The Chrysler Airflow Eight 2 Door Coupe was definitely ahead of its time. It's well ventilated to keep that flathead inline 8- cylinder engine nice and cool. I didn't realize that these cars are so rare. For a pre-World War II car, it's got nice styling inside and out. Great find as usual, Lou!

Remarkable airflow is pristine condition, I've never seen an 8 coupe and I collect early Chrysler's. I like the Air Stream style better myself - but would jump at this beauty - the engineering in these is decades in advance of the mid 30's. Chrysler was competing with itself with 2 cars in the same niche. Nice to see one of my neighbors owns it.

The Chrysler Airflow was one the early examples of Streamlining in automotive design and was in the same spirit as the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad’s (CB&Q), Pioneer Zephyr trainset and the Pennsylvania Railroad’s GG1 electric locomotive. Streaming design concepts reflected the emerging aviation manufacturing industry. The 1933 Pierce-Arrow, Silver Arrow was another early example, albeit with very few being produced. Lou, another super production!

I could sit inside and just admire that dash and steering wheel all day. Chrysler engineering was always very innovative back in the day and unfortunately the Airflow was too advanced for the times. This may be the reason why ChryCo stuck with a more conservative approach to design until the Vergil Exner era in the late 1950's.

Porsche was definitely aware of the Airflow when he designed the beetle, he made 2 trips to the US in the thirties to study the latest car designs and mass production methods. The beetle closely resembles a rear engined experimental car made by Briggs for Ford, that evolved into the Lincoln Zephyr.

You question the speed of the Airflow, that was its strong suit with its streamlined shape and powerful straight eight motor. Harry Haartz set a series of records at Bonneville with an Imperial Airflow coupe like the one in this video, including a flying mile at 97.5 MPH and 2000 miles at an average speed of 75.7. The same car then drove across country racking up 18.1 miles per gallon at normal hiway speeds.
This was sensational performance for 1934 when most cars struggled to top 70 and typical hiway speeds were 30 to 40 MPH.

Hi, Lou! Well, looks like we're riding on air today! Cars built before the 1930s somehow all look alike to me. The Airflow came out at a time when cars were just beginning to look more streamlined. It's so amazing how these cars were not too popular, yet they were so influential in changing automobile design forever. I've seen that "off the cliff" video you were talking about, and I've also read that Chrysler earlier in the decade demonstrated its toughness by having a full-grown elephant stand on the roof! It came out completely intact! The Airflow continued for 1937, but only as an Imperial, and then it was gone. Because of its failure, Chrysler didn't dare trying anything too daring or risky again (perhaps the 1941-42 Town & Country station wagon was the closest thing to an exception) until Virgil Exner and the "Forward Look" in 1955.
I can well imagine Larry's utter satisfaction at finding something as rare as this Airflow coupe. Many thanks to both of you for sharing this fascinating and educational car and story!

You'd be wrong thinking that all cars looked the same before the streamlined era. I'd argue they looked more similar by 1939, than 1930. And at least every year the body had a change (compare 1920 to 1930 then compare 2010 to 2020). And don't be mistaken, automobiles were quite modern in 1920, with this exceptional look to them, and of course...massive massive vehicles, I mean bus territory.

It's a myth that the Airflow was not a success. It was a premium priced model significantly more expensive than the conventional Airstream, and Chrysler was an upper medium priced to high priced car to begin with. The Airflow sold well for an avante garde, premium priced luxury car in those depression days.
Technically, every car made after the Airflow was a copy of the Airflow with chubbier fenders. Compare the typical 1933 car silhouette with the 1934 - 37 Airflow, then compare any 1938 - 48 car and you will see what I mean.

That is one nice looking car. I’ve always liked the styling of them. The color on this one is perfect. First time I’ve seen the interior of one. The interior of this one is gorgeous. I have seen the commercial that y’all mentioned it’s so unbelievable. New cars today wouldn’t survive it. I would take this car over any of those high end sports cars in the video any day.

The Airflow was a special premium priced model, not only an avante garde design but more expensive than the Airstream line. And, Chrysler was an expensive make to start with, selling in the upper medium price brackets. No wonder they did not sell in large numbers during those depression days.
If you compare the typical 1933 car (pre Airflow) to the 1934 - 37 Airflow, to the typical 1938 and later car you will see that every car that came after the Airflow, was a copy of the Airflow silhouette with chubbier fenders.

Sounds like your battery cables are too small. 6 volt starters draw twice the amps as 12 volt starters, and when you double the amps, you square the resistance. You need at least 1 gauge battery cables. 4 gauge just doesn't work. It just doesn't.
