Preventing people from leaving the country by taxing them will incentivise people to leave the country. As with all government regulation this too will have the opposite effect.
That makes no sense. If you care about being taxed, you wouldn’t take the exit tax into consideration. Lots of government regulations have very clearly lowered prices as intended, like the the healthcare system
im in Norway and im hesitant to leave because they have an exit tax here as well.....ill lose 38% of my total assets...which were all paid for with already taxed income....ridiculous!!
And we were thinking of moving back to my country (Singapore) because of the lower taxes. Here we pay almost 50%. It’s not publicly shared but we are aware of many Dutch who have migrated because of the poor pension and high taxes.
@@migueldefares Healthcare costs are the highest of Europe though. But same is true about other cost of living expenses, we pay the highest electricity price in Europe and 21% VAT on top of that. The shitty public transport system is the most expensive of Europe and there are lots of outages. Owning a car is freakishly expensive and not an option for many people. Only if you have a three times modal income can you live a reasonable life but you have to be a civil servant or politician for that as there are not much ways to advance in the corporate world (they also hire politicians for all the top jobs) and setting up your own business is only feasible if you have lots of money. Of course the truly rich don't get taxed as much as middle class people. And it is these salon socialists who come up with all those plans to make life even more expensive such as the European green new deal and the energy transition. Did you know that the Netherlands has the largest gas field of Europe but they poured concrete in it to make drilling impossible so the people have to buy expensive shale gas from the US (as they also cut down on Russian gas and got Ukraine to cut off the spigot and blow up North Stream 2). You can't even go off the grid because there is no place out of the watchful eye of the state. And now they try to keep the people inside the country like a huge open air prison.
Not quite. If you ran away from the USSR, your passport would be revoked and you would be forever banned from entry. This new tactic is far more effective.

@kacperpiotrowski7239 There is no logical counter-argument. No highly skilled and highly compensated professional is going to take a 5 year job in the Netherlands if there is going to be an exit tax on the benefits that he/she already paid income tax and VAT on. An Exit Tax is simply an advance on Death Taxes.

The tax (36%) on unrealized gains, which will be valid in a couple of years, will be a total disaster for allot of people. Imagine having 100k profit on the tax date, and 2 months later you have 50k or less....people gonna cry out of misery!
Not quite. They never ever paid tax on those unrealized gains, so it is justified and reasonable that they finally do, when they want to export the loot.

Now, where do we move to? Southern Europe has insanely high taxes. Smaller boutique nations are insanely expensive. You are ok if you are wealthy but there's no good deal for low and middle tiers. Even welfare is extremely difficult to get, so they only exist to tax us. Aren't we called "subjects" for this reason? They own us. But that's everywhere. Places like Dubai are baiting and slowly switching, of course they want to tax everyone once enough people move there. They were also going to start border 🛂 control last month. Nope.. camping outside a designated camping area is forbidden in most local regulations.. so it doesn't matter if you use a tent, a car, a camper or only a sleeping bag. There are a lot of special "camper" area's where you are able to stay for the night in your camper for a few €'s.
@@dikkiedik53 No, no what? And when did I ever speak a word about camping? Please do us all a favor and be more serious. You're wasting people's time. For anyone interested; it is illegal in many/most (?) municipalities in the Netherlands to sleep in a car. You can google "Artikel 2.20 Slapen op of aan de weg". Here's a machine translation: "It is prohibited to use the road as a sleeping place or to use a vehicle, vessel, caravan, tent or other shelter on or near the road or public water as a sleeping place, to spend the night in it or to provide the opportunity to do so." There has been lots of news stories how insanely stupid this law is. For example, a truck driver who stopped at a legit truck stop to spend the night because the law regulates how much he can drive each day and, well... because he is human he needs to sleep, this guy woke up the following morning with a ticket on the windshield. The Netherlands may look pretty on a post card but it is on numerous accounts systematically violating human rights and decency.

Lol why did you go there? Dutch people that are net benefactors have been leaving for years. This is the entire reason they are contemplating the exit tax in the first place.
Don't forget that money isn't the only reason why people leave. It is also the destroying of Dutch culture by mass integration that decide: enough now. I would rather integrate in another country that I agree with culturally than stay in my own and see it go to shambles
Not only taxation but also overregulations makes people want to leave. It's not the rich but rather the middleclass who wants to leave and the Dutch have a tradition of globetrotting anyway.
I look at the video and the Dutch look like a perfectly run place. Clean healthy and pretty little villages. If you have to a 90% tax it’s worth it. Any excess money you have you really don’t need
@@bvanderfordit has nothing to do with needing, besides 90% tax would be detrimental to the whole economy. Higher tax rate does not equal more tax revenue
This will keep old money in the country, but young entrepeneurs will be motivated to leave. Interesting moves by the EU countries attacking its own sucessful citizens and importing low education migrants, and live mostly of tourism. This is already happening in Portugal and Spain (in other ways) for many years but when Netherlands, France and other rich countries implement these measures they know they can't grown in a global world. Which means EU is sinking slowly and then it will be fast is my guess.
Glad I left back in 2019, life was much better half a decade ago and people thought I was a crazy risk taker. I hope to God they don't initiate citizenship based taxation next. Money hungry thieves.
Few months ago I was looking to move to the Netherlands to find a new horizon. 1) Is extremely difficult to get hired, 5 interviews with 2 different multinationals companies, very bureaucratically complicated process 2) Time wasters never notified me about what comes next. 3) when I put my condition to be taxed reduced being a foreign high skilled person, they ugly face that 4) the house crisis in main cities is real, never tell you that, relocating there is a nightmare 5) people is happy making 50.000 or less euros a year being taken/tax almost half of it. 6) there’s is a saying people sometimes don’t want to escalate or being promoted to avoid being taxed more. Thanks god I rejected those poor and high tax proposals.
I fled the Netherlands to Switzerland and cut my taxes in half. All of what your saying is true. Thing to add is : People are very envious of success and entitled. They think the people of this world owe them something. The exit tax is part of this trend.
Cost of living also is a disaster in holland on many other things. Car road tax is 6 fault the cost of same car in germany. Bpm or new registration tax can exceed the cars value when its environmentally unfriendly like v8 cars. Taxes on food on the high level etc. Same with real estate tax and health care insurance not to talk about the real estate renting costs. Or pay 400k for a shed to live in.
You shouldn't be over 45 too. A 25-year old HR womyn will not hire someone who is the same age as their dad or mum. They look at you weirdly if you even make it through the door.
I am Dutch and have a foreign wife, who doesn't live in the Netherlands. She already owns all our assets on paper, because the Netherlands has a tax where they steal a percentage of your assets every year.
Bad idea to put all your assets under name of a girlfriend, because once the relationship end, U will end up poorer than world's poorest beggar, as none of assets are under your own name , but are under the name of your girlfriend
As a citizen in The Netherlands I can guarantee that most of us do want to leave the country. However, we have the preference of speaking the Dutch language day-to-day, and there aren’t that many countries in the world where Dutch is the native language. The countries that do have Dutch as a first language have a worse environment than The Netherlands itself, so basically The Netherlands is our only option for language preference.
@ I respect your opinion and preference, I really do. However, I grew up speaking Dutch my entire life. Switching from Dutch to English on a day-to-day makes my head feel tired. I play video games with English speakers online, but even after having a conversation of 20-40 minutes in English online, I start to get a headache. Not that the English speakers are bad people, it’s just that my brains are not used to speaking English continuously. And I think my brains will never get used to it, no matter how long I wait. No offense, really.
All individuals (wealthy or not) must take what he’s saying seriously. Having 1 passport in today’s day and age is a death blow. I know so many people with permanent residence for example who’re not applying for citizenship just because they are lazy. What they fail to understand is that permanent residence can also be taken away!
You're not legally allowed to have dual citizenship in the Netherlands except for some exceptions? I think if I get married to a foreigner I can have his citizenship too but other than that it's not really possible. You automatically forfeit dutch citizenship.
Im from the Netherlands and i can confirm the Dutch government has last their minds... im thinking of moving my one person consultancy to Latvia and moving myself to Thailand
Dutch citizenship: if you get a second passport and your Dutch passport expires before you renew it....there is a good chance you won't get a new one. At least, that was the case a few years ago. So illegal immigrants without documents get to stay indefinitely, Dutch-by-birth lose their citizenship.
As a Dutch tax lawyer i do want to give a small nuance that the tax treaties which the Netherlands holds with different countries will have precedence. If this new exit tax is not condoned by the treaty, it should have no material effect on the taxation of the person. The chance of a country accepting this exit tax seems rather low considering it would only worsen the GDP/economy of that country (i.e. Dubai).
As a Dutch tax law student I agree. But the UAE is not a good example, the UAE is so far I know the only country with a tax treaxy with the Netherlands where to be a resident of the UAE under the tax treaty you have to have residency in the UAE and you have to be a national of the UAE.
Hey Andrew! In Germany they went even further, now of you have ETFs over 500.000 Euro and move out, they will count as if you are selling and have to pay taxes (In Gemany it's 25% capital gains tax).
You first part 45% taxed in your income saver into an etf and then when you want to leave the country your again pat 25% on your etf only for leaving the country. Are you right in your mind?
You first payed 45% on your income. With the little money left you decide to invest in ETFs. Now if you are well off and want to leave they take again 25% of your ETF in taxes, they calculate as if you have sold. So you get taxed on money that is already taxed, which you haven't even taken out. Are you right on your mind?
Which I don't understand. I am not advocating for tax evasion and never would, but hypothetically you move to Paraguay, and you get a bill from the tax authority of Netherlands for 500k, most of which you don't even probably have because it's an unrealized "gain". What can they do? I guess refuse to renew your Dutch passport if you don't pay the bill, but that's about it.
The Netherlands has had an exit tax for a long time already. It's called a 'Conserverende aanslag' (protective assessment). It's like a normal tax assessment, with the special aim to preserve/protect the Dutch tax claim on income that has been accrued during the period of residency, but has not been taxed yet.
@ you realise the US actually taxes their citizens even when they move to another country? Not once, but for the rest of their loves unless they permanently cancel their US passport. So seriously, how are the NL rules here so absurd from a US perspective?
@@chuck_norris And the result of that is that young and capable people are leaving the country in record numbers to work on their ideas in other countries 😅
California is also talking about this. The theory goes: people are leaving CA to avoid paying taxes. That is a form of tax evasion, so they need to pay taxes on the current year and projected next year earnings even after they leave. It's just being discussed, and it is not even a bill, just talk. But the fact that the state legislature would even opening discuss an exit tax for moving to another state in the USA shows you where things are heading. WA wants a wealth tax. NY is taxing you for driving in Manhattan. etc.etc.
I appreciate your " Live like a King", series. It shows that Canada, the US, Western Europe, aren't the only good countries anymore. Most people would think that Armenia, is some back woods, hick, poor country. Even the old "Iron curtain" countries, have done rather well for themselves. They're modern, by even the "West's" standards.
To be fair, Armenia is "some back woods, hick, poor country", even when compared to Ukraine, let alone Russia or more prosperous nations like Poland/Czechia. The fact that you see it as not so bad speaks more of how far the West has fallen than anything else. Just consider US vs the rest of the world in the late 80s and now. Stark difference.
Van de regen in de drup. Ik ga uit Spanje weg omdat het belasting geld wordt uitgegeven aan vriendjespolitiek en corruptie: betaalt bijna net zoveel in Spanje als in NL maar krijgt er veel minder voor terug.
what was a universal human right? Freedom of Movement? They did something similar during the Roman empire. It was the precurser to serfdom. You might aswell say that an exit tax is one step closer to a form of serfdom.
Yes. Some of the "developing countries" will become developed countries as those who THINK they are on top will continue to see an exodus of people and wealth.
I am living here for the past 14 years and i am also thinking of leaving. as a senior swe i earn a "comfortable" salary and its not gonna be the case in a few years when they raise the income tax into oblivion
Canada has the same system in place. When you want to become a non-resident for tax purposes, it is assumed you have sold your assets and now owe tax to the Canadian Govt.
You politicians, it's quite simple: leave us alone with your bureaucracy and your constantly reinvented taxes and create a safe society for your own people. Then nobody will want to emigrate.
Politicans are only interested in the public when it's voting time, for the rest the only want your money and controll your life to the max. Welcome to the prison without bars or walls!!
They already have an exit tax that is rarely spoken about. When leaving you are liable to pay back the tax relief on all the pension contributions you made although strangely they normally don't do anything for 10 years...not sure how this all works out in reality. Also, there's a huge irony with this new bill as NL has long had a "30% tax ruling" for new expats and a new company 10 year tax exemption, both of which favor international companies to set up in NL, funnel overseas profits through it and therefore favor NL unfairly over other countries as a tax haven and non-NL employees over their own nationals similar to H1-B!
create headquarters in Romania, with 10 employees and you only pay 1% tax on your profit, while still living in Germany, Netherlands, other EU countries...
Has it also occurred to libertarians that as part of the war on Europeans and Europe, getting us all to leave is exactly what they want. I'm not saying it isn't the right choice for some. Maybe it is. But I'm wary of this being the answer pushed for everyone. Fighting back IS an option
I was subsidized when I left many many years ago. Finalized my last Tax and no penalty needed to be paid. I was instructed to apply to receive my AOW / Pension benefit even when I have worked in the Netherlands only a small number of years. The Dutch Government now pays a small % of my Pension, but is is paid directly to the NZ Government. I don't see a single $0.01 of it. A lot of drama for absolutely no gain.
Dutch person here. You are misleading like other YT channels. Alll the speculations about a potential 5-year tax obligation, also know for exit tax, have not been translated into legislation. Implementing such rules would require significant changes for the Dutch government. Countries like Belgium and Germany, where many Dutch businesses and cross-border workers are active, may be forced to reevaluate their fiscal policies in response. Such changes could negatively affect economic cooperation in border regions. Additionally, these countries could invoke EU regulations to protect the free movement of people and capital or even introduce countermeasures, such as modifying tax incentives or tightening their own emigration rules. However, this may be less about creating enforceable legislation and more about deterring entrepreneurs from leaving. The Dutch government appears to recognize that an increasing number of small business owners are considering leaving the country due to the fiscal and political climate. By floating these kinds of measures, the government may aim to instill fear and discourage businesses from relocating abroad. The risk, is that this strategy could backfire. It may increase tensions in cross-border cooperation and further weaken the Netherlands’ competitive position. It’s crucial to consider the broader international implications and economic relationships before pursuing such measures.
You could be right, but I highly doubt that the government is playing poker with legislation like this. Either way if you have a business, you shouldn't risk it and leave imho.
@ Politics has always been a game of poker, it’s all about strategy and scenarios. Beyond that, he is spreading misleading information with the aim to attract attention to his platform and profit from selling subscriptions.
@Dragan224M There is no legislation yet, just a motion asking the government to investigate the possibilities. Drafting anything concrete could take years. Having said that, I do think this is coming eventually, although I doubt many small countries like the Netherlands will do it unilaterally. People should prepare for this possibility and have a plan B at least.
In Germany 🇩🇪 it’s the same. We have a exit tax if you have more then 1 percent of a company. From the 1.1.2025 there is also an exit tax for investment funds. We left Germany 🇩🇪 on the 30th of December 2024
This is not something that's imminent now. They voted for a motion calling on the government to "investigate the possibilities". What this means in the Netherlands (and I guess anywhere) is that it's going to take years. The motion was brought in by opposition parties, although some government parties also voted for it. But the government is currently a coalition of 4 parties that will not agree on it any time soon. I do think this is coming in the future, just because of how (Western) Europe is circling the drain and how the politician's reflex is to act like an abusive spouse. Look at how they are already trying to problematise the mere fact that people are leaving NL. Now most people normally wouldn't see this as a problem, but look how quickly that changed during the latest flu outbreak. Along with many other things, the government tapped into the anger and envy of ordinary people that some people could independently travel to places without as many restrictions, and this created huge popular support, because everyone should be equally miserable according to the mindset that a lot of Northern European people subscribe to.

Every developed country in the world has an exit tax. It's normal to expect someone to pay taxes over the profits and gains that have grown while they were in the Netherlands. In general, you get 10 years time to pay the exit tax. There are loopholes through which people can avoid this tax claim, like using the capital gains article in tax treaties which usually gives the entire right to tax to the country of residence. The motion of the Tweede Kamer to combat tax avoidance by emigration of wealthy Dutch nationals to low tax jurisdictions is completely justified, not just legally but morally, because this will only take effect against cases where a tax treaty will not apply. The Netherlands has a tax treaty to avoid double taxation with over 100 countries. The proposed measure is only against the very few cases that the wealthy abuse to avoid paying their fair share (percentage wise, they barely pay anything even now). If you're against paying your fair share of tax, the Netherlands will tax you, and you can't complain to your new low tax country because they will not have a tax treaty against double taxation. Aggressive tax planning is getting broken down further every year thanks to the developments in the OECD like the Anti Tax Avoidance Directives, Pillar 1 & 2. Compare the current tax climate to just 10 years ago and you see everything changed. Eventually the wealthy tax abusers won't have anywhere to hide.
Nah, only collapsing ones like Netherlands and Germany do. Most countries, and even most European countries don't. What is their "fair share" by the way? 36% on unrealized "gains"? Imagine a person has a company worth 10 million on paper, they have to pay 3.6 million in cash, which they probably don't have. The whole point of taxation is to fund for public services, when you move outside of the country, you don't benefit from those anymore. This seems to me more like slaves trying to buy their freedom than taxation. And how is the government going to enforce this anyway? Most countries won't collect taxes on behalf of the Dutch government, it's not like The Netherlands can exert diplomatic pressure on most countries like the USA.
@@MartialHeroesPwnz Eventually, high tax countries will face massive problems, because whatever amount of tax they take, their core problem will not change: excessive government spending. Wealth is created elsewhere, because nobody with a clear mind will work on his business ideas in a place, that only taxes, taxes and taxes. This is one of the reasons, why Europe is lagging behind when it comes to Tech companies and start-ups. If all you have are taxes, intelligent entrepreneurs will choose other places.
Unfortunately, we are unable to obtain 2nd passports without losing our Dutch one, as native born Dutch citizens, which wouldn’t be an issue but in most cases it means losing access to the European single market. I want to make a few points that rarely ever get highlighted, for starters The Netherlands has had Washington wispear in her ear about going after and attacking the Rich and wealthy.Because for some reason the wealthy has entrenched the western countries while creating massive gaps in income or was that because of reckless government currency printing that is being recycled back to the same central banks who issues it out.The second point is this is what happens when you don't continue to improve your infrastructure, education system, healthcare system and public transportation I know we all can agree on this there is far more wrong with these western countries besides the high taxes. The third point is simply this, they can attack and go after the wealthy all they want to but if there not improving the middle class, low income class then what good will it do.ultimately what this is really showing is that western countries only want there countries filled with nothing but slave wage people People who work hard long hours, many days and just barely getting by because since the 20th century they haven't done anything to support entrepreneurs, small businesses, freelancers and independent contractors. The other thing I am noticing is the lengths they are going to keep Amazon,Walmart,Target, Apple, Microsoft, Goodman Sachs,J.P Morgan chase relevant will be the death of western countries.I have said this before the corporations are the problem not the wealthy because the wealthy people of today are entirely different than someone like a warren buffet. The wealthy people of today created there own value and raised themselves out of poverty without the need of government loans, bonds, government credit, and most importantly without these corporations and these western country governments don't like that at all. That my friends is the real reason why there going after the wealthy people.

Dubai).
Look at the intent. Zoom out the graph. What does the long-term trend indicate?
As a Dutch tax law student I agree. But the UAE is not a good example, the UAE is so far I know the only country with a tax treaxy with the Netherlands where to be a resident of the UAE under the tax treaty you have to have residency in the UAE and you have to be a national of the UAE.

The only fair tax is tax on things you buy. Not income. Not death. And certainly not exiting!
"There's a fifteen dollar leaving town tax."

The Netherlands: low birthrate, an aging population, immigrants from third world and second world countries. A shortage of affordable houses, neither for sale nor for rent. Wokism, greensplaining. But, we do have stroopwafels, with sugartax.
There is no sugar tax in NL.

Thank you for this video. I have been waiting more than a year for this info. Greetings from Amsterdam 🇳🇱
You're welcome. Glad to help!
I’m super concerned about plans for unrealized gains tax in the Netherlands. The information out there is not clear yet…
In some instances it is a logical move but in others it isn't. But in most cases though it is ridiculous.
How can this be legal in Europe if you move from one country in europe to another country in europe?
EU is simply a mess and it's getting worse for many nation states that have govts that like to force "their" people to feed them ze bugz.
The governments are out of control,
Netherlands already has some form of annual asset tax where an assumption is made on the yield whether realised or not.... Super nasty and crazy.
It show we are treated as property, which is a violation of human rights.
I am a Dutch citizen and have to say: "Do your own research!". Yes taxes are not nice but if you don't leave now you might have to pay exit taxes!
Well said
Nah, only collapsing ones like Netherlands and Germany do.
Though I am seriously considering moving to Switzerland, in order to potentially decrease my tax burden as I am currently paying around 45% on my income and investments
And there is already talk about extending this exit tax to everyone additionally the plan is to also have you pay 5 years after your exit to to at least the Dutch tax rate, which means that if you move to a country with lower taxes you will have to pay the difference to the Dutch government as well
Yeah, you're too valuable to just leave and the state having lost their treasury income that govt wants to be used for many destructive causes like sustainability of war.
Thing is you should count the cost....all you save on tax, you loose on expensive living costs. Be aware that each kanton has big differences in taxation of which Zürich very high....I lived there for eight years.
The mark of the beast is already here
I want to make a few points that rarely ever get highlighted, for starters The Netherlands has had Washington wispear in her ear about going after and attacking the Rich and wealthy.Because for some reason the wealthy has entrenched the western countries while creating massive gaps in income or was that because of reckless government currency printing that is being recycled back to the same central banks who issues it out.The second point is this is what happens when you don't continue to improve your infrastructure, education system, healthcare system and public transportation I know we all can agree on this there is far more wrong with these western countries besides the high taxes.
I live in Netherlans and they heave losts of tax rules to steal youre money ...
