Think that's a borrowed Strat; much to the consternation of some, Blixa was fond of borrowing other's guitars, because he preferred their unfamiliar feel. That is genius.
@@markferguson3745 Kid Congo's on the Strat, Blixa's on the Jaguar. I'm sure I've only ever seen him play this Jag or his blue Mustang in any Bad Seeds video after about 1986
You'd think there would be more camera on Blixa playing guitar. Pretty intense though! Can't believe I saw them in 1984. Seems like several lifetimes ago...
Other artists that day: Texas, Pixies, Tanita Tikaram, Robert Cray, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Joe Jackson and Lou Reed; best edition ever of Rock Werchter; But this was still the highlight for almost 18 year old me
So the lineup if I am correct is Nick Cave - vocals, Brian Tristan and Blixa Bargeld - guitar, Mick Harvey - bass, Thomas Wydler - drums, Roland Wolff - keys. I think Thomas Wydler is still in the Bad Seeds line up. Roland Wolff is no longer with us.
@@Trundlecake LOL, I listed him as Brian Tristan, which is what he was called in Gun Club. I expect his mum is the only person who calls him that anymore.

Great band, great poet (Nick), great orchestration (all the bad seeds..) [The lyrics - for this song - are from Anita Lane, I think.. I'm not sure..]
Fantastic discorded sound...but he sayd in an interview on tele he actually couldn't play chords. There you have it . Mick Harvey ,who is the best player here and Blixa ...

That moment in time when Australia and Germany were so musically intertwined that this song could had been a The Triffids as well as an Einstürzende Neubauten as wells as a Nick Cave song.
Ah wanna tell ya 'bout a girl You know, she lives in apt. 29 Why? That's the one right up top a mine I start to cry, I start to cry Oh, I hear her walkin' Walkin' barefoot cross the floor-boards All through this lonesome night And I hear her crying too Hot-tears come splashin' on down Leaking through the cracks Down upon my face I catch 'em in my mouth! Walk and cry, walk and cry [Chorus] From her to eternity! From her to eternity! From her to eternity! [Verse 2] I read her diary on her sheets Scrutinizing every little piece of dirt Tore out a page and stuffed it inside my shirt Fled outta the window And shinning it down the vine Outta her nightmare And back into mine Mine! O Mine! [Chorus] From her to eternity! From her to eternity! From her to eternity! Cry! Cry! Cry! [Verse 3] She's wearing them bloo-stockens, I bet! And standin' like this with my ear to the ceiling Listen I know it must sound absurd But I can hear the most melancholy sound I ever heard! Walk and cry, kneel and cry! [Chorus] From her to eternity! From her to eternity! [Verse 4] Oh tell me why? Why? Why? Why the ceiling still shakes? Why the fixtures turn to serpents snakes? This desire to possess her is a wound And it's naggin' at me like a shrew But I know, that to possess her Is, therefore, not to desire her [Chorus] O o o then ya know That lil girl would just have to go! Go! Go! From her to eternity!
I Was 18 in 1989 and was there at wechter .Nick at his first song turned thé volume to the double. This song is about heroin what a wild time it was.Nick as always ,full of power is amazing. What a beast of concert he is.I am a great fan.Like him I managed to stop drugging and smoking for the better. What a grreat time it always is to see Nick live at a concert or festival.Hopw to see him again.
Not about heroin at all. It’s about a girl as you can hear in the first verse: “I wanna tell about a girl, you know she lives in room 29, the one right on top of mine…” Just because he was a junkie it doesn’t mean every fkn song of that era was about heroin.
@alund1306 Thanks Alund.. I wasn't sure for the lyrics (I read about the band many many years ago.. So..) I think that this version IS the best one ! The rhythm is perfect (fast but not "sloppy") : Wydler and Harvey impose the energy with their play, Kid pushes the sound to the limits (of saturation), Blixa.. is the dark side of the atmosphere ! I love the mesmerizing repetition of the same notes of the piano.. Pure masterpiece !
Thoughts on attire and skeletal length: I’m 5’6”, and weigh a lean, yet boxy, 140lb.s. If I attempted to dress like Nick, I would look ridiculous~ thoroughly worthy of ridicule & mockery. Short, flip flops & t shirts work well on me. If Nick dressed like me, he would look equally ridiculous, and undignified. Stay dignified Nick Cave
Probablement l'un des groupes le plus prolifique et inventif des 30 dernières années ! Un sens rare de l'orchestration, un goût prononcé pour les mélodies totalement improbables.. I remember reading at one of the Lollapalooza concerts 1994. Somebody threw a mud at cave and cave left the stage and never came back on I hope that guy got a good ass kicking 🤓
Can we take a second to appreciate what a (overtly underrated) hell of a drummer Thomas Wydler is?
He seriously is what made this performance so memorable.
Yes. Hear this all the time on youtube. Everyone is underrated
Switzerland...its normal😂
every drummer is underappreciated. thats the story
@@heavenorhell2024 Yeah but he is never really cited amongst great drummers, not even great post punk drummers.
I had to limit myself to only watching this twice a week.

I watch/listen to this daily, I cannot stop!

So incredible. Most performers these days cannot even come near this level of raw intensity.
He has blixa behind him
Pure horror on a bright sunshiny day. One of their best songs.
Love your description!
Nick often does the same in his lyrics. Opposites which flow together somehow.
Pure horror? It was a cloudy day...
Yeah, I don't see the sunshine.
I love those atmospheric sounds that come from Blixa's guitar
It’s mesmerizing
Fractured, turbulent beauty with Nick Cave performing as if nothing could possibly hold him back. Wish I could have been there.
but you are not
Unbelievably powerful and mad.
The Cheshire Cat is grinning!
Yay for Blixa and his beautiful Jaguar. I do wish he would still play the guitar. His playing is so unique.

This is one of those performances, like Hendrix at Monterey, where the audience is in shock, not yet knowing what they have witnessed.
I was there, Werchter 1989, and it was exactly how you describe it. 😮
I was there 10 metres from the stage flabbergasted

Best "one chord song" ever!
Blixa and Cave together are one big God
this is what a live should be.
this is the best version ever, they never played it like that again. the seeds are on fire! wydler is right in the pocket.
Roland Wolf was a great musician. His piano playing is delightfully beautiful on the album 'Tender Prey'. R.I.P.

Gosh this is good. i was thinking of playing this in the pub on Christmas eve; they're expecting a carol sing-a-long; fuck that.
