      @@MunroLive 7:03 it's definitely picking the left lane because you're going through the roundabout like stated in the video and the reason why it does this is because if there's traffic trying to enter the roundabout they can enter from the far right lane and you're not obstructing their entrance point... its actually quite nice.

    Tesla states on their website, "Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capability are intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment. While these features are designed to become more capable over time, the currently enabled features do not make the vehicle autonomous." That's why Sue's hands are on the steering wheel, so she can safely intervene if needed.

Tesla FSD is year ahead!!

    • @wylieecoyote
      @wylieecoyote 8 місяців тому +14

      Having your hands on the wheel can interfere with movement of the wheel and accidentally override FSD turning it off. That would lead to the driver thinking it was engaged and it just going straight ahead. The driver should have their hand next to, but not holding the wheel.
      Comments show she is a nervous driver with FSD. The car behaved perfectly and followed the law, even at the point she believed was a "mishap". The car waited until the lane was big enough for the car to fit before changing lanes. It will always err on the side of caution.
      Humans are not perfect, nor are FSD systems. There will always be unexpected events. Achieving more miles between accidents than human drivers is the proper metric for determining success, which Tesla has far exceeded (more than 10x's). We cannot let an occasional accident derail these achievements.

    Your drive is similar to my experience. FSD 13.6 has some issues but the biggest issue is the maps not the technolgy, i.e. it does not always know here it has to go. The other days I drove ove 60 miles on a poor quality seconday road with lots going on. The mapping parts was simple and I didn't need to intervene once. This app rocks but will need work to be used without a driver.

    excellent video and matches my 12.3.6 experience. I've driven hundreds of miles under it and rarely intervene (and when I do, it usually because it's in a turn only lane and doesn't realize it yet).

    Most people think that you need to periodically put pressure on, or jiggle, the wheel while you’re in FSD or auto pilot. However, another option is to move the right scroll (speed control) wheel up or down a notch. This has little noticeable effect on the driving, but resets the attention timer. I prefer this approach because the car won’t think that you are trying to take over like it does if you push too hard on the wheel.

Acceleration and lane changing was great. It even turned right on red when the cross traffic had a protected left turn. I was amazed as in navigated a toll booth. I've been using FSD 12.3.6 on every drive and I rarely have to intervene. That said there are occasional unexpected actions. I find shadows from trees in city driving sometimes make it think there's a speed bump so it can slow down for no reason. Also map guidance isn't always in sync with chosen route. In very complicated highway exchanges I have to watch that it gets into the correct lane. 95% of the time it's fine. We're 5 drivers and even my wife uses it on every highway drive.

    Thanks for doing this video. It would be clearer that FSD is doing the steering if you could avoid gripping the steering wheel and let the wheel slip through your hands. Maybe even drive with one hand lower on the wheel and just pinch the wheel with your thumb and forefinger and let the wheel slip through. Give it a little tug every so often and let us know that's what you just did, or just drag on the wheel when it turns (but don't move your hand).
    Not a big deal, but it's not obvious that FSD is doing the steering when both your hands are on the wheel and your hands turn with the wheel.
    BTW- I've found that with 12.3.6, on some roads, as long as I keep looking at the road, even with sunglasses, I can drive a long time without being nagged. I recently drove about 5 miles on a twisty mountain road without ever touching the wheel!

    Just wondering if this is a big benefit for older and less confident drivers? When you get older your reflexes and vision (especially at night) degrade. "FSD (supervised)" will need competent, fit, aware supervisors, ready to react at any time, so with very good reflexes. And there is a new type of experience required: the experience, when FSD supervised will likely perform well and when it likely will not. Like Sue at the sharp left turn, where she anticipates the bad performance of FSD supervised. I do not know, why she still let's the car get in the wrong lane, but obviously she rather acts as a car test driver there, not as a truly responsible driver. FMPOV, she should have intervened there earlier. Her supervision is better at the construction zone on the highway: she does not trust it and takes over early, indicating right, forcing a reaction of the car. And glad she did: the manual explicitly says that FSD is not yet designed to handle constructions sites.
      People that want to get rid of the supervision task for a lack of driving abilities: wait for real Level 4 or 5 systems on the SAE J3016 level system.

    • @AmpdLSU
      @AmpdLSU 8 місяців тому +1

      For the goal of ‘Full Self-Driving (Supervised),’ the focus should be on the ability to travel from point A to B without intervention, accidents, or unpredictable behaviors. As long as self-driving cars share the roads with human drivers, the appropriate metric for success should emphasize high-quality roadmanship. This involves ensuring smooth and efficient traffic flow through mutual understanding, patience, and consideration among drivers, especially in challenging situations not explicitly covered by traffic laws, which occur frequently in high congestion, construction-laden, and accident-prone routes. While this metric is tougher to quantify, it would encompass miles driven without accidents, along with the other variables previously mentioned.
      Critiquing these scenarios is important and appropriate for this video, which focuses on the overall progression of the capabilities of FSD. As @MooseOnEarth mentioned, the goal is to achieve level 5 automation, hopefully within this decade. Interventions provide valuable training data that is used to evolve the system.
      The NHTSA website does an excellent job of describing the challenges and goals that have been set, including the benefits of each successive level. They also provide a FAQ section that explicitly answers questions about how automation can aid elderly drivers.

    I did the recent 30-day fsd trial, and, for the most part, I was very impressed; however, since I don’t live in a major metro area where you may need aggressive acceleration for merging in traffic, I would have preferred an option to slow down sooner at an intersection as well as not rocketing to speed with little or no traffic. If I need to slow or accelerate quickly, I’d like the option to use the brake or accelerator as needed. That said, there were so many amazing things that it did, I can now understand Tesla’s vision based system may be the best to really achieve autonomous driving in the future.

    Thanks, Sue, for providing a no-hype review by someone who has read the user manual and is not a super-fan or hyper-critic looking for clicks. My experience since 2019 has been that it was always more relaxing to let the car help drive on long freeway trips, and each update reduced the number of hyper-safe glitches - such as abruptly slowing down once in a while.
    I live in a major city with both aggressive and timid drivers, so it was less stressful not to use FSD locally until Version 12. That transition provided much more human-like driving, including recognizing and slowing down appropriately for speed bumps, smoother roundabouts, and the bias away from large trucks and any vehicle riding the lane line or bouncing from one line to the other. Not perfect in all weird circumstances, so I too supervise vigilantly.

    I grew up in a Boston suburb. While your demo drive did involve some challenging geometry such as the University Drive crossover and a few roundabouts, I'd like to see how it would handle rush hour traffic and/or New England's tighter, less well marked roads.

    I actually have to intervene a few times each drive, mostly due to rude/impatient/bad drivers & unclear/lack of road markings that confuse FSD when there are no other cars to follow. Oh, it also doesn't see the black gate into my community at night, but sees it fine during day. I need to get my Tesla some night driving glasses.

    • @MooseOnEarth
      @MooseOnEarth 8 місяців тому +1

      The "night driving glasses" would be radar sensors, here: a front radar. But Elon refuses to spend money on it, even disabled the existing radar sensor in older cars, and also refuses to have an extended sensor suite as optional equipment that a customer could choose. It is already predictable that FSD performance at night or in rain will be much worse. The newer Model S and X have newer "4D" high-res radar, but it is unclear, whether this sensor is already used. Model 3+Y did not receive it yet.

It also takes me on side street to my home, which is slower and more dangerous than the primary road. And, on a round about, it swings to the right, confusing other drivers. Thank you for posting. I was an Elon/Tesla fan boy for more than 3-years. Paid $10,000 (on my $70k YP) because I'm an OLD IT guy (BS-Computer Science; MSEE-Digital Systems) and I was of the opinion that I should help pay for development. Now I'd join a class action lawsuit to get my $10k back...and I'd then pay $99/mo when FSD-Unsupervised finally landed. I tested software for a system that controlled nuclear weapons, so I have an understanding of when software is "good enough" -- and, yes, I understand enough about neural networks AI to know how rapidly they CAN improve. I used FSD-whatever in 2021 and 2022 to do CA-NJ-CA road trips. In 2023 to do a collection of national parks. Never really trusted it unless on Interstates...and even then, the lane changes were often downright DUMB and disruptive. I took the latest version out this week between Ventura and SanFran, ordered FSD to drive often and I hate to report that it was not good. Would have even caused an accident had I not braked hard at an intersection. This software is a LONG WAY before I would trust my own or my family's well-being using FSD.

    Couple round-abouts to test v12.3.6? Nothing exciting there, the FSD is flawless in every round-about scenario I've thrown at it.
    But FSD 12.3.6 is far from flawless in my region of northern New England with endless paved and dirt roads containing blind corners, hill round-overs, short horizon lines, close roadside trees/brush/boulders, and endless dirt mountain roads with endless edge cases. Yeah, FSD still requires many interventions in a 10 mile trip to stay away from the soft, gravelly shoulders of dirt roads, and maintain a course of travel more towards center of dirt road, rather than edge of dirt road near shoulder. Much safer in center, move aside when encountering (rare) opposing traffic, then move back to center of road.

    8:00 FSD 12.3.6 does not find parking at the destination. That is an anticipated feature that is in testing so perhaps in the next release we might see that. For now, as you saw once the brake pedal was pressed it did disengage FSD and immediately present parking options before you put it in reverse. Same at the end of the video, as soon as steering override disengaged it showed parking options.
    I have noticed on previous versions that it only turned to the nearest lane but with the current version it does sometimes turn directly into other lanes when possible so that is getting better.

    FSD 12.3.6 is a mixed bag for me. I have to say my driving environment is more crowded than the road condition on this video (and I'm not talking about rush hours, certainly not after midnight too).
    What annoys me, is that right out of my house, After left turn, there is a 600feet away intersection, I need to turn right, but the car always picks up the left lane, and move to right one quite late, the right late splits into 2 lanes, by the time the car changed away from left lane, it realized the new split out right turn lane has passed dotted into a solid line, after a jerk (yes it always jerks) , it then refuse to cross the now solid line, and misses the right turn.
    Often, lane changing is fine, but sometimes the car is irrational, e,g,, when the next lane car is so far behind, the car does nothing, upon the car approaching from behind, it decides to change lane as if trying to do cut it off, then realized is too dangerous, after back and forth jerking -- which is unsafe on freeway with high speed , it cancels lane chaning, pissing off drivers for both cars behind on the 2 lanes.
    So far, using FSD, I'm like driving school teacher.

    The people who claim to have seen people sleeping in their Tesla on the freeway, or reading the newspaper have never actually driven a Tesla.

If they can't do it in a year or make profit on it right away they are not interested. Only Elon is trying to take this on and make the "impossible" real.
      Do I like all his politics or some of his temper tantrums? Not at all, but to all accounts Frank Lloyd Wright was also an absolute prima dona jerk.... and yet look at what he built. _Why are you always holding the steering wheel?_
      As noted in the pinned comment, this is what Tesla says you *should* do, although few actually do so. By the way, lest you think she, and not FSD, is actually driving, look at the path prediction line that extends ahead of the car when it's in motion. If it's blue, FSD is in control; and it's blue for almost the entire drive.

      @@BigBen621 What im talking about is when you are driving on a single-lane road that splits into 2 lanes, rather than staying in the right lane regardless of the traffic, it'll go to the left lane. Or when you're driving on the highway and you overtake a slower car in the right lane, the car will change lanes as usual, but it wont put you back in the right lane. I understand that I can force a lane change. I also understand that if a car wants to overtake you and you're in the left lane, the car will change to the right lane. I know i'm nitpicking, but I don't like to speed and I wish they could address it.

      @BigBen621 8 місяців тому

      @@Bueno226 OK, I see where you're coming from, and I don't think you're being nitpicking. But the best way to bring about change is to disengage when it stays in the left lane, report the reason, and then re-engage and force the lane change with the turn signal. If you just put up with it, it's much less likely to get corrected.
