    Gesso on Arches Watercolor paper is a thing of beauty. The paper is thick and sturdy as well as nicely textured and the gesso only adds to that.

    Liquitex clear gesso gives a ton of tooth. I haven't painted with oils in a while, but I used to paint on my sketchbook all the time and I really enjoyed it. The downside was having the sketchbook open for a week or two and not being able to use it until the paint dried

      Interesting, I haven’t used their clear gesso yet🤔 And yeah, I agree about keeping the sketchbook open - it’s a pain. I think that next time I’ll use normal oils with a fast-drying white, which will speed up the process

    Many Italian artists were used to paint on Kraft paper in the 19 and early 20 century, even without gesso, then once dry they glued on canvas.

      I think it was mainly used for studies, but yes, you don't have to prepare the paper if it's just a sketch and you don't care about the archivability.

    Beautiful work! Now that the paint is dry, do you keep a separation paper between the two pages, so they don't accidentally start to stick to eachother?

    • @anabellstudio
      @anabellstudio  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! Yes, I kept the sketchbook open on that spread for as long as I could so that the paintings would dry completely, and then I put a sheet of transfer paper between the two pages so they don't stick to each other :)

      @@anabellstudioPerhaps varnishing the painting would eliminate the need for the oilpaper

    Great vid and tips. I'll look out for some smoother paper to try in the future. I do paint with oils (Cobra as well!) on water-color paper. The method I use to prime is three light coats of gesso and two to three coats of acrylic matte medium. While there is some buckling during the gesso process, it will dry flat. Especially with the weight of the layers and it definitely creates a smoother surface that I like. In the end it's all about what is personally desired. I'll have to try your method too! Take care and keep painting your world.

      Thank you for sharing, Steve! Sounds like your process produces a great durable surface. Take care and best of luck with your art practice ☺️

    Nice job! Your style remember me to Joaquín Sorolla. ❤. I used gesso on the paper and unknown the other sizing paste you have used. Please , Would you mind tell me what is the brand of that “sizing paste”? I,m Spanish and I can translate the name or brand of the product. I would like used it in my next paintings. Thank you very much, and so sorry for my english 🤦🏻‍♂️

      Thank you so much, that's a very flattering comparison haha! To be honest, I bought this sizing paste a few years back in Russia, so it might be difficult to access elsewhere. The brand name is "Tair", here's the link to the product on their website: tairtd.ru/shop/grunty/prokleyka-dlya-kholsta/prokleyka-dlya-kholsta-250-ml/. It's made of natural glues and resins, and I'm sure that there's good alternatives out there. You can also use rabbit-skin glue or gelatine, which are more easily accessible :)

    I just cant fathom how some people get so much out of so little paint? Is it just a lot of spirits / linseed oil?

    • @anabellstudio
      @anabellstudio  Рік тому

      To be honest, my advice would be to never be stingy with paint - you should “shoot yourself in the leg” if you try to get away with using a bit of it. I usually only use a bit of the medium, with the exception of white when using traditional paints because I add chalk and alkyd to alter its consistency and make it dry faster.

    Have you tried using a thin coat of Shellac instead of Gesso on paper?

    • @anabellstudio
      @anabellstudio  7 місяців тому

      Absolutely! The question is more whether you can paint with the same techniques as on a traditional surface, and whether it can be preserved for years to come.
