Phil was a friend and classmate of mine at ASU, although I was about 4 years ahead of him, I would run into him everywhere on campus and in Tempe. I was on ASU Golf for my first two years, but would run into him later when I became a pro at Camelback and then at Desert Highlands. His foundation that he and Amy created, is wonderful. A class Act.
According to an early-mid 90s Golf Digest article, Manny Zerman a talented young amateur, was Phil's first victim of trash talk, getting inside his head and relentless, one sided victories in match and stroke play, to the point of young Manny choosing another career, visibly scarred and shaken. True? 🇨🇦
@@moemanncann895 No, Rubbish. I know Manny. He is a current instructor like I was and incredibly talented Both Manny and I loved the science of teaching versus competition. I never turned pro and I came to teaching very quickly when I became an assistant Pro at 21. But in terms of trash talking a talented champion amateur into finding another career which was, in the end, golf, just not the competitive PGA side of thing, that is CRAP. I am glad he is still in it. I became a mass Tort Attorney after teaching for 14 years.
I really appreciate your response, an article may contain half truths, opinions and a differing version of events which only get embellished, exaggerated over time, I'm glad to hear Manny and yourself are successful and doing well . From a Canadian lefty
Wow! We met Phil on Tuesday while having a picnic in the mountains. We had no idea who he was, when he left we all decided he was famous. When he told my kids he was from California they ask if he knew anyone famous, he replied "you all". When we were home and settled in it hit after an internet search. He is definitely a class act.
That Bike story was excellent, sounding like a Scene from Happy Gilmore or Caddyshack. I could listen to Phil talk all day. He is the only Player, to be on a Par with the great Seve, when it comes to Short game.
Great stories and smack talking. I especially like the bike and Thanksgiving stories. Fast forward to 2021 PGA - Yes, all your hard work did pay off - CONGRATS oldest Major winner EVER !!!
I've always been a Tiger guy, but appreciate Phil and his masterful game! This is truly good... maybe the Golf Channel should pick it up... instead of the other crap that it runs. Funny stuff, only 'real' golfers would understand. THANKS PHIL!!!!!
So, it's 2001 and for my 50th birthday my wife gives me a trip to the Colonial in Fort Worth. My brother-in-law goes along with me and we're watching Phil and Tom Lehman play their practice round on Wednesday. We followed them for several holes and on one of the short par 4's Phil has an approach shot from about 50 yards out. He hits a low shot that takes one big bounce and checks up right next to the hole. My brother-in-law says "Wow, how did he do that?" . I jokingly said "Why don't you ask him?". So Kevin, my brother-in-law, trots right up to Phil in the middle of the fairway and says "What club did you hit on that shot?". Phil says "an L wedge". Kevin says "How did you get it to stop like that?". Phil says "Well you've got to keep your hands in front of the club head and catch the ball on the bottom two grooves." and he shows him the stroke in slow motion. I'm standing in the rough dumb-founded when Kevin comes back over. I said "You realize you just got a golf lesson from Phil Mickelson???". Totally cool guy obviously enjoying life. I've been a Phil fan ever since. Tom Lehman was also cool. When they were finishing their round we asked what time they teed off on Thursday. They said 9 am and we said sorry but that's the same time as our round. They said have a good round.
My brother competed against Phil college, he hit one out of bounds in practice round. Phil proceeds to chase the ball down into a wooded area, he comes back with the ball in his mouth. Phil is funny guy, maybe a little nuts.
"Phireside With Phil" - 58,027 views. I'm starting to feel my pulse again. This is my "brother", Phil. I'm sorry, maybe he hasn't done enough for you. Ever heard of a patch of grass called Scotland? How about a little parcel folks call the United States of America. He is a loving husband and father. It is Christmas. Don't piss me off. Let's get these views up! For the children. For the first-responders. For everything we hold dear. For the reindeer. Just hit BOMBS
I thought that too touristguy87. Perhaps there is more to it than I realise and my rule knowledge doesn't go that far, but my first thought was: To ensure the round was completed on the same layout, why didn't a green keeper just replace the inner cup without changing the hole? It would have held up play removing and replacing the cup, but cutting a new hole did that anyway.
@@oneday458 I think that it plain and simply was just far easier, quicker and less offensive for them to do that. They probably already had a hole mapped out for that day (assuming the normal schedule of play) and so they just went ahead and cut the hole especially if no one was on the green. but it is a classic example of why telling someone the same thing 3 times rarely solves the problem, and also that assholes have to be assholes...this is a great incentive for said assholes to go out and shit in more cups the next night. there's nothing that an asshole loves more than getting credit and being rewarded for being an asshole
In 2004, during the PGA at Whistling Straights, Phil reportedly decided to punch holes in the walls of the lakefront home he rented for the week. This, after his wife refused to stay in the home they had agreed to stay in but at the last minute re-nigged because the home owners had a dog. In contrast, Tiger Woods stayed down the beach at a private residence that he rented. When the home owners returned they found their home was spotless and Tiger had left them signed shirts and caps.

Not sure how cutting a new hole solves that problem.
Then the players don't have to reach into the same cup.
