How I BACK my WALL RUGS | 3 Ways to Finish Your Tufted Wall Hanging

- I love making rugs and wall rugs are my favorite. Here are three of my favorite ways to finish a wall rug - soft-backed, hard-backed and framed!
Soft-backed wall rugs are probably the first way most people learn to finish a rug. This technique simply uses a felt or fabric backing to cover the back of the rug with a d-ring or loop to hang it from. Because this is soft and can lay flat it can also double as a cute table mat!
Hard-backing is my personal favorite way to finish a wall rug. A slightly more advanced version of a softbacking this involves wrapping a piece of hardboard with felt and then stapling your finished peice to it. A sawtooth hanger is nailed into the back for hanging. This technique is great for keeping your tufting piece from sagging or folding against the wall.
Frame finishing is an option if you run out of glue! For smaller wall rugs you can display them in a picture frame. The trick is to get a frame with a matteboard and use this as the template for your wall rug. After tufting you can use a piece of double sided tape to help hold it in place in the frame and voila!

Hello. that vid was the one i was looking for!!. thank you for all the instructions very useful!. one question pls, what is the thickness of the felt you are using?
Goddamn of COURSE Sam is great at UA-cam
You know, just tryna be great all around lol ❤️
Good tips! Always tryin to see that backside ;-)
Que lindo🥰❤️💚
Awesome video!! Love your techniques. I was curious, do you ever sign the back of your work or anything like that? I am trying to figure out a clean way to do it.
I got some little tags made of my logo! There’s some pretty affordable options for it on Etsy.
Hey Sam,
Thanks for the video! It’s great!
I do have one question if I’m going to hang a large piece like 2 m what can I do for stabling instead of using the staple gun ?
Thanks so much, very helpful! One question: how thick is the felt you are using?
Do you have a video of you doing you backing from the beginning? I like how your color is around the felt backing.
This is all super helpful! How do you back your mirror pieces?
Usually the same way! Just cover the back in felt for small ones, hardboard method for larger ones.
I'd love to see a punch needle piece and how you do the hoope finishing method!
I’m not really a punch needler lol I’ve literally only ever done like 2 punch needle projects so I’m not the best resource for that beyond what I showed here.
This video is incredibly helpful, thank you! One question: when you use hardboard, how do you cut the board down? Do you need a saw? Thanks!
Yes you do need a saw. I have a jigsaw that I use!
I can tell what’s your favorite color by the way (orange) 😂 love your videos very
Educational I just starting my tufting journey
Omg you stapled it to the table, hahahaha 😂👍🏻.
😂
Great video, but have another question for you. What would you do for an a symmetrical tufted rug that i want to hang? ITts already soft backed. I love the idea of the hardboard but not sure how to cut curves in it to match the shape of the rug (two chickadees). Would love your advice or ideas!
Love watching your videos , I find them very useful , you’re like my virtual teacher 😊 what kind of hot glue gun do you have!? I bought one but just after 3 weeks the trigger doesn’t push the sticks out 😔
Your art is beautiful and this is such a great video. Do you think it’s possible to use cardboard for the backing if you don’t have access to a saw for cutting?
Thank you! You probably could but just be mindful that the cardboard likely won’t hold its shape as well or for as long.
you're good! I would glue on the backing around the edges, and cut two holes at the outer edges, and insert a dowel through the non glued backing with the slits. good for on the wall, or remove the dowel for the floor
Ahhhhhh yea I was thinking that may be possible but I was concerned it may bow over the dowel. I also thought you could attach it with loops from the top going directly through the piece but I’ve heard that it can pull the piece apart if it’s too heavy.
@@SamMadeThat well, I was referring to my 4 ' by 4' rectangular piece. smaller pieces like yours don't need that much hanging strength
Sooo useful! I love your work, I was wondering how do you stick the sawtooth hangers to the piece for hard backing?
They have little nails on them! You just hammer them right on.
@@SamMadeThat Thank you so much!! Will be trying this week
This is so helpful! Can you cut hardboard to work for pieces that are round or have abstract shapes?
Absolutely! I do it all the time.
@@SamMadeThat So cool!! Does it work to use an x-acto knife to cut it in that way? Or does it have to be a saw/some other wood-cutting tool?
your look like michael jackson.....so much ...... amazing🥰😍😍😍😍
What are you using to cut the hard board? It looks too thick for scissors.. thanks in advance!! Great work!!! 🫡
“What dat back do” Same fr
😂😂😂
Thank you Sam for all this helpful videos! Could you tell us what yarn brand you’re using?
I use acrylic yarn, I love the Big Twist brand from Joann Fabrics because they have a huge selection of colors and I also use the Super Saver Red Heart brand.
@@SamMadeThat thank you!!
Did I just see myself in a youtube video? HAHA!
Thanks for answering my question!
Yes! Thank you so much for asking it ❤
Also I’d like to ask you about , how do you like those fiskars orange scissors? Do they have a good snip at the very tip!? Cause mine they catch the yarn when I try to carve in between my colors.
Can you put a wooden dowel along the top and bottom border for larger scale pieces with heavy weight, like rectangular panels, in order to keep it from waffling when hanging on a wall? Then technically it could be rolled like a thick scroll for easy transport.. maybe? Thoughts??
Hello, how do you determine the cost of each carpet? I love your job
Hi! I was wondering where do you continue to get the black felt backing. Noticed tuftinggun.com aren’t carrying anymore. Thank you and thank you so much for such an informative video!
I just get felt from Joann Fabrics. Be careful if you use it for floor finishing though as felt can be really slick on hardwood or tile!
Wonder: What about sewing a backing by hand using those large needles used for furniture fabric / leather?
Hey there. Do you have any classes that you teach. I’m in the Dallas are. I’m a painter but I really want to get into this style of art.
thank you! I really had no materials for any of this, and as the list of requirements grew I became disheartened. I was afraid I didn't have the tools or workspace to tuft, let alone create backings and mounts to put them all walls. my grandmother had a HUGE collection of yarn. I wish I had saved it after she died. I had no idea how expensive it all was! but to be honest I have nowhere to store it in my little apartment so I can't regret too much. I'll have to get quite savvy with space saving if I'm going to start tufting!
You talk about "texture on the walls... art that you can touch..." this is specifically why I want to start tufting. I used to be very creative, I drew everyday in middle school and highschool, and for a couple years after graduating. But after I started working full time, it was just dead in the water. All I could do was come home, walk my dog, eat and sleep. But I've realized this is no way to live. I want to LIVE. I finally opened my eyes and looked around, and noticed my room was so stale, like a hospital. I'd never had the time or energy to decorate. I'd be embarrassed to have anyone over. I needed color. I was just going to buy other people's works on Etsy, but I definitely couldn't afford more than a few, and I wanted all 4 walls of my room COVERED. Back to the original point of this comment (sorry, sidetracked) I'm autistic, and the thought of having 3D textured art on my walls I could just admire and touch to my heart's content seemed absolutely perfect. I understand creating the rugs isn't much cheaper than buying them, but I'm hoping it will get me back into making art again. Thanks to people like you I feel it might actually be achievable, and not just a nice thought.
I couldn't have laughed harder at the table being stapled😭😭😭
Hi!! Thank you so much for this amazing informative video! I was wondering, I know you joked about it but IS cardboard an option to use as backing? I have a medium-size rug that I want to back with something with a little more structure than felt, but I don't want to commit to hardboard because I don't have any tools to cut it down to the exact size I need:( (unless this is something they can cut it for you at home depot... this is my first time making a rug and I know nothing) Thank you Sam!!
You probably could but what I would do is still back your piece with felt, then cover your cardboard with felt and then just staple your piece to the covered cardboard. I wouldn’t do this to sell but just something for yourself it would be nice enough and then if for some reason the cardboard got damaged or bent or wet somehow you could easily replace it. I hope that helps!
@@SamMadeThat thank you SO much for your reply!! that's so helpful!
I have a question ❓ I have a 24 inches X 36 inches rug. It's light weight and I bought the floating acrylic frame . Can I just put it on the frame or I would have to glue it to make it stay in the middle? Can I use 3m backing as well
❤️
Can u hang something after already backing it ?
OMG why did I just find this video, I attached velcro on my wall and all the paints come off 😭 Thank you so much love your works
Sam, I’m a beginner and just used Elmer’s glue on the back of some wall hangings for the first time. Even after using lots of glue, my Elmers pieces are nowhere near as stiff as yours. How much Elmers or how many layers did you use? I’d like to achieve a bit more stiffness with my glue so the pieces don’t curl on the edges too much. Thank you!
Hey! I’m not sure how to describe how much I use but I only use one layer and try to really work it in an even layer. I make sure every strand of yarn and backing I can see is coated. Curling edges can be caused by over tufting and/or cutting it off the frame before it’s fully dry! 💕
@@SamMadeThat Thank you! How would you describe over tufting? I definitely had some sloppy parts where lines crossed.
my tapestry weights 3kg aprox and it measures 1,30 x 1m, is it too heavy or it wont fall?
I need your help does you tufting glue be sticky after the glue us dry
can i use these for mirror rugs?? since its heavier?
For sure!
CAN YOU DO A VIDEO ON HOW TO MAKE A TASSEL WHEN TUFTING A RUG?? (TASSEL INSIDE THE RUG NOT ON THE EDGES)
You would have to punch needle or latch hook longer pieces of yarn directly into those sections by hand.
The tuft rugs I bought recently already had felt on the back, and I tried using velcro tapes to attach on the wall. However, the velcro was not sticking to the felt completely. What do you recommend to the rugs that already have felt on?
Yea those adhesive strips don’t really like felt. You can go to your local craft store or hardware store and get a pack of d-rings and just hot glue one to the back. Or you can make a little loop out of any leftover felt you may have and see or hot glue it to the back. If the piece is small you can just hang it on a thumb tack for minimal wall damage!
@@SamMadeThat Thank you so much! My piece is pretty big and heavy, so the adhesive strips are falling off more easily. If my piece is big, should I drill or nail an anchor and hang on them? The paints on the wall is already falling off because of the adhesive strips and I'm so sad 😭😭😭
Yes you’ll probably need more than one loop and I would definitely use a screw if it’s heavy!
@@SamMadeThat Thank you so much!!
she really said "awesome sauce"
How hard is it to cut the hardboard ? I have really abstract pieces.
It’s definitely not something you can do by hand, you’d need a jigsaw or scroll saw to cut it if you have intricate shapes.
