  • "Roman Sunset" by Bridget Kearney
Off the new album Comeback Kid, out now.
    Order and listen here: lnk.to/bk-come...
A song about the death of empires, and the parallels when you zoom out on these huge historical story arcs and when you zoom in on your own individual stories. The rise and fall of a romance can feel very similar to the rise and fall of an empire, and you can certainly see when the demise is on the horizon. You resist it, you fight back but at some point you must accept it. One of my favorite lines from the record is in this song “You sink or swim or you learn to fly.”
Bridget Kearney: vocals, bass, keyboards, guitars
Dan Molad: drums, percussion, keyboards, guitars
    Zach Tenorio: additional keyboards
    Produced by Dan Molad
    Mixed by Dan Molad
Mastered by Emily Lazar at The Lodge Mastering
Engineered by Jon Joseph at Squid Rag Dry Fly in San Pedro, CA

    Lyrics:
    The sky is changing
    The air is new
    I feel a strangeness
    Coming over you
    It’s the old arrangement
    Stand two by two
    Wait for the warship
To come in on a cruise
Will the sun go down on Rome again?
Will the sun go down on Rome again?
    Barbaric heathens
    What have we learned?
    From all our believing
    And crosses burned
    Sanctimonious leaving
    No stone unturned
    But a battle won is
    A battle earned
Will the sun go down on Rome again?
Will the sun go down on Rome again?
    If God is angry
    Well, who am I
    To try to change it
    Let live let die
    Take it or leave it
    Stand down, stand by
    You sink or swim or
    You learn to fly
And let the sun go down on Rome again
Let the sun go down on Rome again

There’s so much emotional / philosophical density in a few words in these lyrics. Presenting this as a lyric video helps illustrate that. It’s not always comfortable to ponder the transitory/ephemeral status we humans always find ourselves in, (in this case, watching an empire careen towards its coda), this song does it as well or better than a Keats Poem. I hadn’t been doing my requisite 35 minutes daily thinking about the Roman Empire but this makes me want to get back on track with that:)

Another beautiful song! We all knew already that Bridget Kearney is one of the best writers around. This is more proof! Is this whole album out? Is that a rubber bridge acoustic guitar on the track?
