I read these when I ever I need to remind myself how much I suck at drawing buildings.
Ottomo's draftsmanship is so amazing!
I got the Barnes and Noble hardcover when i was in middle school and didn't find out about the other 5 volumes until years later. I waited years for the second volume to come out only to find out that it had been out for years.
Laughed out loud!
@@user-gz4lq2dq7f who actually types out lol
@@tobyokafor6069 not me, I just wanted to put emphasis on the lol. A lot of times I'll place an lol with a straight face. But maybe this read had actually made me laugh out loud.
Wow I had no idea those color version were so high. Actually found number 34 at a Half Price Books the other week for only $2, guess I really lucked out on that.
They don't make colored Akira Comics mangas anymore?
@@Reactionary_Harkonnen that i know of, they don’t
I really appreciate all you info on one of my most inspired stories. I was at San Diego Comic Con 1988 and meet the creators of this beautiful format. I’m an artist so you know I had a million questions for Steve Oliff. Had my issues 1 - 4 signed by him. I say he is one of the pioneers using computer coloring. Unfortunately I’m having to move and I need to pass these gems to someone who’d appreciate them. As of all my collection.
Thanks again.
Great video! Personally, I certainly prefer the colored edition - it's gorgeous and I've been in love with this version ever since I first saw it in a bookshop when I was 12 years old and when owning all of these volumes (or rather, their 20 German equivalents as I'm German) was only a dream... Especially the last part of the story is so mind-blowing and almost psychedelic when you see it in full color. Steve Oliff did an amazing job (and Katsuhiro Otomo approved of each individual colored page), so even though the original was in b/w, I think the "Westernized" version is a masterpiece in its own right.
Thank you for making this video!
I almost bought the black & white collection,
even though I really love the colored editions I've seen online.
You were really interesting to listen to!
That's a beautiful collection.
33 down 5 to go. Can't wait till I have the whole set!
I'll never part with my Mushroom press colored collection. It took me 15 years to find them all in the days before and after Ebay.
Dang, thank you! This video was great and exactly what I was looking for! I like the original black and white but I love those single issue square spine with the color covers.
Digital coloring is by Steve Oliff of Olyoptics. He is also one of the pioneers of digital comic book coloring and did a good job with the various Image titles.
Oh :O the Scandinavian versions have the same colors! That blows my mind usually, European publishers like to do their own thing xD
@@NPC-jt3gp Well I have the danish version, and I'm not particularly fond of the translation...
I'm going to get Akira Volume by Volume.
Bought the complete epic comics run for $150 in Hawaii last year. Best way to read it.
+Julio C. Rodriguez That's a great deal!
I have this collection plus the Spanish too, now I'm thinking of buying the new Box set too
Thank you, excellent review and advice to try and get the US versions of the Akira graphic novels.
It's nearly 2022, your 1-38 is now worth in and around $1000, depending on condition the #38 is worth $350-$800, the graphiti design books are now selling for $1250 EACH, your Barnes and Nobel hardback is selling for $75. Good day sir. P.s the box set came out and it's amazing. Again, good day sir.
I love the update. I’m actually mid way through collecting all 38. Issues 1,5 and 38 are currently the most expensive.
@@OGMAAL friend of mine has assembled and sold 20 (yes twenty) 1-38 epic sets! His last one sold for 1800 USD! I assembled mine for about £300 a few years ago, bought #38 from Japan for £40!!!!!
@@tubeyoutubetubyoutube3100 WOW! I think its going to take me $300-$400 to complete the whole set. I’ve found a few set with 3 issues for $9-$15. So far I’ve spent $50 for but issues #1 and #38 are high dollar. Any places you suggest looking besides comic shops and ebay?
Doesn’t matter which you pick. They’re all literally godlike. Even the bootleg poorly dubbed VHS copies are godlike
I'm so happy I picked up the 35th anniversary box set last year right before the prices went sky high. That being said, the color in this release is INCREDIBLE and I kind of want to go back and get all of these. I only have the first issue.
Maybe some day Kodansha will put out the unflipped edition now that they have the rights.
+Samuel Trejo It's supposed to come out next year!
DUDE, you are killing it with all of these videos. I love how often you're posting and the variety. Akira isn't something that interests me a ton, but I am still going to enjoy the video. Do you think you could do an overview of the Orion Omnibus? I've been very curious about it. Even if you hadn't read it yet, you could just show some of the artwork, the build quality, talk about Simonson a bit, etc.
I just received the 35th anniversary box set. Lovely hardcovers. I don't think I would ever have the patience to collect anything in issues. Always hardcovers or trade paperbacks for me.
This was enormously helpful, cheers bro!!
Would love to see something on Grant Morrison's run on batman now that you've got those two absolutes!
I'm a new viewer and I love your content!
Akira needs to be re-released (remastered quality wise) in a new 6 volume phone book style set but in its original colour version though!
P.S. Original colour version far as the US release is concerned. i.e. re-release the coloured U.S. versions of the series.
Agreed. In Scandinavia, it's still pretty widely available in the original color version - which is the same as the US I believe. However, only 18 put of the 20 European volumes are available, so I had to buy the Darkhorse versions to read the bits I missed. It's very very weird to go back be forth between black and white and color O.o
Thanks for the info! I actually just dug my old Akiras out of storage and was wondering what to do with them. I have the Graphitti Designs hardcovers volumes 2, 4 and 5. Volumes 2 and 5 of the Epic Comics collected editions and volume 16, 33, 34 and 37 of the singles you show in this video. At least now I know which bits I have and how I might fill in the gaps.
Shame that Marvel didn't retain the rights to reprint these as a collected set. EPIC will never be topped.
I have the same copy of the hardcover Volume 1. It IS supposed to come with a slip cover, which has some great art on it. It's it WAS just the single volume for that release though. I got the rest of the volumes on the Dark Horse softcover. I'm debating whether to buy the first volume on the softcover or not since I already own it, it just doesn't match the rest of the series
I have the original 5 volume hard covers from around 23 years ago - shame book 6 was never released in colour, maybe ill grab the new ones for the 35th anniversary :)
Gotta catch them all!
So did you ever get the 35th year anniversary edition of akira? how does it compare to the other versions out there and what do you think of it? just ordered it myself for 130 dollars online and waiting for it!
I never did, though I've seen pictures and it is a lovely set. On my list eventually!
Nerdventures you should get it soon as they ended production last year! They wont restock it anymore afterwards!
Where can you find these Akira colored mangas/comics?
Why dispose the best version? The Epic comics version is by far the best one....speaking as someone who doesn't even own a single Akira issue by Marvel. I just have the common tpbs. I would love to get the Epic comics version, but back issues are not readily available in my country. Ebay prices are through the roof.
Has anyone any knowledge on the barcodes on the back? I have some with no bar codes, some with a standard looking barcode and then some with direct edition on a barcode? Thanks. 🙂
when did this release the English version?
There were 10epic collections printing 3 issues each. 31-38 were never collected.
I got 1-35 but didn’t know their was 3 more books thought I had the complete set :(
Ouch
What's the difference between first and second print in these books
I wish I had seen this video years ago when I twice attempted to read this series. I've never actually had the opportunity to finish reading the whole series because of the incomplete editions. I do have a question about the Darkhorse series vs the Epic series. I've heard that the in addition to the "translated sound effects" the translation to the English language also differs. From what I hear, the Darkhorse translation is superior to the Epic translation. Do you know if this is accurate? If so what is your opinion on the matter? Thanks in advance.
C Palileo I have both editions. 80% translation or more are same between them. However I really can't tell which one is superior or closer to the original Japanese edition since I don't understand Japanese language.
Do you guys know if they have fakes of these ? I want to buy copies of these but scared that I might get fakes .
And not only these . Like first editions ?
Great vid
What did you trade them for?
i got the 35th anniversary but if i could get the epic comic ones i would
damn this is awesome!!
I own the first chapter of the colorized akira
I think those look very koo in color
i found online all 9 trades of akira
damn i wish they would put out a oversized hardcover version of attack on titan( rather than the paperback version) And also hardcover versions of Dragonball.
2 years too late but check out the attack on Titan collosal edition mangas
Name of company Young
not sure if anyone else answered the question "did Barnes & Noble do more than the 1st volume?" the answer is "no." They would do that with popular collections for some odd reason. I had a hardcover version of one of the Edward Gorey collections (I believe they did 3 total with Gorey in softcover but only one hc was done by B&N). Kind of annoying but alas, now in late 2017 we have the awesome collection from Kondansha! beautiful set! -B
You sounded like Howie Mandel!
Gun_Damn_IT Maybe he is Howie Mandel himself! Lol
Kalzone lmao
I still need epic #38 :(
It’s a tough one to find!
I feel for you man! you'll be happy as hell when you get it though! I paid 50$ for 38
so I looked at other reviews online of box sets from 2012, and they are in color, have you heard or do you know for sure this year's will be black and white?
so do you know when will this year's 35universary box set come out?and will the akira club be included!!?
+Tim Glover I'm fairly sure it is in black and white, I know some photos of the set have been floating around. I'll update in another video when I know more!
I contacted Kodanshacomics. The US version will be black and white
Tim Glover I contacted Kodanshacomics. The US version will be black and white
david dave man I want it color, I already own the whole volume in b&w
Hard to watch how this guy was letting these go.
アメリカのコミック 一冊が薄っぺらいけど全頁カラーだったりするんだよね〜
