Rainforest camping in Nightcap National Park | Minyon Falls walk and swimming

Minyon Falls is a spectacular waterfall in Nightcap National Park and is just a short drive from Byron Bay. The waterfall plunges 100m over the huge rhyolite cliffs, which were once part of the Tweed volcano.
From the lookout platform, get a bird's eye view of the falls cascading down to the deep palm-shaded gorge below. On a clear day, you can also see all the way out to the coast.
There are a few ways to reach the swimming hole at the bottom of the falls. We chose the 4km return track that starts at Minyon grass picnic area, which is the quickest and easiest way to get there. The track leads you down through lush rainforest and meanders along Repentance Creek till you reach the base of the falls. The track is moderately easy with a small amount of rock hopping at the very end.
We stayed at Rummery Park camping area, which is a small campground of 18 campsites with a mix of tent and caravan sites. We chose site 15. The campground has drop toilets, free gas bbqs, shared kitchen hut, fire pits and is surrounded by gums, pines, kauri trees and remnant rainforest.
The Rummery Park campground was originally a forestry camp, and its use dates back to the 1930s. One of the original forestry huts still remains. The area is also scattered with old growth tree stumps dating from the late 1800’s onwards. Some look nearly 2 metres wide and still show the marks where planks were fitted by the timber cutters for them to stand on.
