    Grew up with them since they started. My most favorite artists, miss David Jackson (sax master) here, but yes, no one explored deeper and higher than VDGG. Sublime madness in sound.

    At last. A reward for THE prog band. No compromises. Just music and innovations thru improvisation. Thanks.

    Great band. Would really like to see Jackson return. He was a huge part of what made them unique.

    White Hammer & Darkness 11/11 were ‘ Goth ‘ a whole decade before Bauhaus were credited with “ being the birth of Goth music “ It’s sad how their relationship with David Jackson broke down after so many years 🏴❤️

    It is a pity that David Jackson is not more with them. And also that Nic Potter has passed away.

    Great guys, great music (and, yes, I include Peter's solo work, which is often brilliant) and I thank fate that I was born at a point in a time where I could listen to these guys, alongside the likes of King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Zappa, Vangelis, Pink Floyd.. my favourites.. and so much else.

      you act as if you can't listen to them now! the modern day has more VdGG fans than there were in the 70s (except for in italy maybe, that was absolutely mad)

      @@kidflersh7807 I AM listening to them now, I actually only started to do so in the past 5 years or so. Yes, I am a late starter. Just listening to their BBC session, Maida Vale. Stunning.

    I love prog music and prog rock but it's ultimately really only a label that was bestowed upon these bands after the fact. Nobody back then said to themselves "hey, let's become a prog band" or "hey let's play prog music." That's why today the genre has a bit of a contrived element because many bands playing in the prog genre these days know exactly what they want to do(ie "prog")before they even do it. This is why sometimes some bands are criticized for playing "prog by numbers." VDGG were prog in attitude and label but were never a band happy to be pigeonholed or put in a box. They just did what they did and nobody else did what they did(not that they could anyway).

    I love how they convey prog as an open definition. I agree, because for me I put Dire Straits into the prog tag as well. Interesting story like lyrics, often lengthy tracks, excellent musicianship, it somehow works for me to call Knopfler and the lads prog. Some may disagree, that's alright

  • @ozricaurora6943
    @ozricaurora6943 7 років тому +6

    I agree that prog isnt really a genre, it's more an attitude to music and a way of making it. so I wouldn't say the Beatles or the stones fall under that category. they were too much about the fame and girls. prog is an underground genre. while Pink Floyd were huge, their attitude and style had that essence of what made prog what it was.

    • @ulfingvar1
      @ulfingvar1 7 років тому +1

      And who was more prog than Zappa? He tried to fuse the most disparate genres, and usually succeeded!! R n' B with Edgar Varése, for goodness sake!!!

    • @vdggmouse9512
      @vdggmouse9512 5 років тому +1

      @Harold de Mure If pop to you means popular. I agree with Guy - The Beatles and others paved the way to there being a 'prog.' The Beatles definitely had that prog attitude more than The Stones. Did The Stones come anywhere near an Abbey Road medley? Don't think so. VdGG the second greatest band --- EVER!
