‪He is now into legend. Like Oscar before him, and Harold Prince. I’m so sad, I might never musicals ever again. Being in a Sondheim is like- being in a Disney film. If ever there was a true impresario- then Sondheim was one for all time. Not just of now, or then, but forever. ❤️‬ (1930-2021)

since his death last week, i've fallen down the wormhole of sondheim videos. i haven't seen any video essays on this musical so i was SO happy when i found this. i honestly teared up at this, you really were really able to capture the genius of sondheim and this musical. thank you for this, and i would love more sondheim videos from you in the future if you ever planned to do so :)

The reason I like Sondheim and find him unique is because despite dissonant sounds, it doesn't sound atonal. Unlike the modernist music that defined the classical genre in the 20th century, he utilises the best of 20th century classical motifs and techniques without atonality. His sound is also unique from a lot of 20th century musicals because of his distinct emphasis on music over lyrics - you can hear how his songs are different from a lot of other big names in theatre.

Sondheim was a PRECISE and exacting lyricist. I'm not sure what you mean by "his distinct emphasis on music over lyrics", but I can assure you that this was in no way his emphasis. You only need to look at his two massive volumes on lyric writing ("Finishing The Hat" and "Look, I Made A Hat") to know this.
