Well they got further than their so called favourites in this conversation England, Brazil & Argentina. This German side lacking so called quality finished 3rd, Went on to be runners up 2 years later at the Euro's too.

The first world cup I remember as a football fan was South Africa in 2010, and me as a naive kid thought England would win the whole thing haha!
