- Peter Hammill is the founding member of progressive rock giants Van der Graaf Generator. Most noted for his vocal abilities, his main instruments are guitar and piano. He also acts as a record producer for his own recordings, and occasionally for other artists. Here he shares his story with Esoteric label manager Mark Powell.

Van Der Graaf Generator are among the 10 greatest bands EVER in my book and my all time personal favourite. To say that Peter Hammill is criminally underrated as an artist is an absolute understatement. The man is BEYOND brilliant. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to him when he performed in Cleveland in 2008. Mr.Hammill is an absolute gentleman, very humble, and truly loves and cares about his fans. I hope he continues to perform and create amazing music for MANY more years to come.

I'm a bit of an old school VDGG purist (Pawn Hearts to around Pleasure Dome) but long may this new VDGG continue.

Didn't VDGG play Football with Charisma labelmates Monty Python on Tony Stratton Smith's front lawn on occasion? might've been confusing at first glance " Palin takes the ball from Hammill or does he? is it vice versa?"
I can always enjoy the way Mark Powell conducts his interviews - most unintrusive!

Peter Hamill is most definitely not noted for his vocal abilities (despite how much I do love his unique voice). He's noted for his unsurpassed creativity
What a fabulous band VDGG are. One of the few prog bands of their era, that didn't sell out, and kept true to their vision.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video, enjoyed them live this year 2022 & enjoyed the Peter Hammill solo concert for Skin 1986 at the QEH. Thought I'd missed my chance to see them live as too young (15) to go to Vital when it happened. I had not expected Guy & David to be in the 'solo' line up, possibly Hugh, can't recall if Nick was there, rest well Nick miss the bass in the trio work but still enthusiastic to hear what VDG have to offer & add my own bass lines - maybe Nick & Keith, gods rest his soul, are emotionally irreplaceable.
I bought a copy of *World Record* in a cut out bin for $2 when I was 15, and I've never looked back!

When I was 16 yrs old in 1980 I handed a heavy vinyl copy of The Least We Can Do ..by my heavy metal loving chum whom had found it amongst his older sisters’ stuff that she’d left when moving away . He guessed I’d give it a listen as my collection included Tales From Topographic Oceans , We’re Only in it for The Money and Remain in Light - and other sounds that scared the hell out of AC/DC lovers. He was correct ! 👍from Wessex

fascinating - all the variables and details we the listener have no knowledge - late night , after a drive to Newcastle recording! The fatigue! perhaps they all show in the recordings some how. Love Pawn Hearts.

je suis d'accord avec vous et j'associe King Crimson à VDGG. Je n'ai jamais vraiment compris qu'on les classe dans telle ou telle catégorie... Cette obsession normative ne correspond parfois qu'à des éléments de surface car, pour VDGG comme pour KC, il y a une violence, un sens dramatique, une intensité émotionnelle (parfois) que je ne vois nulle part ailleurs dans le "progressif"...
C'est toujours risqué de dire d'un groupe qu'il est le plus du monde. Même si vous réduisez votre propos au rock-progressif. Bizarrement, je classe VDGG dans le top cinq. Bizarrement, car avant de les avoir écouter pour la première fois (1973 avec Pawn Hearts - pas le plus facile...), je n'écoutais pas ce genre de musique. Qui était certes progressif mais loin de Yes et de Genesis pour les citer. J'y ajouterai Floyd et Tull, comme cela vous avez mon "top five".
Je pense que c'était du à la magie que Peter pouvait apporter à leur musique. Depuis, je les accompagné. Mais il faut bien dire qu'ils ont eu des hauts et des bas. Comme tous les groupes qui ont une carrière aussi longue. En cette soirée de réveillon, comme je seul je les passerai avec "ma" musique. Et, bien sûr, j'écouterai quelques "old VDGG tunes".
Van der Graf est géant ! Unique !

2009 ;) Beachland Ballroom and Tavern in Cleveland on 25 June 2009 with The Strawbs. I volunteered for the organization that brought them to the USA in 2009 and 2012. Sadly a shorter tour in 2012. Oh wait...2008 he was solo. You are correct, sir!

Great interview, but he is mistaken about VdGG releasing the first album on Charisma:- 'Rare Bird' was late '69; 'Least We Can Do' was early '70.
I think Peter meant it was VdGG's first album on Charisma. Not overall. That LP often gets forgotten -- The Aerosol Grey Machine (Sept 1969) I think it was called.
Rare Bird, however, didn't form until December 1969 so Peter may be right about VdGG as first.
The Nice was the other Charisma band but they were a little later since they were still on Immediate Records.
It was a great era.
@@lastrada52 Hi, yes Rare Bird formed then recorded their debut almost straight away; those recordings were actually *demos* for the first album but Strat basically just said "sod it this sounds fine to me" and released it as is. Catalogue numbers confirm Rare Bird came first (CAS1005) with VdGG hot on their heels (CAS1007)
@@jeffsimon9594 - I actually liked Rare Bird. I'm surprised, despite his success with Alvin Lee, that singer Steve Gould didn't become a solo artist. He had a great vocal style.
@@lastrada52 Yes and a very distinctive / identifiable vocalist too. Do you know his late '70s band Runner? Their self-titled album sounded so good (for that era) that Pink Floyd headhunted the engineer to work on The Wall and subsequently kept him on for the remainder of their career!
@@jeffsimon9594 - Have that Runner album -- some great little songs on it. Everything Steve Gould got involved with had some merit.
As you said his vocals are distinctive especially when he's singing backup and he comes on strong even in the background.
he spent more than a decade with Alvin Lee -- so Lee saw something in Gould.
