or, a PRs Se Mcarty 594, and an PRs Se DGT! Decisions, decisions! Nice video!!
@LeonTodd, amazing tones and playing as always! One thing I've noticed that might worth pointing out: in the first set-up, the Suppa-Puss is mounted very close to the IR-X probably obstructing the cooling opening. I've checked the user manual and indeed they recomend not blocking the opening to prevent overheating. For a brief demonstration I don't see it as an issue, just poining out so other viewers have that in mind when building their own rigs.
I like this style of videos, I mean reality is a lot of us aren’t using amps, and not everyone is buying a $1800 modeler, I like this idea of affordable options, I mean if you already have pedals, adding something like this or Iridium, ACS1 etc..,
The video I've been waiting for. I received my IR-X a bit ago (ordered on release day...) and I've been debating on different ways to set it up on a pedal board. The H90 is definitely insanely powerful, but I was thinking about something a little more simple - say a CTC Sidekick Jr in the loop and then some sort of fuzz or drive in front (along with a tuner). I hadn't even thought about using the IR-X as a virtual power amp using the effects return... Something else to play with considering I have a rack of old pre-amps.
Been using FM9 for gigs. I'm going to integrate this and use the FM9 for effects for now and see how it goes. Ive been considering an H90 and it feels like the right choice. Was glad to see you post this to hear some of your sounds with the exact same setup. Cheers
Not sure if its mentioned but the power amp sim is still on when you bypass the IR, so keep that in mind if you did want to go to a power amp. You should go from the fx send to your external power amp. Granted though if you don't and it sounds good, it's good!
Interesting you're pairing it with preamps. I was thinking myself with pairing it with some Victory V4 preamps (like a Kraken V4 for instance) with the "amp-through" mode on the V4, (bypass switch) it can really makes for a real 4 channel (6 if you count both boost on the IR-X) compact solution !
I was using the IR-X with a Fryette PS2. For high gain tones I like to use the guitars volume to roll back a little and for some reason with the IR-X when I do that the notes just die. Feels like a noise gate, but there is none. I mainly use the synergy with a variety of modules and have not had this issue. I have not been able to figure it out so it is shelved for now.
How close is the IR-X preamp to the Friedman synergy preamps equivalents? I would think it's close, but interested if it's a little better or worse, other?
I just bought the Friedman IR X and waiting for it. will use it in 4 cable method with my TC G System iB mod. Great way to have an entire rig in just one pedal board. I also have the Syn 1 to hook it up. This thing can be used in so many ways ;)
Using the IR-X with a Synergy rack unit is a good reminder that the software side of the IR-X is made by Synergy. This makes me wonder if we might see more flavors of the IR-X as time goes on? A Synergy IICP version of an IR-X is a day 1 purchase for me.
Awesome video! Leon, can you do a vid with the IR-X and FM3 where the Friedman replaces an amp block? I want to go guitar into FM-3, out to IR-X, back into FM3 and IRs and then post FX.
Wait, you can route a preamp into the Friedman pedal? So you could use the Friedman with the H90 as a master rig and just route in the stuff you need? These things keep getting cooler and cooler. That's a great video. H90 and the Friedman is mindboggling. I personally would also take a Boss GE-7 before the Friedman to be able to sculpt the tone of the guitar and boost or de-boost (or if we're at it take the EQ-200 with full MIDI capability)
Exciting to learn how the IR-X breathes life into many older 4CM/Insert multi-fx units (G system and lexicon MP G2), as well as the more recent fractal and line 6 stuff
I'm currently awaiting delivery of this unit, and can't wait to try it. I'm hoping to be able to hook it up to my Helix for FX, but also use it on its own for rehearsals and so on...
Can you use a stereo delay after the irx so you can send 2 stereo signals to PA? (as in not use a delay in the loop but 'after the IR power amp simulation '
I've been running my IRX parallel into my Quad Cortex (input 1 direct and input 2 thru IRX). This alows me a ton of flexability as I use the QC midi to control a lot. Quickly change impulse resonces in QC or run the IRX IRs. Also have some rack gear (eclipse and PCM80) routed thru the effect loop of the QC. It's a blast!
I'm trying to set up my Quad Cortex to send midi program changes to my IRX but I can't get the midi program changes to function in the IRX. If I understand the IRX instructions, I should just send the midi command (hit the footswitch on the QC, midi has been set up and confirmed with MidiView) and then just hold the boost/store button, right? The IRX doesn't store the midi info though and doesn't change programs. Do you have any pointers or suggestions?
@@sixstringdavis are you using the IRX software to set the programs?…move it to the program number, set how you want it and then hit store. Then just have the QC send the program change message. I struggled to get it to work at first…the software worked easily once I figured it out. Let me know
I appreciate you taking the time, thanks! Yes, I'm using the software. I start with "Program Change 0" in the software, set it up, hit the button on the QC that sends "0" and then save. When I manually switch to any other program in the software and then hit the button on the QC for 0 nothing changes. In the QC I've chosen midi type PC, channel 1 and then the program number that corresponds with the IRX program change number... but I wasn't sure what to use for the Bank CC#0 and the Bank CC# 32, I've tried none and 1 for each, still no luck.@@curban3000
Wow.. Great examples. I loved the second example and how you could add the effects before and after the Friedman.. God that sounded so cool, and the midi really makes it easy.. Midi is such a cool thing for channel switching and turning effects on and off with just one step of a footswitch.. Love it.. Very cool sir and the H90 just goes good with anything.. Too cool.. Love it.. Thanks so much for such cool examples.. Have you checked out the Hughes and Kettner Ampman or did I forget and you already made a video of the same? Be well and be good sir! Tim
Hi @LeonTodd and followers! Aren't you using the Balanced out from IR-x when connecting with H90? Please let me know how you are connecting them. I'm struggling with it. My guess is: Guitar -> H90 In 1 H90 Out 1 -> IR-x Input H90 Out 3 -> IR-x Send IRx Return -> H90 In 3 IRx Balanced Out -> Speaker. Is that right?
I was thinking of doing something like rig 2 but with a Hotone Ampero II. I don't currently own either unit, but it seems lime it'd be a pretty cool rig for not a tonne of cash. I've got an old Randal RM4 rack and a TONNE of MTS units that would work nicely with a Hotone or The H90. Hmm. Maybe It's time to come out of guitar semi retirement. Thanks for the inspo mate!
Given the H90 does a full AD conversion, do you notive ANY change in tone/feel/dynamics compared to going direct into the IR-X and out to board from the IR-X? I mean, it sounds great.
Hi great demo of this awesome pedal Leon and I'm looking to pair it up with the OX Stomp box but just do not have clue as to how to do it, I don't use any sort of effects other than what's in the amp and maybe a pedal now and then all this tec gear scares me to death with the wiring and patches irs and all the rest I just need something simple. I sent a question about this to Dave Friedman and got this reply which I do not really understand totally quote>>> Ok so you want to power a cab.. I would suggest a Duncan Power Stage power amp.. Turn the ir’s off in the irx and come out the balanced out with a tip/ sleeve y cable, 1 side into the power amp and the other into the ox stomp.. You send ox stomp to front of house and power amp to the cab.. help me out somebody please
I bought this pedal in Aus on release day and love it. HOWEVER! It’s missing a true bypass function. I’ve got other preamps on my pedalboard I’d like to use and they don’t play nice with this - Solar Chug, and Chase Bliss Automaton II- hopefully a firmware update for a duel switch stomp in the future to add this functionality? Not sure if the current wiring will allow, but it’s defo needed.
I'm in a bit difficult situation as i like that IR pedal, but... I already set up an Hotone Ampero ii Stomp with my H90 and have a Friedman BE-OD Deluxe pedal on top for some extra sounds. All (and more pedals of course 😉) is connected to a Boss ES-8 Midi-Switcher. Only reason I see to swap my BE-OD Deluxe is the MIDI function of the IR-X. Or is there something more? Happy to here some arguments why to change. 😎
If you care about tone, dynamics or latency you would gain 3 to 7 times less latency if you use IR-X poweramp and cab sim instead of Ampero II Stomp, and a true high voltage tube tone/dynamics and feel, plus 2 more boosts and the PLEXI channel!
I already have a Fractal FM3 and Helix HX stomp... do I NEED this? What can this do for me if I really only gig with one type of modded marshall core tone and some basic reverb/delay/chorus?
So....just trying to figure out how you wired this up, Leon.....to me it looks like you go into the H90 Input 1 ----> Send Output 3 of H90 -----> input of IR-X ------> TRS output of IR-x ------> Return 3 of H90 then for your monitoring, you use Output 1 of H90 ------> FRFR or monitors? Setup the routing as either series, dual or parallel depending upon the application?
Hi @@LeonTodd ! H90 and IR-X together is fantastic. I would like to tie a wah and an NS-1x, how would you wire that up? I can't bring it together 😅Could you please tell more about the midi wiring you did there too?
Just got my irx yesterday and loving it so far. I'm running mine into my FM3 for IR's and processing. I did try using just the send of the irx into the tube pre model but I'm finding I'm having to crank the output on the Fractal. Do you have any suggestions of settings for the tube pre model?
I was wondering the same thing. If using as an insert into the h90 would you use the irx’s input and balanced out with the ir’s on then go out of the output of the h90 to front of house. I’m thinking you’d have to go to a di from the h90’s output first though. Need to try it. I’ve got the irx last in chain assuming it needs to be there to go balanced out to a pa. Using the h90 in the irx loop
@@aaronbryant1193 When using the H90 in the effects loop of the IRX, are you using the mono channel 1 input/output? Could you still use 3/4 to add extra pedals to the H90? I was thinking of getting an H90 and using it with the IRX this way.
Love your reviews and edumacation drops; and you be a monster player fer sure! Quick Q: can I plug the IRX [mono] into an H9, mono, then go stereo out into a second H9, for a stereo, “post mic,” type set up, and expect it to sound good? This would be primarily for home recording. Thanks!
Muchas gracias. Un saludo.
You can do pre only, post only or both independtly for each channel. Two little knobs on the right side will let you choose PRE level, and 2 regular knob on the left are the post level.
God when will Synergy create an update rack unit to the SYN-2. Imagine have power amp simulation, IR loader, MIDI, XLR outs and standard outs for for direct and straight to power amp, pre and post loops, digital back end, cmon Synergy please 😅
Who's using an IR-X in their rig?
I am currently using the following config:

Pirate Midi Bridge 6 to control: IR-X, H90 and Riverside

Only reason I see to swap my BE-OD Deluxe is the MIDI function of the IR-X.
Or is there something more?
Happy to here some arguments why to change. 😎
If you care about tone, dynamics or latency you would gain 3 to 7 times less latency if you use IR-X poweramp and cab sim instead of Ampero II Stomp, and a true high voltage tube tone/dynamics and feel, plus 2 more boosts and the PLEXI channel!
@@politoleo i can smell the smoke of my burned account already 😲
I already have a Fractal FM3 and Helix HX stomp... do I NEED this? What can this do for me if I really only gig with one type of modded marshall core tone and some basic reverb/delay/chorus?
Probably not!
That sounds about right!
Thx again for doing this setup! 😀@@LeonTodd
Hi @@LeonTodd ! H90 and IR-X together is fantastic. I would like to tie a wah and an NS-1x, how would you wire that up? I can't bring it together 😅Could you please tell more about the midi wiring you did there too?
Can I run it into a stereo pwr amp?
Absolutely love mine!!!
I have a digitech 2120 and I’m thinking to buy the Friedman and use the 2120 as FX unit on the fx loop, maybe it will works…
Can't see why it wouldn't
UA stomp and IR-X is a great combo
Just got my irx yesterday and loving it so far.
I'm running mine into my FM3 for IR's and processing.
I did try using just the send of the irx into the tube pre model but I'm finding I'm having to crank the output on the Fractal.
Do you have any suggestions of settings for the tube pre model?
Yeah you need to toy with the tube pre a little - I've got a video up copying settings from other blocks into it that works well!
@@LeonTodd cool- shall look forward to that.
I exported the ir's from the Friedman and imported them into the Fractal and all sounding good
Hey leon, are you able to get close to the irx with tone x pedal? I used to have a jj jr and gassing for that sound again
So for the H90 rig, were you going out of the Friedman’s balanced out with the power amp sim and IR on and then into the post fx of the H90?
Thanks!
That should work fine!
@@LeonTodd Many Thanks Sensei!
Me staring at my Friedman irx and Eventide h90 on my desk... "this could work for a micro rig."
when do you make a video about axe fx whit all the fx catagories
Have your seen this? ua-cam.com/video/EYjRBdRYjpQ/v-deo.htmlsi=U59hHRqJryMMoSgp
Muchas gracias. Un saludo.
just sold my Fractal FM9, they record nicely but live so far away from a real tube tone like the IR X
Great to hear you're enjoying the IR-X!
Quick question - is the boost pre or post drive in the IR-X?
You can do pre only, post only or both independtly for each channel. Two little knobs on the right side will let you choose PRE level, and 2 regular knob on the left are the post level.
Both. There’s a boost volume that affects the post gain volume, and there’s a boost gain that affects pre-gain tone (so it adds gain).
@@saarangnarayan123 @politoleo thanks guys, exactly what I was trying to find out.
Either or both. Amazing
Mines coming at the end of the month
You are great!
Bravo!
Fucking sweet rendition in 3:10 🎉🎉😎😎
F’n rad!!!
Lol love the cat bombs
Be honest Leon. Did you rip a few cones before this vid?
Need a Jake E Lee edition of the IR-X!
Almost forgot.. You're cat made a great appearance.. What a good looking feline!
God when will Synergy create an update rack unit to the SYN-2.
Imagine have power amp simulation, IR loader, MIDI, XLR outs and standard outs for for direct and straight to power amp, pre and post loops, digital back end, cmon Synergy please 😅
yesssss
@@LeonToddyou got some weight man if you talk to them let them hear it haha 😂
Love the content man thank you.
