Elon Musk just revealed SpaceX Wild Plans to Catch Starship Booster!
The past three Starship flights have marked significant advancements for the program. However, one crucial aspect that SpaceX has yet to accomplish successfully is the landing phase of the mission. Nevertheless, it is highly anticipated that this year, perhaps even in the coming months, SpaceX will embark on the inaugural attempts of a long-awaited method: catching the Booster using the Mechazilla Arm. This endeavor is poised to be a monumental challenge, considering it represents uncharted territory in aerospace engineering.
Elon Musk just revealed SpaceX Wild Plans to Catch Starship Booster!
So, how will the landing process with the Mechazilla Arm unfold, and what factors demand careful consideration in this pivotal task? Join us on today's episode of Great SpaceX as we delve into the intricacies of this groundbreaking endeavor and explore the key elements crucial to its success.
Elon Musk just revealed SpaceX Wild Plans to Catch Starship Booster!
In the last presentation at Starbase, Elon Musk unveiled several groundbreaking developments and ambitious plans for the future: "If the landing in the virtual tower with the booster works, then we will actually try with Flight 5 to come back and land on the tower."

The first words when man steps on Mars for the first time, "Thank You Elon Musk, you made this happen."
Yeah, great statement. I hope we can hear this as soon as possible
You mean the Moon, right? Shouldnt we go there first?
Sorry to tell you but that's impossible
@@numberone6955 nothing is impossible. but its a long, long way off for sure.
@@numberone6955 I'm sorry but what is impossible?
If anyone can get this to work, it'll be SpaceX. They learn something new with each launch and landing attempt. If this doesn't work as planned, they'll keep at it until they are successful. Go SpaceX!
Here is a thought...... call me crazy, but maybe they could work all that sh1t out before they build the thing. Not pray for technological advancement maguffins to solve every issue they didn't account for as they go. That's just faking it until you make it
@@mervstash3692
What stupid advice. That'd just cause massive delays and expense increase for nothing. There's a reason SpaceX launched more rockets than the rest of the world combined and it's their iterative approach.
How about a separate catch tower without a launch mount out of the way a little
There is a reason they are building second tower.. just in case first one explodes. They are ready to sacrifice that anyway. Part of progress.
Hopefully, everything is go smoothly
How about landing the booster at a different landing pad? One that has a tower, chopsticks, and landing pad, but which is further away with no critical launch equipment nearby? You still catch the booster, and can transport it where ever needed but do not risk launch equipment or personnel. Similar to the way Falcon 9 boosters are captured by the drone ships. No need to land it on the actual pad it launches from. At least to start with until the capture is perfected.
It doesn’t matter where u land it no matter where ur at u need a tower and a tower is years if work
@@Mrfrogboi Actually, they are building a new tower as we speak. They completed a new one in Florida. And if it only catches the booster, it will be much simpler than a full-up tower, and much easier and quicker to build. Will it be ready next week? No. But by the end of the year it could be, or even sooner. And it wouldn't necessarily be a permanent solution - just until the perfect the catch technology and prove that it is safe, effective, and repeatable.
@@darkstar7999 I geuss
I believe a separate launch and separate landing tower would be a better idea..
Cost would have been the reason, for SpaceX, not to think on this idea, but nevertheless a good one
I'm agree to you 👍
We need a tower for landing only, for now. This will prevent launch tower and pad damage. If it works just lower in on to the spmt.
Yeah, but build more tower will help increase launch frequency
I always assumed they would have a separate landing structure. If they use the launch structure and have a RUD, they destroy lots of valuable infrastructure and set back their launch schedule by many months if not a year.
Yeah, that's worth to consider
Why not just build 2 "catch towers" separate from the launch towers. This would prevent damage to launch equipment if problems occur. ?????
When your gimmick is supposedly relaunching within a few hours & claim you will do it at 0.01% of the cost of a new rocket, separate catching platforms won't work.
Yeah, I think they should build more tower
A separate catch tower is has very different requirements than the launch tower so it makes perfect sense to have a dedicated catch tower. For example, the catch tower need only be a third the height of the launch tower, endures only the center raptor exhaust for a short time not 33 raptors for a longer time, no propellent loading/unloading, no careful alignment issues of the stacking process, no quick disconnect of piping and electrical. Only bigoted naysayers would deride the possibility of a catch tower without considering the benefits. But then again, that’s why Elon is successful and his detractors make everything they control fail.
Marvelous to see almost science fictional development before our eyes. Awesome job Elon and Space X are accomplishing. While Apollo was fascinating this takes it Literally to another level. Thank you all.
Yeah, keep following our channel to support SpaceX efforts
SpaceX and Starship will go through a few more test flights before they attempt a landing capture. Elon Musk will give humans (all of Earth) a second chance by the way of a second planet (or more) place to call home. Everyone should be proud of what is happening with SpaceX.
Yeah, let's following their efforts and wait for their next feats ☺️
I don't believe it will ever happen. Because it's nuts.
Let's wait for their next feats
Idea 1 . Try a hopper flight. Launch a booster to say 10000 ft return to catch with arms.
Idea 2 try a hop with a falcon 9. Catch with arms.
Idea 3
Put some leg mechanism borrowed from Falcon 9. Land at one of the pads.
Which idea do you like the most?😂
Something No Ones talking about / mentioning is :
Given the Repercussions / shock waves / launching rocket engine blasts - which is mainly Focused on the OLM and Water Deluge Pad...
That Won't be the case with the Rocket Exhaust during capture with the Chopsticks...!??
Rocket engine back blast will be " Spraying " the area next to the OLM...!!
Just thought I'd pass that
" Heads Up " along to the SpaceX Engineers ...
In case they haven't thought about that yet..
They will never catch a booster. The idea is so absurd, only Elon Musk could have thought of it.
😂 it’s crazy isn’t it? It’s gonna awesome if it works though.
I still think that one Mechazilla tower should be to Launch, and another one to catch.
Yeah, I'm agree to you
3-2-1 boom
The animations of the booster descending onto the chopsticks are wrong. Simple physics.
The base with the Raptor engines moves laterally to guide the top, with the lifting points, onto the arms.
Think of balancing a broom vertically on one finger....
Thanks for your great comment 👍
Does anyone know the TWR of the 2nd stage after hot staging? Is it above 1?
I can see catching the Booster and the Starship tanker with the OLM from a workflow standpoint as long as there is zero ... zero ... maintenance. However, the Starship will need to have new cargo loaded which takes non-zero time. So, seems the OLM will catch the returning Starship and then immediately transfer it to a mobile transport every time for reloading cargo away from the tower. SpaceX engineering approach is to eliminate steps so ... Seems better to have a "catch-only" OLM or just engineer a mobile transport (also provides the "legs" to attach to the hard points on the Starship) to catch the Starship. I wonder if it is a center of mass decision ... the chop sticks would be closer to the center of mass of the returning Starship (or booster) ... which would reduce tip over risk.
Deploy a parachute as temporary falling till from a ground height then rockets turn on ,bottom weighted for balance
It is looking more and more like he needs a tower just for catching starship away from the tank farm one to catch one to launch 2 different setups
Can't relaunch then. That's his whole claim
SpaceX could safely eliminate lots of risk by raising the booster onto the chopsticks and then fire 3 engines to fly 10 meters up, then land on the chopsticks. This would reveal potential problems including control, touchdown speeds. Amount of propellent required for landing, consequence of landing with excess propellent weight on safe touchdown velocity, potential damage to booster and chopsticks upon inaccurate alignment or touchdown speed, stability issues of the booster swinging like a pendulum after touchdown, and other unforeseen problems.
perplexed as to why not have a separate landing tower away from all the main infrastructure until they nail the landings.... at least then they wont impact any future launches due to damage.
If SpaceX finds problems with booster landings early on, then they can incorporate necessary solutions into the 2nd tower before it is completed.
@@morph3usredpill112it's too late for that now. 3 years behind schedule, 3 huge failures and huge risk of being scrubbed from Artemis entirely if there is another 1-2 fails.
If that happens, there is nothing left for Starship besides Starlink Satellites.
It's kind of an all or nothing situation.
SpaceX can launch just the booster or just the ship and practice catching it anytime they want. License required of course.
I wonder if they are planning to feed the data from the booster to the tower and have it react in real time, as if it is catching a "virtual" booster. To see if the chopsticks move to the right position and with sufficient speed. Booster is returning to the virtual tower in the ocean, and the tower is catching the virtual image of that booster
Hi Kevin I hope all is well for You.
Does anybody remember there's a Launchtower without OLM leaning around somewhere in Florida.
Maybe thats were .. .
😯😯😯
If SpaceX atempts a booster catch landing this year they better have the "2nd" tower assembeled and ready for launches. Otherwise it will close to a year or longer before the next launch. Even if the 2nd tower is completed but the 2nd OLM is not they could possibly maybe use the 2nd tower to catch the booster
Yeah, hopefully they can build new launch tower soon
If SpaceX wanted they apply for a license and launch just a booster or just a ship to practice catching it with the tower arms.
Space x deberia de construir otra torre pero que sea especializada para atrapar el booster y no poner en riesgo toda la estructura
Perfect idea!(separate landing ring tower) Keep all destruction by misadventure to a minimum and add some stabilizing legs as well. Chopsticks are designed for stacking, not catching. Equipment misuse by adding unnecessary stress will cause component stress and fatigue or failure. A giant net would be better than attempting this variable risk. 🎉🎉
Let's wait for their plans to create a successful landing☺️
@@colonbina1 👍
I think why not use an external tubular ring that covers 360º with a ring like a full nail to use as a rigid contact point.
Great question. Keep discussing this on our channel ☺️
Good morning
Have a nice day, bro🤗
If it explodes on the site on time landing Booster, the FAA not delyaed next Starship launches?
Please, this is a wild fantasy so no pointing-out complicating factors.
Hopefully, everything will go smoothly
Special secret: they want to demolish the tower anyway
With no water deluge system for the booster catch and starship catch it will destroy that tower and OLM just like that first launch
The first tower is in need of retrofitting so SpaceX can risk destroying it as they need to disassemble parts of it to upgrade it to handle version 3 of the Starship. Tower 1 will be too short and maybe more design change will happen as Starship version 3 will be heavier and maybe a larger diameter.
It won’t land with 33 engines firing
@jaslll4396 I did not know this, it makes sense thanks
@timaustin77x Yes, you are correct, but when you think about that thing landing, it's like a blowtorch heating up whatever is underneath it.
Time will tell.
landing Falcons how many times on ships at sea? ... a static target will be child's play!
I saw this lad do a backflip with his bike. He should be able to do one with a truck easy.
It’s like the shuttle, you only get one chance to nail the landing can’t go around and try again just like the space shuttle!
I still feel further developing and combining the improved Raptor engines with Falcon Heavy would have sufficed, using all this money building modular stations, lunar ferries and planetary cruisers from there on without the use of methane as fuel beyond orbit.
The logistics of moving Falcon rockets around barely outweighs the cost and time developing launch towers and larger rockets refuelling.
They could have landed on the moon already, producing oxygen & hydrogen and building a vessel for a Mars mission in earth orbit.
It would seem to be quite risky , at least during the initial attempts. Perhaps a tower with chopsticks and not the stage zero part. It would be a lot cheaper to build and operate as it would not require much in infrastructure. After some number of successful catches they could use the current tower.
👍👍👍
The precision required to land on a bobbing raft has been accomplished many times.
Ever step on a boat from a pier. Not so easy first time. They have that automated.
For this they just need wind and Earth's rotation.
Yeah, it's so challenging but I believe SpaceX can overcome this to make new glories
I don't know why SpaceX keeps wanting to catch the starship and booster using the chopsticks. Just one miss and the whole area around the launch pad along with the tower will be severely damaged and take who knows how long to repair. Looks cute to catch them- from an engineer perspective makes no sense at all.
Because they can perfect it. They will also ideally have at least 2 other launch towers as Elon said they have planned, and have you been watching how they perfected Falcon 9 landings, and side booster landings? Clearly you have not been paying attention.
@k29king1 Falcon 9 is different from Starship and have not been caught by chopsticks or have u not been paying attention to the sizes. Having 2 towers still makes no sense- would really like to see the reactions from those chopstick praises when the tower is destroyed.
The gimmick is reusability. Every Starship that needs to leave orbit will need up to 20 additional Starships to refuel it. For that to happen, they need them to launch them all in quick succession. He thinks this will allow the best chance for quick turn around with the smallest amount of damage.
I'm with you though, it can only end in disaster. That whole site will get nuked.
They still can't turn around a Falcon anywhere near the time they are talking about doing it for Starship. So it's all kind of fruitless. They can't take 2 years to refill every Starship that they want to use either.
Musk should spend more time re-designing the tiny tiny, nearly useless landing legs for the moon shot so it won't tip over like the last two landings did.
Yes, it should be spec’ed to handle a range of conditions (lateral velocity, touch down velocity, boulders 10 feet high under one or two legs, 20 degree slope. After it succeeds landing, future design could tighten the range of conditions based on experience and thereby reduce weight and complexity of future missions.
Dude go actually look at the 2 craft, look at the size of their landing legs, then come back & explain that dumb thing you just said.
If Moon shots legs are tiny, when they extend just as wide as it is tall, then WTF are those chodes sticking out the bottom of Starship? The thing is like 100 times taller than what they extend.
Why no reentry burn.? Just a landing burn. Lessons learned from Falcon 9.
Reentry burn is more suitable to describe the Ship
@@colonbina1 The last booster came down from 106 km altitude and accelerated to 4,340 km/h by 23 km altitude during re-entry, where atmospheric friction finally began to slow it down slightly as it fell deeper into the atmosphere. 106 km is space. There was a burn to slow it down after separation. It crashed because there was no burn to slow it down to subsonic before it passed through 10 km altitude.
I would love to hear from Elon how exactly the virtual tower thing is, how does it works , I would like to know how this will be simulated
Slow down, hover, splash.
You might be over thinking it.
No confidence in catching the booster. I would do legs first at least. They couldn't even get catching the fairings with a net thing right and turns out letting them land in the ocean with a parachute was the right thing to do.
Humm, The arms move too slowly.
FUNNY LANDING IDEA --->>> One way they could assure a soft landing is to land the booster, or spaceship, AT HIGH ALTITUDE, inside a grid segment of cables that will entangle on the grid fins. The cables have parachutes attached that deploy via altitude sensors. The grid of super strong nylon strap type cables is held in a horizontal plane at a high altitude target area via a plurality of Helium balloons that are position assisted by multi-prop drones. They could be maintained at high altitude space, several grids at a time almost like satellites. The chutes can be remotely detached from the cables. Instead of chutes use autogiro blades.
It would be like a dart board game where instead of throwing the darts at a target; you throw the target at the falling dart! Actually it would be a dual coordination.
Great idea 👍
@@colonbina1 Aww Thanks !
As an engineer I cannot see this whole exercise as anything much more than a publicity stunt. The hazard of catching a booster or space craft in mid-air has the effect of giving zero value to any efficiency gain. If you land, land safely nearby - why risk expensive infrastructure of the minor gain of not remounting the booster to the pad? Being able to make 10 launches a day? In a mushroom-driven Musk dream is all I can say! Musk is great at pushing the edges on some technical things because the physics allows evolution in that direction, but also giving him room to bullshit further on more spectacular claims.
You sound like a jealous person talking about a man with such vision you can't comprehend his genius! 3 years ago booster rockets were dumped in the ocean, still are by everyone other than SpaceX who lands them now with pin point accuracy and reuses each booster! Just because your pea brained mind can't fathom what MUSK WILL accomplish, move on! "As an engineer"... LMFAO Remember engineers can draw/design an asshole, but can't make it work!
There is one good reason for doing that: not dragging dead weight of legs to LEO and back.
@@COORS5766which page of the Musk Cult members handbook did you copy past that from? You lads all parrot the same dribble word for word. No different to the delusion a flat earther experiences
@@mervstash3692 Musk has accomplished everything he said he was going to do, even surpassed expectations! SpaceX has disrupted business as usual in the space industry, if they don't start doing what SpaceX is doing, file for bankruptcy! The IDIOTS at NASA spend 20X more of TAXPAYERS money per launch than Musk does! Musk's proven reuse of boosters, never thought possible is normal now and extremely efficient! The first commenter is worried about Musk/SpaceX destroying a launch pad, do you think Musk gives a rats ass about the expense of that? If it costs him $100million to repair, he will make that $$ back in interest before the repair hits the planning board! Love how so called engineers that DO NOT work for him are jealous of his progress and his get it done no matter the cost attitude! He is an engineers dream to work for, but some engineers lack vision and BALLS, hence sitting home on their laptop complaining about Musk!
Elon is making a mistake
“Land” it at sea AT LEAST twice before trying to catch it for real.
They succeed with Falcon rockets, so they can do this with Starship
No real point to catching a booster until they fly one they want to re-fly. No point blowing up the tower.
Why don't the grid fins on the booster tilt vertically as well as horizontally to create drag with Pitch, Roll & Yaw control?
Like on falcon 9 but with upward drag tilt.
Come to Jesus as Temp is rising first & CO2 follows. Cause & effect on a closed CO2 loop planet that is spinning faster.
