Great video, used it to rplace my head gasket. Interestingly the same head bolt on my timemaster was loose. Noticed when I pulled that head bolt out it had bits of aluminum on the threads. That got me thinking, that head bolt is the closest to the exhaust port. That bolt will get the most heat exposed to it. This brought back memories to me. Back in the early 70's I owned 2 VW bugs and worked in a shop that specialized in VW repair. When a bug came in for a tune up it was our precedure to pull the rocker arms off and re-torque the heads, (you see where I'm going with this) it was common to find the Number 3 cylinder head bolts loose, (by design not enough cooling to number 3 cylinder) or you were unable to torque them which meant a helicoil was installed because the threads were stripped. So for me in Minnesota after about 7 months of use here at the end of the season when I winterize my mower I will check the torque on my Timemaster.

Wish I would've seen this before I sent mine to the shop for this same repair. What was supposed to be a 2 week wait turned in to 5 weeks and a $200 bill.
Great video, I should have did this repair myself but instead choose to bring it in to the shop I use because I’m busy with work. This sounds like the repair that I needed. I also recently changed my carburetor not too long ago.
Er - uh, well - I have NO IDEA! My wife and I were walking in the neighborhood and saw this diamond in the rough sitting on the curb for the trashman. Thanks to you I now have a top performing mower for about 10 bucks
I have the same problem on the same engine , just mine is mounted on an pressure washer . Both head bolts from the spark plug side was loose tightened when on the other side was strongly tightened ( I don’t know is they get loose by the vibrations ( but then the question is why the other side bolts didn’t get loose ) or our engines are assembled by the same guy :) The head gasket was blown out on exactly the same place . And muffler bolts was loose as well despite the retainer bracket was bent properly . One of the muffler gaskets was intact when from the other only the metal skeleton was remaining:) There was a problematic start since brand new and since I’m not professional small engine mechanic I didn’t know that the gun shooting sound ( when kill switch is turned off on hot , running engine is sign for blown gasket ( thanks for that tip!) . Maine was doing that since brand new but since I use it once a year neglected the problem until this year when I wasn’t able to start it at all . I troubleshooted before removing the head . Plugged the exhaust port and when rotated the flywheel manually was very easy to locate strong air blowing close to the exhaust port , but not from the port since it was plugged. And my gas tank cap fail as yours as well :) The same thing ( with head bolts loose tightened) here ua-cam.com/video/1ygvX1ob1fQ/v-deo.html after the 9th minute .
YOU ARE LUCKY! I had same engine mounted on a pressure washer. Exhaust bolts broke loose. I actually have a repair video on that as well. I got lucky and so did you! The gas tank…I finally converted it to an older style tank. People have commented that they had great success with a new oring! Keep me updated!
@@pattayperformance fixed it , even already pressure washed the driveway . Started right from the first pull very easy . Adjusted the valves . Explosions in the muffler doesn’t seems to be related to the blown head gasket , most probably when the engine is hot and in the fuel tank still present some fuel and you turn the kill switch to off , the ignition stop making sparks but since the engine is rotating and act as a air pump still suck fuel from the carburetor, wen this fuel reach the muffler ignites and the explosion occurs. There are some carburetors for bigger B&S engines that have special electric valve on the main jet in order to prevent such explosions and the “dieseling “ if you have a lot of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber . The torque momentum for the head bolts BTW is 210 pound/ inches ! If you tight lighter probably your head gasket will be blown out again . Rechecked the tightness of head bolts after few hours washing and all was OK , so probably originally they wasn’t tightened properly ( especially the head bolts from the carburettor side .Also looks like the engine want colder plug mine is original B&S made by Champion RC12YC will try RC11YC or will replace it with NGK because they have wider heat range and cover both 11and 12 Champions heat ranges simultaneously.
I just wanted to say thank You I was on the right track but I received 2 head gaskets one like is on there now and 1 that has metal ring around cylinder
Just wanted to say thanks! My head gasket looked exactly like yours. About $15 later and an hour w/your video and its running much better. I was pretty close to just repowering the thing. Appreciate it. This mower's definitely somethin'... great design but very poor quality. Only 5 years old w/1HR per week / seasonal residential usage and it's been new pulleys, belts, head gasket, ignition coil, carb, and now I'll be putting in a transmission. I picked up 2 mowes for free by somebody who didn’t know what they were doing and tried to fix it themselves well let’s just say that Kohler is parts now . The other a troybilt one he hydrolocked. I'm on my 3rd timemaster and honestly they all seem to start losing some cutting power after about 25 hours of use, I've never checked head gaskets but plan to now that you walked me thru it, appreciate the vid!
@27:01 just wanted to add.. that metal bracket is also an ignition coil ground that connects at the end of the line of the kill switch and must be lined up on this tabs to make a connection to the carburetor mounting bolts. failure to do so will result in an engine that will not shut off if running okay with a crooked bracket. (this might not apply to all 190cc briggs engines)
@@pattayperformance i finally wrapped up the head gasket swap. the briggs motor on the timemaster had no head gasket from the factory. wasn't straight forward at first. the added thickness of the head gasket forced me to adjust the valves and governor. ......hurts my brain
My Time master died. Mechanics warned me of the puff puff the engine makes. They said run it til it dies.. It died. Going after the head gasket today. This video was helpful. Let's see how it goes. Mower bought new in 2011. First time of engine failure in 10 years. Always used VP (94-0ctane) fuel in my motors. Yes it is spendy but, from chainsaws, blowers, weed Wackers, and mowers this is the first failure of any of my engines.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Not sure why they would tell you to run it till it dies. Motor is gutless with a blown head gasket. Wonder if they were banking on selling you a new mower or just a replacement engine. I bought mine second hand…fingers cross this year is first one without a mechanical breakdown. I’m confident I have written all the wrongs and it will be a stellar mower for sure! I will post a today’s cut on my community page. I run reg gas with Seafoam In it! Nice video. New subscriber. May i ask where is the video of the symptoms of this bad gasket, i had mine for a momth and i thoughtbitnwas fuel filter due to it not remaing full, .my sym was power decrease with blades engaged and not engaged and reving sound like someone is doing a car, and putt putt putt sound. I just took it bad and ordered a new one
I had PUT PUT while running. I bought this used and always thought it lacked power due to engine size. A fellow subscriber and friend Mark @twistedvtwingarage told me the headgasket was blown. He was right! Noticed a significant improvement in power. This year I swapped a 223Cc Motor and run Ripper Blades and it’s a whole new mower!
When putting air filter assembly to carburetor. I didn't see you put a gasket in-between when putting together. My lawnmower was leaking gas through that union. The gasket was torn up when i took the filter assembly off to get to carburator. What did you use or did you use a gasket at all?
That’s because the gasket was stuck to the AIr Filter base. Gas shouldn’t be coming coming out the carb into the air filter base. You most likely have a bad carb but can try cleaning it and servicing it.
great fix my man little tip if you put any kind of writing paper will work in between the socket and bolt holds it right in place like a charm hopefully this helps someone take care

@pattayperformance remember my 9th grade auto shop class, we learned everything about a engine from working with a Briggs and Stratton engine for the school year. The basic idea of the engine to tear down. There was 2 students per engine, we had test, on the engine, tear down test, trouble shooting, my auto shop teacher told us if you under stand this engine and how it works and troubleshoot to get it started, you will be ready to work on car engines, this was back in early 1970. It still holds true what I learned then and today
Where is the video that you said is in the description and shows your symptoms? I want to make sure this is the same issue I’m having! When the blades are engaged and I spin them by hand, they tighten up every few rotations and I hear a hissing/horn noise like air is escaping hear the head
It’s in one of my mowing videos… You hear the motor hissing as I’m cutting grass. Based on what you are telling me, you need a headgasket. Happy Valentine’s Day 🤙🏻🔧🦅🇺🇸
@@pattayperformance Thank you! So a blown head gasket can cause my blades to spin roughly every few rotations like that? If the blade drive belt is not engaged, they spin smoothly (testing by hand with motor off).

@@pattayperformance Mine is attached to the metal piece where the governor spring is. The other wire is attached to the coil. We checked for continuity and voltimeter says all connected. Still the stop switch wont shut engine down. Thoughts?
well I just replaces my headgasket following your instructions and just my luck… now my mower wont turn/ start, the pull cord wont reset when its on the flywheel ughhh Im just taking it to a shop, Im over it lol
It it just your luck…there is no reason why it shouldn’t retract. Have you tried starting it with your Electric start since recoil is giving you issues. It’s just 3 nuts…there was no need to remove the studs that the nuts go onto.
@@pattayperformance unfortunately mine doesnt have electric start… I didnt remove the studs, only the nuts, which is why it makes zero sense that it locked up on me. I double check my the push rods and everything was put back in place properly… not sure what else could have caused it to lock up
If you use a piece of paper/plastic between the socket and bolt, it acts as a wedge. And holds the bolt in enough for you to thread it in. I once used a leaf in a socket to put a small bolt in a hole, that was in the back of a compact engine, that I could barely see with my finger.
🤣🤣🤣 One day on a Road Call at a Hospital a liftgate line exploded and was leaking hydraulic fluid in excess. The liftgate wasn’t able close. I tried everything to stop bleeding but all failed. Last resort was a HUGE Leaf off an elephant plant! I wrapped the leaf around the break. Then wrapped tape over the leaf. Those put a piece of heater hose over it...then clamped it! Still leaked but good enough to close the gate and get it back to the shop. Save them an expensive tow!
@@Jeffroson78 If I could thread it on with my hand. I wouldn’t need to use this method. Come on. But really. I do this b/c I can’t reach the hole and I can’t see it. It’s like trying to grab a tool that fell into an engine bay and you can’t seem to reach it b/c there is to many things in the way. But when you explain it to others. And they think”Just ran it with your hand. It’s not that hard”
Great video, really good info on a head gasket change. Thank you for the shout out. Next time try putting a little piece of paper towel between the socket and bolt head to hold it. If you really want to upgrade the engine get with Twisted Vtwin garage..he can hook you up with some real power.
Thanks for the response, I’m currently at work and will get the info you need later tonight when I eventually return home. You need Head gasket Exhaust gasket and anything else?
Head bolts are 220lb/in not 140lb/in Also you should use a feeler gauge to check you intake and exhaust valves... intake is .003-.005 and exhaust is .005-.007
Oh a tip.... Don't use that type of fuel filter, thats for a fuel pump type carb, use a regular gravity feed fuel filter, it will run much better, with that kind of filter that could starve the carb for fuel, just a heads up.

Pattays Performance. I have encountered several Briggs & Stratton engines over the years that had really loose head bolts. In most instances, I always tightened the loose head bolts up and usually never had any further issues. From my personal experience, I think that your blown cylinder head gasket was probably caused by the loose head bolts allowing compression blow by which burned a weak spot in the gasket causing the failure. The engine sounds now like it should.Do you think that I am on the right track or one rocker short of a rocking chair? You know, I may invest in a battery powered ratchet like yours. Is that a Milwaukee Fuel? Always Enjoy Your Videos. Best Regards From Central Kentucky.
IronDuke502, I’ve only encountered loose headboard once on a Forest Gump Style Rider. I don’t work on Riders due to lack of space. These engines are prone to blown HG, I doubt that the loose bolt was a factor. From what I read online, they say the small diameter of the head bolts is the main culprit of why they blow so frequently. Only one head bolt was loose, so I’m not to sure. There are a lot of complaints about blown head gaskets...not enough solutions. Just looking to turn the curve. Honestly if there were ARP bolts available, I would have bought em 🤣 I run the m12 series tools. This is the regular ratchet. I opted NOT for the FUEL since it has a bigger head (more torque) and would be a clearance issue. LOVE KENTUCKY! You guys have best GRASS SEED EVER! KTF31! I have your seed shipped in!
Pattays Performance. The ARP bolts are really good, No Doubt. I really hate to see Briggs & Stratton go down in quality with their engines. Maybe it would have been too much to ask for at least a “Professional Series Engine” to say the least. Funny you mentioned the “Forrest Gump” RER - I have one sitting that has the I/C 11hp B&S Engine that someone probably swapped from a 8hp B&S Engine. This mower has the 30 inch deck. Speaking of Ky, It’s truly amazing how much money that the Thoroughbred farms spend on grass seed and landscaping in general. When it comes to mowing equipment, They have only the best of the best. During the lead up to the Ky Derby, I wish that you could see all of the flowers & such at many of the larger farms. I am getting ready to retire pretty soon; So I intend to get one of the battery ratchets & probably a battery impact. I have all of the air tools that I have picked up along the way- But really like the concept of not being tied to an air hose. You would think that I may be slowing down - No Way, Jose!!! Have A Wonderful Evening.
What a nightmare the same muffler bolt turned out to be for me. Mine would not get tight because the aluminum thread was stripped out. That muffler bolt is a special shoulder bolt and has a bastard thread size. I ended up drilling and threading to next size and using thin wall stainless steel tubing with a regular bolt through it to secure the muffler. Very bad design from torro for muffler bolts.
GREAT fix to overcome you unexpected issue. I’m my experience these engines do a lot to be desired on these mowers. I will give credit when credit it due…when they are healthy they are great. Both head bolts from the spark plug side was loose tightened when on the other side was strongly tightened ( I don’t know is they get loose by the vibrations ( but then the question is why the other side bolts didn’t get loose ) or our engines are assembled by the same guy :)
The head gasket was blown out on exactly the same place . Plugged the exhaust port and when rotated the flywheel manually was very easy to locate strong
air blowing close to the exhaust port , but not from the port since it was plugged. And my gas tank cap fail as yours as well :)
The same thing ( with head bolts loose tightened) here ua-cam.com/video/1ygvX1ob1fQ/v-deo.html after the 9th minute .
Never had this issue with Honda, too bad very few companies make a 30'' easy to store walk behind.

how did you make out?
@@pattayperformance it wasn’t the head gasket. I am going to have to look at doing a valve adjustment on a flat head.
I have been busy fixing other things and this got pushed to the back of the list. It seems just as I sell a few and get down to only a few left more show up. I picked up 2 mowes for free by somebody who didn’t know what they were doing and tried to fix it themselves well let’s just say that Kohler is parts now . The other a troybilt one he hydrolocked. By putting over
1 qt of oil in it. . That was messy to fix but easy. I found it had a broken blade adaptor but blade wasn’t bent . Shaft may be slightly bent. But not by much. I replaced adapter with a used one I had
So far I have sold 16 this season and have another sale scheduled in a few days. I haven’t had to haggle as much about the prices which I increased due to market conditions and inflation.

If you use a piece of paper/plastic between the socket and bolt, it acts as a wedge. And holds the bolt in enough for you to thread it in.
I once used a leaf in a socket to put a small bolt in a hole, that was in the back of a compact engine, that I could barely see with my finger.
🤣🤣🤣
One day on a Road Call at a Hospital a liftgate line exploded and was leaking hydraulic fluid in excess.
No need to do all that there's only four head bolts starting with your hand and then torque them down come on
@@Jeffroson78 If I could thread it on with my hand.

Head bolts are 220lb/in not 140lb/in
Also you should use a feeler gauge to check you intake and exhaust valves... intake is .003-.005 and exhaust is .005-.007
Oh a tip.... Don't use that type of fuel filter, thats for a fuel pump type carb, use a regular gravity feed fuel filter, it will run much better, with that kind of filter that could starve the carb for fuel, just a heads up.

@@pattayperformance It will yield an oil burning issue
IronDuke502,
I’ve only encountered loose headboard once on a Forest Gump Style Rider.
Honestly if there were ARP bolts available, I would have bought em 🤣
I run the m12 series tools.
