  • In today's video I am going to go over 2 relatively simple Tesla Coil circuits. The first one is the very common slayer exciter circuit, the second is a modified circuit similar to a ZVS (Zero Voltage Switching/Mazzilli) driver. I'll also go over some of the information I know about the parts and components and how to choose them for your build, DIY accessories you can make, and some basics on how to control the output of your Tesla Coil.
    I am not by any means an expert, I know a bit but I can't directly help you with your Tesla Coils, I am an optics/Laser tech. The circuit was taught to me by my friend JP. Below is the original video showing his design.

    This is one of my favorite nerds on UA-cam by far. Zen you’re the frickin bomb dude! I’m so happy I found this dude with less than 10k subs. When this dudes channel blows up I can say that I was one of the OGs!
    I really like your educational videos Zen!I’m shocked you don’t have more subs, but I guarantee that if you keep up the educational videos, mixed with some dope ass experiments of you also learning things, you will have at least 500k subs in the next few years. At LEAST 500k. And you would deserve it. SO DONT STOP TEACHING! I learn more from you than like 99 percent of the other electronic nerds. THANK YOU ❤

      The plasma pen does have a full tutorial. As I said, it's really a top skills sort of project of which is very difficult for most people to replicate due to it's size. There really isn't any new/updated information on it. You could probably use one of the modified ZVS drivers and a small TC in a plasma pen with good results though.

    I will need to watch this video a bunch of times to mine all of its good content! One thing that would be great is to post a schematic. Nothing fancy, just a diagram where the ink isn’t fading:). You show a diagram white board at the end but it’s still a bit difficult to figure out. I say this because there are many noobies (like me) who want to build these Zvs circuits but are having a tough time reading your whiteboard. Maybe I am complaining because I am dyslexic! Now this format is superb, don’t change a thing, this is just a request from a humble subscriber.

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  8 місяців тому +2

      Yeah, sadly some of the markers where more dry than I had expected lol. The ZVS is pretty simple, I can try to find the diagram I made, but it's on a crashed HDD so I have no idea what I can recover on it. It really is quite a simple diagram though, I am certain that if you took a run through and drew a diagram along with me ( with better markers ), that you would come out of the other side with everything you need. There are also dual 555 and 556 interrupter diagrams that you can try to find too! Feel free to contact me through email and I can try to chase up the diagram.

    Very nice video again, I enjoy all of them.
    I don't get why you would need the p-Type Mosfet in your quenching circuit. Can't you just leave the 22k in place and just short the gate/base to ground with the n-fet? If the gate is grounded, there is just a tiny current wasted through the 22k from vcc to gnd, but it should work in my opinion. Not sure if it makes a difference in high frequency though.

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  7 місяців тому +1

      My initial thought was along the same lines. I tried to just ground out the slayer exciter's transistor base but there was some issue. I don't remember what that issue was though. I went to using the P/N channel Fet combination that I used on the ZVS circuit and that fixed the issue.

    Do the winding direction of the primary and secondary have to be same?

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  5 місяців тому +1

      They do not need to be wound the same. You can flip the primary connections on the slayer exciters or the gate drive transformers on the ZVS to run the coil as needed regardless of winding directions.

  • @kdkinen
    @kdkinen 3 місяці тому

    The ZVS circuit. Could you get it to draw less current by choking further ?

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  2 місяці тому +1

      for a ZVS you can, the ideal way on these though is to use a PWM based interrupter. You can drop the current very low. I will hopefully discuss that when I get to making my TC magic wand video.

    You need some new pens!
    I always wondered about having an extendable secondary, like telescopic, or having the primary, which I usually see on only one plane, in different positions, I me a I'm sure by now that the reason it's on the bottom is for best output, but it would still be interesting seeing the effect of one in various positions (he said before you did it!) , or even a secondary coil in a square form, I'm an anarchist at heart
    The tiny one made me smile 🤣
    With the inductors, could you influence, or add to the strength of the magnetic field, by placing a rotating magnet near by? Maybe a crazy question... Do those inductors need to run in opposing directions?
    Putting on a fan 🤣 you kill me!
    Could you use one to send and recieve messages from another further away?

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  9 місяців тому +1

      I am strongly thinking about showing up ElectroBOOM's Tesla Coil wand. He never really did complete his and I am wondering why. Looking at his electrostatic wand vs the original JP and I put together I can see that his skills at assembly aren't as solid as mine/JPs. Should I make one?...I think so eventually.

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  9 місяців тому +1

      The inductors kind of need to be at an alike speed regime as everything else. There is some play you can do but they can't be too far off the frequency of the Tesla coil. Separate inductors can be wired however, but a center-tapped common core does need to be wound a certain way.
      The fan was a great move, esp on a 101F day!
      I am working on an RX/TX kit using the LM386 audio amp IC, however they don't always link very well unless they identical coils. Even putting a light/object near them changes this and causes issues. Pretty fickle set up but I have had results up to 15 foot away.

      Yeah bad LEDs would certainly stop a slayer exciter. The silver neons, they are strange... they also have green paint dipped tips on a bunch of them. I think they are for illumination best seen from the top in an even distribution of light, though I am not completely sure.

    very cool I rencently discovered the push pull sstc works great for low power cw if you kick start it by biasing the gates and once it starts you take out all the gates bias voltage it draws low power and is cool for energy transfer , lighting up fluorecent bulbs etc , but if I try to draw a arc it would kill the oscilation and I would need to kick start it again
