I have written a PDF book telling the story of how I got into hand-feeding birds and the experiences along the way. If you want to purchase that PDF booklet it is 10 USD and can be purchased at this link:

Mr. Hairy Woodpecker will now visit inside the kitchen. For those wondering about the safety of the bird, I pull the blinds down after each feeding sessions and leave them horizontally open so the sideways lines of the blinds are clearly visible. They won't fly into the window if they see the horizontal lines of blinds. I have seen the bird demonstrate awareness of the existence of a window without the blinds closed in this way, but to be safe I will leave it as so.
Hairy Woodpeckers demonstrate awareness of individuals they trust. If someone else is around while I try to feed him at the window, he doesn't land or come in. This time of year, nesting season, is when they are the most bold. Usually they bring the young to the hand as well when they leave the nest.

The loud vehicles in the background are farming supplies being transported, common for this time of year. It just so happened they went by at the same time the Woodpecker visited. A magical moment, but a little noisy at times.

If you draw lines on the window with a sharpie, they will recognize it as an obstacle.

I love how he announces his arrival! Just like they do at my bird feeders! What a special treat to have him visit inside your house!

What an incredible level of trust. Wonderful. Where we used to live in Ontario, there were many hairy woodpeckers, and we enjoyed watching them. Here in Vancouver, I don't think there are any. We occasionally see a small downy. I miss them.

Car selfies are stupid! Public transport, walking and cycling are superior. The exclusively American obsession with driving needs to stop.

His little beeps! Loud like my budgies :D Alternative to leaving the blinds down are 'Window Alert' stickers, there are some decorative leaf style ones on Amazon that are clear but birds see them with their UV vision.

Pretty sure one of the woodpeckers I feed once yelled at me for more food right as I walked outside. I could be making false connections but I feel like it looked at me as I walked out and yelled at me one time to try to communicate its need to the food man. So dang adorable. And it just stayed perched like five feet up as I refilled the feeder

What are you feeding it, in CEntral Park, an area where we birders go, they LOS cam and eat out of our hands, peanuts, they are cautious and are gone in seconds! He surely stayed long!

    Two questions
#1 How long were you standing in that pose before the bird chimed in?
#2 Was this the first time it visited you at home?

I've been feeding him at the window for a few weeks now. If I see him through the window where I practice and do computer work I then walk over to the kitchen and open the window. Takes about 10 - 20 seconds for him to come up to the window after that.

      @@Ewandobson Thanks,
That's a nice response, very thorough, I really appreciate it!
I need to try it out, but my hand is shaking too much. Any tips regarding food?
When you did that for the first time outside, how long were you waiting with your hand deployed with food on a palm?

@@pepek69andhalf I wrote a long PDF book on it that I sell. I'm working on writing a second part to it as well. You can find it in the video description. It is extremely detailed.
