Wonderful song. Sturdy enough to be played in several styles. I notice Liam can manage to grow a beard better than his father ever could. If he can match him in the songwriting skills we're in heaven.
A great performance, I love this song and the band! It's unbelievable the arrangements they do every time they play it! Marcelo Silva from São Paulo - Brazil.
Thank you ChizelMonkee - these are superb. To GKFC, there is no auto-tune on any of these clips, what you're hearing is an occasional glitch on the main vocal - probably from a compressor or reverb unit in the signal chain.Definitely NOT auto-tune.
My Dream 80's concert: 1. Crowed House 2. U-2 3. Men w/o Hats 4. Tears for Fears 5/ Tom Petty 6. Depeche Mode 7. Cory Feldmon 8. The Cure 9. The Bugaloos 10 . Talking Heads
Does anyone else feel like this song just doesn't quite hit the soul the same way as when the (i think) Hammond organ with the Leslie speakers was included in the arrangement? I miss it. Beautiful, timeless tune just the same.
It's safe to say that IF auto tune was used here it was done AFTER the performance, specifically for the broadcast by the TV people. Definitely not a real time effect used by crowded house and their crew.
To be perfectly frank, there is a harmonizer being used, and said harmonies follow the key the song is in, so yeah, there is a bit of pitch-correction going on.
Like this rendition, especially the addition of "All I Have to Do Is Dream" at the end. Just a shame all their vocals have such blatant Auto-Tune on them though...
@GKFC I'm more than familiar with autotune,in fact it's one of my pet peeves.I hear it on just about every recording these days. I just don't hear it here. I could be wrong, of course - but why would a band this talented even consider using it? There are many clips of Crowded house on you tube that were shot before autotune was even invented [1997]. And they're great .They don't need it. Just my opinion.
It's more noticeable in the first chorus, then stays quite high for the rest of the song. Listen to the first "you know they won't win" especially the "you know" and you'll hear his voice being corrected during a mistake.
@GKFC Alright, a couple of things: "Even Billy Joel has used it on occasion". You mean it was used ON him, once. During the super bowl. And it was made clear that Billy was furious afterward when he found out that the producers had used it. Regarding this crowded house clip, I do hear the auto-tune sounding stuff , but I also find it odd that i doesn't catch/alter half of the "off key" notes at all.
I'm not too sure if that's auto-tune we're hearing. It sounds more like program compression artifacts, not to mention other occasional weird sounds of this sort not just on the vocals. Also, I'm thinking of it this way, if the auto-tune was in such full force to make you think you are hearing artifacts, shouldn't it have then caught the way out of pitch stuff, such as @ 3:04, for example?
So very cool. Not sure I've seen this one yet. Is that his son playing acoustic behind him? I'm pretty sure that's the original bass player from CH but not sure about the others.
How can you say definitely? Did you mix their sound for them? There are plenty of examples of Autotune in contemporary pop (not just to the extremes of T-Pain of Cher), why not here?
To GKFC O.K. Fair enough - I should have said ALMOST certainly - and to echo Seven of 7, it would have to be crappy autotuning. The whole purpose of autotune is to keep the pitching perfect, which this performance clearly isn't. [That's not to say it's no good, it's great for live, but had this been a studio take, it would not have been a keeper.]That's the difference. Even live ,autotuned vocals sound perfect, but unnatural.
Talent level has nothing to do with it here. Getting older and needing a bit of a hand to stay on pitch is the point. Even Billy Joel has used it on occasion. So it's hardly within the realms of fantasy to think at some point Crowded House have used it (i.e. in this clip). And I'm only talking about this clip... not sure why anything before 1997 would be relevant.
Disagree with you again. The sound here is unnatural at times too. Google "Auto-Tune Abuse in Pop Music 10 Examples - Hometracked" and listen to the audio track. There are several instances where the pitch still wobbles around because autotune can't quite correct it all. Like here. And I suggest you reply instead of just posting a comment. I only stumbled across your first reply because I watched the video again, I don't get a notification just because you mention my name in a comment.
One of the best groups ever...so professional and good song writers along with the Moody Blues!!
Finn Brothers. What great work. I'm left stunned from Split Enz through to the Everly Brothers tag here at the end. Brilliant. Awesome. Songsmiths.
Of all the live performances of this song, this definitely has the best musical arrangement (in my opinion!)
I love this song and this group....such talent, great job.....
The song takes off at 4:08 and I’ve been looking for this version for over 10 years. Thank you
One of the best versions I've heard of this one.......... and there's many!
Don't 'ever' let them win.....
I got the same melodica from my mother that Mark plays, also in gray and white.
Nice version of this!.....I have sung
this in karaoke..a bottle of Heineken in my hand...
One of my very favourite Aussie/New Zealand bands...."Don't Dream It's Over" ....live...😎
Great video and version. No flaws hit my ears. Don't know what the nitpickers are talking about.
Wonderful song. Sturdy enough to be played in several styles. I notice Liam can manage to grow a beard better than his father ever could. If he can match him in the songwriting skills we're in heaven.
Like the transition to Everly Brothers "Dream." Never saw it coming but it works nicely. Two classic songs in one.
Gave me chills when they went to the Everly Bros.
That's when the tears came...

I love this rendition. It should be burned to a single. Acoustic single from Crowded House.

Timeless. Brilliant "pop?" Nah. Just brilliant on many levels. Love the quality of these posts from your "UA-cam friend Down Under." Many thanks.
It's a lovely arrangement... wish Paul Hester was still around to participate!!! so sad!!
Yes. I like how the incorporated the Everly Brothers.

I have been a fan since I was 10 years old. I am now forty mumble mumble. Good NZ talent.

My Dream 80's concert:

The Smiths?
Zoro
It's not often that CH have had the luxury of 3 guitarists....Liam adds a lot to the sound.
Just listening to the Finn brothers and nothing else these days.[ check out 'edible flowers', 'only talking sense', pour le monde] amazing songs.
Very very good

Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over (cover by Ilya Naumov)

Does anyone know if the Crowded House at the the Den is on youtube yet or maybe someone might be kind enough to post it soon,
It's more noticeable in the first chorus, then stays quite high for the rest of the song.
Listen to the first "you know they won't win" especially the "you know" and you'll hear his voice being corrected during a mistake.
HEAD NOW, HEAD NOW!
Nice Maori strum, Liam :o)
That Should read "Artists Den"

HEY NOW HEY NOW
Tim isn't in this video
Smallville✌
@Nigelxman1
I'm confused...so you disagree with me? You're saying that crowded house and the crew WOULD indeed use autotune in a live setting?!
I hear no autotune. In fact, I hear Neil go a little flat a couple times, so it would have to be a pretty crappy auto-tune lol.
the guy with the beard looks like Neil's son
Crowded House don't use auto-tune. You live a sad life who ever even suggested it.
I'm not too sure if that's auto-tune we're hearing. It sounds more like program compression artifacts, not to mention other occasional weird sounds of this sort not just on the vocals. I think I'm in love with the woman at 2:51.
So very cool. Not sure I've seen this one yet. Is that his son playing acoustic behind him? I'm pretty sure that's the original bass player from CH but not sure about the others.
spencergroup Yes that's Liam in the background helping out - otherwise it's the same members.
How can you say definitely? Did you mix their sound for them?
There are plenty of examples of Autotune in contemporary pop (not just to the extremes of T-Pain of Cher), why not here?
Liam Finn with the beard.

this song needs more didgeridoo
De Selby hahahhahahahahaha
is that his oldest son, Liam, playing in the backround?
yes
@Nigelxman1
All is forgiven!:P
Not the same without Paul Hester on drums. R.I.P Paul. xx

1:54 assassination of a great song... why the stupid melodica instead of the gorgeous hammond solo? Sacrilege!
Yeah, that's pretty bad...he may as well have played a kazoo.
annoying
