@Josh Burton I can attest to that with real world experience. I lived alone and I heard someone screwing with the window next to my door. I either was too quiet because I had just woken up, but they did not respond to my verbal warning. I racked my shotgun and they ran like hell.
Some tourists are so annoying. I was at the White House and this small group kept crossing over the chain in front of the fence to get a photo. Like getting 3 feet closer makes a difference. A Secret Service Agent kept telling them to get away from the fence and they ignored him. Later, I was at The Tomb of the Unknown and a group was talking loud and laughing. The guard did a facing movement and yelled something to the affect this is a sacred place and to show some respect.
Ed Ocasio it’s a general memorial to all those men and women who have fallen in the line of duty, and especially those who’s names were lost and were never identified
The monument has three unidentified soldiers who were killed in action. One from WW1, one from WW2, another from the Korean War, and an empty crypt for the Viet Nam War. Previously, there was also a Viet Nam soldier but he was later identified through DNA in 1998 and no soldier was ever interred in his place. Each soldier was also posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor as representatives for sacrifices all of the unidentified dead from each war made. The three marble slabs on the ground in front of the Guards are the crypts for the WW2, Korean, and Viet Nam soldiers. The WW1 soldier lies underneath the sarcophagus. Upon the sarcophagus is written "Here rests in Honored Glory an American Soldier known but to God."
My grandpa would tell a story of one time this hippie (In the 60s) tried to throw paint on it... needless to say he was unsuccessful and got his jaw broken with the butt of a rifle
The 3rd US Infantry is comprised of the best of the US Army. Out of all the 3rd Infantry only a few have ever have a chance of even trying to become a Tomb Guard. Statistically there have been more 4 star generals than Tomb Guards! These guys go through the same rigorous inspection at 3am when no one is around as they do when the public sees them. Had a soldier ETS'ing pn my second to the last day, that had been never given proper treatment and the military staff at every post said he needed to wait to get settled and wait his turn to get his accretions removed. Think Bubba from Forest Gump. Asked him if he could stand four hours to change his life forever before he went home. He said, yes Sir if you can take doing it I can take whatever you need to do to get me looking normal, like you say I can be... I trust you based on what everyone is saying on this Post about you. We dug and dug and after my arm was worn out and the debris had been cleared, he looked in the mirror and smiled like I had never seen a patient do before. The Majors, First Sergeants and Light Colonels that ruled with iron fists for fake readiness numbers and supplier kick backs... not so much.
My wife and I took our 12 year old granddaughter to Arlington to see the changing of the guard. It was our last stop that day and we were tired. I did not notice that my granddaughter had sat down on the steps while the ceremony was in progress. Somehow, in his peripheral vision, he saw her sitting - he never looked over. Then he barked loudly without changing his movements, "you must stand during this presentation". My granddaughter was the only one sitting so I was sure his comment was directed to her. I don't think my granddaughter understood the seriousness of this ceremony. She does now.
Now See... He could have come over, knelt down and softly told her to stand. A Karen (I am sure your grand daughter is not a Karen.) But a Karen would have argued with the guard, and asked to see his manager. But as embarrassing as hearing that Military Command Voice is when it is directed at you...It gets your attention...You don't argue...You immediately obey...And you will never forget it. And, as you said, you suddenly realize the seriousness of the ceremony. It is a TEACHABLE moment.
@@mark9531 what would a nasty woopie Goldberg gueto grandma have done? She would have called “Jamal” for a little drive be shooting ? And then say: “he dindunufin!” When the police shoots his ass for being a criminal?
Mark9531 You ask the unreasonable. A 12 year old either knows better or she's not predictable. Soft talk is for weak parents who want to teach respectful behavior without enforcing it. That's not a guard's job. Not a cop's job, either. Society's notion that law enforcement authority figures should also be parenting these kids is the problem. Parents need to do the damn job if for no other reason than their kid might get tuned up by a cop or a guard like this for failure to follow simple instructions. She was given instructions on those grounds before that moment. Failed to honor those instructions due to her own lack of discipline. And she learned that day. I bet she never forgets. How she responds to that lesson is a reflection of her own character.
True....even when the elected officials gave them permission to take cover and safety. Old guard continued those '21 Steps and 21 second pauses'. Glad you're one of the very few who see the details these Sentinels do rather than argue about if there was a round chambered, single loading the rifle, no magazine, illegal use of the bayonet etc.
So glad I'm not the only one in the comments of this video who knew about that. The time I was privileged enough to watch The Changing of the Guard is something I will not forget.
The cavalier attitude and disrespect some show I will never understand. My first visit to the National Archives, I was sickened by the lack of respect a group showed while under the main rotunda, in front of our most sacred documents. If I had an m14, I would have put a round in the chamber.
They also walk 21 steps in blizzards with freezing rain and massive windchill front and heavy winds. It doesn’t matter what the weather is at the Tomb Of Unknown Soldier these men will always be out there no matter what. But I have a family member who’s buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Grandfather was a WWII vet and Medal of Honor recipient who rushed a German machine gun post and artillery battery company all by himself while his men were all hurt and dead and he was shot a lot but came out alive. You get insanely cold body chills when you are standing by all of these American hero’s grave markers knowing they made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and country. It’s also very humbling to be there.
Butt Dublin Pie no clue he passed away when I was only a few years old. We have gone back to Arlington both when I was a teenager and as a adult. But he did suffer from some serious pain and yet my dad and uncle told us that he kept it to himself and didn’t want my grandma and father and uncle to see how much pain he was in, in the years leading up to him passing away. But what’s crazy is that months before he passed away when I was only a few months old at the time my dad and a fellow Georgia State Trooper we’re both ambushed by a man who called 911 himself to lure in a police officer to try and kill a officer and then probably kill hisself or by another officer. He did a mag dump from the bushes at night on a busy Friday night and failed miserably when he missed them with every round he fired. My dad and back up trooper/friend did not miss. Then in 1994 a year later my mother a Columbus Georgia Columbus Fire Department paramedic/firefighter was shot on a domestic violence call when the domestic violence suspect and lady’s husband a Vietnam vet and 30 years in the army came out on the front porch with an AR15 and opened fire and hitting my mom 4 times while she was still seated inside her ambulance. 11 hour standoff and 8 hours of her and her young EMT partner and Columbus police officers the wife and a off duty Georgia State Trooper and Neighbour all pinned down while he shot at them for hours until SWAT could finally get to them after dude shot out all the street lights. She survived and still alive today! Sadly my father passed away back in March after loosing his battle with terminal cancer. Retired police Lieutenant and cop for 37 years. Worked as a sheriffs deputy for 2 months before they found out he had cancer and he didn’t want them to know because he wanted to continue his law enforcement career going out on his own terms a second time lol.

When going to a place like this, it's better to stand cluelessly in somewhere you know you can be, than to wander aimlessly hoping to find a good spot.
HortonKansas That would definitely ruin the experience. I went with a high school group as a chaperone. Great bunch of young people. Everyone was very respectful from the crowd also, even a group of about 100 local middle school kids. I thought for sure one of them would do something disrespectful, but they went completely silent for the duration. I was very impressed with these young people. Gives me some hope for our future.
I remember going way back in high school, and of course there had to be kids that ruined it. It's infuriating to have people be so rude and disrespectful in a place that can do nothing but inspire awe and introspection. Then you get people in comments on TOTUS videos acting edgy and countering any deep or personal stories or experiences others share, with stupid, childish insults just to hear themselves talk.
The sheer amount of training and discipline it takes to even be considered for this position is extremely high. The patience and due diligence This man just displayed is far beyond the scope of almost all people. I highly doubt that I could even make the cut to even be considered to be a guard at the tomb of the unknown solider. To the people who gave this video a thumbs down is just a sign of the total ignorance they have of the Society of the Honor Guard. May this soldier not have to ever chamber a round again. @Ed Ocasio I believe there's currently like three bodies of soldiers that have never been identified in that tomb
@Joe Some have been. I'm pretty sure they add more unknowns ti it as they are identified.
It's not a public show ...it's a perpetual 21 gun salute 24/7 365 days a year and pays respect to all those who didn't come home.. Sad that a selfie supersedes the sanctity!

Don't mess with the old guard.

Everywhere in Arlington, people are talking, having fun, learning new things , hearing stories, except for the tomb of the unknown soldier which seems to have a silent bubble around it. Its awe inspiring to hear the silence with the bustling city in the background.
This is mostly ceremonial, but we often forget, these sentinels have a mission to guard the tomb first, ceremony second.
Actually, ceremony first, the ceremonial aspect is actually the main point of it, to show respect, the guards duty is to yell at anyone who is too loud or steps past the limits, the actual 'guarding' is done by civilian police
@@vermillion8521 soooooo given the fact there was no civilian police what so ever to tell the person where to go ..you don't think that chambered round meant anything and wouldn't be used? I guess test it. Let us know

It is the Tomb's guard's job to tell the people who come to close to step back, but if they continue causing trouble, they are arrested by the police. That's what I said, the sentinel might not get him, but pissed off Americans, an both sides of the aisle , would be more than happy to teach him some respect.
That happens so often. Lots of foreigners visit the cemetery daily and don't understand anything about the Tomb. The Sentinels snap to "port arms" and won't actually do anything aggressive. The bayonets aren't even sharp.

hate to tell you but even if "tested" he can't use that bayonet, the laws of the US don't just disappear because he has military authority. frank smith under normal circumstances yes. But Arlington and the tomb of the unknown soldier are government property. If the person does not cooperate, then they are trespassing. The guard will forcefully remove them, although the bayonet is a last resort option. Those guys are extremely well trained and strong, and will make you regret not following their commands.
