The thing about M.A.S.K. is it the vechiles that are the stars of the line.

The 2.5-inch figures are only "not viable" until they are again. Fortnite has a line of small figures and they sell well.
For a lot of reasons, I think the only way forward here is to match the original scale. It preserves not only the cost/utility of the original toy line, but also its charm. I loved my M.A.S.K. figures as a kid precisely BECAUSE I could sneak them along anywhere with me, in places where I'd get busted for carrying bigger figures along. (Yes, I brought Brad Turner to school. A lot.)
The vehicles are perfectly sized in the original line, which was never marketed using the humans anyway. The figures, though awesome, were accessories. Heck, the toy packages prominently displayed the vehicle name, and then stuck a tiny "includes Matt Trakker figure" text blurb in the corner with a small pic.
Making M.A.S.K. into G.I. Joe doesn't honor what made M.A.S.K unique. Hasbro should keep the original scale.
(That said, I'd be all over a separate "M.A.S.K Classified" line as a supplement!)

Great arguments for keeping the original scale! That would be great to get both the original scale and a 6 inch line of figures like we see with the Jurassic park Amber collection

In this line the product was the vehicle and the agent is part of the accessories (with masks and missiles). Look at the way they presented MASK, the box has the name in bold fonts of the vehicle, not the mask, not the driver. To me it has to be same scale, 1:24, I want a continuation of the line, not a reboot and If it is a reboot, I would love to see something in the style of masterpiece, new, detailed, show-accurate vehicles with today tools aimed at collectors, the original generation who watched and remembers MASK. Hasbro (and the trend) is moving to smaller figures, as you mentioned, due to costs. I don’t see why they hasn’t tried with Has-Lab. Unlike GI Joe where every figure has the same basic shape/mechanics, MASK figures were sculpted individually. Using the Joe base will be a con, those individual body types and character designs will be lost.

Many great ideas. Yes 1:24 would match the originals better and would be great. A haslab would be the perfect way to make these and gauge interest in the line

I completely disagree with changing the scale. The figures and vehicles' original small scale made them cheaper and easier to collect, and take up less room. Can you imagine what a 3.75 scale Rhino would be like? Vehicles and playsets are difficult in the current market, but I think they are a lot more viable at the 2.5 inch scale. Plus I would like the old and new toys to be compatible with each other.
Oh god I hope not Ryan Reynolds. He would be a terrible Matt Trakker. Matt Trakker was not snarky! I agree it would be easy to do as a live action movie, though. The vehicles will probably mostly be new, but I could see a few vintage vehicles appearing as well. The original series had a 57 Chevy in it, after all, which was obviously not a late 70s or early to mid 80s vehicle.
Split Seconds were horrible, ugly toys. I wouldn't collect them even if they were cheap. No need to bring them back.
They could finally make a Shark, though!

As someone who was obsessed with MASK when they came out, but was far too young to buy them myself, I would love to have another shot at the line. My preference, of course, would be to have the figures and vehicles in the same scale as the original line, but that may not get much attention from modern consumers. I'm willing to compromise with vintage Star Wars 3 3/4 scale--it may be feasible to have smaller but still iconic vehicles like Condor or Thunderhawk at retail in that size. The only way they could pull off something like Boulder Hill would be through HasLab.

The vehicles were that small because they were the focus of the toyline and Kenner wanted to give parents the ability to buy ALL of the vehicles. That's why the scale is small---it's a vehicle toyline, not a figure toyline. And it worked.

M.A.S.K. would be a perfect fit at 4 inch. HASLABs had an EXCELLENT opportunity to do something COOL with Classifieds by bringing in a 6 inch Vehicle Line. They could have done a VAMP and MISSLE or Whirlwind (Twin Gun) versus a VAMP and ASP. They could have done a Dragonfly versus Claw and FANG. They could have done some COOL Tiers, such as the Cobra SNAKE Armour and Pac Rats. They could have gone all out and done a BATTLE PLATFORM with a SkyHawk as a Tier. Instead they gave a LAF reworked warmed over PRICE GOUGING SkyStriker.
The Possibilities are endless with M.A.S.K. at a 4 inch scale. As a kid I always thought it would have been AWESOME if M.A.S.K. was the same size as my Joes, hence why I didn't get interested in the line that much. The vehicles DID NOT fit my Joes.
The LASER COMMAND truck or the JACKHAMMER is easily VAMP/STINGER size. The cars, other than licensing shouldn't be difficult to make and produce either. GM, FORD and DODGE should jump at the chance to sign up. Keep things fair by spreading them around as M.A.S.K. and VENOM vehicles.
The SWITCHBLADE is Dragonfly / MAMBA size.
The OUTLAW is the Joe's ROCC.
If done correctly, M.A.S.K could be a SMASH HIT. However, as we have seen with Hasbro and their Joe Classifieds line, along with their 4 inch and "O" Ring, they have proven themselves INCOMPETENT at the BEST of times. A La SkyStriker anyone? $230 for a SkyStriker??? W.T.F??? In 2011 you could have bough 8 at $30 ea for that price.
Then there is the CURRENT ROUND of PRICE GOUGING they are content with. The Price of the 4 inch are OUTRAGEOUS, then it is even worse when you look at the cost of the 6 inch line, again it's gone insane, with more INCREASES to come. I am pretty much done and or OUT of Collecting, not just the Classifieds, skipped the 4 inch and "O" ring for the CRAZY PRICING, but also the BLACK Series and Marvel's Legends.
If HASBRO hasn't already, they will soon Effectively DESTROY their own Market due to GREED. The 6 inch were over priced at 19.99 a fig imo. We just witnessed a PRICE BUMP to 22.99, now there is another to 24.99. I have seen 26.99 and 29.99 respectively as well, with the LAMEAS F "Premium" coming in at 32.99 to 41.99, and 90 for a 3 pk of Joes.
DISGUSTEDLY DISAPPOINTED to say the least.
I would LOVE to see M.A.S.K. come out, if done right at the 4 inch scale, BUT ONLY if the PRICE is reasonable.
From what I have seen over the last year, it WILL NOT BE Reasonable. It will be an EYE WATERING Price Gouging the Consumer, the Fan, the Collector Price. Nothing short of FULL GECKO GREED.
Thanks for the info and the vid

Oh no, i can't take another Ryan Reynolds movie. He suffers from The Rock-itis and is the exact same guy in every movie he's in.
I would love if they relaunched this line. Only thing is i'd want the vehicles to be the same as the old ones and not updated vehicles. It's a complicated line to do because a lot of us wouldn't feel like it's actually M.A.S.K. with modern vehicles. Either way, old or modern, i'd like it to happen.

The original M.A.S.K. vehicles were 1/24 scale however their inner workings were gutted in order to satisfy the gimmick engineering, and the figures were bigger than a 1/24 scale.
Modern M.A.S.K. should make figures that are at a scale that match the star wars mission fleet and recent fortnite minis line that have been popping up at some targets (which also have better articulation than the mission fleet 5POA). The respective vehicles would be a close match to the already widely established 1/24 scale.
They should either do that scale, OR go slightly smaller and have figures that are at the megaconstrux scale. A megaconstrux scale could also be decent with the HasTak MP scaled vehicles.
Either of those scales would allow them to more easily cross promote the other brands they own. Definitely would scale better than the baroness megatron h.i.s.s. tank.

The potential for a new line at the larger scale would be incredible. Like you said though, I think it would price itself out of the market. In terms of the movie, if it is going to happen with F Gary Gray, there is no way in this timeline that Ryan Reynolds will be cast as Matt Trakker. Which is fine by be, I think a more James Bond type character would be a better fit.

Matt Trakker was essentially an 80s kids' jim phelps/peter graves from the mission impossible tv series... wmeven down to selecting the right team members for that IMF... err, M.A.S.K. mission.
While Ryan Reynolds is currently the right age to play the role, he doesn't look, nor act the age in terms of maturity that the public is used to seeing him in.
While he's too expensive now, can you imagine a CA:winter soldier type tone for a modern M.A.S.K. movie? Oddly enough, the look and demeanor of Chris Evans in that role does sync up nicely for a Matt Trakker.

I would love to see a new MASK line but I feel like there are too many hurdles to get it done. I see GM pressuring Hasbro to do their newest vehicles to help drive sales but I wonder if licensing for an old IROC Camaro would be cheaper if Hasbro could manage to negotiate that. The success of Fast and Furious does give me some hope that they could pull a movie off though and if that happens we will definitely see some toys. They could play it safe though and just release the vehicles within their standard brands similar to what they do now with Fast and Furious. To go that extra step with figures and actual transforming vehicles would be a considerable investment.

I agree, 3.75” or 4” figures will be the sweet spot. Not just for scale to vehicles, (and for a proper fitting helmet) but financially it will be a win/win for both the production costs & retail prices (not too much for us collectors, not too low so that anyone can purchase & resell).
Gotta do the original wave of vehicles prior to the rest of the line, because it makes no sense financially to produce the less popular vehicles if the main line doesn’t pan out.
That being said, I might be poor for a long time if they release an updated line of MASK, haha

Another option would be to release 2 lines. A vehicle focused line with the classic size, vehicles with updated enginering but more basic figures (no removable masks, and only as much articulation as needed to make them work with the vehicles). And of large high posable action figures without vehicles but with swappable heads and effect parts for the masks. Maybe some handheld accessories or so. The only vehicle in this line would be a cartoon accurate transforming t-bob.

I think this would be way awesome if they made them the 2.5" scale. Since Hasbro has already started down that path with Star Wars Mission Fleet it would only makes since. Along with that, Jazwares has recently released their 2.5 micro legend Fortnite line which is awesome. Mask would be a great slide in fit a long with those two lines.
Along with that, back in the 2005/2006 Hasbro also released the GI Joe Sigma line that contained both 2.5" figures and 8 inch, I believe. It would be really awesome if the 2.5" part of the line could either be worked into a MASK 2.5" line, or they could resurrect the vehicles from that line with slight retooling to work with the Mission Fleet, Fortnite, and possible 2.5" MASK action figures.
In addition, since this is a major wish list kind of thing, Hasbro should also re-release the Transformers Action Masters Line from 1990 with the figures also being 2.5" scale with transforming vehicles. Again, this would fit in great with a new MASK line. Just say'n.

Another option that hasbro could potentially save money with is to reuse the molds they had from the human alliance figures. Those were slightly smaller than the original M.A.S.K. figures, and they could do some retweaks and repaint, rerelease more of their beloved human alliance bumblebee bots, since they could pull in some of that more bankable money.

Non-removable masks, simple, but the vehicles wouldn't be huge, expensive or a space-waster at that "classic" scale. But without a 6" figure line, I don't see this taking off nowadays.

Few things you failed to mention from the original release, don't get me wrong faithful followers he was correct on everything he mentioned, however there are a few more factors
    1. The cost of a new line normally helps pay off the bills on the molding for the toys. Which Hasbro/Kenner still has most of the old M.A.S.K. molds that could save them alot of money in production, however they also have the mold for the 4" Matt tracker figure from the G.I. Joe line they mad, as well as the Cobra vehicle from the first live action movie that could easily pass off as a M.A.S.K. vehicle.
    2. One of the reasons G.I. Joe went from it's original size down to 3 3/4 inch figures was because of the cost of materials mostly the cost of oil to make plastic, and since the main stars of mask was the vehicles they would focus more of how much it would cost to make the vehicles with details, granted Fortnite makes vehicles to a 4 inch scale figure however they are no were near what we would want for M.A.S.K. in the way of details.
3.smaller scale, granted I would hate this but Hasbro might do to M.A.S.K. what they did with Star wars in their newline and shrink the figures and vehicles down a bit more to try and save on cost.

@@tydiriumhanger1320 well that would more or less depend on what molds they might have in the archives, the toy line shadow strikers might be their scale at that point, the pilots stood about half the size of M.A.S.K. figures but the portions were correct. Hasbro have had the licence for years. They did the comic tie in for the revolutions comic event but it tanked so they pulled back. Id love a 6inch but the O ring Joe scale would prob fit better and have the cars fit that. Im hoping they will do a Transformers crossover toy to gague interest as I think that will make or break it, given the recent HISS tank megatron it shows they are willing to do crossovers with their licences.
The live action film has gone quiet albeit with a writer. They were looking to do a cameo in the Joe line of films but after Snake Eyes bombed it was shelved.
MASK would be sweet even if it was a sub group of GI Joe like the recent comic run was.
I would love the old models but the recent looking take in the comic was quite cool though.

If the action figure doesn't fit into the corresponding vehicles, then there's no way for anyone to play the line. Come to think about it, the mask that every character uses is actually a helmet... makes no sense why the writers call it "mask"

  • @michaelreynolds97025
    @michaelreynolds97025 2 роки тому

4 and 1/2 in figure line I guess I would use as far as figures. Vehicles would be the size of the original GI Joe vehicles. They would also have to be based on the real world. Switchblade would have to be designed to make it look realistic. The helicopter form from the cartoon will not cut it in the movie. Mask headquarters should be a real gas station of course and actors should be a mix of star power and unknown just like Marvel's. There was talk of a shared movie universe with GI Joe and Transformers. Hopefully that still happens

How is 2 to 2.5 inch scales not viable for a MASK toy line? I'd argue it's the only viable scale for a vehicle based line. This is why Star Wars Fleet Missions is the new vehicle based line in stores, while 1/18 scale vehicles have largely gone the way of the dodo.

We may get a a vehicle once or twice a year through haslab but there will never be a full line, at least based on how toy sales and production is currently working at hasbro. Maybe they'd be able to do it at the 2.5" but Hasbro can't seem to keep up with current demands so I have no faith that they'd ever be able to produce a whole new line of figure/vehicle playsets. I hope I'm proven wrong.

He had too much of a 'cool' factor to be a matt trakker, who was a bit more bland... but now that you mention that, how about the guy that replaced him at QB in the varsity blues(?) football movie, james van der beek(?). A name like that could bring some nostalgia back to a nostalgic brand.
Now that I think about it, they could bring back that whole saved by the bell cast to play the adults. Mark paul/zack morris or dawson's creek could be the matt trakker, but their fan bases could also bring in the influx of people to support the "netflix" series, without spending too much cash on actors, while having decent odds that a profit can be made due to the support the actors have infused with the support that M.A.S.K. has (and honestly, I think the latter is the lesser numbers wise)
Yeah, I think the cast from saved by the bell and dawson's creek to play the diverse group of M.A.S.K. agents could do quite well. It can even be sold to them as a modern take on the mission impossible series from the 60s. That show had two popular men typically playing key roles in each episode (Landau & Graves).

The solution to getting MASK at retail is getting rid of the figures or making the figures one inch non poseable and going the transformers route. You said it yourself the line is about the vehicles and not the figures and while it is called MASK kids cared less about the "MASK powers" and more about the cars and trucks so why bother with the figures? Scale down the line, manage the price point and get the vehicles on shelves. MASK was never popular for its characters the way GIJoe and Transformers was so let hasbro cut to the chase and give people what they actually want. A Thunderhawk that scales with Bumblebee and a Rhino that scales with Optimus prime, the simpler gimmicks will allow Hasbro to make more money on those at mass retail and then they can fund Haslab 4" scale vehicles for us man children in a year or two if the line is successful.

Toys would want vintage vehicles. Movie….no way these car companies wouldn’t want their new cars in it. And then that would make the toys the new cars, bc they’d re going to want to support the movie. I could see them
Maybe getting away with vintage thunder hawk as being the only old model and making a big deal about it being vintage a la Transformers or making an 80’s movie and that would
Be great. Who doesn’t like an 80’s movie.
But it will go down as new vehicles movie way. Couldn’t see them doing it the other way.
