Sven is 83 and planning his next round-the-world voyage. Respect!
Yep - that's amazing.
Amazing. Wish him God speed
That’s how I want to grow old!
It’s amazing that he is still so energetic and excited to do this.
I could listen to him talk for hours.
Sven is an absolute legend and I think Sam might become a legend when he's his age, too.
I love Sam's videos. No annoying intro. No filler. Just raw sailing with a nice smile
I concur.
Being born in the 1930's... pre WW2, watching the world as it is now... I would absolutely LOVE to have a conversation with this man
When I sent a little coin to Yrvind on Paypal to help him a tiny bit, he was gracious enough to start chatting with me by email.
Yrvind is a legend. Thanks for sharing!
Sven is almost mythical in my eyes, but real at the same time lol.
@@snakeshift9172 I know right!
@@msuspartans5139 I did not mean to imply Sam isn't an impressive indidivual. We all love him :)
@@msuspartans5139 Great!
You strike the perfect balance of entertaining, teaching, and having relaxation in your videos. Always a joy to see. Cheers! Sven is the greatest guest you have in your videos. Great man. Inspiring. That Barometer is beautiful.
Sven Yrvind is a legend....Sam you're becoming a legend. Trust me. Epic episode.
I really like your “ no-nonsense” style of videos. They have great pace, lots packed in there efficiently. Always interesting.
Sven got you a premium spot. What a guy.
Eastern Sweden sure is beautiful. Sven Yrvind what a micro boat builder and sailing legend! Keep going strong ole Sven! Thanks for sharing.
Sven is a very interesting guy. He is a no joke adventurer.
Sven is legend! We can all learn a lot just from observing him.
That was a mean day from the start. Perhaps a new rule has been learned, “wind over 20, companionway stays closed, at least until the sun comes out”. You were lucky this time.
Every time you pull into a new place I’m like, “ooh I could live there.”
Pretty sad Sven won't be coming to New Zealand, was hoping to see him here. He deserves to get an honorary visa...
That barometer from Sven is so cool and a bonus of an added layer of weather info redundancy
I get the chills when I see you sail *Sweden's south coast.* The waters are more dangerous and unpredictable than you think. In the exact same area (south of Ystad) yrs ago sailing eastbound, we got squalls and big waves that came and went and came, and suddenly I was in a MOB situation where I lost my friend. Stay safe Sam.
RIP hope you meet your friend in the afterlife
Somebody here made a comment about the south coast not being more dangerous and unpredictable, but for some reason removed it. Ofc my statement is relative to all other coasts with their typical weather and sea conditions. Going around "horns", ie capes, larger islands and peninsulas, is normally rougher than a smoother coast where waves and wind has less tendencies to build, eg Cape Horn, Cape Fear, Stadt (Norway). In addition, in case of a westerly wind blowing over flat Denmark and into the Baltic, Sweden's southernmost coast doesn't have islands and an archipelago that can "dampen" the fury. The situation is a magnitude better up both the west and east coasts where it's much easier to seek shelter in case it gets rough.
@@Xenibalt Thx
Thanks for sharing, Jag beklagar sorgen, sorry for your lost, Agree, my first baptism of fire with squalls and big waves , on a day trip on my way to the island Ven
Hei Sam, a tip: take the rope twice around the ring and you'll avoid the chafe. Thanks for all your nice episodes! Greetings from a sailor in Norway
Yrving and Sam are legends 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I just love how they both are happy to see eachother :D I can see Sam following Sven's steps.... Sam.....we need to see your plans on building a boat....
forget that... get one of those bomb proof boats from that other old builder dude
Someday there will be this young sailor going to see his friend Sam, to see where his next adventure will take him..........
Great episode. Lessons learnt about dock line chafe. (Nylon best for dock lines).Being prepared for sudden squalls. And meeting up with The incredible Sven Yrvind.
21:57 it is a dream to one day be able to build a boat in a basement. Subscribed to his channel. Thank you. 🙏
sven is just fantastic to have just so much appetite for adventure. i so wish if i reach his age i would be the same. absoultely fantastic. looks like your made in the same mould respect to you.
Sven is a legend, the definition of a wise old man. Old in body but most definitely not in mind or spirit. He is a true gem of a human. Your not bad either Sam :)
Yes. Haven’t even watched it yet but sat in my hotel a bit bored and see a 30 minute SHS video. Happy days.
Fun fact. The slottsholmen hotel right next to the Marina is owned by Björn from ABBA. I was there a couple of weeks ago and he walked by me on the streets.
Also, of course you should do what ever you want but traditionally, in Sweden, the barometer is placed on the bulkhead in front of the saloon. I guess it’s because you can keep an eye on it when you are sitting in the cockpit.
Bravo Mr. Sven...live long and happy
I enjoyed hearing Yrvind talk about "On the Beach" by Nevil Shute. I first read the book in the mid 1960s and loved it. I also liked "Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank. Both great books and worth getting a copy and reading them. Thanks, I really enjoy your sailing channel.
Thanks for writing those down, looking forward to reading them. So glad Sam gave Yrvind a good amount of screen time, he was very interesting.
@@L1mJahey Yes, and when you have read the books, check out the movie "On the Beach" with Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Fred Astaire. Watching the USS Sawfish leave Australia for the last time, with "Waltzing Matilda" playing, is a very emotional scene. Sam has a very good sailing channel and I always enjoy hearing him interview Sven.
Great video, Sam. Very interesting information, including where we have to go to in case of a nuclear war. 👍
Love the respect that you and Sven showed each other. The calmness exuding from the two of you was extraordinary.
Another perfectly inspiring video Sam. Thank you!
Best episode ever!
Enjoyed listening to Yrvind. Excellent.
Thanks Sam for another amazing video, and I love seeing you having such a great visit with Sven..two legends together 👍👍👏👏⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️😊
Thank you Sam. The old guy sounds very wise. Stay safe
Very interesting hearing what Sven was saying. Thanks for a good video Sam and God bless
just checked out Svens channel and he has a picture of himself as a young man like Sam as his avatar. you can still see this young man when Sven talks about his adventures.
We enjoyed the equipment and systems details as you work on boat maintenance. Thank you!
Soooo awesome u keep up with Sven! And that’s an incredible gift he gave u! We have a barometer handed down from generation to generation 🤗
Another awesome vid Sam! Looking at Sven is like seeing into the future of your life I think. That’s no bad thing, he is a true legend! You’re both awesome! 👍
Bravo Sam. Nice job as usual!
Thanks!
Awesome video Sam! Looks like you are having a fair amount of fun and some fantastic experiences.
Sven is such a badass!
Nice surprise!
Keep rocking waves young man's! Take care, both!
Sven is such a nice humble man. I didn't got to meet him yet... maybe one day. But I'm sure he has so much to talk about that you could stay and listen all day long. And so inventive that he always seem to find a solution to everything... and puts a lot of attention in little details. Happy you get to hand out with him.
Glad I came across you, and Sven now because of you. Happy sailing to you and the Pickled Herring ⛵
Be careful, bro. Too many sailors have been thrown overboard when they weren't prepared for it. (No life jacket or harness when that unsuspecting squall or gusts hit.) Lucky this time, but it will catch up with you. Heed the warning. And don't use the stove when you're tired.
Svens is a cool dude, i found his site and donated, i really hope he gets that boat finished soon!
Please provide a link to his site :)
Amazing sailor in such small craft all the best.
Sven is the coolest.
Sam, Glad to see you on the water again.
Always enjoy your videos. Thanks again. From my hill top in Sc.
Sam, you are doing great. Just excellent see a different side of Sven.
So crazy, my dad is one year older than Sven and in pretty bad shape... What a legend
Beautiful!
Great video, thanks 👍
Sven! Wonderful.
Thanks Sam
Awesome video Sam. Good job.
Nice to see Sven again, I always seem to learn something very deep from him! Traveling by trades, routing and build techniques all in one! So cool, what a treasure to have an old brass barometer, perhaps you could get an embedded computer with camera to watch it and record it's output for daily summary and warnings on impending squall... Could help you avoid a blow down.... Does your mast cam monitor take HDMI input, if so an HDMI switch and raspi pi system would do the job. Might be nice to log all the boat motion, engine temp, water temp, mag bearings, .... as well. Lot's of inexpensive sensors are now available, + NEMA tap to log NEMA messages GPS/traffic/...
Yes, love ur vids sam
You Da best Sam !!
Can't wait to see Yrvind double Cape Horn in that new boat. Hopefully he'll post video of his travels as he can.
Nice trip. Wow, yes, knock down. (Or blow down). Did that off of San Francisco once. And Albergs are tender initially but great ultimately. So took some wind to do that. Yes, Svend and nothing short of AMAZING! And he is doing this huge voyage in his tiny home built boat and he must be in his mid eighties! What! Thanks for the link, will follow him.
Absolutely adore your videos Sam, it's like hanging out with a friend I've never met :D All the best from the UK! x
Thanks for the video Sam. Enjoy your content. Guaranteed like! Would love longer videos if possible, but I'll still watch no matter what. Happy and Safe sailing. Cheers.
Sam........the American 'Viking' ~ Another outstanding vid, thanks man !
I wouldn't trust that biltema stuff to much, some leghts of rope break quite fast, others I still use. It's behaving very inconsistent... keep another set around if it is vital!
-hursomhelst, great you and yrvind had the opportunity to meet up again♡♡♡
Sven is an interesting man. I bet he has stories to tell. Amazing, I'm definitely going to check out his channel.✌️
Two legends in one’!
My former playground! Nice to see it again!
i can't hold it in any longer. this guy is the mrbeast of sailing.
Looks like the Baltic have you a nice welcome. Brisk and lumpy seas. Fair winds on the rest.
Couple exceptional people hangin out
Great! We saw your boat a few days ago in Nynashamn! Blessings 🙏👍🙂⛵
Wire cables in the mast drove me crazy on my tiny Georgian 23. I drilled a hole in the mast and sprayed foam in which helped. Well my dad did it actually- yay dads!
Great sailing footage here, enjoyed it.
You inspired me to get a boat of my own! It’s so cool that you’re here in Sweden. Watch out for the seam on the soft shackle. It came loose on a friends sheet. I threaded the whole sheet through the ring on the jib and then locked the soft shackle. It seems stronger even though the sheet slides a bit through the hole every time I tack.
I'm watching Yrvind in his workshop and had this epiphany: Him and Sam are cut from the same cloth.
re chafing: tie a full turn so that chafing is not in one spot; if you get a chance , find some decommissoned fire hose, canvas is very good chaffing protection.. great video, as always
From japan, best of weather for you!!!
Lovely! I sailed there just three weeks ago
greetings from your polish fan :)
That was a nice looking trimaran you passed. :)
Dude, you should buddy boat with Sven to South America! What he was saying about nuclear fallout is true, the Southern Hemisphere is very safe from it. Southern SA I think is the safest part of the Planet.
You should have a security camera running whenever you're sailing to capture footage that you miss. Seeing that squall would have been epic.
I actually did have my mast camera running but it had run out of storage. Next time!
@@samholmessailing Maybe not possible, but try to make it write over the oldest footage. This way it will keep recording forever like a dash-cam.
@@samholmessailing like survivorman les stroud says "save the gold" AKA make sure the memory cards are always filling with photoage and always have extras to swap.... and always always keep the filled ones safe and sound "save the gold"
Welcome to Scandinavia - great sailing...!
Hope you get a chance to visit Bornholm on some other trip. It is certainly worth visiting.
I got a share in two summer houses there, one of them in Gudhjem which is one of the gems of the island - a charming town with a small marina.
Let me know if you ever come to Bornholm. If I happen to be there at the same time, you can certainly get a bed and a tour around the island.
I really enjoy your channel. Seems we have quite some common interests: At least sailing and saxophone playing 🙂
Brother, you are a inspiration! You are certainly milking the tit of life!
Had to pause and timestamp at 32:14 - a suitable-for-framing Kodak moment - beautiful scene(ry).
Loving your videos Sam....gotta say the ocean scares me so I have huge respect for all you crazy buggers sailing solo around the world 😉
If you ever come to South Australia you're welcome to stay at my place...I'll even show you around Adelaide.
Happy sailing mate 😉
As an aspiring wilderness survivalist, these videos always humble me about the difference between dangers on land and dangers at sea. Bears and wolves and cougars are scary af, sure. But the open sea and the idea of sharks scares the shit out of me.
You gents have courage.! Wish his first plan wasn't spoiled by Canberra but maybe Chile will be quite fantastic. A great tour of both of your projects, indeed. (assume the diesel spill was solved). I do think a long passage tandem trip would be a very cool thing to explore. Gosh , from the north pole to nearly the south pole.
Sailing through the Strait of Magellan sounds awesome.
Great video. Try using some rubber garden hose to protect your line from chaffing while tied up to the dock for a long time.
Great videos. Being your always alone make sure you were a harness.
Sven, what a gem, hey?
Sven is my role model.
Hey buddy! I have been super busy with work and the rat race, haven't stopped by in a while, I think since you wintered the boat last winter (yikes) but I'm binging today my friend! Hope all is well! Be safe!
