- Romance is certainly in the air for Mr Rochester - but is it Blanche or Jane that has caught his eye?

I was genuinely amazed that they ever bothered to make any other version after this one, the two leads were just fabulous.
No one can hold a candle to Toby Stephens. It seems he actually read the book. Real Mr Rochester
What about Michael Jayston then? I like Toby Stephens very much but the real Mr. Rochester is Michael Jayston.
Timothy Dalton has got to be my favourite, the 1983 tv series is closer to the book than any other adaptation.
Amen to that!
He actually did read the book
I love that moment at 0:42. It's subtle acting but adds something rather sweet, which is, as she's saying how "where you are is home" he gets really serious and stops his banter b/c this is the first ray of hope, a sliver of proof that Jane loves him as much as he loves her. It also touches him to know he's helped her. Brilliant adaptation. I've seen it probably a dozen times, and I never tire of it.
When I get a little blue. This is my go-to movie. Instant smiles… sigh.
The best Jane Eyre, I never tire of this cast.
Am I the only one who sees the perfect chemistry between Rochester and Jane when their friend is about to leave? It seems like they were married, the way they laugh and stand side to side has more power than any quote in this film :)
Omg! I felt that too 😢😢
I love this version. But their staying this close to one another is a bit much and unrealistic.
@@Apo12345 you're right but it feels good to see them close to eachother 😊
Yep. They were perfect.
Agreed i loved this scene for that reason, also in the novel the doc wasn't the jovial happy fellow here. And yes, they seem like theyre a couple. Also i feel like Edward and ashton already conversed about jane and Edward confessed to him that he plans to marry her
This ist truly the best version. He plays his role so sensible and in the same time strong. She is such a wild and warm hearted young woman. Then the chemistry between them. Perfect Womans dream😍
Love this version, the most romantic and funny one, that wicked smile of Mr. R., so adorable
Toby Stephens is irresistable. I love this version but also feel that he is just too attractive in every way. Very few women would be able to resist his Rochester!
I've seen almost all versions, it's the very best version, close to the book. Nothing better than this movie.
He is yummy!! ❤❤
This novel is not supposed to be funny. It's a tragedy of two loving hearts .
@@greymouse718 это не трагедия. Трагедия предполагает гибель главного героя.
I love how their friend is looking at them like he's completely shipping them while he talks about two people's minds being connected
😍😍😍😍
I have this version on dvd and I adore it. The chemistry between both leads is palpable and profound. Perfect match!
Mr Rochester in this adaptation was a really lovely good hearted soul . He never spoke down to others and treated people as equals even Eshton, the coach man . He also had a great sense of humor.
But that is. It the true story... look it up he's actually a psychopath. Google Rochester the psychopath
But that was his original personality, it was only the trick played on him by his farther and brother that turned him into the bitter, morose and disappointed man he was when Jane first met him.
Um...Eshton wasn't the coachman. He was a friend and neighbor, who was more or less Rochester's equal in society.
Miss Tery how would Jane fall in love with a psychopath? He did have a dark mood, but I think any man in love would quickly snap out of it and at least open up to the woman he loves.
He was brooding, bitter and morose. Then Jane comes into his view, someone he has been searching for. She brings honesty, innocence and balance into his life, she also brings love. All things blossom with love. He brings out the best in her and she brings out the best in him. They were meant to be.
The reason this Jane Eyre adaptation remains one of my top favorites is the great chemistry between Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. They play well off each other, and I like how this version lets out Rochester's more playful side more freely as is alluded to in the book with his performance as the gypsy. I also like how this version lets out Jane's emotions a bit as she becomes more comfortable with where she is and the connections she is forming, not just with Rochester, but also with others like Adele and Mrs. Fairfax. Also, a nice foreshadowing to what occurs later in the book at 1:43.
Toby Stephens was the *perfect* Mr. Rochester!
Kitty Grimm oh dear yes!
Timothy Dalton is the Perfect Mr Rochester!
Hmm .. Yes
Agreeeeed!
This is my favourite portrayal of Jane Eyre.
Toby Stephens is the perfect Mr. Rochester.
I think this is the best version! I have never been so in love with Mr.Rochester!
You can just see Eshton match making them in his head and I love it.
ikr! especially him at 1.45
His smile. Her smile. They are darlings 🌹🕯️
That look in his eyes when she says "my true home"... *sigh*..........
I love the way Mr. Rochester is portayed in this...one of the best!
I love Toby Stephens' Rochester and I love Timothy Dalton's Rochester too
I love the way he stay near to her.. and touch her shoulder, like if he wants to hug her.
Such a smart director's choice that as Eshton is talking about twins at 1:52 they put both Jane & Rochester in the same shot, mirroring each other's body language, to show how in tune they are as well.
Nice observation on your part…..✅
Rochester's 38 in the book so I think his age is fine here.
i think, as it is allways the case, that the book is better. however i think this is the first time the character of mr. Rochester was portrayed in a way that actually made me see why someone would fall in love with him even if he had a dark sense of humour, etc. i finally see what jane sees in him.
His little sassy look at her at 1:32... Gah, so cute!
If I was being honest, I like this better than the book if only for the reason they're much more intimate with each other. And they actually have personality. I suppose the problem I was having was the lack of visuals in the book and the majority of it devoted to description, dialogue, and internal musings.
I love this so much better because I can see their interest in each other become so much more alive than in any other portrayal. Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson have chemistry in this version.
I love this version!! they are so cute together!
I got the DVD. My new obsession is this adaptation. Love it
I love theme (song)!
So sweet how Rochester is leaning on Jane while talking to Eshton.
These actors were spot on! Mr. Rochester was actually kinda hot!!!
Kinda? He was very hot!!
"Nonsense! I am the most romantic person I know!" ..sounds like a line out of oscar wilde, hehe!
Algy approves 😍🤣😘
This version is by no means perfect, but it is my favorite adaptation of the book. Ruth Wilson is perfect as Jane. I love Toby Stevens as Rochester, but I will admit, he is a trifle too handsome for the character....but to be quite honest, I don't mind. ;) it's Toby Stevens for goodness sake!
Lenore Webb
Yeah, he is way too handsome for this part.
Best version I've seen
This is amazing. It really sweet in the beginning. he's a gorgeous Rochester!
I love the friendship between Jane and Rochester. Most aristocrats wouldn’t bother to remember the names of their servants.
If Mr. Rochester had been full of pride and vanity he would’ve missed his greatest chance at love
Exactly. He's the complete opposite of Mr. Darcy gahahha
Its strange. Jane & Rochester's intimacy varies over the different movies.
The first Jane Eyre movie I watched was the 2011 version and, though I believe the actors were perfect for the roles, this film version shows more reason for them to fall in love.
This Jane Eyre shows Rochester far more emotion...more solid foundation for him to propose when he did. I want to watch all Jane Eyre movies and see how the couple's intimacy and open flirtation varies.
so true but in the 2011 movie version , the characters were way more subtle with their emotions. works well but in the novel my opinion is that it was never that dark and gothic as portrayed in 2011 adaptation, it was way more lighthearted e.g. gypsy scene
You should give the other versions a try. My favs are the BBC version and the 1997 version.
That's because Mia Wasicivska (or how her name is written) cannot act. She's incapable of expressing any emotion. I've seen her in other films, and she's absolutely horrible, if she were replaced by a log there would be no difference.
İn my opinion, This version of Jane shows too much emotion. You can clearly see her excitement, her fondness and jealousy. She is more discreet in the novel, and that's what atracts Mr. Rochester's attention towards her, She doesn't give away her secrets so easily. And Mr. Rochester is colder than he should be. Yes, he has a sharp witt and tongue; but that is not all he's about. He is also a very very passionate man with quick temper. I think that's what the actor fails to portray. I can see no true passion and no emotion in him.
@@msinvincible2000 well said. That version was so bland..
There's definitely romance in the book. It's not as obvious as in a film, because you can't see the people's expressions and actions; all we know is what"Jane" (aka Charlotte Bronte) tells us, which is limited due (I expect) to: a) what was socially acceptable at the time the book was written, and b) the number of pages it would take to explain every single expression and motion every character makes. But the romance is definitely there. :)
this is my favorite version.
this is my absolute favorite BBC miniseries.
Anyone else want their very own Rochester : he loves you for who you are, does not want to change you in anyway ,puts no demands on you, enjoys your company. Just happens to be able to provide for you when your screwed for money aswell. Which doesn’t matter. But also is a bonus, if u have none and are pennyless.
I had my own Rochester many years ago...right down to the wife he decided he didn't need to tell me about! (Fortunately, she wasn't homicidally insane and shut up in his attic. She was in merely in another country -- he claimed that they were divorced -- but they were still very much legally married according to the laws of his country even though they were living apart.) Unfortunately, when I discovered after a year that my "Rochester" was married, I also found out that I was not the only woman he had been seeing. The primary difference between Jane and me was that she never doubted that Rochester loved her. I'll never really know for certain if mine ever felt anything at all for me or if he merely pretended to so that I would think he cared and choose to stick around).
Always be careful -- and very specific -- when you wish for something.
@@OreadNYC. Wow, that must hurt immensely. I am so sorry for your loss of trust. Since it has been many years ago, I hope you are doing far better!🤞🏼
Hats off to any of you who manage to comment on this video without writing “it’s the best”
whereevery you are,It's my home,my true home
😍😍😍
Grazie per questo bellissimo film e Toby stephens è un grandissimo Mr.rochester e Jane eyre è anche lei perfetta.C'è una
Intesa eccellente tra loro! Davvero magica grazie ancora questo film è un grande regalo ❤
Mr Rochester is no way like Heathcliff-he was a brat!
I enjoyed the book very much and i enjoyed this (BEST adaption if you ask me) They're different-I think I prefer watching this but I think the book is juts as good!
Toby and Ruth are amazing as their characters!!!!!
Loved this reference to the birds!!!!
I love these words..."...where you are,my home is,my true home..."
Once upon a time I thought this scene in JE06 - when Jane returns from visting her aunt - was quite cute. But then I came across the BBC adaptation from 1973 ...
The subtle acting and the banter between the two leads struck me like lightening struck the old chestnut-tree.
And I do prefer that Jane runs away from Mr Rochester after saying those daring and revealing words "... and wherever you are is my home -- my only home."
The gorgeous Toby 😍
the difference of Rocheter's attitude between Jane...the one is care for and loved ..../ and Blanche when she's leaving....Blanche's mother didn't notice the cold attitude
one was warm and luminous and the other, cold and grey.....
👍 It's Gr8 Version. Very Well Acted By Toby Stephens + Ruth Wilson... 🌹
Wherever you are,is my “ true” home!!❤️
This version is VERY different from the book!! The original was just as romantic...
he really does play the part well!
Is there no version of the film that features the scene where Rochester disguises himself as the psychic? It really shows his playful side, I wish they'd show it
MIS315 that's why I like the 1983 mini series 😃
MIS315 Yes, there is. I don't remember the year, but is the one where Timothy Dalton plays Mr. Rochester
MIS315 the version where Olson Wells plays EFR he dresses up as the psychic like in the book
and the 1973, version..also....
It is in this version - but he pays an old woman and he hides behind a screen instead of dressing up himself. In the book the way it’s described is basically like he was doing blackface; it would have been really problematic to put that on TV.
Gosh, I never saw this series before, but now I'm convinced I must!
Wherever you are is my home- is my true home... *swoon*
this is my FAV version of Jane Eyre! :D. for some reason, the movie was deleted, so im grateful this clip is here! thnks sooo much!! :D
I love them!
I love this scene! :)
I have not seen this version- people keep recommending it to me. I think it's the first Jane Eyre I've seen who sort of smiles! Usually she's so dour. I want to watch.. hope it's on demand on Netflix.
0:43, yes, that look again😍❣️💋
Someone Please upload the whole series!!!!!! Please please please!!!!!!!!
Karina Tapia I think you can find it in dailymotion-com...The "-" is ".".Its in Greek subtitles but the audio is in english
does anyone agree that rebecca is a retelling of jane eyre?
i know what you mean it is great to have a good quality box set to watch without fear of copyright restrictions or bad quality! sometimes i do buy box sets when i am in a generous mood! LOL x
Wow, I have not thought of the resemblance between Arthur Bell Nicholls and Mr. J. Now I really have to find the photos again!!!!
[with stars in my eyes and a silly smile on my lips]
Charlotte's first love was Constantin Hèger, a married man, director of the 'Pensionnat Hèger' in Brussels, where she studied for a year or so.
Her second love was her future husband, Arthur Nicholls. His proposal came as a surprise to her because she thought he was in love with Emily - who thought he was in love with Charlotte!
After reading "Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights", Patrick Brontë shouted to his sisters: "You are both in love with the same man!!!" How right he was!...
Her second love was George Smith, her editor (he is Dr John in her last novel, Villette). Then came Arthur who was a better man than both.
@@ksotikoulamarie5452 -- Hello! Long time, no see! How are you? ☺
@@mendoncacorreia I'm fine. I was glad to see your name. I miss the time, when we had private messages in here.
Random observation, but did anyone else notice how warped the glass panes are when they show her watching from the 2nd floor? Whomever owns that property will have to have those windows restored. They're luck both the lead came (that's term, I believe) & glass are flexible (viscous) enough to withstand the settling of the building.
Actually, this is on purpose. I cannot remember exactly what the guide told me at the time, however it has to do with climate, warmth and insulation. So based on that I suppose they need to be preserved instead of restored.☺️
Respectfully, I disagree. Not that I don't find Toby Stephens handsome, I do, but I feel the need to remind you that during this time in history men who looked like him were considered very ugly. The ideal look for a man was rather effeminate, so someone with hard features like Toby's would have been considered ugly.
Kitty le Fay and mr. Rochester was an ugly man
That is the point, he wasn't supposed to be handsome and jane wasnt supposed to be typically beautiful.
Mr Rochester: Do you find me handsome Jane?
Jane (overthinking): No sir
It is hard to see her as plain when her eyes are so expressive, her mouth is so quirky and full, and her very countenance is one of prettiness. Im not a lesbian, I am a writer, and Ruth Wilson is hardpressed to be called plain.
Ive always loved this scene because if i remember correctly in the novel, this doctor never acknowledged jane almost as an equal and here he does. Infact did they even interact in the novel?
Where can I watch this (2006) version? I’m so in love with this story at the moment 😆💕
Samee😿
Brit box!
Hulu! the one on brit box is cut I think. Hulu has the whole version.
i know! I saw them all:) But i love them so much i wanted to have them:) So now I do:)
Thus version is on Amazon if your interested! Only £5 or something like that
Not at all. Don't you remember their conversation about "the men in green"? I know this adaptation is not perfect, but it's the first one that convinced that these two really loved each other.
I really want to read the book after watching this series, is the book really not as romantic? I´m a sucker for romantic Victorian stories, so I hope it is not too far of.
The movie from 1996 was ot very good in my opinion.
I echo bookworm1970 - though I adore this series!
Sheila
Where I can I watch this???
AHHH!..I just ordered the series :D...I should get it by next week! Can't wait! it is a series isn't it?
omg did they use the same Thornfield as in the 2006 version??? It looks exactly like it!
:)
This version is not available in the iTunes Store! Someone please upload it! Help
Diana T get it on Prime
I suppose Arthur said that simply because both novels deal with 'impossible loves': Catherine's love for Heathcliff (because of Edgar); Jane's love for Rochester (because of Bertha).
I fully agree with you that Rochester and Heathcliff have nothing in common; and you already know that I don't think that "Wuthering Heights" is a novel as good as "Jane Eyre".
You may find a couple of photographs of Arthur Bell Nicholls through 'Google'. One of them reminds me (vaguely) of... Michael Jayston!!!
Are you thinking of the prequel: The Wide Sargasso sea based on the novel of the same name. I forget the name of the author but basically the story centres on how Rochester meets his first wife. There have been two versions of this to my knowledge.
Oh God, yes! Daphne Du Maurier had cause to thank Charlotte Bronte a lot for her basic plot!
I do agree that this version IS a bit teened-down. A lot of light flirtation. Which I don't like in an adaptation of a classic like Jane Eyre. Jane's supposed to be a sensible, almost humorless person, and Rochester's supposed to be dark and angry, with a sardonic sense of humor. And I loved Mr. Rochester's words and speeches in the book, too, but they're all dumbed down, mundane words now. As a movie, it's cute and good. As an adaptation, not so good. lol. That's my personal take, anyway.
Jane is not humorless. I always laugh near the end when Rochester asks her if he is appalling and she responds that he is very much so, but he always was like this.
did they make a sequel to this movie?
@StrawberryMalt456 sorry i misspoke (or in this case mistyped lol). i think they use the same castle for every Jane Eyre movie--or at least it seems the same.
Allie Claire they did.
@leonardoforlife She does it beautifully...
yes - it is basically the same story line -
genteel but poor naive young girl/ orphan with fine sensibilities falls in love with/marries upper class self confident, wealthy autocratic older man with evil/mad, former wife who has a sinister 'keeper/servant' .
their relationship does not become 'real' until the manor is destroyed by fire and the older man has sustained a serious injury that changed him for life.
then they reverse roles and the young girl becomes the strong caretaker.
shame the quality is SO poor !
aww
best there is...
@tinach88 so, so true. In the book, I didn't really like Mr. Rochester. I didn't like him at all, really. He is sarcastic, biting and bitter. I only liked him here,
Can you please upload the scene from this version in which Jane first meets Adele?
To be more precise; Mr. Eshton is a character in the novel. Jane introduces us, the readers, to him like this in Chapter XVII:
"Mr. Eshton, the magistrate of the district, is gentleman-like: his hair is quite white, his eyebrows and whiskers still dark, which gives him something of the appearance of a 'père noble de théâtre.'".
But I agree with you. I cannot see why the scriptwriter found it necessary to change him to a young scientist and add all that about twins and "bad blood".
I wish they made a movie from the other novel (I am Jane Eyre) I think that gives some more insight to the book/
I'm loving this, most definately gonna buy Jane Eyre! And, yes, of course the book is better, imagine the movie would be, terrible!
golly gee.
how about i buy you some eyes for Christmas?
Yes he turned her down...
As far as I remember, there is no such a moment in the book. Have the producers of this film found some unknown pages of the novel. Otherwise this film has nothing to do with Bronte's novel. And this strange Jane that is far from being a quiet little nun. She looks like Rochester's mistress. No chemistry, no tension of the meeting.
Podrian subir la película en español latino
both first wives (in my view) reflect hidden/unacceptable/non conforming/antisocial/un-submissive/destructive/unacknowledged parts of the female psyche that the young girl does not yet possess.
but we know that she will not live the rest of her life as a diffident wimp.
I'm an older viewer and I prefer this one to the Morton/Hinds version too. Morton/Hinds leaves out huge chunks of the plot; Hinds' Rochester yells too much and Morton's Jane is always crying. Bleagh.
do not buy it! it is on youtube the whole series!
