DDL as Bill The Butcher is easily my favorite movie villain of all time. Heath Ledger's Joker was phenomenal but Bill The Butcher was so terrifying and intimidating. Him being a more realistic and believable character is what made him so scary and his performance that much more special to me. I'd be more afraid of being stuck in a room alone with Bill The Butcher than The Joker.

I remember saying to my mate "The Butcher was an amazing character" and my friend said "Day Lewis is such a good actor" and it blew my mind! only 1 other film has that happened to me, the character being so good, I don't know who plays it. Big up DDL!!!!
Yeah... how many people can walk away from a profession for years and years convinced they had left it behind... get convinced to 'give it another shot' and just CRUSH a role like Bill The Butcher... I mean... seriously? So many of Daniel Day-Lewis' performances are iconic, but this one became my favorite eclipsing his 'In the name of the Father' masterpiece.
Surely that level of commitment and sort of throwing yourself into a role takes a mental toll on you. Probably why Daniel hasn’t done that many films and is now retired again. It’s a shame we won’t get to see him play more characters but it is what it is. It fascinates me how some actors need to go to such extremes whereas others can kind of just jump in and out of character at will you know they’re the character when they need to be but that’s it. Obviously both ways work cus amazing actors have many different styles. Method sounds like hell to me to a certain extent really would depend on the character
I'll tell you right now at 0:01. Leo learned to be a man, and learnt it from Daniel Day Lewis. Leo has never been the same again. Just track his movies on a timeline and see.
Daniel Day-Lewis Bette Davis and Sir Anthony Hopkins are my favourite Actors. They’re the kind of people who don’t just “act”, they all but inhabit a role and you can’t take your eyes off them when they’re on screen. DeCaprio is a good actor, but I find he’s very much reliant on the quality of projects he chooses to work on, whereas the others I mentioned above possess that rare artistic alchemy where they can take the most basic of elements and turn it into gold.
Sounds like he was already in character as Bill the Butcher even though he didn’t know yet. This is awesome, I can picture him walking with that hat 🎩 on

Like Lewis, Decaprio is a living legend. With their greatest rolls yet to be played.
Great interview! Love both Leo and Daniel.
The butcher is probably my favourite character ever in a movie
Yes
I truly believe that working with Scorsese and Daniel Day-Lewis is the turning point between Leo the teen heartthrob and Leonardo DiCaprio one of the greatest actors of his generation. Not that he wasn't already capable of being good....I just think that was when he realized how much more he had to step it up or get just blown off the screen..
Imagine taking a walk through Central Park with your kid or dog and see Leo and DDL on a bench 👀
That's why people live in the City. For the arts and culture. They ain't there just because they like traffic.
@@KeeperRL_official_channel do you always harass celebrities whenever you run into them? That's annoying. I know there's a cost for being famous but it shouldn't be that high.
@@KeeperRL_official_channel that's a safe assumption I think. People, ya just gotta hate them.
I sat in a small restaurant in Greenwich Village with Madona to my left and Bill Murray to my right, no one said a word to either of them..
@@KeeperRL_official_channelwhy would you follow people.. that's called stalking where i come from. They are only people who gives 2 shits,
whats the date of this interview
I’m guessing the early 2010s
DDL and Gary Oldman -- 2 of the greats of our generation.
One of the greatest actors of all time talking about the Greatest actor ever in Daniel Day Lewis
The last of the mohicans is one of the best opus day's in all of filmography. The part at the end where the elder is explaing that hes the last of his kind is so powerful, even as a young boy it always stuck with me. The last 10 minutes of the movie is probably, arguably the best 10 minutes of cinema ever filmed.
Odd to recall ... but I don't think I've ever seen DiCaprio interviewed before.
He gives very few interviews
I thought he was going to say "i learnt that method acting is for crazy people "
I still think My Left Foot is his best work and perhaps the best performance by an actor ever. I don't watch the politically motivated Oscars anymore but when I did, his winning the Best Actor award for My Left Foot was the only time while I was watching that a performance got a standing ovation. I hope he comes out of retirement. There will never be another like him in my lifetime and until he comes back I believe Leo is the best now.
Shit, by the way Leo describes it, you can make an entire movie on just the making of Gangs of New York. The "getting him out of retirement" scene would be legendary, lol. The arrival on the five points scene would also be epic. I've heard many tellings of the set like this outside of this interview.
Also "Somebody suggested it, might have been Marty" Ahh yes, "Marty." He has a habit of suggesting things, lol.
It'll be properly depicted in the DDL biopic: "3 TIME CHAMP"
coming Winter 2045
Maybe someone can get him out of retirement again. PTA?
Or Martin Scorsese maybe, perhaps in the Wager, if that gets made.
I would love him to pair Tarantino, Coen brothers, Wes Anderson or David O'Russell.
In most creative fields …sports as well there is always an artist who hovers over their genre like the spaceship over the White House in “Independence Day”….Tool,Micheal Jordan,Tom Brady,Dale Earnhardt,Ali,Prince…..Danny Lewis is one of those ships
I'm glad that I lived in the time of Daniel Day Lewis. It was acting at it's finest.
The Gangs of New York would not have had the depth and authenticity that it had without Daniel Day-Lewis. He was like Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now.
No one better than Daniel, leonardo will be spoken about in the same regard later on
DDL as Bill The Butcher is easily my favorite movie villain of all time.
I saw the film at the cinema and - genuinely - I did not know it was Day Lewis playing the Butcher! he was that good!!
Daniel has been a favorite of mine since The Bounty.
Great anecdote. Leo really opened up this interview.
I'll tell you right now at 0:01. Leo learned to be a man, and learnt it from Daniel Day Lewis. Leo has never been the same again. Just track his movies on a timeline and see.
Mr Lewis's way of method acting is that it just too dam good, he doesn't even break character when the cameras are off. Impressive!!
Seems like he was the best actor to play Abraham Lincoln after hearing this convo.
DiCaprio and Daniel Day Lewis are probably the two best actors alive today
Woulda felt like the longest 10 minutes ever.
He was ALREADY retired before that movie?? That’s insane. He killed that role
Probably the beat villain of all time. Truly iconic character. I swear he grew a foot and became Bill the butcher
Shockingly amazing performance by Daniel
_He learned_ that Daniel Day-Lewis' head DOESN'T go right up to the top of his hat.
S' there!
DDL best actor ever
I’ll watch any movie he’s in, one or the greatest actors of all time
What a fabulous movie about an actor talking another actor into taking an acting role...
Sounds like he was already in character as Bill the Butcher even though he didn’t know yet. This is awesome, I can picture him walking with that hat 🎩 on
-Daniel Day Lewis: Amazing, Legendary Actor and if you know all his works then you know this. Not a Billionaire, not even close.
-Robert De Niro: Amazing, Legendary actor who has played so many groundbreaking parts in movies. Not a Billionaire not even close.
-Al Pacino: Amazing, Legendary actor who has played numerous ground breaking characters. Not a Billionaire, not even close.
-Tyler Perry: Madea star, small part in Star Wars, and is a Billionaire who hasn’t even come close to producing anything close to what the gentlemen above have yet is a Billionaire. Boy I tell ya… Black Oppression these days right?
