I love the ending. I could never do any kind of modern job or be in an office. I don’t really want to be an entrepreneur either... I just don’t really want to sell people things they don’t need or what I don’t care about. Being self sufficient just sounds like the answer. Growing food and eating it, rather than work for a company you don’t particularly respect to eat.
Fact, you're right. We are not really made to live that way, lying, stealing, sucking and at the same time fitting into moulds of when to sleep, what to wear, when to work which really isn't healthy. Picket fence "this is what you should do to be normal" stuff. I am breaking out of that, but seeing the state politics/work/fear mongering is putting us in, I hope we can get out of that environment in time. On our farm we still work, we work hard, but the wins (and failures) are ours to endure 100%
I agree. This coronavirus, this self isolation, lock down, community enhancement whatever terms other country are using makes me realize that being self sufficient is very important. You don't have to go to groceries to panic buying, all you need to do is to grow your fruits, vegetables take good care of them. Then harvest it.
@@doreen1329 I believe we can't really fully mature if we can't really rely on ourselves. Lockdowns and panics such as this only shine a light at this issue. How wonderful would it be to secure yourself and to know you have everything essential covered. Many modern people are too distracted to even question or realise their poor situation.

The only issue I find is finding a property that would allow me to do what Liz does within my price range. I’m sure there are other ways like allotments etc

Yes, in fact, if every single person on earth, even the children, were to all move to Brazil, and we ALL do fit in Brazil, then we would still EACH have a full 1/2 acre each. That is sufficient for a full farmette, and if families combined, which they would, even a bigger farmette. The entire world population fits inside the space of Brazil.
I am in the same boat. You could not have said it better. I find that when I cannot garden depression begins to sink in and I get weak. Gardening strengthens me. I am disabled, and I do much of my gardening sitting on a stool. It is so wonderful to hear a person with the same heart , and/even though we are in different continents.

Loved watching this!! The chemicals etc that's on our food is unbelieveable and has to be half the reason people are so sick. I've always wanted a proper garden but due to chronic pain I just wasn't able but I'm 100% positive I will have a proper functioning garden next year and if I can grow even 50%-70% of the veg I'll be ecstatic. I honestly can't wait and binge watching all these videos

There is no better feeling, than to know that you have grown almost all the food you eat!!! I grew up on a farm, but it was only after my husband retired a year ago, that I started my dream garden! It is an amazing thing, to put a seed into the soil, watch it germinate, then grow, and actually produce a crop! I have grown almost everything we have put on our plate, ( with exception of chicken and fish, dairy and spices), this year, and with minimal to no pesticides, and chemical fertilizer! I have since put in Winter crops like shallot, garlic, beets, cabbage, greens, peas, beans, potato, herbs etc. I am lucky, in that a I live in Southern California, and can do two crops a year! Even the challenges of soil health, pests, and weather are interesting! People who has never grown anything, would never understand, until they try! I love everything about growing a garden!
Your slice of heaven was exactly what I was dreaming about the other day....I went to UA-cam, and there you were! whatever illness you have should be going with all those lovely organic veggies, plus the healing you get from being in nature and enjoying the results of all your hard work. Once I read something similar about someones grandma who came somewhere in the east Slovakia. When she was planting the seeds in her garden she was explaining to her grandchild: something is for the God, a bit for the birds, some for the bugs, and some part will be left for us to eat. We really do not need to kill everything around us to get as much food as possible. It is so much smarter to feel yourself as one of those who will be eating from this garden.
That's what I'm looking forward to, that satisfaction from doing something I love and not feeling trapped working 9to5 and hate that clocking in out...enough of that. I'm moving towards this life that Liz talks about. Working hard for yourself is more fulfilling than working hard for someone else who don't even care.
That sounds amazing, that's definitely my dream too! I am a financial advisor, always loved the garden, but never had the time to keep it going. The lock down has enabled me to work from home and spend time establishing a veggie garden and composting for the first time. Loving it so much and learned so much from your videos and other gardeners, thank you for sharing and inspiring me, I know what you mean when you say there comes a time when it doesn't feel like work, your passion takes over. I am there too!
You are my inspiration, and my motivation to keep on gardening, planting, growing in any way shape or form possible. I do relate to the awesome feeling behind this lifestyle; the life our almighty God intended for us. Sitting in front of a computer in a commercial building is abnormal, unfulfilling, and extremely unhealthy. We need to stop relying on stores to provide our food, as well. A lovely video Huw, it really sets out the journey Liz has taken and how it’s showing it’s beneficial outcomes. Isn’t Liz looking well! Well done Huw on your new book. I am in agreement with Liz on how it’s a slow process of learning and change. I’m transferring a large established ornamental garden to growing vegetables and more flowers as I was working hard to keep on top of it for 15yrs with no payback for my time and energy. Grass was rubbish, full of moss and weeds. I’m gradually taking the grass away. Dealing with large areas of bad weeds. I’ve wood chipped over cardboard, weed suppressant, left 3 yrs in some areas as so bad with ground elder, there I put 300mm high raised beds on top for veg. In other more favourable areas I’ve established perennial beds for raspberries, strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, globe artichokes inter mingled with flowers so it still looks pretty an it means I can manage more easily. As I’m turned 60 I’ve got to be mindful of the management. I moved 5 ton of wood chips this year, hopefully next year will be easier!
Very lovely garden and way of life. It is very interesting and amazing that this is news worthy and considered as "living the dream" in this part of the world. In Cameroon, this is a normal way of life, as most families especially in the rural areas (country side) grow what they eat and at times sell some to buy other basic needs.

Huw is a model of what I hope my yet very young children could grow up to be. Maybe not youtube gardening gurus, but responsible, productive, and motivated young adults at whatever it is they pick up as their career. And Liz is like a distant mentor, whose videos really help me wrap my head around one of *my* biggest mysteries of gardening; winter growing. I grew up in a climate where the hard winter is cold and long, so there are no gardens year round. I have to learn from scratch. This year, I'm going into winter with a good stock of potatoes in the cellar, a couple of perennials, and some chard and kale (and a row of gorgeous celery, I forgot!). I dropped the ball on fall sowing, but I'm thinking of just making myself a google calendar with alerts popping up on my phone for critical planting dates in our climate... It's still better than years before, but I feel like I'm squandering my acreage. Deer like the garden, though, and the chickens . The grass has gotten a bit long and animals love it... I'm learning from my failures, too, and planning next spring's planting so I don't start lagging too far behind.

@@HuwRichards I completely forgot that have four rows of leeks in the ground. They are rather small and sad, because I'm a beginner with winter crops, and made beginner mistakes. My failure was to attempt to transplant the seedlings too early, and then when they started growing, my chickens decided to till up my leek patch. I salvaged what I could, and may still see some in my kitchen. I hope. One of my children is sensitive to alliums, but can stomach leeks, so I use them and garlic as my main sources of "onion" in cooking. Because of a similarity in climates, U.K. based gardening and allotment youtube channels are teaching me more than many American books on the subject could, because most gardening authors this side of the pond appear to live in a colder climate with a hard freeze, and we live in a mild, maritime climate with the rain and fog to rival anything Arthur Conan Doyle dreamed up. Keep doing what you're doing. In the meantime, I may have to buy up some recently published gardening books, brew a cup of tea, and start planning for spring planting. ;)
LONG LIVE THE HOMESTEAD MOVEMENT. If more folks took up gardening there would be fewer people on anti-depressants. There is joy to be found in nurturing a thing and watching it grow. Then finally you get to EAT IT.
I am speechless watching this. I work in a soulless job and live yo be outdoors growing veg, doing woodwork etc. Unfortunately I cant see myself taking the plunge as I am in the ratrace and need to keep paying the mortgage. Well who knows what the future holds... anyway you should be really proud of what you have achieved. Well done.
It's really inspiring to see what Liz has achieved.I started out by leaving the rat race to buy 14 acres in a stunning area, and turn it into a dream. From a blank, rank pasture canvas I now have woodland, fruit trees and a veg patch with polytunnel. It can be crushing work though, and when late frosts kill sowings and transplants, pests destroy your work or after several years something isn't thriving anymore, it's really soul-crushing. Sometimes I just can't be bothered to go into the potting shed anymore. I know when people visit, they love the place. But when you've put your blood and years into something, you can't see it as a newcomer can and that's not something I'd ever expected. I'll watch Liz's videos and hopefully get my mojo back.

What a life. Relaxing video too! What I wouldn't give to be able to do the same. My grandfather had a huge area at his place that had everything and I used to work with him. He taught me everything. I miss those days. This video kind of took me back a bit then.

Our family can really relate to this. We did try to save as much money as possible, and we managed to use only 40-60€ per month! So it is really doable to minimize the cost of food. We, of course, have our own sources of meat too and we experiment a lot. Currently, we live near the city, but we've bought a homestead 100km away from our home. Thank you for the video and stay positive. Money isn't everything. I just wish that society would recognize this aswell...

Thanks! That's inspiring. We're also striving to live this alternative lifestyle of living with less but self-sufficient. We just started our garden last Spring, and have harvested, dried and stocked our veggies for winter.
I am almost there! The garden is getting to a warm population and fungus and now is time for the chickens ducks and quale to produce more compost for home use and sale! I couldn't ask for a better life . The only time I will go to the store is for goods like yeast flower oil vinegar sugar etc . Life is good

It's great to watch this. I love my job and don't want to give it up, but working remotely has really opened up the possibilities of moving to a more rural area. I now live in a place between the countryside and the city and already it makes such a difference to have a bit more green around me than in the city.
Absolutely loved this, so very compelling to watch. I even put down my crochet to pay full attention! Love watching both of your channels. I enjoy growing veg in the garden but can't wait to buy a bit of land to really get into it!

what a great video, bringing across a great story in a nice calm manner... the sacrificial plants is a great idea, which several I know also use, we need to protect and encourage our dwindling insect population, even the "bad ones" because they are good for other things. Even wasps are good since they eat the "bad" insects, so there should be room for all of them

Yes, I have sacrifice plants too. Mealy bugs ate the sacrifice tomato plant last year. I am also growing asparagus. It is starting it's second year. Here, in zone 9( northern Florida) it will take 3-4 years to produce. Labor or love. I love your infectious enthusiasm! Keep going girl! You're an inspiration!!!

Huw is a model of what I hope my yet very young children could grow up to be. Maybe not youtube gardening gurus, but responsible, productive, and motivated young adults at whatever it is they pick up as their career. And Liz is like a distant mentor, whose videos really help me wrap my head around one of *my* biggest mysteries of gardening; winter growing. I grew up in a climate where the hard winter is cold and long, so there are no gardens year round. I have to learn from scratch. This year, I'm going into winter with a good stock of potatoes in the cellar, a couple of perennials, and some chard and kale (and a row of gorgeous celery, I forgot!). I dropped the ball on fall sowing, but I'm thinking of just making myself a google calendar with alerts popping up on my phone for critical planting dates in our climate... It's still better than years before, but I feel like I'm squandering my acreage. Deer like the garden, though, and the chickens . The grass has gotten a bit long and animals love it... I'm learning from my failures, too, and planning next spring's planting so I don't start lagging too far behind.

@@HuwRichards I completely forgot that have four rows of leeks in the ground. They are rather small and sad, because I'm a beginner with winter crops, and made beginner mistakes. My failure was to attempt to transplant the seedlings too early, and then when they started growing, my chickens decided to till up my leek patch. I salvaged what I could, and may still see some in my kitchen. I hope. One of my children is sensitive to alliums, but can stomach leeks, so I use them and garlic as my main sources of "onion" in cooking.
Because of a similarity in climates, U.K. based gardening and allotment youtube channels are teaching me more than many American books on the subject could, because most gardening authors this side of the pond appear to live in a colder climate with a hard freeze, and we live in a mild, maritime climate with the rain and fog to rival anything Arthur Conan Doyle dreamed up. Keep doing what you're doing. In the meantime, I may have to buy up some recently published gardening books, brew a cup of tea, and start planning for spring planting. ;)
LONG LIVE THE HOMESTEAD MOVEMENT. If more folks took up gardening there would be fewer people on anti-depressants. There is joy to be found in nurturing a thing and watching it grow. Then finally you get to EAT IT.
I am speechless watching this. I work in a soulless job and live yo be outdoors growing veg, doing woodwork etc. Unfortunately I cant see myself taking the plunge as I am in the ratrace and need to keep paying the mortgage. Well who knows what the future holds... anyway you should be really proud of what you have achieved. Well done.
It's really inspiring to see what Liz has achieved.I started out by leaving the rat race to buy 14 acres in a stunning area, and turn it into a dream. From a blank, rank pasture canvas I now have woodland, fruit trees and a veg patch with polytunnel.
It can be crushing work though, and when late frosts kill sowings and transplants, pests destroy your work or after several years something isn't thriving anymore, it's really soul-crushing. Sometimes I just can't be bothered to go into the potting shed anymore.
I know when people visit, they love the place. But when you've put your blood and years into something, you can't see it as a newcomer can and that's not something I'd ever expected. I'll watch Liz's videos and hopefully get my mojo back.

What a life. Relaxing video too! What I wouldn't give to be able to do the same. My grandfather had a huge area at his place that had everything and I used to work with him. He taught me everything. I miss those days. This video kind of took me back a bit then.

Our family can really relate to this. We did try to save as much money as possible, and we managed to use only 40-60€ per month! So it is really doable to minimize the cost of food.
We, of course, have our own sources of meat too and we experiment a lot. Currently, we live near the city, but we've bought a homestead 100km away from our home.

This year I decided not to kill the snails, and was quite surprised that they only ate a couple of plants and everything else remained healthy. Are you considering bee keeping? Honey? I am almost there! The garden is getting to a warm population and fungus and now is time for the chickens ducks and quale to produce more compost for home use and sale! I couldn't ask for a better life . The only time I will go to the store is for goods like yeast flower oil vinegar sugar etc .

It's great to watch this. I love my job and don't want to give it up, but working remotely has really opened up the possibilities of moving to a more rural area. I now live in a place between the countryside and the city and already it makes such a difference to have a bit more green around me than in the city.

what a great video, bringing across a great story in a nice calm manner... the sacrificial plants is a great idea, which several I know also use, we need to protect and encourage our dwindling insect population, even the "bad ones" because they are good for other things. Even wasps are good since they eat the "bad" insects, so there should be room for all of them

Yes, I have sacrifice plants too. Mealy bugs ate the sacrifice tomato plant last year.
I am also growing asparagus. It is starting it's second year. Here, in zone 9( northern Florida) it will take 3-4 years to produce. Labor or love.
