One time Balmages came to rehearse with my band and he told us to give him 4 notes and we did. C,Db,G and F were the notes and he slowly walked to the piano and he started playing and my god it was the most amazing piece I have ever heard. He sat there for about four minutes and played the most beautiful and complex song I have ever heard...
Edit: Oh my god. I’m sooo sorry for this embarrassing excuse of grammar. Ooooo, that’s horrific.
THATS ACTUALLY SO COOL!! I play piano and have played for eight or nine years and improv can be so beautiful if played right!!
lucky. If i got to meet Brian Balmages i would die. lol
you’re grammars fine, you got your point across don’t worry!
also i wish i could hear this on piano wow!!!
Trombones all remember measures 114 - 118.
+Cameron Brule Yeah. It's my chair tryout music today. Lol
Good luck! It was our chair test last year. :)
I got 1st out of 9.
Ben Wierenga Congratulations!
Yeah, it's not easy :P
I started out playing this on tuba then switched to euphonium full time. Basically got thrown into the fire with how high the part was, and it helped me out a lot.
didn't get above a high B till freshman year of high school. glad im finally getting used to it now tho, two years later. wish I had learned higher notes in middle school!
same here! im in middle doing this one right now, and
these high notes are killing me
Im not here because i played it, im here because brian balmages is an absolute musical genius. And no, I didnt play it.
Random cello player here, am absolutely in love with this piece
Groot Random violin player here. All I can say is that Brian Balmages is awesome😊
Groot, I agree have you listened to his song "Elements?"
Groot
Same here. I am playing one of his songs, but not this one. Also, I noticed he has a lot of songs where there are A’s held for 2 beats.
He's amazing but not as good as Samuel Hazo
My concert is TODAY! I'm playing 1st clarinet! Wish me luck!
Sachio Nang who the hell cares but hope you did well :)
Lucky I got 2nd
We are playing this, we are in desperate need of a louder clarinet player
Yes, I offered to take the solo as a saxophone player.
I have 1st this year and I’m the only 1st and I get so shook at measure 102😭
Hope you did well!
Personally, I think this is Brian's best piece.
Personally, I like Afterburn better
Afterburn is good, but the finale on this song is simply gripping.
Moscow 1941 and Into the Arctic.
4 years huh yeah I like this song, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like other songs too. The human brain is dumb it can’t recognize facts from opinions.
Nobody else likes Arabian Dances the most? _Just me?_ *Ok.*
I remember playing this on bass clarinet for concert band back in middle school and feeling like I was playing for a movie soundtrack. An absolute lovely piece to listen to after so long!
bass clarinet player here, this was so awesome to play!! I keep it in my folder to just play it for fun sometimes LOLL
@@gloomyyshrooms4973 Bari sax here who sits near the bass clarinet during band, we’re playing this song right now and we both love it.
I also played this song on my bass clarinet, but in high school. It was quite amazing ngl
I love how this song gives a chance for all instruments to pop out, with either little solos or just amazing parts to play with your section
I played the first clarinet part in this song the first year I was in band and totally nailed those solos! Still one of my favorite pieces I've played to date ^^
The directors daughter has it and oh Lord 😥
i was second clarinet, and honestly i was kinda glad but also sad that i didnt get that solo 😅
Played this freshman year on first horn; one of the best pieces I've ever played.
I'm a 1st Horn too! We're playing this piece this year (my senior year). The horn line of this song, especially at the beginning, is beautiful!!
I'm second horn and a freshman, but I agree that this is such an awesome piece
Brian Balmages is one of the best composers out there I absolutely love his work
french horn on this though is amazing
Played this my freshman year of high school. Still one of my favorites. :)
Noelle Holden same
FYI this is not a grade 5 piece
played this 8th grade the 1 problem is this drummer in my class who throws off beat :(
I'm playing this in 7th grade, it's honestly not that hard, u just have to be able to play fast
Nolan Fallon lol Nolan when did you get here
Flute is love flute is life 👌
Respect. For me, Flute is the impossible instruments
Omar Reyna yeth ma’am
Flute here!!!!
As a male flute player, I approve
Im glad I got to meet Brian Balmages what an absolute legend
Oh god, 102 for clarinets...
Well, 1st part Clarinets, atleast.
My band director had all of us play it😂
Dire Crusader it’s fun to be able to play the queues as a 2nd clarinet :P
Exactly 😭
best part 😭😂❤️
BIG FACTS
2:22 is like my favorite part of the song. AL that low brass sound. Go tubas
actually that was trombone, I play this in symphonic band on trombone
+Foxy the Pirate yeah. I play tuba and I played this piece 3 times. tuba is involed in that part
Foxy tubas play that part to nogga
*and bari saxes
And alto sax
Euphonium part is pretty bawlin'.
They have a soli too (I forgot what measures)
+Gabbie Casey doing this as a freshman in my schools symphonic band, i need to know where this solo is.
Euphoniums rule
I think it’s at 115
Remi Pepelko bar 115 is 3:26
I played Clarinet 1 measures 5-42 for my grandmother with Alzheimer's via zoom call (bc of covid) shortly before she passed and now whenever I play that part I get really emotional. It was the last time I got to see her even virtually before she succumbed to her disease, and she loved hearing the music, even if she wasn't really sure who I was.
Been four years since I played this piece with my old high schools band. Jesus times flies. I’m a sophomore in college now and this is still one of my favorites
Playing alto sax is so fun on this
agree
Very true
agreed
but its death at the same time
It’s fun but also painful
4:09 gives me chills. I think it's because of the snare. It sounds so cool when you're in the back.
After playing this in my Junior year of high school, I recognized a high school band practicing this outside just today! Really took me back
1:55 that little part reminds me of Kirby music SOO much X3
SAME!!!!! I thought I was the only one thinking that.
Best part of the piece
Where my clarinet squad at 👀 👋
guess the clarinet squad is dead
DragonMaster 17 dont worry I gotchu
DragonMaster 17 I got u homie

i swear all of brian balmages' songs feature clarinets
and i loVE IT
1st f horn in our band and i loveee our part
This was my firt piece after switching to horn in f and this song will always stick with me!
3:08 the clarinets aghhh I need to play that in front of my whole band class
I played this piece. Brings back past emotions...
Same I want to cry every time I hear it
this is the most beautiful concert band piece ever written. the horn parts are so majestic!
I'm playing 1st trumpet on this for my high school at our concert on Tuesday! I'm so pumped for it; this piece is my favorite that we're playing!
IM SO MAD!!!! I WAS GONNA PLAY THIS WITH MY BAND BUT CORONA CANCELLED IT AND NOW I CANT :(

Wassup :)
Rayneisha Smith Yeah
Rayneisha Smith hello my bros

I love you Gallery of Sounds for posting this. I almost love it more than Electricity it is that good. Thank you! :D
Brian Balmages is an INCREDIBLE musical writer! Love this piece!
OBOES Yeah!!!!!!!
1st flutes anyone?
played this in my band class, one of my fav pieces by far. sounds so magical here. love it
I played this piece in eighth grade and fell in love with it. Now, as a senior in high school, I’m getting to play it with our top-level band. This piece is and always will be my favorite of all time.
I’m playing Arabian Dances soon, and I was curious what other pieces Brian Balmages wrote. This is _spectacular!_
Im playing this in my school's Wind Ensemble and a bunch of my friends are playing Arabian Dances in Symphonic Band
ARABIAN DANCES!! That takes me back!
bassoon woot woot
crookedumbrella
yay!!!! more of us!!!!
Yes finally
This one is by far my favorite by Brian! It really creates the dream that I'm flying "Among the Clouds"
I loved playing this last year. Was one of my favorite pieces
Playing this in my upcoming concert in October :D
I'm playing 3rd trombone, it's nice to play the first chair but sometimes it's also really cool when you get to play low parts and have totally unique rythms from everyone else
Thank you Brian
My band started playing this when I was in 9th grade, but the instructor scrapped it because we didn’t get it down in time. I finally convinced him to let us play it in my senior year. It was the last song in our last concert. I’ll always have a special place in my heart for this piece.
We played this in my 8th grade year for a music festival in St. Louis. Now I am a junior in college. Damn, time flies.
i played this piece for my concert today and i’ll just say i got goosebumps bc the euphonium part is just something else lol
I just played it at my concert today
I'm playing this for my 2019 spring concert.
So thankful I got to play with him as my conductor!
wOaH
Probably my favorite piece done by Brian Balmages. While it wasnt this piece im glad i did get to meet him when playing Moscow for an allshore band, his thoughts on music are some of the most interesting to me, i hear my band may be playing into the artic this year, and im stoked to finally be able to perform another piece of his
We play this to practice sight reading every year in my high school band and I play horn out of the two horns we have so we get the awesome parts
+link24 *gasp* youre name..... is really similar to my original name.... and my username on like every videogame i ever played. Now onto my orginal comment, i play trumpet and at my school there's also only two horns so it sucks that because im really outnumbered in the trumpet section i dont get any of the solo's......
When I learned my band is playing this I was sooooooooooo happy!
Then I realized that Trombones dont have the fucking awesome melody.
Which arrangment did your band director give you??? My part has like half of all the epic melodies :3
WHAT
The Descendant yeah x3 it's so good
Let's be honest, when do we have the awesome melody?
CJ Ramos when its a sousa piece XD
we’re playing this in band this year and it is certainly one of balmages’ best works.
Played this my senior year as first chair clarinet and I nailed that solo. Good times.
I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH
#clarinet4lyfe
Yasssss, but I changed to Bass Clarinet...but still!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes saba....XD
yass
Yeeaaah
Joshua Polischuk Ayyyyyy Clarinet Squad
ugh why do I love this so much😭
This always brings a smile to my face :)
2:27 is greeeat
I wanna play this so bad but it's too complicated for me band students 😭 but it's so beautiful and breathtaking
We're playing this right now for our high school and this is one the most fun peices I've ever played
This is the one song I wish I could've played in high school, especially for our Big 9 event. I even practiced the entire song on my trumpet with the sheet music in my own time
#lowbrassftw
Anakin Skywalker u want some sand with that
Yasss
I played this at mid fest and it was fun and im a tuba. We only saw this song about 5 times and it was good. Tubas for life
This was so much fun to play
Ooooo I'm playing this!! It's so pretty. Alto Saxesss!!
any 1st altos?
Nithilan Vincent here were doing this next concert
Here! Currently working on Arabian Dances, Amparito Roca, and Salvation is Created!
Alto? TRUMPET IS WHERE IT IS AT! ULTRA-EGO ACTIVATED!
Oy
Dreadfulprism41 guessing you really wanted to go on the 'big' band only trip?
*goosebumps*
Percussion on this song was sooo fun to play!!
Played this piece back in middle school! Us clarinets had this inside joke that we used up until we went to high school, where whenever we'd listen to a song for the first time, and a hard-sounding part came up, we would always say "I bet this part is on measure 102", in reference to that dreaded clarinet part at around 3:08 in the video. It was a really fun piece to play, in all honesty, and I wish I could go back in time and do it all over again!
Euphoniums all the way! I love my part for this song more than any other piece my band is doing!
French horn and clarinets 0:54 are speeding up...
The euphonium part is amazing
Currently playing this in band it’s one of my favs
flute is da best
YES :DDDD
+Christy Chacko i must disagree and say trompeta es el mejor!
+League of Legends *shrug* it really matters WHO'S playing it, not what is being played. You might be playing an instrument with high popularity, but the player him/herself isn't good.
+Christy Chacko I would complain but the trumpets do have awesome parts here so....
Ike TheSpike The trumpets in my band suck
I gotta play this for my upcoming concert in high school
Same
I played first clarinet when I play this song and I loved it. This is a great song
dPfka ths I'm playing 1st clarinet now! I love this song!😀
Currently in the process of writing some stuff for a D&D campaign that involves a lot of worldbuilding for a location known as the Elemental Plane of Air. In a nutshell, its a dimension full of open sky, the most beautiful clouds you can imagine but better, and hundreds of floating islands scattered all over the place. Right now I'm working on the imagery for the location, and this is one of the two songs I'm listening to a lot for creative inspiration.
And as a sidenote, I played this song with my school's band this past school year. I played the Alto Saxophone part.
All the flutes know THAT part
Shiny piccolo and I know hahaha
Flute here!!!!
Clarinets😁😁😁
This is why I love Brian’s music.
He knows how to use the clarinets to their full potential
I play 1st clarinet and it’s awesome!
There.. Among the Clouds lay the lost city of Aeron.. Lost to time to protect the world.. Aeron rises again, awoken by a band of adventurers. But beneath the white marble stone lays a dark secret, a tarrasque.. Graknar.. The beast was trapped in ice and stone along with the city now he stirs again..
This piece helped inspire my next arc in my dnd campaign as a DM. Pretty cool, thanks Brian.
This is one of his best...
Tomorrow's yesterday and Images of Ireland is amazing
the bass clarinet part in this is cool
me😁. i play bass clarinet
+Jazlyn Davis nice 👌👍😊
+Richard Springer yuss
I usually never get chills from my own instrument, but with this song though
yeah this song is just fun to play
Any trumpet here?
This song is so magical
I played the tuba part on Double Bass for the band spring trip to St. Louis last April and I loved it! Other than the constant transposing...
what are you talking about, you don't have to transpose if your both written in bass clef and in the same key
Gino Gamboni I do have to transpose up an octave if my instrument doesn't go below E and there are a ton of notes under E.
oh, i see, didn't know the double bass could not go so low
I'm a trombone actively playing this piece in high school. I'm stuck in 114-118. Any tips?
Aaron cole try to practise that part with a slower tempo first
Aaron cole, wow our band is doing this in 7th and 8th grade. Slow it down first and slowly speed it up.
right the slide position above the notes, helps me. and that part is freaking rough
also trombone for life
Same w/ me, any tips
Im so glad im performing this its my favorite
Played this for district honor band, it was so much fun! (trumpet here)
French horns all the way🤘🏻
YASS FRENCH HORNS!!!! i was 1 horn
Jacey ODaniel they sound so good in this song
Right
You already know
Agreed!
Seventh grade euph playing this in my school's symphonic band and lemme just say, these clouds are too high
The select and combined band at my school is doing this song for competition this year and i play second flute, and the fugue is pretty difficult, at least for me, so practicing to this video has really helped.
played this today, beautiful
Any tubas out there?
1st chair
Here brother
tuba family
Yeah man we get the bass :)
#trumpetsrule
*ha!*
Calvert League funny joke
Yes they do!
of course 😇
I remember playing this a year ago and it was great playing with the honor band for midfest. Tubas are the best.
I literally zoned out when listening to this, it's that good.
love this song second Altos!!😍
I play 2nd alto, wish I played first though
I legit just held the G# key down the whole time and it worked
