The high male voice in the large hat? That’s Mitch Grassi. We say: You’ve been MITCH-slapped! They just celebrated their TENTH anniversary as a group. They’ve won three Grammys, had sold-out tours, and sold millions of albums. They’re the most successful acapella group EVER.
And I was not disappointed ... I waited and BAM! There it was! The Mitch-slapped face! :-) So glad you loved it! Welcome to the Pentaholics, not so anonymous :-)
Pentatonix gets blocked quite a bit. Home Free and Voiceplay have their own labels and rarely get blocked unless it is an older video when they were under a record contract.
💕 ********************PENTATONIX IS LIKE A MIRACLE FOR OUR EARS********************** 💕 Great reaction, and one of my favorite from this group, is Sound of Silence 💕
Bohemian Rhapsody showcases the incredible talent like no other. The technical ability and agility displayed is phenomenal. First it the the descending bell chords, which are an absolute bugger to sing a capella and stay in tune. If that were not enough, listen to the tag at the very end. Pay close attention to Mitch in particular. He holds that lead note spot on until the very final chord. If you pay very close attention indeed, as the chord resolves, Mitch raises his note by a very precise 64th of a tone to keep the chord sounding alive. I am guessing he does not even know he is doing it. His ear and his voice are in such perfect sync he just tunes the chord automatically.
Honestly to see single take videos you need to check out their “evolution of” videos. I also recommend “gold” and “no” - as long as you are familiar with both originals. Those are songs that are not high on my list (the original is not high). I freaking love their versions. I also adore “say something”, “can’t hold us” and “run to you”. They have 3 grammies “daft punk”, “dance of the sugar plum fairy” and “jolene” with dolly parton. All are amazing. Literally anything they do is mindblowing.
My daughter turned me on to them. I was fortunate enough to get to see them live. It absolutely blew me away because they sang as good as any video/recording I have ever heard.
In most music videos like this, the audio is recorded in a studio and is then edited together with the visual images which are shot separately. Often the members of a band like Pentatonix will even record their vocals separately and then it is all synced together to produce the final song. That being said, Pentatonix is also very good at performing their work live in concerts.
@@joesmith3098 No! They never record anything that they can't do live. Their live performances are indistinguishable from their recordings...except maybe for some of the visual things they do for their videos.
@@joesmith3098 Video shoots can be very tricky. You shoot efficiently, so a number of scenes can be shot from the same angle without a lot of re-staging after every cut. As I understand it, in the "Hallelujah" video, the drone was late to the party and all the drone shots were done near the end of the shoot -- perfect for the shots when the sun disappears behind the mountains. Every video is different and requires careful planning and lots of pre-production work to fulfill the creative concept. Just think of the location scouting it took to find the right location. Think of preparation to ensure the timing of the backlit sun shots. If you want to see unedited performances, checkout their live performances and their "evolution of" videos. My favorite is "The Evolution of Michael Jackson." "Silent Night" is also a single take in an old church narthex with the only effect being the natural reverb of the church walls.
I am going to guess that Pentatonix does things differently. Having been on a Barbershop Chorus, I can tell you there is no way to mix tracks or bits and pieces together. The only way it works is a single take recording of all the voices together. The timing and tuning are too intricate. No two takes will be quite identical. If you listen to the live performance of Hallelujah, you will notice the slightly different phrasing and ever so tiny differences in the timing.
@@michaeltutty1540 I don't know anything about how they do things, except that during COVID, when everyone was confined to their homes, they individually recorded their parts for their album from their own home studios. Don't know how they pulled it off...except they are aliens who can do things mere mortals find impossible.
I'm just gonna give you a little run down about the Groups Members. The first person who sang was Scott, he's the baritone of the Group and he has an insane range and sometimes takes over the bass part when the bass is preoccupied with a solo. The second person who sang was Avi, he's the bass of the group and can sometimes sing in a baritone like range, and he left the group in 2017 for personal reasons. The third person who sang was Kirstin/Kirstie, she's a Mezzo-Soprano, that in itself is amazing because Mezzo-Sopranos unlike Sopranos can sustain lower notes easier and still be able to sing higher notes. The Fourth person who sang is Mitch, the guy with the huge hat, Mitch is a Tenor who can also sing in a Countertenor range, that is very rare, he also have 6 octave vocal range. Last but not least the Beatboxer is a man named Kevin, a lot of other people says he has a whole Orchestra in his mouth and they're right, he's also a Tenor.
You forgot to add that when Avi left he helped find Matt Sallee who is now the groups Bass and a great way to see him in action is “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch”
@@katarinad1309 Actually that's just a vague rumour that Avi helped find Matt. PTX search for a bass singer to replace Avi, and had an audition where Matt participated. And then we all know how it ended.
I heard somewhere that Kevin is also the only member of the group with perfect pitch (which is AMAZING) - so he’s responsible to lead their warm ups(?). Also, he didn’t really sing when he came to the group - UNBELIEVABLE!? And which they are remedying by having him sing more and more (the close of Amazing Grace comes to mind).
Now that you have met Pentatonix, you have been “Mitch slapped” ( hearing Mitch - singing high guy) and based on your reaction, you are now a Pentaholic. Next, watch “Amazing Grace” and “Mary did you know”. Bye the way, the man slapping his jacket is called a Beatbox guy and he uses his feet to stomp and his hands and mouth to make fun noise that sounds like musical instruments.
I've seen them live and at the end of the concert they laid the mics down and sang without them to prove it was them singing. One of my all time favorite concerts!
I love watching people react to this. Like you, they talk about the great voices etc. But I’m always so excited to watch the reaction when Mitch comes in. I paused it to write this. Next…Here comes Mitch‼️‼️
If you wanna be truly blown react to Imagine and Bohemian Rhapsody. In their Imagine video they pass a card from one member to another with something they have in common and how they're different. Both songs are amazing. You also can't go wrong with Daft Punk. The Sound of Silence is good too. And that features the debut of their current Bass Matt. Avi (guy with the long hair and beard) left the group in 2017 (very amicably) and Matt came in and replaced him.
When doing Daft Punk, it is worth doing the triple header. That song is on UA-cam as "Official" ua-cam.com/video/3MteSlpxCpo/v-deo.html, "Live" ua-cam.com/video/j_L6LQIMo9Ma/v-deo.htmlnd VIP (No mics) ua-cam.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/v-deo.html so you get to see the proof that they can do it live in one take - and that there are only minimal effects.
This particular video was to accompany a Christmas album, hence the heavy coats simulating cold weather. However, it was filmed on a southern California dry lake bed. So to get enough time to edit and mix and still have it ready to release on time, Oct 21, 2016, they had to film it in late summer, the hottest time of the year. Temperatures were well over 100F so they were taking frequent breaks to cool off and dry the sweat. The audio you hear was recorded in a studio and added in editing. Their live performances are all live singing with no lip-synching. If you watch the shadows and light directions you can see how long this took. There is a similar shadow show on Sounds of Silence. For Bohemian Rhapsody they filmed it outdoors on a street they had rented from 10PM to 6AM and they barely finished on time due to prop issues. In a few scenes you can see the false dawn behind them. Their recent release, 90's dance medley has a little obvious audio enhancement only to match the obvious adjustment on one original song that can not be recreated vocally..
Also - I see you did a video on Adam Rupp. If you want to do something similar here, you should check out some solo work from the Pentatonix beatboxer. “Kevin Olusola - Down” is one of the most impressive videos I’ve seen lately
As you are a architectural design professional, I suggest you listen to their version of "Amazing Grace". While the music will transfix, so will the video setting. It is a chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It's known as the Wayfarer's Chapel and was designed by Lloyd Wright, Frank's son. Wright's design of redwood and glass is a work of art and the Chapel, the grounds and the ocean view are a breathtaking trio! And yes, it is a functioning place of worship and is so popular for weddings that they are literally held every two hours on many days.
They also have recorded a wonderful live version which is truly impressive as it is very nearly the same caliber as their studio production. Amazing talent. ..
Pentatonix is my fave group. Good Job. Also you will see how many new people that follow PTX are mad crazy and will follow you. So they have been making music for 0ver 10 years now and I hope you look into them more. Lastly, you've been Mitch slapped now. That's a Pentaholic term for when Mitch sings high notes...😆
With all pentatonic songs you don’t even realize there are no instruments. They make all the instruments with their voices absolutely amazing. Listen to their rendition of Sound of Silence too
Welcome to Pentatonix! Plenty of people have already talked about live and one take performances - I thought I'd mention another aspect of their talent. Last year during quarentine they released a cover EP called At Home that was created entirely from their own homes, with none of them ever being in the same place at the same time. They composed their arrangements via Zoom, built studios in their homes if they didn't already have them, learned the software, recorded their own parts, recorded their videos and then sent the parts off to the editors and producers to put together into the finished products. The mastery of their craft is so apparent in their ability to make that work. So once you've checked out some of the standard intro to PTX fare and Evolutions, you might be interested in checking out something from At Home. Five of the six covers have videos - When The Party's Over, Blinding Lights, Dreams, Break My Heart and Home (a medley of songs with a "home" theme).
I think I might have said this before for this reaction but I’ll say it again. I love love love watching people getting “Mitch slapped”! It never gets old
The three original members, Scott, Kirsten, and Mitch have been singing together since high school choir in Texas so they are very well used to blending.
I have been a fan of Pentatonix since they were in The Sing Off and won. I grew up in choir so a cappella is dear to my heart. I love the way the build a song to a spine tingling crescendo and then quiet it down and hear the reverberations as it fades. They do this so well with "The Sounds of Silence". Other favorites - "Run to You", "Say Something", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Carol of the Bells", "Jolene", "Radioactive", "Aha!", "Daft Punk",

Glad you gave them a chance. Pentatonix PTX has a 10year discography of amazing songs. Beyond their official videos are a wealth of live performances that show why we love them. Hope you dive down the rabbit hole!!!
React to Pentatonix - Daft Punk. This is also a cover. They take all the Hits from Draft punk and mash it together in their own Acapella way. It's a very fun video to watch. They also won a Grammy for it.
Uh-oh! Welcome to the craziness that is the Pentatonix Rabbit Hole! Pentaholics are amazing fans so get ready to be inundated with comments from us. I was already subbed to you from your other content but so glad you reacted to this!
Great reaction!! This is the most beautiful version of "Hallelujah" I have ever heard (and I have heard a lot of them). Pentatonix is an absolutely amazing vocal group. They do covers as well as original songs. I would suggest you listen to their live performance of "Hallelujah" that they did on their TV Christmas Special because it will show you that their live performances sound almost identical to their music video/studio performances. Then, you MUST react to their music video of "Bohemian Rhapsody". I enjoyed your reaction and look forward to seeing more.
First, there is never any stupid questions when it comes to Pentatonix...I do encourage you to wear headphones. Their recordings have sounds that you can't hear with regular ear buds...headphones are incredible!!! Any of their videos will delight you. They have a new Xmas album coming out October 28th, and touring in the East Coast for their Christmas Tour. I hope we see more from you!!!
They filmed this for their Christmas album, but it was 90 degrees when they recorded in the Mojave Desert, they were sweating in their winter clothes. Another song they do which will bring you to tears, is their version of Amazing Grace.
Lol. I love watching reaction videos and I guarantee you'll be hearing from the pentaholics all in your comments. Once you react, they show up. Great bunch of people and always ready with interesting tidbits about their favorite artists. You'll be going down the rabbit hole that is Pentatonix before you know it. 😃🤟 And...you just got Mitch slapped. Lol
The beat boxing as an instrument…. These guys are amazing! My granddaughter fell inlove with them at under a year old. She would come to the computer and slap the keyboard saying “ ah bah bah!!” She was referring to their song ‘The Evolution of Music’ and asking me to play it. You should check it out!
You said that you never did “live” reactions…You would be well served to make an exception for their Christmas Special performance of Hallelujah! I can think of no better example of their abilities…if possible, it’s even better! I’m so jealous of you being able to hear them for the 1st time!!!
BTW, I did subscribe and am looking forward to watching along as you (hopefully) go down the PTX rabbit hole…I love your enthusiasm and personality in general! Welcome to the world of PENTATONIX 👍

Hope you keep reacting to these guys, because they are totally awesome, and have over 200 songs to choose from! 😁😁😎
Glad you gave them a chance. Pentatonix PTX has a 10year discography of amazing songs. Beyond their official videos are a wealth of live performances that show why we love them. Hope you dive down the rabbit hole!!!
Their live performances are even better!
React to Pentatonix - Daft Punk. This is also a cover. They take all the Hits from Draft punk and mash it together in their own Acapella way. It's a very fun video to watch. They also won a Grammy for it.
Welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole, and the phenomenon that is the Mitchslap!
Welcome among us Penthaholics. Watching First Time reactions to Pentatonix is The Best Spectator Sport!
Oh you've been Mitch Slapped!! Welcome to club!!
You are beginning a beautiful and mind blowing journey! Welcome to tge world of PTX.
You've started down that rabbit hole... It's a one way trip!
Goosebumps every time. ❤️
Uh-oh! Welcome to the craziness that is the Pentatonix Rabbit Hole! Pentaholics are amazing fans so get ready to be inundated with comments from us. I was already subbed to you from your other content but so glad you reacted to this!
Love your reaction! Definitely check out the live Xmas version of this song!
Background noises are a very creative partnership of beatboxer and bass.
They bring me to tears.
They are truly exceptional live.
They touch your soul. ♥️
They filmed this for their Christmas album, but it was 90 degrees when they recorded in the Mojave Desert, they were sweating in their winter clothes.
Another song they do which will bring you to tears, is their version of Amazing Grace.
90° Fahrenheit. That's in the 30s, Celcius.
Your Mitch-slap was perfect!!!
One of my favorites! They are amazing.
Lol
Sound of Silence another excellent song.
You've entered the rabbit hole!!!!!!!!!
Never mind… lol you already did that video 🥰
I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. 👍🙌❤️
Sound of silence is class too by them
You said that you never did “live” reactions…You would be well served to make an exception for their Christmas Special performance of Hallelujah!
"Background noise" -ha! ha! I'm sure that you meant "backing harmony". Enjoyed your first reaction to this wonderful group.
My dude you will not get burned. You have great questions. You are so excited like I am, and I've heard this song a ton! Keep it up! 💯 Cheers from the 🇺🇸!
Watch their live version from their Christmas Show. Virtually identical
Thank you For doing this reaction and you got the pronouncement correct "Pent a Tonix"
Definatly check out their other songs, they are beyond amazing!!
Welcome to the rabbit hole. Lol You and Millie both need to watch their version of Mary Did You Know. Life changing lol. Great content!! Love you guys!!
I am so happy to see you reacting to my favorite acapella group! I hope you will continue to explore their amazing music.
Great reaction! Subbed for more PTX! I love them!
Mitch slapped... never get tired of seeing it
