Due to the huge popularity of this method I have turned it into a 10 lesson online course which goes into a lot more detail on how to create a monthly planting plan, and features extras such as my master sowing list which I use to guide me when filling a planting plan. This is great - I'm sold! One question though... do you have other videos explaining tips for designing your annual veg garden in the first place? I'm at the very early stages and I'm thinking rectangular beds are easier. But I'm not sure if there's anything I'm missing. Also - do you sell the permie ethics sweatshirt you're wearing?!

Nice video, but do you have for the people like me a video where you explain how to plant in a raised bed and what can be in it?

This kind of quality information is why you are on a very short list of experienced gardeners I chose as the direction I wanted for my family’s garden. There’s a dizzying amount of information out there but this is a realistic approach and in line with the way I want to have a relationship with the food and land that I expect to nourish my family. Thank you for being a rich source of information and delivering it clearly and thoroughly.

Thanks for the Video! Sorry for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Proutklarton Alive Products Plan (probably on Google)? It is a good one of a kind product for creating your greenhouse of saffron anywhere in the world without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my work buddy finally got astronomical results with it.

Have been a fan for about 6 months and have just found this video and found it so uplifting! Being retired for 3 years and now I am HAVING to try growing our own food I was so anxious on where to start and in what order until seeing this. Due to health reasons it was unlikely I would be able to DIG a garden so when I came across Huw and Co talking about no dig it has given me a new enthusiasm for gardening. I have 2 dalek compost bins already full so will start off with 1 or 2 beds of cardboard on grass and compost. Please keep them coming.

Thank you so much Huw. You have completely demystified the whole succession thing. I was losing the will to live with the bare soil patches in my my little plot for long periods of time. I watched many of your video on no dig, as a gardener of 64 I needed to change my usual tack and make things easier for myself. I couldn't bare not growing things. No dig works really well for me and it so much easier to spread successions in a smaller area, but the mixing of crops and knowing when to sow things a ready to transfer wasn't very synchronized. I feel truly enlightened, see your never to old to learn. Keep up the good work, as i'm very interested to see how the chop and drop goes.

So in May we need to build a wigwam (16:15). I thought "what in the world is a wigwam for?" My first thought was in case any native Americans happened to be passing by my property. Then I went to your main page and put "wigwam" in the search line. Makes sense now. LOL. I learned MORE than one thing from this video.

Great idea, Huw! Because I also have several fruit trees, perennial bushes and chickens, I will be adding a couple of areas to the side of the beds (Crops to Harvest and Maintenance Tasks) so I have everything in one place and I don't end up being overwhelmed by tasks and I make sure my tools and garden beds are ready for the next crop.

Loved this video! I've been making a monthly plan and I'll never do a yearly one again either. I use a spreadsheet, though, with each month separate. Then rows telling me when to start a crop indoors and when to plant it out, or when to direct sow. Another row with the germination time, another with the harvest time, another with notes on what'll follow that crop. Then general notes about it, and finally a row reminding me where I bought the seeds or plants, in case I have any questions if I bought them elsewhere. That way I see everything at a glance and have a definite month-by-month plan. It works wonderfully for me. I still have an insane amount of food growing out there now in February, so much that I'm going to have to get some family, friends and neighbors over here to take away all the excess they can use, so I can start the beds fresh for this season.
I spend the cold season, when there's not much to do out there but harvest, planning, planning and planning. I never plan TOO inflexible though, since sometimes I'll change my mind and think, "You know, I think I'll put the second crop of broad beans over there instead of here.", haha! I really, really like your way of planning, though, it's a lot more visual and will help a lot more people than my spreadsheet method. And yes, definitely going to buy your book. The first one was wonderful, so I'm looking forward to this one. :)

That’s it. For Leafy greens I just cut the leaves I need and leave the plants to produce more leaves. I will try your idea for maybe radishes, beets, carrots, and bok choi. Thank you.

I usually map my garden for spring, summer, fall-winter (I use my greenhouse, a hoop house, and cold frames). But I am trying to transition this year to a more productive plan--with succession and intercropping. The challenge for me is to plan ahead--what transplants do I need to go in next? It's tricky when you've not done it before. I made a master list on Excel with all the info I need for each plant. I want to put that into this planting plan. I think this is the next piece of the puzzle I need. Thanks for such excellent videos! I'm always learning something new from you!

Hi Rozzie. If you haven't already, have a look at the website gardenate.com
You can choose your area of Aust and see what you can grow each month. Each food plant on the list is a clickable link
that will take you to its own page to show you how to care for the plant, how long until harvest, companion plants and so on.
You can also sign up to get an email each month or fortnight with what to plant in your area.
I've been using it for years and love it (there's an app as well of course)
      We're in Central Vic
(ps, that website was Aussie to start but now shows other areas of the world)

I'm rather new to the gardening for food game, I've grown ornamental plants and flowers for years! This was such a helpful video, and it was presented so clearly, that I was able to understand how to make a monthly plan. I struggled this year, I was late for many crops, (everything turned out just fine) but I love being able to think month by month and know what needs to be done ahead of time. I like thinking that way, I'm a planner. This really made sense to me. This year was an experiment as well in knowing what I do want to grow. Now I know how I can plan it all out, and hopefully not miss out on timeframes and to make the most of the beds I do have (We are already planning on expanding our 3 raised beds to at least be 6) Thank you so much!

David Mcgregor We have had a bad summer for gardening here in Victoria Australia due to the bushfires, even though we are not close to the fires. The smoke has blocked out the sun and we have had rain consisting of red mud which coated the vegetables and reduced the yield considerably. Usually our tomatoes keep producing until April/May but they are nearly finished as are the cucumbers. However, sadly many of my fellow Australians have nothing left neither house or garden. We have been sharing our crops with others who don’t have a garden or a high income. “

Hello from snowy, COLD South Dakota, U.S.A.! This is a good video, I like the mix of talking, showing your action in the garden, and the computer shots. I needed to see this, as I have not been good about succession planting. I'm in a new location and starting a new garden this year, so I hope I can manage this better. I surely wish I had a more temperate climate and could grow year-round like you! But here, I don't have to have a greenhouse to grow tomatoes! There is always a trade, right?

Suzi, I'm next door in Montana. This is my first year exparimenting with extending my grow season with hoop houses over a couple of my beds and heavy hay mulch inside. I am loving Huw's monthly tracking plan because finally I have a longer season, at least for my cold season crops, and for the first time a chance to grow more than one crop in a space per year. Have fun experimenting!

@@tanarehbein7768 Hi Tana! I will also be using "season extenders", like a low tunnel over one of my 4'x16' beds. I'm also building a shed which will have a greenhouse extension on the South side. I won't be able to heat it, but it will still give me some more growing time at each end of the season!

@@afghanbunny1 oh soooo jealous of the thought of a greenhouse! I'm trying to scrape together the money to fence the elk out of my garden. I have a cheep and simple rolled wire and metal t-post fence which is working fine but my home owners association says I need some thing more decorative that goes with the style of my house. That is code for spend more money 😏. Right now I have eight 4' shelves with grow lights in my garage filled with micro greens, spinach, lettuce, beets, onions, celery, herbs, and flowers all started from seed. I can't wait till spring!😁

I like this. I am a market gardener. Last year was my first year selling at the farmers market and I know there were things I wanted to do differently like succession planting. Just going month to month like I do my budget makes it look less complicated. I am also going to try to like the three sisters to max out my 1/3 of an acre land

Very informative. I started monthly plans back in December 2019. At the mo they are hand written excel forms while I see how it works out. Mine doesn't include bed plans but I have an online system that does that. Key extras I have is when to prune shrubs (garden, not allotment/veg growing) and when to get things growing on heat; both worked badly last year for me! I have seen somewher online it will take most folk around three years to get this right; we all have to start somewhere :) August is key for getting the over wintering / Christmas veg in the ground I believe. Someone must have done a video ...
