You strike the perfect balance of entertaining, teaching, and having relaxation in your videos. Always a joy to see. Cheers! Sven is the greatest guest you have in your videos. Great man. Inspiring. That Barometer is beautiful.
That was a mean day from the start. Perhaps a new rule has been learned, “wind over 20, companionway stays closed, at least until the sun comes out”. You were lucky this time.
I get the chills when I see you sail *Sweden's south coast.* The waters are more dangerous and unpredictable than you think. In the exact same area (south of Ystad) yrs ago sailing eastbound, we got squalls and big waves that came and went and came, and suddenly I was in a MOB situation where I lost my friend. Stay safe Sam.
Somebody here made a comment about the south coast not being more dangerous and unpredictable, but for some reason removed it. Ofc my statement is relative to all other coasts with their typical weather and sea conditions. Going around "horns", ie capes, larger islands and peninsulas, is normally rougher than a smoother coast where waves and wind has less tendencies to build, eg Cape Horn, Cape Fear, Stadt (Norway). In addition, in case of a westerly wind blowing over flat Denmark and into the Baltic, Sweden's southernmost coast doesn't have islands and an archipelago that can "dampen" the fury. The situation is a magnitude better up both the west and east coasts where it's much easier to seek shelter in case it gets rough.
Thanks for sharing, Jag beklagar sorgen, sorry for your lost, Agree, my first baptism of fire with squalls and big waves , on a day trip on my way to the island Ven
Fun fact. The slottsholmen hotel right next to the Marina is owned by Björn from ABBA. I was there a couple of weeks ago and he walked by me on the streets. Also, of course you should do what ever you want but traditionally, in Sweden, the barometer is placed on the bulkhead in front of the saloon. I guess it’s because you can keep an eye on it when you are sitting in the cockpit.
Sven is a legend, the definition of a wise old man. Old in body but most definitely not in mind or spirit. He is a true gem of a human. Your not bad either Sam :)
I just love how they both are happy to see eachother :D I can see Sam following Sven's steps.... Sam.....we need to see your plans on building a boat....
I enjoyed hearing Yrvind talk about "On the Beach" by Nevil Shute. I first read the book in the mid 1960s and loved it. I also liked "Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank. Both great books and worth getting a copy and reading them. Thanks, I really enjoy your sailing channel.
@@L1mJahey Yes, and when you have read the books, check out the movie "On the Beach" with Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Fred Astaire. Watching the USS Sawfish leave Australia for the last time, with "Waltzing Matilda" playing, is a very emotional scene. Sam has a very good sailing channel and I always enjoy hearing him interview Sven.
Great episode. Lessons learnt about dock line chafe. (Nylon best for dock lines).Being prepared for sudden squalls. And meeting up with The incredible Sven Yrvind.
sven is just fantastic to have just so much appetite for adventure. i so wish if i reach his age i would be the same. absoultely fantastic. looks like your made in the same mould respect to you.
Sven is such a nice humble man. I didn't got to meet him yet... maybe one day. But I'm sure he has so much to talk about that you could stay and listen all day long. And so inventive that he always seem to find a solution to everything... and puts a lot of attention in little details. Happy you get to hand out with him.
Nice to see Sven again, I always seem to learn something very deep from him! Traveling by trades, routing and build techniques all in one! So cool, what a treasure to have an old brass barometer, perhaps you could get an embedded computer with camera to watch it and record it's output for daily summary and warnings on impending squall... Could help you avoid a blow down.... Does your mast cam monitor take HDMI input, if so an HDMI switch and raspi pi system would do the job. Might be nice to log all the boat motion, engine temp, water temp, mag bearings, .... as well. Lot's of inexpensive sensors are now available, + NEMA tap to log NEMA messages GPS/traffic/...
I wouldn't trust that biltema stuff to much, some leghts of rope break quite fast, others I still use. It's behaving very inconsistent... keep another set around if it is vital! -hursomhelst, great you and yrvind had the opportunity to meet up again♡♡♡
just checked out Svens channel and he has a picture of himself as a young man like Sam as his avatar. you can still see this young man when Sven talks about his adventures.
Wire cables in the mast drove me crazy on my tiny Georgian 23. I drilled a hole in the mast and sprayed foam in which helped. Well my dad did it actually- yay dads!
Hope you get a chance to visit Bornholm on some other trip. It is certainly worth visiting. I got a share in two summer houses there, one of them in Gudhjem which is one of the gems of the island - a charming town with a small marina. Let me know if you ever come to Bornholm. If I happen to be there at the same time, you can certainly get a bed and a tour around the island. I really enjoy your channel. Seems we have quite some common interests: At least sailing and saxophone playing 🙂
Nice trip. Wow, yes, knock down. (Or blow down). Did that off of San Francisco once. And Albergs are tender initially but great ultimately. So took some wind to do that. Yes, Svend and nothing short of AMAZING! And he is doing this huge voyage in his tiny home built boat and he must be in his mid eighties! What! Thanks for the link, will follow him.
Loving your videos Sam....gotta say the ocean scares me so I have huge respect for all you crazy buggers sailing solo around the world 😉 If you ever come to South Australia you're welcome to stay at my place...I'll even show you around Adelaide. Happy sailing mate 😉
@30:50 - I had to read Nevil Shute's "On the Beach" when I was an undergrad. Really helps new generations understand the zeitgeist of that long ago era.
Thanks for the video Sam. Enjoy your content. Guaranteed like! Would love longer videos if possible, but I'll still watch no matter what. Happy and Safe sailing. Cheers.
re chafing: tie a full turn so that chafing is not in one spot; if you get a chance , find some decommissoned fire hose, canvas is very good chaffing protection.. great video, as always
Surprised you didn't have better chafing gear sir. Glad you acknowledged that. I'd also put something soft on the solar panel metal edging, that edge could give a serious gash on your head real quick.
As an aspiring wilderness survivalist, these videos always humble me about the difference between dangers on land and dangers at sea. Bears and wolves and cougars are scary af, sure. But the open sea and the idea of sharks scares the shit out of me.
You inspired me to get a boat of my own! It’s so cool that you’re here in Sweden. Watch out for the seam on the soft shackle. It came loose on a friends sheet. I threaded the whole sheet through the ring on the jib and then locked the soft shackle. It seems stronger even though the sheet slides a bit through the hole every time I tack.
Be careful, bro. Too many sailors have been thrown overboard when they weren't prepared for it. (No life jacket or harness when that unsuspecting squall or gusts hit.) Lucky this time, but it will catch up with you. Heed the warning. And don't use the stove when you're tired.
To avoid the chafe, don't use slipped/doubled lines unless you are about to leave - tie lines on with a round turn bowline or round turn and 2 half hitches
I LOVED this video! Your visit with Yrvind reminded me of when Mr. Rogers would go visit famous or interesting people. You two are gentles giants of the sea.
So you are the guy from the american boat, wich i saw on the 22. of June in Kaeseberga...? I was very surprised to see an american boat in Sweden, so i tried a few times to look at you on this day for maybe some smalltalk. But with no sucsess on this morning until we left...
Sven is 83 and planning his next round-the-world voyage. Respect!
Yep - that's amazing.
Amazing. Wish him God speed
That’s how I want to grow old!
It’s amazing that he is still so energetic and excited to do this.
I could listen to him talk for hours.
Sven is an absolute legend and I think Sam might become a legend when he's his age, too.
I love Sam's videos. No annoying intro. No filler. Just raw sailing with a nice smile
I concur.
Being born in the 1930's... pre WW2, watching the world as it is now... I would absolutely LOVE to have a conversation with this man
When I sent a little coin to Yrvind on Paypal to help him a tiny bit, he was gracious enough to start chatting with me by email.
Yrvind is a legend. Thanks for sharing!
Sven is almost mythical in my eyes, but real at the same time lol.
@@snakeshift9172 I know right!

Pretty sad Sven won't be coming to New Zealand, was hoping to see him here. He deserves to get an honorary visa...

Eastern Sweden sure is beautiful. Sven Yrvind what a micro boat builder and sailing legend! Keep going strong ole Sven! Thanks for sharing.
Sven Yrvind is a legend....Sam you're becoming a legend. Trust me. Epic episode.
Hei Sam, a tip: take the rope twice around the ring and you'll avoid the chafe. Thanks for all your nice episodes! Greetings from a sailor in Norway
Sven is legend! We can all learn a lot just from observing him.
I really like your “ no-nonsense” style of videos. They have great pace, lots packed in there efficiently. Always interesting.

I've printed a lot of stuff for my dad's boat using PETG, that works out pretty well in UV. PLA will degrade with UV and heat
