  • We relaunch Pickled Herring at the boatyard in Malta. I get to try the new sails for the first time and they’re amazing. I sail halfway around the country to anchorages in Camino and Gozo.

    Sam, the wiggling indicates a misaligned shaft. You’ll want to leave the shaft attached to coupling, pull coupling from trans and adjust the motor mounts to align the two faces perfectly. If not you risk dropping the shaft (happened to me on my CD33) or damage to transmission.

    • @samholmessailing
      @samholmessailing  11 місяців тому +79

      thanks for the feedback. Here’s some more info to get up to date. the alignment was off so I realigned the motor in greece while underway and it ran great for a few hours but then the vibrations came back and the alignment was off again. When I spin the shaft disconnected from the motor the shaft spins true from what I can observe so I think the motor mounts (pretty much disintegrated) are the first thing to change. They dont seem to be able to maintain alignment if thats a thing. I’ll try to swap the motor mounts in Venice. I appreciate any suggestions though because I don’t really know what I’m doing. In the meantime I’ll continue using the engine only sparingly until I know it’s running true.

      Same, but for me it was Uma that got me started. I always thought sailing was for rich people, had no idea you could get a boat for so little. Had I known I would have sailed around the world years ago. Where I live hardly anyone sails, boats everywhere but they have motors. Just didn't have any exposure to them, any time I did see a sailboat it was really expensive and owned by rich people.

    Because of you I’ve quit my job on a farm and decided to get back to sailing. Tomorrow I go to look at a compass 29 here in Australia, with the plan to sail around the country and then sail her back to my home country, Scotland. In fact, Findhorn marina is where I got my first job on the water, you would have sailed past it on your Inverness to Lossiemouth trip, I have done that exact sail a number of times myself. Thank you for changing my life Sam!

    @samholmessailing. Sam, I’m a pilot with a Cessna 182. We recently overhauled or engine and prop. One of the first things we did was to get the prop balanced. They put tiny weights in just the right place to reduce vibration. For airplane owners, this is one of the best things we can do to make everything last longer. I hope there are similar places to go for balancing for those with boats.

    Keep an eye on the slightly bent shaft. It might do a couple of things... cause the cutlass bearing to wear excessively, cause the transmission seal to wear faster including the engine mounts. But on the other hand, having worked on boats for over twenty years, sometimes I have seen it do very little...

  • @FlyingScot
    @FlyingScot 11 місяців тому +9

    Hey Sam, just watching the vibration of your engine after the new prop was installed. That doesn't look right. Did you get the shaft checked for being slightly bent after you bent the prop? Even a slight bend can cause vibrations. You may be able to check the runout using a set of calipers along the shaft to double check. Cheers mate!

    • @samholmessailing
      @samholmessailing  11 місяців тому +15

      Yes that has been really bothering me. They did find some bend in the shaft but it was at the end and the said they machined it out when they redid the taper. It appears the shaft is straight now. I realigned the motor in the water myself later in greece and it was running way smoother but then it started vibrating again after a few hours. I think my motor mounts might be shot, they look horrible.

      @mgevirtz 11 місяців тому

      Sam, FWIW, i agree with Shanep. That vibration looks bad. When you had the motor off and you filmed the motion it looked like either a bent shaft or a misaligned engine or both.

    • @shanep5121
      @shanep5121 11 місяців тому

      @@samholmessailing I think it makes sense to get new motor mounts. I don't want to add paranoia, but if the problem is a bent shaft, that would show up at 1k rpms, but might not be noticed at "Sam" rpms. Tying the engine down with good mounts will not fix a bent shaft issue, but put more stress on the transmission and perhaps the stuffing box. However, you might be totally right that the motor can move around to be aligned properly and bad motor mounts would let the motor get out of alignment. I don't know boats, but my knowledge comes from working on cars: drive shafts, etc.
      Have you tried taking it out of gear and increasing RPMs? I do not know if that would demonstrate bad mounts or not, but if you get the shakes when she's out of gear, it directs your attention from the shaft.

I just recently watched someone adjust the height on theirs, and it was fairly straight forward (drilled out rivets, held the boom at the new desired height, marked out holes, pre-drilled the holes, and then mounted the boom with new rivets in the new holes). Just a thought ... then you could really see what that new sail could do!!!

    • @robertscholz4486
      @robertscholz4486 11 місяців тому

      That is a valid question, but as we are talking about 3 - 4 inches, I'm sure that the forces on the sail would be minimal -- of course lowering the boom would also be lowering the center of gravity marginally (not sure how heavy a boom Sam has on Pickle). Either way I doubt it would have a negative effect on performance the way that raising the boom would for all of the aforementioned reasons.@@221b-l3t

    Setup is certainly looking better now. Im off to get another set of feeler guages today to try and get a better alignment between flange on gearbox. Im actually a bit suss on my engine mounts also but that's another can of worms. The good thing is that the best place to align is with your boat afloat so you can do it at your leisure.

    Great camera work. It’s just an amazing part of the world. Stunning vistas everywhere you turn. Thanks Sam for your video journals… we get to see a little bit of paradise …. made possible by your lens. Places to which we viewers would have never gone.
    Sail on.🇨🇦

    Sam, as to reefing lines. Consider, if possible, running all lines back to the cockpit. That’s the arrangement that I have on my Ericson 32-3 and it makes for a very safe and quick way to reef underway.

    Shame you don’t have a flattener and Cunningham cringles in the sail you could have rigged it like a small reef. Onwards and upwards Sam. Looking forward to Greece.

    The vibration might be from a misaligned motor (after putting the shaft back in), which could be fixed by relaigning the motor (or a problem with the engine mounts that might have been exacerbated by the recent damage etc.) or it might be that the shaft was bent more than could be corrected by the machining done in Malta (in which case that wont fix it) good luck!

    Alternative to total recxut of the foot is to add a ring above your tack, would be like a ‘Cunningham). That way you can get correct tension on the luff (which will improve your windward ability), and the issue goes away as soon as you are reffed anyway. Could be a ring handsewn in, or a ring strapped on with webbing. Nice looking jib for sure.

    • @antc5010
      @antc5010 11 місяців тому

      Nuhhh! The cunningham idea would work, but it's a new sail so get the foot recut and you'll never look back with regret of having a misfitting sail. Otherwise great looking sails and new prop... though sort the engine mounts and shaft alignment ASAP.

    Don’t for get to align the engine with prop shaft as you will damage something .. I suggest you don’t ignore doing this sooner that later !!!!
