    Flair I was a geologist and worked in the geotechnical industry for a while. You can wet on the dry clay and roll it between your palms to form a "dirt worm" out of it, the longer the worm you make the better the clay you have. If it breaks easily the higher silt content you have

      I was told the same thing. I am trying to make a pond on my property in Mississippi and doing core samples in different areas to find the right location. I was wondering if adding potassium would compact the clay better. I know the farmers in the area are always liming their clay fields to break down the potassium compaction issue.

    also maybe move the dock to the other side of the beach

  • @brandonjones1826

    100% go with bentonite, if it’s ever punctured, it’s self sealing and it’s resistant to wear (fish bedding/vegetation growth/driving posts for a pier..etc). Also, if you have true glacial till, it’s not 100% clay. There is also some coarse and fine aggregates (gravel and sand) in there occasionally, and it will affect the cohesive properties of the clay (cohesion is the grain to grain electrostatic attraction that keeps the clay together/sealed). So if it’s true glacial till, your chances of having a leak are already there, whereas you’re almost guaranteed a seal with bentonite. Im a civil engineer, but I have not worked with soil since my internship in college, but I would assume that you would not need another full 8” of glacial till on top of the bentonite. I would suggest 4-6” if you’re really trying to save money. But in the end, with your big plans and all, I would for sure do it right the first time.

      I doubt you’ll see this follow-up lol but I forgot to mention, when you said “where the water goes in” (16:58) which I’m assuming is where your pump is, the rock around that needs to be fairly large sized riprap, they’re large stones and fish love it. But it will also give you some stability in your soil/slope, so that the water doesn’t carry as much of your liner material with it as it trickles down the slope. It also looks good. I haven’t dealt with soil (directly) in a while, but I deal with erosion daily. So if you want to be extra cautious, use large sized (basketball to beach ball sized) stones near your pump.

      @MaryBrownForFreedom 3 місяці тому +1

      If its like the hard pan clay I have in SW MN(glacial remains) it is a sandy clay... it will seep at first but eventually the fine particles work to the bottom and create a seal... stuff is a pain in the a** to dig thru! I put in a base for a ham radio tower last year and a mini excavator couldn't punch thru it. I had to use a demolition hammer to break it up and shovel it out by hand.

  • @Something-Somes
    @Something-Somes 3 місяці тому +98

    @FLAIR Go all in. You already pulled the trigger on the clay so you have to at least get the bentonite layer. You also want to have thicker layers in areas you might put heavy structures because the structures will sink over time. You also need some type of system to prevent erosion when filling. Do it right man...I know its expensive but hopefully the content it creates will allow it to pay for itself over time.
    I would start trying to set traps for critters that might ruin your day as well. You want to make sure no mink are using your drain/run off pipes. If you are confident there are no critters in your drainage than you may want to consider adding grates or something to cover the entry of said pipes.
    As for structures for the pond, some stuff I have done over the years: Cement cinder block hotels covered in some gravel, Xmas trees of course, large dead trees, wooden pallets, stone aquascaping
    Common structures people use but are not really the best: DIY plastic pipe trees, non metal drainage pipes, plastic milk crates
    Structures I suggest to NOT use would be anything metal because of bentonite charging. There is a science that happens with metal and bentonite clay that can attract lightning and electrical current. A little metal is ok but the old car idea I would not go with...not just for the metal too but because of chemicals like oil and gas residues. There are also laws for certain types of structures in water bodies...like rebar for example...so do a little research.
    I like using cinder block because mosses and algae will start growing on it over time and it looks better if you have it in clearer waters. It also can double as an anchor or tie up for fountains/diffusers and other possible structures. Like I said though...you want to figure out where heavy structures will be to lay a bit extra layering of clay because of sinking over time. I have used plastics in ponds but I try not to because of chemicals that release from it over time...sometimes its just cheaper to use and I get it.

      @@ridiculousrolling I am not an educated pro but I do have experience. Just because I offer my advice does not mean he has to take the advice.
      A project like this is a big investment and it can also be a money sink regardless of however it is done.
      I use to work on exotic animal enclosures and have done small to large ponds and even a lake once. Learned from many mistakes myself.
      If I was him I would have also put in a few culvert systems for run off. Erosion can be a problem later on but sometimes its a process and you have to let nature figure it out for you.

    My grandfather made his own pond back in the day. He used hogs to pack the dirt. LOL, but now they have spreaders to do that for you. He had his pump near the middle of the pond. That the damn on the same side you are planning. He also had shallow areas for spawning on the North side and South West side. Then, he had his dock on the West side. Then added pine trees near the spawning areas. We live in NC so that was the tree to use. But he did it right the first time, so i encourage you to do it right the first time. That way, you and family and friends can enjoy it for ever. I can still remember all the precious memories fishing with my grandparents and family members. ❤

    Honestly you have such big plans for the pond and with it being such a big project I feel that biting the bullet and making the sandwich is the way to go. You can have the peace of mind knowing it’s absolutely done and in 6 months it won’t be leaking. Time is so valuable and I feel like if you just sent it now and in 6 months it starts leaking and you have to invest a bunch more time into it to try and fix it your gonna wish you just full sent the first time around.

    One critical thing to remember is to make sure that you set up your water input so that it will not erode your bank. The way you did it last time caused a lot of erosion and will wash away the good work and waste your money. Think this one through to find a good solution. Bama Bass has his water rising up from the deep part of his pond. Maybe run hose down to the deepest part with some kind of diffuser, at least until the water fills up over your south ledge. Those are my thoughts, but I'm not a pond expert (yet). Seek professional opinions regarding this. We want this to be a success for you! 🙂

    • @p_campbell
      @p_campbell 3 місяці тому +7

      A diffuser will help alot , something like a spray up into the air instead of on the ground, and moving, so it isn't hitting the same spot. At least untill you have a foot of waters

  • @pauljohnson5615
    @pauljohnson5615 3 місяці тому +42

    If you watch bama bass videos, I believe he used a dye and tracked down his leaks and layered the bentonite in the water to plug his leaks. I feel you could do it either way and it is just more reinsurance that it wouldnt leak if you do bentinite and another layer. For structure parts, i would use old concrete pipe if you have a company around making it. Saves you on trying to secure things down and risk puncturing the bentonite layer.

    If your goal is to heat up the north end (and the water is clear/semi-clear) you should sprinkle rock, boulders, and bigger logs around that area. Rock and logs will retain their heat from the sun longer than the dirt and mud. In the deeper water adjacent to that shallow flat may be a good place to put more branches and fish cribs for the minnows and young to live in/hide out. I would also introduce local natural weeds to the south end where you are keeping it cooler to provide more cover, shade, and fresh oxygen in the summer. I do not know what is local to your area regarding bullrushes, cattails, or other emergent vegetation but those types of plants may go well next to your beach since they should not spread into the sand. (Plus it may attract waterfowl and give you a place to hide a blind)

I would like to see a super brushy area to jig perch, bluegill, crappie, etc. You know Banjo would dig that little area as well. Another cool addition would be some caves for big kitty cats and bass to hide in. Use something like a culvert and pack clay and rocks all over it. Not sure how it would work in the real world but could be super cool.

    On top of bentonite and clay, you should also keep the pigs in the "unfilled" pond for a few months to compact the ground. If you want to fish- make sure there are plenty of bushes and trees around the pond and plenty of water plants (variety and plants which sit at different depths is important) and plenty of good sized rocks in the pond in order to maximise your fish population. Fish need places to hide and consistent water temperature and these all combine to ensure that your water temperature is stable by providing plenty of dappled shade and protect the water from algae bloom. Overly warm water temperature will also affect the fertility of your fish. The greenery in and around the pond also keeps the banks stable, protect your land from flooding and also protect the pond from nutrients seeping into the water from the surrounding areas - which is a huge concern when you keep animals on the land and believe me when I am tell you that nutrients can seep into the pond from over 15 metres away even if you have a line of trees between the water and source of fertilization. You can get additional benefits from this, by planting fruit bearing species which will benefit from absorbing those nutrients. Also in terms of structure, it is worth building creating a nursery area/ several nursery areas- so you would have the spawning area, with a nursery area with a barrier of rocks and reeds protecting it, so that after hatching, baby fish have an area to escape to where the larger fish cannot access.

    I remember a saying about how there is never enough time to do it right, but there is always enough time to do it over. Dude, You have the chance, and your pond is in an area where the soil is like a sieve. Bama Bass has soil conditions that are way better, so he really didn't have to do as much. If you don't want to add the layer of bentonite and additional layer of clay, sell this place, move somewhere where the soil is clay heavy, and be done with it. Otherwise my guy, just suck it up and do it right with the bentonite and second layer of clay while you got the chance. By summer, you'll be stocking a solid pond with fish. Just my $.02.

    To test, chop the clay up in a wheel barrel with a shovel ,add water & hoe until it's like cement. Now let it dry until like thick putty & make a bowl with a 1" thick wall & place it in a hole dug in the ground. Measure how much water fills it. Cover to stop evaporation & wait 24 hrs. Now check & measure how much water remains. Compute how much water leaked & was lost. Now divide that by 12 to estimate what 12" thick clay would leak.

      You're manipulating the clay before the test. It's not the same as dumping loads and running over it with a bulldozer. There's going to be cracks all in the clay as it sets now. Did you see the giant clod Banjo came up with? You could get a better seal running over it with rollers mashing everything together.
      But the bentonite will fill in the cracks and make a seal.

      @@p_campbellyes & no. All clay perks some,some (usually sand content) leaks or perks alot more. The added wieght compresses it much more than atmospheric pressure & it leaks or perks less than it would at atmospheric pressure. The testing should have been done before installation to see if it was good enough & how much to use. The test is just to see if its worthless. Some clay is near worthless,others like I have around me won't let leach fields work or let water get into the well as I have here with swamp less than 100 feet away on 3 sides. At 52 feet deep surrounded by swamp & standing year round water this 6" dia well will only let in 60 gallons per 24 hours. Thats why there is standing water. At 52 feet, a vacant hole, the clay & water are both under great pressure. The water has no choice but to be forced to that hole or well. Nope, ain't happening there are 3 wells here & they are all the same because that compressed clay won't give. Well driller told me it's a waste of time & money,wait for city water, not to mention the water sucks!

    I’ve seen it to many times where friends have tried to go the cheap route and it more often than not blows up in their face and they end up spending more to fix it right. In this case, water has weight and will be pushing on your base so it could leak. In previous videos you mentioned that your water pumping volume is minimal so if you have a leak and you can’t pump water in enough to keep a consistent height you’ll be back to fixing it.
    If you have the budget to do it with all the layers now I would, that way you can move forward with all the dock/tackle shop plans asap worry free.
    Just my two cents.
