the way Thoroughfare can never ever be a love song again once you listen to the whole album, my god i cried when i first listened to it cause its so sweet and lovely but when you experience it the first time, you can never see that song the same way, honestly her mind

The transition for Gibson Girl into Ptolemaea is one of the best musical experiences I've had in a while.
So what's wild is the first song I heard from this album was Ptolemaea, so I went into it thinking it would be a heavy doom metal album. I was not ready for a super heavy/dark Americana/Southern Gothic/pop album. But I'm so glad I did.
I hadn't listened to this album in a while but I started going back through my favorite albums of the year, and holy shit I forgot how incredible this album is. I might like it more than I did earlier this year. Her voice just perfectly fits the kind of production and istruments she plays. I do think some parts are a bit too long, but I still love how patient this album is -- it helps that the long build pays off. This is easily Top 5 of the year for me.

I started listening to doom metal after hearing a snipped from ptolemaea lol
It was my first song as well. I'm glad I kept looking up Ethel/Hayden's stuff and watched quite a few reaction videos to truly understand the album and her style.
As a queer person that grew up in a religious family in the US, American Teenager just felt like such a great way to open on this small town. I always imagined it as the start of the movie, we find ourselves in this small American town and our main character, Ethel Cain, is being introduced as this lovable but troubled main character. I absolutely adore this album and haven't stopped listening to it. Your review was absolutely great! Thank you! 🥰
Love your honest reaction, Fern. A couple of pointers - a Gibson Girl was the idealized personification of young womanhood in the 1890s-1900s - obviously Hayden is playing with the notion of male objectivism of women as Ethel is forced into sex work. August Underground is a violent exploitation film where a woman is sexually degraded and defiled before being left for dead - again, the idea of male violence towards women is the central theme. There are so many occluded cultural references here...

I know I'll never be able to recreate the feeling of listening to the album for the first tim, but watching other people listen to it for the first time gives me a feeling that comes pretty damn close. So happy you enjoyed it.
This was so satisfying to watch because you really felt the music like I did when listening to this album. Other reviewers simply did not.
The sound that you heard in ptolemaea in not a swarm of bee but it's flies buzzing you were correct about the fact that there's the same sound in family , the sound suppose to represent evil. Really put a new meaning on the title sun bleached flies
The deep voice is ptolemaea is hayden super pitched down , it's meant to symbolize the darkness -> ethel's anxieties
Also, Thoroughfare into Gibson Girl is really the ultimate sonic 1-2 punch. She didn’t have to go that hard but I’m glad she did!!
Thank you for reviewing this masterpiece! Ptolemaea is one of my fave tracks because it captures so much darkness and emotion you can literally feel her trying to escape this drug induced stupor she's in. Also it's named after one of the rings of the ninth circle of hell from Dante's Inferno saved for people who betrayed their guests which is a perfect example of how Ethel probably feels after all these men in her life who said they loved her end up betraying her in some way.
yess and i also think it could refer to how ethel feels, betraying the church and her family and running away, especially since in sun bleached flies she says she’d do anything to be back in church on sunday
The emotional rollercoaster from the wholesome and romantic Throroughfare to the cannibalism in Strangers is just... I've never experienced anything like it before through an album.
I’ve been listening to this album for the last three days, and I think my heart is broken. This is such an amazing, poignant album. Not the best thing to listen to when you’re going through mental health struggles, but no regrets. The last line, I love you and I’ll see you when you get here, has ruined me. Ethel is such an amazing artist though, and if I’m going to be ruined by anything, being ruined by a beautiful piece of art is the way I want it to be. I can’t wait to read the book. This story has truly gripped me, and I want to learn more.

52:37 to 53:00 is simply one of THE best things I've ever heard.
I want to crochet every word of that onto something. And I've never crocheted...nor do I particularly want to. But that was great...sort of a radical authenticity manifesto. I love it. And the part during Gibson Girl that you obviously _did_ go back to during edit and make look all aesthetic and cool.
And yep...when you're 100% lost in...life and music and authenticity, you look and come across like the coolest hottest charmingest thing ever. Because authenticity IS the coolest thing there is. At the end of the day...that's honestly it. It's kinda all that matters. And it can't quite be defined. But that's part of what it's all about. Anyway....yeah, I'm having fun watching this. :} So back to it...

i love how you say her voice is like a shadow in the intro because on her ep "golden age", it starts the complete opposite. her voice is wayyy more angelic in the intro "sunday morning." that ep has more of the trip hop influence that you mentioned. the song "lillies" on that ep i think is her lost trip hoppy song. you should def react the the ep--it's great!

I absolutely loooove your reactions to this work of art (especially Thoroughfare, because that’s one of my favourites and I really related to how much you were vibing to it!). This album was in my Spotify recommended when it first came out, and I listened to the first half of Family Tree (Intro) and it gave me full body chills. I immediately went to my room and turned the lights off. I listened to the whole album start to finish, in the dark, full headphones, eyes closed, and it was honestly like some kind of religious experience lmao. I have never had such an instantaneous, visceral reaction to an album before. I read the storyline after listening through a few times, and it was incredible how much of the story/vibe/mood she was able to put into the music. Truly masterful, I am literally obsessed and have been listening to it on repeat.

The annotation about the physical meaning of the pharse " if i'm turning in your stomach and i'm making you feel sick " does not hold true in the album version . But it might hold true in the demo version of the song that you can find on youtube because the outro of that version is different that the album one

lana’s music has matured and is different but u cannot say this does not give the same atmosphere as ultraviolence which i think is a big artistry compliment because it’s not many albums that have that raw ultraviolence sound imo😭
