The initial accusation started with a Facebook post to a private Springfield, Ohio group by a resident named Erika Lee. This post was then screenshotted by a twitter user named @buckeyegirrl. This was then picked up by a Twitter account “EndWokeness” (more in him here: • Who is End Wokeness? ). The accusation was later amplified by Ohio senator and Vice Presidential Candidate JD Vance. It is possible that during debate prep, one of former President Trump’s aids gave him incorrect information about Springfield.
Pet abduction doesn’t seem to be happening in Springfield and Haitian culture does not view dogs and cats as food.

Ryan I live in Springfield,Ohio. These statements have turned this small town upside down. There is no one eating pets in Springfield. There are some real issues with the amount of immigrants that have come in. A lot of strain on resources. We need help not ridicule, we need to come together not be divided. Pray for our city. -The woman with mental problems eating a cat in that bodycam video (not from Springfield) is American by all the reports I found.

The most ridiculous detail that I've heard attached to this tale is that the friend of the daughter of the relative of the neighbor supposedly saw her missing pet strung up in a tree next door and being butchered. I know hunters hang deer in trees to field dress them, but that's a really stupid way to butcher something the size of a cat.

Had feline in my mouth before, damned cat actually stepped in my loudly snoring mouth. Why and how mystified us both, both of us equally grossed out. Me, got litterbox du foot, cat got a mouth full of saliva, so we were tied on that debacle. To add onto the craziness... The person video taped eating a cat was an American. Did anyone go "Oh those Americans are eating pets cause this one ate one!" No. They just quietly shifted to "well ok but Haitians are still bad." In 1973, I heard the same "eating dogs" rumors in Vietnamese resettlement cities in North Carolina. The rumors added that ovens in rental apartments were being ruined due to immigrants baking the stolen pet dogs whole without using roasting pans. I hope the Haitian immigrants are not harmed and understand screwed up pet lies started a long time ago.

I had a bunch of Vietnamese and Cambodian friends in grade school in north Florida They came for the shrimping industry. There was definitely friction, my father owned a shrimp boat and it was hard competing with three families living on each boat and running them around the clock. No ones pets were eaten that I know of though.

I saw some crazy stuff in Haiti when I went to help out right after the earthquake. I didn't see anyone eating dogs, but I did see a dog eating someone.
There are probably people eating anything they can get their hands on there currently due to the collapse of society thats happening, anyway, if you got out of there, given a job, why would you try hunting a dog instead of just buying a burger?

Now there are legit complaints about that many immigrants being dumped on a relatively small community, but the consumption of cats and dogs is not one of them.

Regardless, Residents of Springfield don’t approve of 20,000 immigrants moving in their small town without their consent. They went to Springfield Ohio voluntarily because there were jobs there that they could do with their limited English and limited American style education. Those kind of things happen normally like Italians and Irish going to New York. Initially, both Italians and Irish, the Polish too were ostracized and considered essentially vermin to the established citizens of New York. This is nothing new. It just is change. If you can’t handle change, I don’t know what to tell you because change is the only constant in the universe.

I think the most shocking thing about all this is the fact that someone running to be Commander in Chief would be so undisciplined as to repeat something so broad strokes and unverifiable in a presidential debate. As a Republican I am equally as disgusted that it seems that most on the right are more outraged by Kamala's response and facial expressions than the fact that Trump was so undisciplined as to say something like this.

If you see enough people to fill a stadium march across the border every other month, hear stories from Haiti about cannibalism several months ago, and see a video of a woman eating a cat raw, hear 20k of them are in that town, and might have heard about all of the car crashes, it's easy to see why they'd be more upset about her reaction.
It's also not undisciplined given the made up stuff she kept saying despite widely spread proof to the counter

There is no evidence or even strong indication of this.
Also, the geese aren't pets, they are protected wildlife that congregate on park land.
Like all living things, they die, and park maintenance workers pick up the corpses so they don't rot and stink up the parks.
If you see someone carrying dead geese in a park, that's likely what they're doing.

No, you can’t, because it’s always “my great-uncles second cousins neighbors kids best friends teachers barista heard from her coworkers talking chihuahua that…” We live in an age where everyone is carrying an always-connected video camera in their pocket and this is supposedly a happening all over, yet somehow there’s zero credible evidence. ZERO.
The logic of "if you have a 3rd of the population being Haitian, then a 3rd of the crime is by them" makes a lot of sense. However, the data describes a different story.
Instead of a 3rd of the crime, they are actually committing a lot less crime, per capita, than the other residents. And this makes sense.
If you are from another country on a protection visa, you are generally going to be very grateful and be on your best behaviour so that you don't lose your protection status and get deported back to the country you fled due to safety concerns.
So yes, there are crimes being committed by Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. However, it is at much smaller levels than the local population.

My understanding is that a substantial amount of crime isn’t being reported because the current administration made it optional for districts to report their crime statistics. I’m not saying that is what’s going on in Springfield or with the Haitians. I think you make a very good argument with them being grateful that they’re allowed to be here. I think Haitians have a legitimate claim to asylum. I don’t believe putting 20,000 of them in a town of 60k is a good way to deal with that. But maybe if we regulated illegal immigration better then we wouldn’t be forced into a bad situation in Springfield. But yeah I mean if the crime increases by 15% or whatever because of migrants then does it really matter to the actual citizens if they’re committing crimes at a lower rate to regular citizens? It’s still 15% more crime than if they weren’t there at all. For them the population has increased by 25% straining their local resources and then the crime increased by 15% (I guess) and I’m sure most of Springfield is white so that 15% of extra crime is going to stick out a lot more than it would if it were English speaking whites who moved in Springfield.

I had my first Haitian food about 15 years ago, in Louisville, KY. The lady running it had rented a place that was run down, and I was hesitant at first. It had passed health inspection, though. I looked around very carefully, and realized the place was being kept clean, and just in case I only ordered hot food. It was in a very poor section of town.
She had a tomato based soup, I recall it having been beef knuckle based, I'm thinking Joumou. It was delicious, and a trifle spicy. I then ordered a pork and rice dish, and it was SPICEY. Good, but my tongue was a little bit numb by the end of it.
Sadly I only ended up eating there once, because I was in the next county on the opposite side of Louisville, and I had just happened to be nearby. I knew my then wife would not have liked much of the food. She doesn't eat red meat, and doesn't like things that are very spicy. She speaks French, and I would have liked to have had her there to simply translate some of the menu when it didn't use the smattering of French I have picked up. I wish they had stayed in business. It was delicious food.
BTW my family is primarily Ieish and German. The Irish ate corned beef because it was considered a very inferior cut of meat, and the British didn't always process it for shipping to England. If you want to see creative use of organ meat, find yourself an old style German (or Amish) butcher who makes all the more forgotten German sausages, like brain or blood sausages. Even as a kid, while I loved most of the German sausages, those were two I could never bring myself to try.
I remember watching an old documentary on Haiti where a small segment showed that Haitians love their pets so much that they'd rather make a dirt soil and flour cookie instead of eating a cat or a dog. They literally make dirt cookies so they can keep their dog or cat alive.

I'm totally sympathetic to all humans, including Haitian immigrants, but to act like many of them aren't problematic is denial of reality. I lived around them in Key West. They cause of a lot of traffic accidents and they're often loud and boisterous and imposing to a degree that is not normal for US culture. I don't dislike them at all, but what I've said is true of the Haitians I've been neighbors with. Of course, people exist on a spectrum but there is an undeniable difference in culture that easily leads to problems.

I think the problem isn’t necessarily the fact that it’s Haitian immigrants moving into Springfield, it’s the fact that there hasn’t been adequate enough infrastructure and logistics put in place to account for such a rapid increase in the town’s population. The government seriously needs to invest in more affordable housing and address other economic concerns. At the end of the day it’s always about socioeconomics and not about race, even if demographics are involved.

Haitian immigrants who stayed in Mexico (voluntarily or not) ended up becoming part of the community in border town areas. You can see Tijuana and Rosarito has many Haitians working side by side with Mexicans and even aclimating to the environment nicely. Most people there welcomed them because they are hard working folks. I always challenge racially charged rhetoric because people dont like to research anything past headlines and 30 second shorts on social media. Ryan, thanks for taking the time to make this information accessible to everyone. Your hard work is very much appreciated.

Not wanting Haitians to flood a town in Ohio is no more "racist" than Texans saying they don't want Californians moving to Texas. It has literally nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with what they made of their own country. Californians vote for policies that make California worse for them, then flee to Texas where they continue to vote the same way. The same exact concept is at play here. You can only blame the "Californian government" so much when you had some role in getting them in power.
You may disagree with those Texans, but you'd never call them "racist" for saying they don't want "Californians." But since Haitians are black, you choose to pull the unfounded race card. You may disagree with the people criticizing the Haitian mass migration, but it is incredibly disingenuous to resort to calling them "racist." Ironically, too, you are contributing to the erasure of that word's meaning. People are not going to fear being called "racist" if they are called in any time they criticize a people that happen to be black.

There are many Haitians in Montreal, and if anything, they aren't eating enough cats. The SPCA is bursting at the seams with abandoned cats, and bird populations are getting decimated by outdoor cats.

I remember when the same accusations were made against Thai, Vietnamese, and Cambodian immigrants here in Portland, Oregon 20 or so years ago. Ryan makes good points. It is possible that it did happen , but not commonly.

I grew up part-time in a Haitian neighborhood in South Florida. Over the course of 20 years, the neighborhood started with all these types of minor problems. But now all those kids grew up. The neighborhood is a decent blue collar neighborhood again with little to no crime. The "hood" is no longer a rough place to raise kids and an ideal one to do so.
I would like to add. Haitians only practice voodoo when times are bad. They are also human beings, just like the rest of the world. They are not stupid. It is a sign of poverty everywhere to eat dogs and cats. No reasonable human being wants to do this, even Haitians. But if you ever have a doubt, just listen to one of my favorite songs. "Alan Cave Se Pa Pou Dat" translated to "until the end of time."
They eat dogs in Vietnam and China this very day. They have dog farms.

What really annoys me is people claiming that Haitians are eating ducks and their "proof" is just a picture of a Black man walking while holding a dead goose. First of all, eating geese/ducks isn't illegal or unusual-I do it every year when they're in season and make a great Thai goose stew every year. Second, why assume that just because the person is Black, he's Haitian, or that he even planned to eat the goose? Why are we turning something as normal as eating geese into a political issue?

The UK has a horse meat taboo, but large chunks of Europe does not. I had horse meat sandwiches in school because it was cheap.
On a side note, as a cat lover: I have realized that it is unethical to own a cat and just unleash it on the world where it can eat birds and animals on neighboring properties. Keeping them indoors seems cruel to their inner wild cat. Therefore I DON'T own a cat. I love cats, but also birds and lizards and all other animals that belong in an ecosystem. Perhaps a cat or two disappears because of property owning citizens sick of having the destructive animal unleashed upon them. It is very doubtful someone so easily deported or imprisoned would do such a thing in any numbers.
