You mentioning the enjoyment of the journey vs the end game. Was what took the joy of EQ, WOW & RL hobbies away from me. I approached everything in life as "carrot on stick". While you might have made a video about gaming. You actually helped me in my own approach to life. I thank you for this.

this mentality is what made me quit path of exile. I worked so hard to get that end game gear and in the end i was left feeling empty, and in need of getting better stuff because it just wasnt enough.... so i quit the game because i wasnt having fun anymore. I know exactly how you feel.

I haven’t checked this version out, but I’m sceptical about it being true to the original and also being fun. As someone that played the original in its day, I recall Everquest as a hardcore grind which was only enjoyable if you were part of a guild. I wonder how many people that think back about how much fun it was (I’m not saying it wasn’t fun, I enjoyed it) also recall how massively dependant on your items most classes were. A recently killed naked max level warrior was completely useless and, in many cases, reliant on friends or a guild to even get back to the general location of their corpse let alone recover the corpse. It was also quite possible to lose all your gear by dying somewhere that you can’t get back to even with a small group to help. People were generally more friendly back then. Random people might offer to help you get your corpse back. I wonder what would happen today if you gave permission so someone else could drag your corpse, they might equally drag it to an even more dangerous place as much as drag it back to the zone exit. I think Everquest was very much something of its time. A time when it cost a lot of money to own a PC capable of running it or even to have internet access. As a consequence, immaturity among the player base was very low. You were mostly dealing with adults that were more interested in making friends and having fun than trolling others for kicks

My experience on Blue is a lot like what you're describing old school EQ to be. I never had the chance to play back then, but the people on P99 are incredibly kind, helpful, and mature. I've had tons of help with everything from gear, to buffs, to corpse recoveries. Even had a person help my poor druid drag three corpses out of the bottom of the bear pits, and then refuse any payment for the 2 hours they spent on a mission impossible rescue. They even died twice in the process but were just happy to help. A lot of the toxicity, immaturity, and general ugliness you see in other online games is really not an issue in P99. I've heard at end game it gets a bit cut throat for some of the really sought after raid bosses, but again I think that's just the spirit of classic everquest coming through.

@@SanguineUltima I wrote this before watching some of your other videos. It does seem like the community on that server is quite nice. Although, these days a game server can easily get spoiled by one influencer bringing in a load of new players, e.g. what happened to 2B2T with the thecampingrusher. Griefing as a pastime just wasn’t a thing back when this game was new. You never know these days the true motives of the person you talk to. Some people go to extraordinary lengths these days to grief. Like in EVE online and also in WOW where there have been cases of people literally taking multiple months to build up trust with people just so they can screw them over. I sound a bit like one of those old people saying when they were a kid they could leave their front door open and not have to worry. It is kind of the same thing with online gaming. Better to keep your guard up these days, which does spoil things slightly

I love p99! My story is like yours; I was too young to really understand the game when it launched so I mostly watched my dad play, but recently I’ve gotten into p99 on the Green server and it really clicked for me in a way no other MMO has. It’s slow, but it makes me enjoy the journey and not just rush to the end game. The people there are so friendly and it’s a small community so you see the same people as you travel.

I grew up playing EQ with my dad. He was in one of the top raiding guilds on Mith Marr server and I remember staying up late on the weekends watching him raid with him guild. I've played on many different EQ serves from live, tlps, p99 and quarm and a few others but I really enjoyed p99 and quarm. Though right now I'm playing SoD with my dad and his guild and enjoying it but every so often I find myself wanting to boot up EQ and going out and soloing some lvls. Really enjoyed the video!

I miss EQ so much. I wish there was a modern version. I played EQ1 for 10yrs from release. Did top end raiding for a while, etc, It's still some of the best MMO experiences you could have imho. If I was to play EQ again, I'd want up through Planes of Power though. To me that was peak. The 72man raids was some of the best guild raiding in any game. Needing that many people working together like a machine. But the time requirements, people requirements of that.. would be damn near impossible today.

I played earlier on in p99 and this was my takeaway as well. I was in one of the top 2 raiding guilds and by God it started off cool getting to do fights I hadn't been been able to do on Live but quickly devolved into pissing matches with rampant cheating from all guilds including our own. I quit after a guild merger during kunark and shit hit the fan and from what I gather the guild imploded on itself.
