  • Dave's mums nickname is Picky, short for pickles. No idea why! She does like her pickles, though. Anyways, here's a very simple recipe to make two types of dill pickles. Sliced dill pickle chips (hamburger pickles), and whole baby dill pickles. We're using a product called pickle crisp in this recipe. It's a great ingredient, especially for beginner canners, to help make your pickles as crunchy as they should be. Minimal ingredients in this recipe make it a great canning recipe for beginner canners. Stuff your jars full, add the simple pickle brine recipe and water bath for 10 minutes for a shelf stable canned dill pickle. The thickness of the hamburger pickles is VERY important!

    Love the video!!! Just an FYI, I use Mrs. Wages pickle crisp and it calls for only 1/4 tsp for quart and 1/8" for pint jars.

    GIRL, get yourself Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Plus Mandoline. You get a thin and thick slicer blade. Mine is still sharp after many years of use.

    A mandolin would work great for slicing. Great content!
    I've used your grandmother's recipe before and it was great!
    Going to throw in some sliced jalapeños for a Lil extra kick.

      Nothing special really. Just planted two seedlings in the hoop house in early June. Trained the vines to grow up, adding string support as needed. The beds in the hoop house are replenished with compost each spring. The cucumbers are seeds we have been growing and saving for many years, so they are well suited for our area now, after many seasons of breeding.

      @@Wilderstead I have been looking for a dill pickle recipe that has the same taste as hamburger dill slices. Does your recipe taste like kosher or hamburger dill slices?

    Awesome video. How often u think ur getting that many ? Also I'm having an issue not picking enough to can so I accumulated enough but the first ones I picked weren't crisp anymore. What can I do to help keep em fresh for a few days after picking?

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  Рік тому +2

      We harvest several pounds a day once the plants start producing. At the start of the season, we harvest the cukes, wash them and keep them in a ziplock back for a few days in the crisper until we have enough to process.

    Hey my altitude is 1320 ft above see level, how long should I add to the canning time of this recipe? Not sure what your altitude is so just checking.

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  11 місяців тому

      I would suggest referring to a canning altitude chart and adjusting things accordingly.

    What if you don’t use any pick crisp and pickling salt? Is their a way to not use that? And just use regular salt? How long will the pickles last in a jar if I don’t put them in the pot like you did at the end?

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  2 роки тому +2

      You’ll want to find a refrigerator pickle recipe most likely.

      As long as the only ingredient is salt, use whatever salt you like.

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  2 роки тому +2

      Absolutely! Just remove the blossom end on your cucumbers before putting them in the jars.

      I have found adding a bay leaf to each jar encourages crispness and doesn't change the taste.

    Just found your channel, have to say you make it look so simple, can I ask is your vinegar just plain 5% white vinegar or do you infused it with pickling spice before adding the water. Can I also please ask what variety of Dill Cucumber you plant. We call them Gherkins in the UK

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  Рік тому +1

      It’s just plain 5% vinegar. The cucumber variety is Wisconsin. We save seeds every year from our cucumbers and grow them the following year.
