This second video will show how to set up a 'Fortuna Leather Skiver'...As you will see, the whole procedure is comprised in adjusting three important 'pieces' of the machine: presser foot, feed roller and bell knife.
I have adjusted the machine to skive/slice thin/fine furniture/automotive leathers, etc...I mean 0.5 mm gap between 'presser foot side' and 'bell knife edge' and the gap between 'feed roller and bell knife inside edge' less than 0.5 mm . For thicker leathers the edge of bell knife should go a little further away 2.5 mm at most from the presser foot side.
You will see that is not so difficult as it seems or some masters want us to believe.
I hope you find it useful!

There are some people only dedicated to disqualify the work of someone without providing a minimum. I think that the right thing would be to give an opinion about what seems wrong or demonstrate with facts instead of 'clicking' in a nonsense way.
I want to note all of these videos are free and aimed to people who only is really interested in learning something.

    INTERESTING QUESTIONS:
    Dear Cesar,
When you sett up the skiving machine, you put the stationary cardboard to ensure the distance between bell knife and process foot 0.5-1mm for thin leather,
    Question :
    1. what the thickness for thin leather ?
    2. the gap you set will impact to the thickness leather sliced ?
    3. What if the gap set to larger than 1mm or less than 0.5mm ?
    4. The writing paper you put into the distance between feed roll and bell knife, is it a fixed distance or it need to be adjusted depends on different skiving conditions ?
    Thanks
    Hi Jessie,
    1. I am referring to 'thin leathers', such as, 'standard upholstery/automotive leather' (1:1 to 1:3 mm +/-)
    2. The closer we set the edge of bell knife to presser foot side the faster would start the slicing of leather material.
    3. If the gap is set to more than 1 mm. It means that skiving procedure would start a little farther away from the edge/side of presser foot...so, the end or beginning of leather material would be loose at the time of reaching the edge of bell knife, and instead of cutting the material it would be twisted and sent backwards and got stuck in/between.That is why the correct setting should be done very close to the side of presser foot, just enough the leather material to immediately reach the edge of bell knife.
(0.5 mm/half milimiter +/- is a wise gap distance)...if too close, less than 0.5, we only could take the risk of getting a dull edge of bell knife in case the presser foot were not well tightened...that is why, it is very importat to have a presser foot affixed with no lateral movements.
    4. The 'gap' the 'writing paper' leaves is the appropriate/fixed distance Fortuna technicians recommend in the manual. We have realized that 'writing paper' is thinner than 'stationery cardboard'...the 'gap' should have same distance along the curve going parallel with the curved edge of bell knife and curved shape of presser foot.
    Hope it helps,
    Cesar

I operate a Fortuna SAS skiving machine at work. I work in a book bindery and I skive leather for book covers so the corners lay flat and nice. I am finding myself having issues with the presser foot moving slightly as I am skiving. Maintenance isn’t much help in that area and the person that trained me tends to mess with other things that shouldn’t be messed with, so I do my best to keep this person away from the machine a lot. It doesn’t move when I have the machine off and I try to wiggle the foot. It’s fine there. Any idea what could cause that issue? Also, the way you use the paper to determine the distance between the bell knife & foot, feed roller & bell knife is very smart. This person that trained me has a habit of getting the feed roller too close to the edge of the knife & I have had to sharpen & hone a curved lip like burr off of my knife. The feed roller I use is a gritty one instead of a metal or rubber one as the company orders those specifically. Any tips on the moving presser foot would be greatly appreciated.

IMHO, there would be the next reasons
      1. The small cone was made out of hard steel. The recess is conical too where this cone is housed. The recess could be worn out due to much work. The solution would be to replace it for a new presser foot.
      ua-cam.com/video/QVyYC3-Zbug/v-deo.htmlsi=eWX56bFjYs2tR8Wm&t=174
      2. If the small bolt is not well tightened could cause the wiggle of the presser foot.
      ua-cam.com/video/QVyYC3-Zbug/v-deo.htmlsi=e5HEC8c3YxmKwBTI&t=186
      3. The presser foot is fastened to a base. Perhaps it needs to make an adjustment.
      ua-cam.com/video/Uz-yQ5KmL2c/v-deo.htmlsi=GP_0CwIyRYjpYR_2&t=97

@@Cechaflo Thank you! This does help a lot. I suspected the cone shaped tapered pin to possibly be the culprit. In my 2 years of skiving on this machine, it has not been replaced. Only the presser foot has been replaced when it comes to that specifically. I do change out between 20mm and a 30mm presser foot depending, usually using a 20mm since I do not usually need a whole lot of depth. A 20mm works best for a runoff bevel, which is typically what produces the best results for skiving corners to make the corners of a book cover lay flat and make well. I am going to adjust those square plates as well, as I’m confident that maintenance at my work is unaware that they may need adjusted just like I was really unaware as well. Your demonstration of such was extremely helpful.

I love your videos because you just write little explanations at the time you show exactly what we need to know to understand. Thanks. A doubt: The original angle of the edge of the bell does not match the angle in which it is resharpened, which is larger. I usually move the arm of the sharpening stone until I get the original angle of the bell. Perhaps it is better to give it more angle as seen in the video. Is that so?

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  4 роки тому +1

Angles of sharpening stone and bell knife came already regulated from factory. Despite of having more than 100 years it is still in working condition.ua-cam.com/video/fx_XuIHcO50/v-deo.html

Sooner or later the bolts should be removed to take off the bell knife of your machine. The unbolting process is counterclockwise.
      ua-cam.com/video/ZC_AAw8AEW0/v-deo.html
Gently hit the head of the bolts with a hammer to loosen its threads. To avoid a sliding of the tool (screwdriver) while unbolting/unscrewing process somebody else could help you to hold tight the machine's pulley wheel. If too tight a pair of long pressure pliers would be useful too. Becareful with the knife edge!

I finally got the stock Taking knife off. I used a heat gun to heat up the bolt heads and let them cool down. I should have done three cycles of that instead of just one. I also sprayed the screw heads with WD-40 and brake cleaner. In addition to all that, I also stuffed some leather between the knife hub and base plate to reduce spinning as much as possible. What really helped was having someone hold the flywheel to further reduce spinning. I'm very curious to see if I notice an obvious improvement with the Nippy 301A.
